still have some cap compliance moves to

Make every moment more Right now new

customers get a hundred fifty dollars in

2:04

boats fetch with any winning five hour

2:06

bad one hundred fifty bucks if your

2:08

bandwidth is of into that com/locked on

2:10

to get. Started. So

2:12

today on the show we're going to

2:14

be taking a look at. And.

2:16

It's early on Monday morning. it's like

2:18

five am like the Russell Wilson to

2:20

to Pittsburgh News wrapped a few hours

2:22

ago. Wanted to

2:25

give as much time as possible for the

2:27

show in the event that new contract agreements

2:29

did come out. This is always that sense

2:31

it. It's how your work. You.

2:33

Do a podcast and probably within two

2:35

minutes some new additional news headline is

2:37

come out. There has rendered the talking

2:39

point that you wanted to record on

2:41

the show relatively useless. So we have

2:43

not taken this. All. The

2:45

way up until. The time. To.

2:48

Sit down and record and and talk

2:50

about this Miami Dolphins proofread and see

2:52

moved immediately Signings over the weekend we

2:54

for the we heard about to run

2:57

arms said from in Rapaport, Manchester and

2:59

all the heavy hitters in big media.

3:04

But. The Dolphins. The The biggest thing for

3:06

my me right now is I know

3:08

fans are kind of collectively like freaking

3:10

out a little bit that business he

3:12

was still not salary cap compliance and.

3:15

Just know. Or the I guess

3:17

I would suggest know. If

3:20

they needed to. If

3:22

they if they had to. The. Levers

3:24

that are are there for them to pull.

3:26

they couldn't could execute. And

3:29

be kept complaint. With.

3:32

A snap their fingers. Now there's not a. Long

3:35

term implications depending on what avenue you choose

3:37

to take would do a contract and I think

3:39

that are on Armstead situation is a perfect

3:41

example where the report came out that he would

3:43

be coming back on an adjusted contract. With.

3:46

As adjusted mean adjusted. I

3:49

get the impression based on.

3:51

The. Verbiage of that

3:53

report. Is that

3:55

that's not just a basic restructure?

3:58

So. And I know over the cab

4:00

has this in their resources and I

4:03

know job Corey who's are really be

4:05

at these with Cbs sports or contract

4:07

background that. Of. Both

4:10

of them have made it kind of clear

4:12

throughout the course of their works that. To.

4:15

Do a basic restructure which doesn't

4:17

add any additional years. Onto.

4:20

A contract. And. A

4:22

vast majority of Nfl contracts have

4:24

it baked into. Their

4:27

contracted that a team can

4:30

execute a basic restructure. With.

4:33

Little to no red tape or hurdles.

4:35

Or. Player feedback. They.

4:38

Can just say hey, your salary is

4:40

this your salaries can stay This is

4:43

no additional years on your contract for

4:45

of from a bookkeeping perspective organ or

4:47

a teacher. So.

4:50

That's the basic restructures to take salary

4:52

and converted into assignments. To

4:55

do the more complex restructures like. Adding

4:58

void years to the back in the

5:00

feals to further. Increase. The

5:02

runway for how much cap you

5:04

can disseminate or to adjust to

5:06

contract and it just somebody salary.

5:09

Those sorts of things do require

5:11

player feedback. I.

5:13

Think it's important to know because the

5:15

dolphins it from reports. Tried.

5:18

To solicit. A.

5:21

Compensation change. With.

5:23

Linebacker Jerome Baker, They. Couldn't

5:25

find me to ground. Control

5:28

Baker. Are the

5:30

same thing's happening in San Francisco with Arik?

5:32

Armstead does came out last night as a

5:34

last minute thing and it's it's it's. a

5:36

big addition to the friedgen porn. The Into

5:38

Defense of Line last. Air

5:41

Com Said was due to make seventeen

5:43

point one million one four million dollars

5:45

in salary this year. If.

5:48

We nice reportedly came to him and

5:50

asked. To. Take a paycut. And.

5:52

He said no. So. They

5:54

are cutting him he should be in

5:56

the free agency pool. So it seems

5:58

like for Miami's perspective. They're

6:01

exploring all of that kind of stuff

6:03

first instead of just defaulting into the

6:07

just basic restructure and we can do it like this because they

6:09

know at the end of the day if they need to, they

6:12

can do it like this. I'm snapping my

6:14

fingers if you're not on YouTube. But the

6:16

challenge with that and the reason why you

6:19

wait, deadline

6:21

spur action as the saying goes, there's

6:24

no take-backs on that. What

6:27

happens if you take

6:29

the maximum amount of money that you could

6:31

restructure out of hypothetically

6:34

Jaylen Ramsey's contract

6:37

and then you

6:40

have the opportunity to or you

6:44

realize later down the road, you

6:46

don't have maybe the same viability of

6:48

a contract extension that would help alleviate

6:50

some of that pressure that you're putting

6:52

into future years on Jaylen Ramsey's cap

6:54

management. So

6:57

do you want to default and restructure

6:59

if there's another way to do it? For

7:04

Bradley Chubb, we

7:06

did it in the off-season blueprint. We said, look,

7:08

you can restructure Bradley Chubb, you can create this

7:10

much cap space, about $14 million. And

7:14

then you could post June 1st

7:16

Bradley Chubb after next year and

7:19

transition away from that contract if you needed to

7:21

and save $20 million post June 1st, but you

7:23

can't touch money till post June 1st. What

7:28

if they don't want to have to have a

7:30

post June 1st exit ramp on Bradley Chubb? Well,

7:32

that means you're going to have other conversations or

7:34

you're hoping to get contract extensions done

7:36

and exhaust all the other avenues. Or what

7:38

happens if a player comes up in a

7:40

trade conversation, a big galaxy

7:42

brain trade conversation? I think,

7:44

well, we can't really trade him, we

7:47

just restructure his contract. Where

7:50

if you didn't restructure it and there was

7:52

just salary up front that you could say,

7:54

OK, there's capital for us to trade for

7:57

a swap of assets. That,

8:02

I think, is it

8:04

maybe they're going to more players and talking about

8:06

performance versus pay and all that kind of stuff.

8:09

And I'm sure to some degree that they are.

8:14

But it's not as though there's this

8:17

red tape around these basic contract moves

8:19

that they can make that

8:21

would prevent them from being in a place where

8:23

they're cap compliant and then having to

8:25

deal with the ramifications of that. If push comes to shove,

8:27

if they get to the deadline and

8:29

they have all the information that they need to say, okay,

8:33

this is the market for these players. This

8:36

is a

8:38

better feel for what our free agency plan is going to

8:41

look like. Then

8:43

they'll execute that and they'll be compliant for the start of

8:45

the league calendar year just like every other team in the

8:47

history of the NFL has always been. Nothing

8:51

to lose sleep over. But

8:54

we mentioned Taran Armstead more on him in just a

8:56

moment here on Lockdown Dolphins. Make sure that

8:58

you stick with us. We're going to talk about that next.

10:54

So that all of us got the news yesterday, or I should

10:56

say we got the news yesterday,

11:00

that Toronto said officially going to be back in the

11:02

game for Miami in 2024, which I think is a

11:06

good thing. When you consider

11:10

what this free agency market looks like at

11:12

offensive tackle, if you would have had to

11:15

add that, and now it's a great year

11:17

for the draft, it's an incredible year in the

11:19

draft. And depending on how the

11:21

board breaks, and depending on what else the Dolphins accomplish

11:24

in the early stages of free agency, if you told me

11:26

that they were going to take their first round pick and drafted

11:28

a tackle that could play guard and play him at guard

11:30

early, and then there's

11:32

your long-term plan

11:34

to tackle to replace Toronto instead,

11:36

I think it'd be a great plan.

11:40

But you'd hate to paint yourself into a corner. And

11:43

this offensive tackle free agency class has

11:46

Tyron Smith from Dallas, and

11:48

it sounds like he's going to test the market. And

11:51

a whole bunch of, a whole bunch of nothing.

11:54

A whole bunch of absolutely nothing. You got to get

11:57

down to the gut names like George Fant, Diamond Smith,

11:59

Jonah Williams, and Spring

12:01

starters, terrain, aluminum, or he was

12:03

here. Dolphins cut him, goes to

12:05

the Raiders, different scheme, has some

12:07

success. Obviously,

12:10

Kendall Lamb is a Dolphins player. We'll talk more

12:12

about Dolphins players, resignings here in

12:14

just a minute here on the show, but

12:18

you were going to be in for

12:20

a rough ride. If you needed on

12:22

top of several starters on

12:24

the interior, if you needed

12:26

an offensive tackle, that was going

12:28

to be a really bumpy road. There were going to be

12:30

financial implications for this. I'm glad Toronto said it's back. I'm

12:33

fascinated to find out what the, quote unquote,

12:36

reworked or adjusted contract

12:38

is. That could be any

12:41

number of things. That could be deferring pay to 2025.

12:47

Is that guaranteed money? Is that

12:52

stipulated money? Is that just

12:55

restructuring into another

12:58

refinanced signing bonus? I would

13:00

think not. But

13:03

Toronto Armstead, he's not due for a small

13:05

hit. He's on the books for the Dolphins

13:07

in their cap perspective at

13:09

20.6 million. Is

13:13

the salary cap

13:15

hit for Toronto Armstead this

13:17

year? Adjusting

13:20

this could be any number of

13:22

different things. I'm curious how much of this is,

13:24

and he already has some of this in his

13:26

contract. He

13:28

has a $1 million roster

13:31

bonus each

13:34

year on his

13:37

contract, 2023, 2024,

13:39

2025, 2026. And

13:41

that is whatever percentage

13:44

of games, it's a per game

13:46

bonus. Each

13:50

game that you're active, you get a pro-rated

13:52

amount of the maximum amount of money, which

13:54

is $1 million. Do

13:57

they take more of that salary? Is he willing?

14:00

to take more of that salary

14:02

and put it into a per

14:04

game bonus of being active.

14:07

From Miami's perspective, you want to go out and play all 17 games?

14:12

Great Toronto Arms Dead. We'll pay you the

14:14

13 and a quarter of your dues here

14:16

in base salary. He's

14:19

got some other finances. He's got

14:21

$650,000 in miscellaneous bonuses from

14:25

making the Pro Bowl last year. And

14:28

then he has $588,000 from last year's per game

14:30

active bonuses. So

14:38

he did not make either of the playing time

14:41

incentives on his contract. If he

14:43

played 65% of the snaps, he would have

14:45

earned $300,000. If

14:47

he'd have played 70% of the snaps, he would have earned $400,000.

14:51

And that continues to scale based on percentage

14:53

of play. So this kind of language is

14:56

already in Toronto Arms Dead's contract, which

14:59

makes it really interesting to me that

15:01

they're talking about reworking the deal. Is this

15:03

just a matter of, hey, you're

15:06

due $5 million in

15:08

guaranteed? We're

15:13

going to take that and we're going to move

15:15

that money to 2025 and not create a longer

15:20

ramp way? So it's just year one

15:23

relief. And then if you play next year, we

15:26

can figure it out. And if you don't play next

15:28

year, you still get $5 million and we'll carry that

15:30

in addition to whatever dead money that you carry. Although

15:33

that really makes him a net even

15:37

unless somebody else were to sign

15:39

him from a dead cap

15:41

perspective. Right

15:44

now for 2025, if you moved on pre-June

15:46

1st from Toronto Arms Dead in 2025, you'd

15:49

save $8 million against the cap. If you went post June

15:51

1st, you'd save 14.3. So

15:54

taking more money and putting that into 2025

15:56

instead of doing a re-signing or a

15:59

basic restre- structure is not

16:01

really that appealing. So is

16:03

this stipulated money? How much is Turan willing to make

16:06

it stipulated money? What percentage of the 13 and

16:08

a quarter that he's owed? So

16:10

I got a lot of questions. And

16:13

I'm fascinated to see what they ultimately do

16:15

end up cooking up for Turan Armstead, who's

16:17

been willing to play ball with all this kind of

16:19

stuff when he signed the five-year $75 million

16:22

contract to play in Miami. The

16:26

cash that he has received to this point, he

16:30

got 15.2 in 2022. We

16:33

got 18.1 last year. Right

16:37

now he's owed 14.2 this

16:40

upcoming season. And

16:42

if a higher percentage of that

16:45

other than just a million dollars of the 2025 hit, which

16:48

he may be walking away from if he ends up retiring considering

16:51

we took it to right up to the start of the league

16:53

year for whether or not you were to play this year, I

16:57

think that could put the Dolphins in position to

16:59

have a little bit more peace of mind that

17:02

they're getting what they pay for, which

17:04

you obviously want to have when you're a team that has

17:08

the kind of talent that Miami has collected. And

17:11

a lot of it, unfortunately, was not on the

17:13

field for you last year. But

17:18

the Dolphins have not let their

17:20

lack of cap compliance, including whatever they're going to

17:22

do with Toronto Armstead. Prevent

17:25

them from starting to get some guys under contract,

17:28

guys that were expiring contracts. That is next.

18:07

Miami was busy over the weekend, despite

18:09

the perception because of

18:11

this this Hallory cap. Waiting

18:15

game that we're all playing. Players

18:18

that are returning for the Dolphins, some

18:21

of them were on the offseason blueprint last week, some of

18:23

them were not. I generally don't have

18:25

a a disappointment

18:27

on any of the players that are back. Elijah

18:31

Campbell, this was a player that was

18:33

on the offseason blueprint. Special

18:35

teams, staple type of player,

18:37

really good coverage player. Safety,

18:40

he pressed in action a

18:43

few times last year in

18:45

the defensive side of the ball. I think ideally

18:47

that's that's not where he plays. I

18:49

think if you were to have injuries, you'd probably prefer

18:51

to bring in a vet and

18:54

leave Elijah Campbell. In

18:56

the special teams role that he's in, I think

18:59

that's where he's really good. He's

19:01

back. Rob

19:04

Jones, offensive lineman is back. Out

19:08

of last year's group, I

19:10

would probably place him. Talent

19:13

perspective or performance

19:16

perspective behind Armstead,

19:18

behind Lamb, behind Jackson. Keon

19:21

Smith, we just don't have enough volume to

19:23

kind of get an accurate gauge. So I'd

19:25

say definitively behind those three tackles. He's

19:28

behind Isaiah, when he's behind

19:30

Connor Williams, he's behind Robert Hunt. So

19:33

this is probably your

19:37

eighth offensive lineman. Probably.

19:43

But from a financials perspective, he played

19:46

tackle in college. He can

19:48

play both guard spots for you. I

19:50

think he's certainly a more impactful player than Lester

19:52

Cotton. And

19:54

I Think his plays guard is

19:56

better than what we've seen from Lee Meikeberg. You just

19:58

can't snap. So I'm

20:01

not sad to see Rob Jones back

20:03

by any means. I do use a

20:05

quality depth in tier offensive linemen. Are.

20:07

They give the is brought into the season and carried

20:09

into the season with the intends to being a starter.

20:11

I'm going to be underwhelmed. I. Certainly hope

20:14

this sub case. Oh, there's a lot more work to

20:16

some of the offered to Wyman to ensure that that

20:18

doesn't happen. Is

20:20

right now you're interior. Group. Will

20:22

align is. Rob. Jones.

20:25

Leicester. Cotton and. We.

20:28

Might have or. Or but

20:30

those guys were stars. Were you a lot? Last year. Don't

20:33

let them be starters issue. So.

20:36

I totally prolonged. Rob Jones. been back

20:38

on Earth would presumably a low dollar

20:40

deal. For. A experienced player

20:42

in the system. Is.

20:45

Now on a downside and that as as somebody who he

20:47

the the quality that flirty to play more than one spot.

20:50

But. Don't let him be a star. Neat Needham's

20:52

Bank. Which. Look mate

20:54

next value is this He complained in a

20:57

colleague replace a plan specialties. You'd.

20:59

Ideally like to think and twenty twenty four

21:01

being a year fully or move from that

21:04

achilles tear, he's gonna be a little bit

21:06

more back to the athletic profile that's at

21:08

his peak. And. This was a

21:10

player who even when it first came in

21:12

and league as let us is it really

21:14

wasn't like his game. He

21:17

was toffee tackle, well used, instinctive. Arm.

21:20

And he played well in the slot where

21:23

he had kind of protections. Two.

21:26

Players who are a little bit more athletically

21:28

adverse. So. Then you take

21:30

that you have an achilles and come off achilles

21:32

tear. It's just it's a bad next. Some.

21:35

I'm hoping that Nick need him back. And twenty

21:37

twenty four. Is a little

21:39

bit more the player that we saw prior. But.

21:42

A guy who can be a safety be a

21:44

be a third safety of the a nickel player.

21:47

Kind of a position was player

21:49

again versatility, the kind of maximize

21:51

around your your cornerstone type of

21:53

players. As. The thought process.

21:56

so nicknames back he wasn't on the blueprints

22:00

But the fact that

22:02

he does have that versatility is the upsell there.

22:05

I certainly don't think that that's a player that is

22:07

brought back based on. Well, we're

22:09

kind of hearing about the commitment of that contract

22:11

that's being brought back for definitively like

22:13

a starting role or anything like that. I

22:17

think there's two guys looming. Well, maybe

22:19

three guys looming, but I think Brandon Jones is

22:21

looming. I don't know whether Jevon Holland was teasing

22:23

anything or not with the tweet over the weekend,

22:25

but he did 29 times eight or whatever.

22:30

And obviously Brandon Jones wears 29 and Jevon Holland

22:32

wears eight. I have heard

22:34

that there is interest there in

22:38

retaining his services. Brandon Jones,

22:41

I think is a specialty. I

22:44

put this together over the weekend when I first kind

22:46

of heard this, these rumblings. If

22:51

you were looking for a Geno Stone type of

22:53

player and look, I know Geno Stone got seven

22:55

interceptions last year. But

22:57

I also know what Geno Stone athletically is as a

23:00

player. I know what his build is as a player.

23:03

He's not quite Brandon Jones a better like

23:05

run support player, but from

23:08

a size athleticism,

23:11

general ball skills perspective. I

23:14

think Brandon Jones could do some of the same

23:16

things as Geno Stone in that defense

23:18

that Anthony Weaver is bringing over to Miami.

23:21

I'm not gonna say here and tell you that he's gonna pick off

23:23

a bunch of passes next year either. But

23:27

this scheme has a little bit more flexibility

23:29

for guys that can play on

23:31

the roof or simultaneously play low in the box.

23:33

And that was kind of the big standoff with

23:35

the Vic Fangio scheme was it's like, well, we

23:37

wanna run two highs and we don't wanna tip

23:39

our hand by having personnel in key spots. And

23:42

Brandon Jones, if you play him low, you

23:46

expect he's either is gonna bring pressure or he's

23:48

going to be a run

23:51

support player. And

23:53

you're probably gonna get zone coverage. If

23:55

he's gonna play high, you say, okay, you're

23:57

probably expecting a run support. kind

24:01

of the core coverages of the defense and

24:03

he's just going to play whatever half or

24:05

quarter assignment that he has. So

24:10

I think a defensive

24:12

scheme that can have a

24:14

little bit more flexibility for the players

24:19

probably puts Brandon Jones in a better position to

24:21

be successful. I don't think it's a coincidence that

24:23

his successes came in

24:25

2021, 2022 with the Flores Boyer

24:31

type of scheme where they did move

24:34

players around. I don't think that's coincidence. So

24:36

if he's back, I think that that's an omen there.

24:40

And I do expect the team to figure something out with Andrew

24:42

Van Kinkle. I know that there's a

24:44

lot of interest. I've heard that from more than one

24:46

place. I know some of my friends in

24:48

the content creation space for the Dolphins, they

24:51

have heard that as well. The

24:54

Dolphins obviously have the need. That's

24:56

another one of those internal players. And I know everybody

24:58

who's concerned about the precedent that

25:00

set of letting Christian Wilkins walk out the

25:02

door for a player who came

25:05

in and did everything he asked of him

25:07

and got better and you're not going

25:09

to pay him for what happened to

25:11

draft and develop. I think Andrew

25:13

Van Kinkle belongs in that conversation. I think they

25:15

think Andrew Van Kinkle belongs in that conversation in

25:17

the same way that they

25:19

have already rewarded guys like

25:23

Austin Jackson. They've rewarded guys like

25:25

Zach Seeler who they didn't draft,

25:27

but they developed. That

25:29

draft and develop or acquire and

25:32

develop, that player development pipeline. The

25:35

Dolphins are rewarding those players.

25:37

Durham Smythe, Jerome Baker, Avian Howard.

25:40

Those are good examples of

25:42

this team. It's just

25:44

what happens when an interior defensive line

25:46

market dries up. A player's intent on

25:49

completely maximizing his value and is expected

25:51

to get top of market money. Same

25:55

for Robert Hunnigard. That's

25:57

the unfortunate intersection of those guys played well enough where

25:59

the they want to maximize

26:03

their value, they're gonna do that only by

26:05

going to the market and figuring out, okay,

26:07

here are the kind of offers that I get, cross-reference

26:10

that with what Miami's offering, cross-reference that with

26:12

state income tax and so on and so

26:14

forth to moving my family and all

26:17

that stuff, what kind of signing

26:19

bonus up front am I getting offered, and then they'll do

26:21

that math and they'll make that decision that's best for them.

26:28

But I think Nick Needham, Rob Jones,

26:30

Elijah Campbell is a nice start. I

26:33

would not be surprised if either Andrew Van Kinkle or

26:35

Brandon Jones is next. Sounds like

26:37

they'd like to figure something out with Isaiah Wynn, although

26:40

I don't think that's gonna be a super high in

26:42

demand player because the injury that he's coming off of

26:44

and the injury history there. So I'd look for

26:46

those maybe next. I'd

26:48

look for some salary cap maneuvers as

26:50

well. Try to get the Dolphins

26:53

aligned and started to move in the right direction, then we'll

26:55

figure out what happened with Terron Armstead. And

26:57

it's next this week.
