"Mark Doherty and Zach Rhoads prepared for a nasty argument between adversaries-- what happened instead was uplifting..."Mark Doherty's first contact with Zach Rhoads was through a twitter insult-- a response to the interview between Zach and Peter Hitchens.Zach decided to take him to task and asked him to defend his tweet live on the podcast. Mark agreed, as he'd promised himself he would never write a comment on social media that he wouldn't be willing to defend in real-life.The two prepared for a nasty argument between adversaries-- what happened instead was uplifting; they were reminded that, behind the interface was another human being. This interview is a reminder that discourse through social media is rarely fruitful and can hardly be called "discourse." Meanwhile, a conversation in good faith, voice-to-voice (or face-to-face), among two adults, is perhaps the most useful tool in the intellectual toolkit.
