I'm going to tell you why the Knicks size
0:40
was ultimately the difference maker in this one and
0:43
so much more next on Lockdown Knicks.

1:33
all your favorite play by play broadcasters favorite play
1:35
by play broadcaster. And this, this
1:37
was not my favorite performance from
1:39
the New York Knicks. If an understandable one,
1:41
a 113 to a hundred loss to the
1:43
Denver Nuggets, the Knicks got a close lead
1:45
in this game at 12 to two run
1:48
in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit
1:50
to 90 to 88. They
1:52
couldn't tie the game. They could not take the lead. The
1:55
Nuggets end on a 23 to 12 run. close
2:00
things out and this was
2:02
ultimately after three gritty
2:05
wins to start the West Coast
2:07
trip. No OG Ananobi
2:09
in this game. This was not
2:11
only an understandable loss. I would go so far
2:13
as to call it an acceptable loss for the
2:16
New York Knicks. I know no one in that
2:18
locker room believes that. I know Tom Fivita doesn't
2:20
believe that. I know Jaylen Bronson doesn't believe that.
2:22
They probably thought down the stretch of this one
2:24
it was ultimately a winnable game but it was
2:26
one that the Knicks were
2:28
in despite the fact they really
2:30
had no business being in it.
2:33
I talked a lot earlier this
2:35
season about all the different times
2:37
it felt like the Knicks were
2:39
just completely outmatched from a size
2:42
perspective. It felt like that a little bit
2:44
on night one against the Boston Celtics. Their
2:46
second game of the season against the Pelicans.
2:48
I thought it stood out even more where
2:50
the Knicks were just dreadful offensively. Brandon Ingram
2:52
was just raining shots over the top of
2:54
whichever defender was unlucky enough to have a
2:56
try at him. The offensive
2:58
rebounding. The Knicks were getting a taste of
3:00
their own medicine with Yona's found Tunis and
3:03
their front line. It was demoralizing
3:06
for a team that was a
3:08
year off of just bullying the
3:10
Cleveland Cavaliers. All of a sudden,
3:13
Santhobi top and they just felt
3:15
too small. Then they completely corrected
3:17
that in one brilliant trade for
3:20
OG Ananobi. All of a sudden,
3:23
the Knicks were once again back to
3:25
being the bully. Whenever Ananobi has been on
3:27
the court, despite no Mitchell
3:30
Robinson for two-thirds
3:32
of the season now, the
3:34
Knicks have dictated the physicality
3:36
of every game. It's impossible
3:38
not to think back to
3:40
that 38-point win
3:42
over Denver right before the injuries
3:44
started coming in with Randall
3:47
on the court, with Ananobi on the court.
3:49
If that wasn't the apex of
3:52
this next season, it was right around
3:54
that time. I probably would call that
3:56
when the apex of the next season,
3:58
how they just physically dominated
4:00
Denver across the board. And then
4:03
to flash from that to
4:05
today, where there's no Randall, there's
4:08
no Ananobi and Mitchell Robinson is close,
4:10
but he is not quite back yet.
4:13
And it just
4:15
sort of looked like a college team playing a high
4:17
school team and have the A team playing a high
4:20
school team. It was the
4:22
same comparisons I was using earlier in the
4:24
year where you saw Michael Porter Jr. I
4:26
don't know if this was the Nadir of
4:28
his matchup with Dante
4:31
DiVincenzo, but the lob off the backboard
4:33
for the dunk, that had to be
4:35
pretty close. All
4:37
in all in this one,
4:40
MPJ, he finished 13-16 from
4:42
the field, 31 points, and he just looked completely
4:49
unaffected. It was borderline as if
4:51
he wasn't being guarded up there.
4:54
Probably every time he shot, it was with
4:57
a clear line of vision. And you can't
4:59
blame Dante for that. He's what he's giving
5:01
up five, six inches in that matchup for
5:03
a guy who can rise and fire and
5:05
has a high release. But
5:08
that was, that was only the start. I
5:10
mean, the offensive rebounding early in this game
5:13
is the nugget scored their first 10 points
5:15
in the paint. Jamal Murray was doing the
5:17
exact same thing to do. So where he
5:19
was either rating jumpers over him or just
5:21
corralling his own misses and putting it back.
5:23
Jokic, I mean, Precious Achewa, bless
5:25
his heart, had zero chance to get to him.
5:27
The only time they were able to somewhat contain
5:30
Jokic was when
5:32
Isaiah Hartenstein, who was fantastically into that
5:34
in just a sec, was in the ballgame.
5:37
Aaron Gordon was just playing volleyball off
5:39
the rim. It
5:41
was a testament to what makes this
5:43
next team special that despite all that,
5:45
like they were in this ballgame. And
5:48
early on, it was because Jalen Brunson
5:50
and Isaiah Hartenstein were both absolutely
5:52
brilliant. Brunson finished this
5:55
one with 26 points, nine assists,
5:57
two rebounds, Hartenstein 20 8-10
6:01
shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 assists,
6:03
2 blocks, 1 steal,
6:06
awesome across the board. And
6:08
Bronson in particular, his
6:11
ability to string out the double teams,
6:14
the way the Nuggets often play, they've
6:16
added some stylistic diversity into their defense.
6:18
But what they like to do is
6:20
use Nikola Jokic in drop and Bronson
6:22
just expertly was able to string that
6:25
out and then just repeatedly find Isaiah
6:27
Hartenstein in heavy traffic, the Nuggets a
6:29
lot of credit, they cleaned that up
6:31
in the second half and had the
6:33
lowman rotate over and were
6:35
able to muck it up just enough that Bronson
6:38
couldn't really dominate them that way in
6:40
the second half. But in the first
6:42
half, Bronson's passing was
6:44
a sight to behold. I thought despite the 9 assists
6:46
in this game, it's just a crazy number from 7
6:49
of them in the first half. I
6:51
was going to say one of the better passing
6:53
games on the year for Bronson. I'll be a
6:55
little more conservative and say it was one of
6:57
the better passing halves we have seen on the
6:59
season for Jalen Bronson just over and over again.
7:02
Like the speed he's able to get on the ball and
7:04
despite the fact that they were putting a lot of length
7:07
on him and I think counting on that length
7:09
to affect his ability to deliver on those
7:11
passes even if he could see them. I
7:14
mean the one that stood out to me was
7:16
like left wing jumps up, looks middle as if
7:18
he's just going to whip it to the top
7:20
of the perimeter and just fired a laser to
7:22
Hartenstein under the rim for a dunk. And it's
7:25
reminiscent of some of the passes Nikola Jokic throws.
7:27
Of course the difference is Jokic is a 7
7:29
footer and can see over the top while Bronson
7:31
has to jump as high as he possibly can
7:33
in the air, contort himself to a weird angle
7:35
to wrap it around the arms of the defense
7:38
and then laser it. I mean the
7:40
degree of difficulty for Jalen Bronson was
7:43
just ridiculous. There's no other
7:45
way to put it mixed in some nice
7:47
scoring as well. And I heart return the
7:49
favor. They had this beautiful give and go
7:51
in the third quarter where
7:54
he just threaded it between Jokic
7:56
and KCP. Bronson, we've seen
7:58
him. It's kind of
8:00
a new outlet on this Knicks offense
8:03
with Isaiah Hartenstein starting, but I think they're
8:05
going to it more than ever with no
8:07
Randall and no Ananobi because they just need
8:09
more ways to create offense and they need
8:11
ways to create offense without putting a disproportionate
8:13
burden on Jalen Brunson. And
8:15
they found it with Brunson running the
8:17
two man game with Hartenstein and cutting
8:19
off the ball and I heart's ability
8:21
to just find
8:23
these passes that aren't really
8:25
open, but squeeze them
8:28
in anyways. He doesn't get the types of
8:30
passes that in the Kola, Yokich does one
8:32
because Yokich is a one of one and
8:34
is the greatest passing big man of all
8:36
time, but also because Yokich has this incredible
8:38
gravity as a scorer and I heart, despite
8:40
the fact that he had a really nice
8:42
game scoring the basketball, like he's never going
8:45
to draw that kind of attention. Like, and
8:47
he's not going to draw double teams. And
8:50
because of that, the passes have a
8:52
much higher degree of difficulty and he's
8:54
still able to pretty consistently pull them
8:56
off. I want to talk about
8:58
what a hub he has become and how
9:00
that has changed the
9:02
Knicks offense for the better, especially relative to what
9:04
he did early in his career on
9:07
the New York Knicks and a little bit more
9:09
about Jalen Brunson scoring before getting into some other
9:11
guys. So we'll talk about that in just a
9:13
sec here on locked on Knicks. All
9:15
right. So a little bit more on
9:18
Hartenstein and Brunson, um, typical really impressive scoring
9:20
game for Jalen Brunson. I did think he
9:22
faded down the stretch a little bit of
9:25
this one. He didn't quite have the impact
9:27
in the fourth quarter that you'd want. And
9:30
in pursuit of another big
9:32
night, we saw the free throws at such a
9:34
high rate in Portland where he made 15 of
9:36
them. And then we saw the threes going against
9:38
the Kings. Um, last night didn't
9:40
really have either of them two for seven from
9:43
distance, just two for three from the wide. And
9:45
I think in that sense, the Nuggets
9:47
did a nice job of stopping him from
9:49
being hyper efficient. Again, the way they were
9:51
able to guard him is not the way
9:53
you're able to guard him when an Ananobis
9:55
on the court, when a
9:57
Randall's on the court, but it gives.
9:59
gives you an idea of how good
10:02
Jalen Brunson is at this point that
10:04
26 points at nine assists on near
10:06
50% shooting counts
10:09
as keeping him in check. And I think
10:11
Denver, like, especially starting with the second half
10:13
of this game, they gambled like, all right,
10:15
if we, if we throw those doubles at
10:18
him, if we take away the most obvious
10:20
pass to a roller and Isaiah Hartenstein, we're
10:23
going to limit this guy just enough to win this
10:25
ballgame. And that, that is ultimately what they did. Like
10:27
he had, he had some good moments in the second
10:29
half, like that give and go like totally tore up.
10:32
I can't remember his KCP or if it was Reggie
10:34
Jackson on like a behind the back freeze, freeze your
10:36
defender and then stamped
10:39
it with an elbow jumper. Like Brunson was
10:41
great in this game. Like it's no shade
10:43
on Jalen, but they did enough
10:45
against him. And I think that is going to
10:47
be the model for the teams in the playoffs.
10:49
All right. Stop the threes. Don't
10:52
let him live at the line and just force him
10:54
to make a ton of twos. I mean, I think
10:56
even, even what we saw from Boston where they were
10:58
playing drop on him over and over and over again,
11:00
but chasing him over the top with two of the
11:02
best defenders in the league in, in
11:04
Drew Holliday and Derek white, that
11:07
is going to be the model. How many teams can actually execute
11:09
on that? I think very, very few.
11:11
I think Boston and two, a lesser degree
11:13
Denver list of four or five. And again,
11:15
if the outlets are OGN
11:17
and OB and Julius Randall teams are going to
11:19
get punished for that in ways they're not getting
11:22
punished now when those guys
11:24
are unfortunately still
11:26
injured. But I also wanted to talk
11:29
about how Hartenstein, I mean, sought
11:31
out his own offense in this game,
11:33
like aggressively going at Nicole, Yokich, like
11:35
twice for like once drive bump, little
11:38
baby hook had another one where
11:40
he even took like a deeper hook. And,
11:43
and it was, it was like a half reverse
11:46
spin, like jump hook, but it was like five,
11:48
six feet away to show it off. Great touch.
11:50
Had another little push shot in, in pseudo garbage
11:52
time late in the fourth quarter. Had like, this
11:54
was a really subtle play. I don't know if
11:57
you guys know what a Gore top screen is,
11:59
but essentially like of defenders in drop. It's
12:01
where you set an initial pick and roll with
12:03
a point guard and then you sprint in and
12:05
you set another pick on the defender in drop.
12:07
So it's basically one screener, setting two screens on
12:09
a play and then your point guard can just
12:12
snake the dribble, turn back the other way and
12:14
get all the way to the rim. He had
12:16
sort of a pseudo version of that where he
12:18
didn't screen for Bronson initially, but then just sort
12:20
of snuck into the play and got a yokeage
12:22
his way to get Bronson a layup. You'll always
12:24
hear our boss David Locke very famously talking about
12:27
Rudy Gobert's screen assist back when he was on
12:29
the Utah Jazz. I would be interested in seeing
12:31
where I heart's numbers are on that because I just
12:33
think he was a pretty good screener when he came
12:35
into the Knicks. He has turned into a great screener
12:37
and it's just amazing how much offense he's able to
12:39
create for this team and how he's been able to
12:42
keep them afloat when he first came to New York.
12:44
And we all talked about like, oh, we're so excited
12:46
to see him as a passer. We're so excited to
12:48
see him as a passer. And it
12:50
just was not really happening the first 40
12:53
or so games for him as a Nick. And as he
12:55
unlocked that gear as a rebounder and as an aggressor
12:58
around the rim, I think
13:00
it just bought him more time on the court and
13:03
bought him more equity with Tom Thibodeau. And he
13:05
said, all right, why don't we start seeing what
13:07
you can do as a passer, as a playmaker?
13:09
I heart has fully embraced it. I know
13:12
people are not a big fan of my potential.
13:15
They're going to trade in the Robinson this
13:17
offseason theory. And not that that has to
13:19
happen, but it is just hard to imagine
13:22
this team going forward without Isaiah
13:24
Hartenstein as their starting center without having
13:27
playmaking at that position. The other
13:29
guy who had a really encouraging game for
13:31
New York was Alec Birks,
13:33
who we have crapped on to
13:36
Infiniti on this podcast. But at
13:38
18 points, five rebounds, one assist,
13:40
two steals in 21 minutes
13:42
on a relatively efficient five for 11
13:45
from the field, three for six from three, five for seven
13:47
from the line. Probably his best
13:49
game as a Nick.
13:53
I think it was big for him that
13:55
he got two different open threes in
13:57
this ball game, like one to start. And
14:00
another one on like a late, like kind of giving
14:03
go with Jericho Sims where Denver just sort of fell
14:05
asleep and he was wide wide open, but just consistently
14:07
did a good job attacking, getting
14:10
to the foul line like Isaiah Hardenstein, and it
14:12
was a no look when he was
14:14
kind of tip toe on the baseline, cut
14:16
for a layup and that was a
14:18
great, just great awareness by Burch for
14:20
someone who we've accused, I think rightfully
14:22
at times of just sort of playing
14:24
in his own world on
14:26
the Knicks and almost being a separate entity on
14:28
offense to the other four guys on the floor, like
14:30
that was just a great bit of like, all right, my teammate
14:32
needs help, like I'm gonna bail him out and I'm gonna get
14:35
a layup out of it, because I trust him to make that
14:37
play and make that pass. And
14:39
then he was able to like
14:42
lay in the fourth quarter, like really
14:44
nice hesitation, like out of control, close
14:48
out from Christian Brown, beat
14:50
it for a layup. I think that was the
14:52
bucket, if I'm remembering correctly, that cut it to
14:54
90 to 88, capped off that 12 to two
14:56
run that featured him and Bogdanovich on the floor
14:59
and it was not a good game for Bogdanovich, 14
15:02
minutes, just one to five, three points.
15:05
Did have two assists though, and I
15:07
thought honestly, like his plus seven was
15:09
maybe a little bit representative, even though like again,
15:12
he did not shoot the ball well, like the
15:14
only shot he made was in the midst of
15:16
that run, hitting about a 30 foot three, where
15:19
I thought those two were good, was
15:21
just again, figure out a way
15:23
to not like, like
15:26
it's the old LeBron quote, basically, don't stand
15:28
out, fit in, I know that's not the
15:31
quote, but something along those lines, like
15:33
Bogie didn't really force the issue, like consistently
15:35
like made the extra pass, like hitting Deuce
15:38
at one point on the right wing for
15:40
a three pointer and it's a
15:42
simple play, but those
15:45
two playing within flow, I think give them an opportunity
15:47
to contribute to the SNCCS team when they're whole. And
15:49
if they don't play within flow, if they play selfish,
15:52
if they kind of try to do their own pistons
15:54
thing, they're just
15:56
not gonna be a part of this rotation, when
15:58
it's all said and done. And then really, Real quick, cold
16:01
night for Josh Hart, maybe
16:03
exhaustion. I know I got banged up in the
16:05
comments for saying he's exhausted and that he bounced
16:08
back and it was before the Kings game and
16:10
dominated the Kings. What do I know?
16:13
Just two points, one of five shooting,
16:15
three rebounds, one assist. If
16:17
he's tired, he has every right to be. Nothing to
16:19
knock with Josh Hart. Similar with Dante Di
16:22
Vincenzo. Not a terrible game for him.
16:24
Again, he was torched by MPJ. That's
16:26
a ridiculous match for him and not what he should have
16:28
ever had to have. He can't even blame
16:30
Tom Thibito for that because the alternative was starting precious
16:32
to Chua and the defense probably would have been quite a
16:34
bit better. The offense would have been utterly
16:37
nonexistent without the four-out spacing around
16:39
Brunson and Hart's time. It
16:41
was the size that affected them so bad.
16:43
Then the defensive end of the floor would
16:45
have instead, I think, mucked up their offense
16:47
without having four out and without giving Jaylen
16:49
Brunson lanes to attack. So it
16:51
was a screwed if you do, screwed if you don't,
16:54
sort of situation. But
16:57
Di Vincenzo, even though this is a relatively good shooting
16:59
game for him from distance three for eight, I wanted
17:01
to zoom out and just look at his shooting month
17:03
to month. So in February, obviously
17:05
that was the heater form. 22
17:08
points a game, four rebounds, three assists. Shot
17:10
43% from the floor, 37% from three. And
17:15
again, that was an ridiculous volume that month. He was
17:17
taking 19 shots a game. Who would have ever thought
17:19
there would have been an 11-game stretch where Dante would
17:21
take 19 shots a game. 12
17:23
threes per game over that run. So
17:27
pretty good sample size. And before that, obviously he was
17:29
super efficient. Like you zoom back to December, 54% from
17:31
the field, 49% from three. And
17:34
then now to March, nine games in, 37% from
17:37
the field, 34% from three. Counting
17:40
stats are still good. 16, 4, and 4. Not
17:43
super far off from what he was doing
17:45
in February, but the efficiency has just fallen
17:47
off a cliff. And I think it is
17:50
sort of similar to what we were saying with Josh Hart
17:52
when he hit the playoffs last year. It is him carrying
17:55
a load in terms of volume that he has never come
17:57
close to carrying in the NBA. And I
17:59
think in future... seasons, he might be a little bit more
18:01
ready for that. This year it is hitting
18:03
him a little bit and again that is understandable
18:06
and it's just going to be interesting to watch to
18:08
see if on lower volume
18:10
like he can trade that off for
18:12
greater efficiency as the Knicks continue to
18:14
get healthy. But just I'm going to look forward going
18:16
forward. Alright guys, we're going to wrap this one up
18:20
with a little schedule watch, a little standings watch where the
18:22
Knicks are at, where the Cavs are at. If you have
18:24
any questions, feel free to throw them in if we have
18:26
a little extra time. We'll answer them before we wrap up
18:28
on locked on the Knicks. We mentioned
18:30
just getting through that West Coast League and three
18:33
and one is a massive, massive victory
18:35
for the Knicks. I absolutely would have taken two
18:37
and two. I would have understood one and three,
18:39
but by going three and one, they've kept themselves
18:41
in the running for the three seed in the
18:43
East, which they are now two
18:46
games in back of the Cleveland Cavaliers for.
18:48
They're also a half game behind the Orlando
18:50
Magic, who in one of their toughest remaining
18:52
games, knocked out the
18:54
New Orleans Pelicans and have to be
18:56
considered a factor in this race. But
18:58
for today, we're going to focus on
19:00
the Knicks and the Cavs. So the
19:02
Knicks upcoming schedule, plenty of opportunity to
19:05
make up some ground. The Nets, the
19:07
Pistons, the Raptors who have sort of
19:09
given up are sitting, Emmanuel quickly, Scottie
19:11
Barnes continues to be out with an
19:13
injury. RJ Barrett, I'm not 100% sure
19:15
if he is back or will be
19:17
back after the tragic death of his
19:19
younger brother. Of course, best wishes to
19:21
RJ. I don't think we got a chance to mention
19:23
that on the show first and foremost. Hopefully he's back
19:26
for that game and he's holding up as well as
19:28
possible. But that is a relatively easy stretch
19:30
of play for the New York Knicks. Nets,
19:32
Pistons, Raptors. And then you
19:34
get the Spurs on the road, despite the
19:36
way Victor Weman-Yama is playing. And it is
19:38
incredible. That game is not a game. The
19:41
Spurs of late have been exceptional. I've been
19:43
playing not only like a playoff team, but
19:45
like a top 14 with Weman-Yama is on
19:47
the floor. The guy is a
19:49
superstar right now. Like I would I would say
19:51
the way he's played over the last month, probably
19:53
top 20, 15, 20 player
19:55
in the NBA, pretty close to being on par
19:58
with someone like Jalen Brunson already. just
20:00
a rookie who doesn't totally know what he's doing
20:02
yet. So that is extraordinary. That game will be
20:04
a little bit tougher than you think. But Nick's
20:06
ripoff four straight wins there. Oklahoma
20:09
City, Miami, Sacramento, Chicago, let's just be conservative.
20:11
Call that a two and two stretch, that's
20:13
six and two for the Knicks. Let's just
20:15
say loss of the buck, six and three,
20:17
win at the Bulls, seven and three, Celtics
20:19
hopefully tanking, maybe not. We'll call that seven
20:21
and four. You win the last two
20:24
against the Nets and the Bulls, nine
20:26
and four finish for the New York
20:28
Knicks. So they would need the
20:33
Cavs to beat two games under that as
20:35
the Knicks have the tie breakers. So they
20:37
just need to tie the Cavs. Let's call
20:39
it 0-1 at Minnesota. We'll say 1-1 against
20:41
Miami. We'll say they trip up,
20:43
they lose one of the Hornets games, maybe they lose to
20:45
Miami instead, two and two. Sixers,
20:47
they beat the Sixers, they lose to Nuggets, three and
20:50
three, lose to Jazz,
20:52
beat the Suns, or they go one and one in
20:55
those two, four and four. I know, I'm just kind
20:57
of flip-flopping here. I'm going to say two straight losses
20:59
in Los Angeles against two desperate teams and less Donovan
21:01
Mitchell's back to those games. But for now, we're going
21:03
to call that four and six. And then I'm going
21:05
to say they win their last three. So if they
21:07
go seven and six, Knicks go nine and four, that
21:09
would be just enough for the Knicks to get the
21:11
three seed, pending what the Magic do. And the Magic
21:13
have a relatively favorable schedule. So there is a chance
21:16
they have something to say about that. I just don't
21:18
totally trust it. I have a feeling they are going
21:21
to slip up a little bit down the stretch. And
21:23
of course, it's largely contingent on if the
21:25
Knicks are going to be healthy down the
21:27
stretch. And if they get Mitchell Robinson, O.G.
21:29
and a no-be-back, much better stretch of
21:31
nine and four, a much better chance, excuse
21:33
me, of going nine and four. If those guys are
21:36
not back, the Knicks
21:38
would probably feel pretty good about going seven and
21:40
six the rest of the way, setting up a
21:42
four and five with Orlando, and what I think
21:44
would be an immensely winnable series, if
21:46
not a physically strenuous
21:49
one, of course, then you
21:51
are facing down the prospect of dealing with
21:53
Boston the second round. And the Knicks, as
21:55
much as we hate Boston, we
21:57
love New York, don't particularly want that
21:59
smoke. Pedro Sands Alberti says, Tom
22:02
Thibidot for president. You know
22:04
what? I'm with him. It's been
22:06
a great stretch for Tibbs. It's been a great stretch for
22:08
the Knicks despite a tough boss in Denver. So that'll do
22:10
it for today on Lock.Nics. I'm
22:12
Gavin Shaw. This has been your show. We
22:15
will be back on Monday with a recap of the next game unless
22:17
we're feeling frisky and we got it done on Sunday. But
22:20
tune in, subscribe, be sure to not miss an
22:22
episode. Leave a five-star review on iTunes if you
22:24
can. It really makes a big difference, gets more

22:30
will talk to you very, very soon on Lock.Nics.
