I am Charlotte Casaragi and in partnership with

0:03

the House of Chanel, I present

0:05

to you the Les

0:07

Rincontres podcast. As

0:10

part of the Ronde de Voulet-Erer

0:12

et rue-combe-bond, this podcast spotlights the

0:14

birth of a female writer. You

0:17

can listen to the various episodes and

0:19

their authors on your preferred

0:21

streaming platforms. Hello

0:28

audio listeners and welcome to this new episode.

0:30

This one is sort of a bonus episode

0:32

really. It doesn't have a number. And

0:35

I think you can see from the title what this episode

0:37

is about because yesterday I got

0:40

to a million subscribers on YouTube,

0:43

which is a pretty cool milestone,

0:45

which is worth marking in

0:47

some way. And basically

0:49

in this episode, I decided that I

0:51

would try to record

0:54

my reactions to the moment when the

0:56

number changed from 999999, which is 999999

0:58

to a million because YouTube allows

1:07

you to see the number, a kind of

1:09

a live update of the number. The number goes

1:11

up and down. Anyway, you'll hear me talking about

1:13

that. And I talked

1:16

with my daughter a little bit at the dinner

1:18

table. There's a bit of rambling basically about all

1:20

of that stuff. But

1:22

I just wanted to say here only

1:25

in the audio version that despite the

1:27

fact that I've somehow

1:30

managed to get all these subscribers on

1:32

YouTube, and it seems my YouTube channel

1:34

is pretty popular, I still consider the

1:36

audio podcast to be the sort of

1:39

home of Luke's English podcast really, because

1:41

this has always been an audio show

1:43

from the very beginning really 15

1:46

years ago when I first started. And

1:49

audio listeners, I think that

1:51

there must be over a

1:54

million of you subscribing to the

1:56

audio podcast. I'm pretty sure there

1:58

are more audio listeners than video. listeners,

2:00

it's actually a little bit harder to

2:02

tell exactly how many

2:04

subscribers there are to Luke's English

2:07

podcast, the audio

2:09

version, because people subscribe to the

2:11

audio version on various platforms. You

2:14

know, there's the big ones like

2:16

Apple Podcasts and Spotify,

2:18

but also other podcast services

2:21

like Pocket Casts or Google

2:24

Podcasts, Audible even,

2:26

and various other ways in which

2:28

basically people like you, I suppose,

2:31

can subscribe to the audio version of this

2:33

show. That makes it a

2:35

little bit harder for me to track

2:37

exactly how many subscribers I have to

2:39

the audio show, but I'm certain that

2:42

I have more than a million now.

2:45

So it's just, it was a

2:47

little harder for me to find a specific

2:49

moment when I went, when I

2:52

crossed that line and got to

2:54

a million audio subscribers. So

2:57

well, I just want to also say

2:59

thank you to you for subscribing to

3:01

my audio podcast, if indeed you are

3:03

a subscriber. If you're not a subscriber,

3:05

it's very easy. Just click the subscribe

3:07

button or just add the podcast to

3:09

your library or whatever it is on

3:12

the particular service that you use. But

3:14

thank you for being a subscriber. Thank you for

3:16

listening to my podcast. I feel very lucky to

3:18

have an audience and it's just really

3:21

cool. You know, I'll talk more about that kind

3:23

of thing a little bit later

3:25

on in the episode. But yes,

3:27

audio listeners, hello. And really,

3:30

I've only sort of, I've only

3:32

really been adding

3:34

videos regularly on

3:36

YouTube for the last couple of years,

3:38

really, a couple of reasons for

3:41

that. The first one is that we

3:43

finally got fiber optic

3:45

internet installed in our apartment. That

3:47

was a few, that was a couple of years

3:49

ago. And so that

3:52

makes it much, much easier to upload

3:54

large video files because my videos are

3:56

pretty big, you know, because they're like

3:58

often more than an hour long. So

4:00

that was one of the reasons why

4:02

I started doing video because the

4:04

internet connection made it possible. Also I got

4:06

a new laptop Which

4:09

made it again much easier to actually produce

4:11

and store video

4:14

files and stuff so anyway,

4:16

that's kind of why the video stuff has happened

4:18

recently, but yeah audio has been going for such

4:20

a long time and Hopefully

4:23

audio listeners, you know You get the benefit of

4:25

the audio side of things which is as I've

4:27

said before the fact that it's so flexible You

4:30

can just kind of do whatever you want while

4:32

you listen to this. It really gives you that

4:34

extra bit of freedom That's the wonderful thing about

4:37

podcasting. I love podcasts and

4:39

listen to them all the time when

4:41

I'm traveling when I am doing housework

4:43

You know if I'm just doing the washing up

4:45

or something you know, we

4:47

all know how wonderful podcasts are and

4:51

In the audio versions of this

4:53

podcast you do get more

4:55

stuff you you often get extra content

4:57

That's not available in the video versions

5:01

For example, you get things like

5:03

this this introduction part or

5:05

often I do rambling bits at the

5:07

end of episodes. I do intros and

5:09

outros and other stuff So

5:12

anyway, thanks for subscribing to the

5:14

audio podcast and audio lepsters

5:17

You've been with me for a long time and

5:20

it's really cool to have you listening

5:22

to this podcast as well We're

5:24

going to get started in just a moment I

5:27

would like also to say premium

5:29

listeners. Hello. I just want

5:31

to give you a heads up that P56

5:38

5:58

6:00

6:07

a podcast app and stuff. If

6:09

you want more information though, if

6:11

6:13

6:29

carry on and you can

6:31

listen to the things I recorded yesterday on

6:34

my own and also with my daughter

6:36

and baby son making

6:38

a few funny noises in the

6:40

background. I hope you enjoy the episode. That's

6:43

it. All right then, here we go. Hello

7:01

listeners. Hello video viewers. So

7:04

today is Thursday the 1st

7:06

of February. It's actually 10

7:10

17 at night. And if you're

7:12

watching the video version, you can tell that I'm not

7:15

in my normal podcasting room in

7:17

my podcast. So but I'm just

7:19

in my living room and

7:23

it's the evening. My kids

7:26

are asleep. My wife is out having

7:28

dinner with her friend. So I'm on

7:30

my own this evening. But today, Thursday the 1st of February,

7:32

2014, no, sorry, I just forgot about 10 years of my

7:35

life there and yours.

7:41

Anyway, 1st of February, 2024. And

7:44

today just happens to be the

7:46

fateful day in history when

7:49

I get a million

7:51

subscribers on YouTube. Whoa.

7:53

Yeah, yeah, that's

7:56

right. A million subscribers on YouTube and... So

8:00

you know that start changes everything from

8:02

a Disney I now I'm an influencer

8:04

now. And so.

8:07

I see one can to do is I'm

8:09

going to buy my own private jet. And

8:12

just fly around. Maybe.

8:16

Leave my family and just. To.

8:19

Spend more time on private jet with lots of

8:21

women around. but why would they? Why are they

8:23

are there are don't know. But.

8:25

Us: what you do isn't it? When you, when you,

8:27

when you're a huge. Internet sensation? Isn't

8:29

that what you're supposed to do? And

8:32

then I'm gonna ain't gonna spend all my time

8:34

on a yacht. With. Son

8:36

sunglasses on. Blogging

8:39

Flogging myself. Physicists

8:42

logging myself us video

8:45

myself right? Yeah.

8:47

Flogging myself. I'm skyn to

8:49

be making aspiration know. Lifestyle.

8:53

Content on you tube. Talking.

8:55

About my for I Am

8:58

workout routine. And. Selling.

9:01

Protein. Bars or whatever. Now

9:05

that's not what I'm going to do. Of course,

9:07

that's ridiculous. versus. He knows you

9:09

look a lot of you. Tube is to

9:11

make it really big. They do sell the

9:14

dreamed I'd they they really sailor kind of.

9:16

See. Per se, it's

9:18

glamorous lifestyle. You

9:21

know, and it's aspiration alone is.

9:23

Not really the way it works in

9:26

reality. It's always

9:28

funny when you see when v

9:30

cheapest video themselves doing something like

9:33

that just like editing videos. But.

9:36

They are even if videoing themselves doing it

9:38

like why they just. Miss. Lately

9:40

they've just set up that camera to do that.

9:42

Anyway, I'm not here to complain or make

9:45

fun of you. to discuss fair enough. You

9:47

know everyone's gotta do what they do, I

9:49

suppose. Do. They well,

9:52

Anyway or not, that's not the point

9:54

anywhere. million subscribers on Youtube today. Woo.

9:57

Yeah, here I am. Celebrate your my own.

10:00

In an inner inner in if they

10:03

might. Dark living room with one light

10:05

on. A. Birds

10:08

eye out been looking it I mean

10:11

I, I I I ceased. I still

10:13

have more. Podium:

10:15

Podcast listeners Although it is hard

10:17

to know the exact number because

10:20

people subscribe on different platforms he

10:22

notes, but on you tube he

10:24

got one platform and one number

10:26

and. I don't

10:29

as you know about this bursts. if

10:31

you have a You Tube channel is

10:33

he create content and publish it on

10:35

you Tube. You have your You Tube

10:38

Studios which is a sort of dashboard

10:40

where you can manage your consent and

10:42

change all the settings and you could

10:45

also look at your statistics including quite

10:47

a cool thing which allows you to

10:49

check the number of subscribers your channel

10:51

has and it's like it. it's allies.

10:54

Update: So it's just it. just shows

10:56

you the number of subscribers and the number goes

10:58

up or down. As. People

11:00

subscribe or unsubscribe.

11:03

God. Forbid Heaven forbid that anyone would

11:06

do that. But anyway as the number

11:08

changes you know goes up and down

11:10

and you can see it Sought Been

11:12

today. I've been. I've. Had that.

11:15

Had the open on one of the

11:17

windows on my computer and every now and

11:20

then a flight had a little nook or

11:22

recorded at a premium episode earlier today

11:24

that p Fifty six part eight so if

11:26

your premium subscribe can actually see that sometimes

11:29

during the episode. You know, shadows

11:31

moments with you. I have a little look at the number.

11:33

And. So say here's what the number is. It.

11:36

Might get to a million today. So.

11:38

Have been. I have to admit, I've been

11:40

kind of. Checking. In on that

11:43

number and having a look at it. Quite.

11:45

Regularly. And. it

11:47

turns out that this evening is

11:49

the time to the number is

11:51

gonna hit a million a case so

11:54

i decided i'd do a couple of

11:56

recordings i wanted to capture the

11:58

moments know, I

12:00

mean, I know it's just a number but I suppose

12:02

it's a landmark, isn't it? It's a sort of a

12:04

milestone and a

12:07

significant moment, I suppose. I've

12:09

been doing my

12:11

podcast for 15 years.

12:13

It'll be 15 years this April. That's

12:16

a long time. That's a lot of work. I've

12:18

worked hard. I've put a lot of time and

12:20

effort into this and it's

12:23

good to see some sort

12:25

of outcome from that. So it's very

12:27

happy. I'm very happy to get to

12:29

a number. It's nice to get to

12:31

a big round number and

12:34

so I thought that I would sort of capture

12:36

that moment. So I

12:38

was wondering how to do it and

12:41

in fact earlier on and so

12:43

I'm recording this actually sort of

12:45

later at the end of the day but

12:47

earlier on I

12:50

was having dinner with my daughter and

12:52

little baby son and so

12:54

I opened my laptop

12:56

and said to my daughter, look at this number.

12:58

Look, do you know what this means? This is

13:00

like the number of subscribers I've got on YouTube.

13:03

She knows what YouTube is. Sometimes she watches YouTube

13:05

Kids. She watches like

13:07

really quite stupid videos on

13:10

YouTube Kids. They're quite entertaining and

13:13

she watches like Netflix and stuff. So she

13:16

knows what YouTube is and

13:18

I think she knows that Amelia,

13:20

she's six years old. I think she

13:22

knows how big a million is. So

13:26

I just decided to share the moment with

13:28

her and we made a recording. So what you're going

13:30

to hear now is me

13:33

speaking with my daughter,

13:35

our baby. I mean

13:38

my wife, the baby's there as

13:40

well and so first of

13:43

all you're going to hear a little

13:45

conversation with my daughter talking about my

13:48

number of subscribers and just

13:50

sort of rambling with her. It's

13:52

quite silly. It's quite fun and

13:55

then after that you're going to join me again

13:58

Sitting in this position. In. My

14:00

living room as the number. It's.

14:03

A million. Okay, so if

14:05

you want to join me so that's

14:07

experience, then you're welcome to stick around.

14:10

And Keep watching the video. Keep Listening To This

14:13

episode. Was a lot.

14:15

People will not be watching the video. you'll just

14:17

be listening to this in in audio landed podcast

14:19

land which is great because they were. There isn't

14:21

really that much to see on the videos. My

14:25

daughter and my son a know in the

14:27

video. That part

14:29

is just audiotapes, but you can see

14:31

the number of subscribers changing. So

14:34

I did record my screen see

14:36

conceded that the numbered change going up

14:38

and down. Because he goes

14:40

down as well. When. People unsubscribe. so

14:42

if you if you're not watching the video

14:44

of us and.where you're not really missing anything

14:46

he really it just missing a number. going

14:48

up slowly, going down a bit and then

14:50

going up again. Okay

14:54

but anyways you are watching the video

14:56

version. you can join me and watch.

14:59

The. Moment when the number. Goes.

15:01

From a six figure number two, a seven

15:03

figure number. One

15:05

and seek zeroes is

15:07

very exciting. And

15:10

if you want to stick around and

15:12

enjoy that moment with me, then you're

15:14

welcome. And you can do that in

15:16

this episode. So right? So.

15:18

Now let's listen to that recording I made

15:20

in my daughter earlier and a half to

15:22

say So we recorded this at the dinner

15:24

table. And.

15:26

I think they're going to be sounds of

15:29

eating is all right or know that bothers

15:31

some people. but you do hear the baby

15:33

in the background making some sort of baby

15:35

noises. Are I hope that's not

15:37

too distracting as he should be. Okay,

15:39

but now even join me my daughter

15:41

and my son. At the dinner

15:43

table earlier so he about the number of

15:45

subscribers of Go On You Tube and some

15:48

stuff about penguins as well. I

15:50

don't know how we ended up talking about penguins

15:52

trying to take over the world's. But.

15:54

We did. Okay, Here

15:56

we go. Okay, So

15:58

we're sitting here as. The Korea The Dinner

16:01

Table. With I normally

16:03

do recordings at the dinner table and also

16:05

we shouldn't rating speak with our mouths full.

16:08

Price is your muscles. Left

16:12

is is she's nodding says nodding.

16:15

Sort of the talk with your muscle

16:17

a case. another difficult because we go

16:19

pizza ovens were enjoying eating it. But

16:22

anyway, you know what you're looking at here on the

16:24

screen. So. These numbers mean

16:26

now no idea as old as know

16:28

I saw this the see this with

16:30

this picture here do know that is

16:33

hop sloths as many as ram down

16:35

to see. What

16:38

it says under these. He

16:41

did. His

16:44

side said it did. This blue

16:46

line actually just represents the number

16:48

the the growth in subscribers over

16:50

the last twenty four hours. But.

16:54

To be honest or to change this

16:56

line to shows both other lines gonna

16:58

waste. This has to change. Thoughts.

17:01

To all time lifetimes from when

17:04

I first started the channel in

17:06

two Thousand and nine. To.

17:08

Now you can see is really is. Jumped

17:11

up over that time.

17:16

I. Was it was a number changing? Now that

17:18

I don't know why. Because.

17:22

It was on Nine Hundred Ninety Nine. Yeah.

17:25

That that's up to date now. So.

17:27

It's gone up by this kind of do know

17:29

why it went up in his wake as I

17:31

published a few as of around this time where

17:33

it started going. you can have more peace here

17:35

where he started going of us when I started

17:37

doing videos properly. And

17:40

then this is when I published

17:42

a few videos. the Barracks especially

17:44

popular which is pretty really push

17:46

the channel towards a million solo

17:48

soon Unsubscribed Dc that's the number

17:50

went down. Who subscribes to Lucy

17:52

was podcast on you Tube say

17:54

made a terrible mistake. That and

17:56

loss. and so he

17:58

can see the number of subscribers is

18:01

going, hopefully going up steadily, although

18:03

sometimes it goes down. Someone makes

18:05

a mistake and they slip and

18:07

their finger presses the unsubscribe button

18:09

by mistake. I mean, that's the

18:11

only possible answer. Only

18:13

possible reason why someone will unsubscribe from my

18:15

YouTube channel. Or maybe not. Really? What could

18:17

be, what could the other reasons be? If

18:20

they don't like it. Why

18:22

would they not like it? I don't know. Yeah,

18:25

I don't know either. It

18:27

went down again. What's going on? Hehehehe.

18:32

Should we stop talking about the number going down?

18:34

Maybe that's, maybe I've got another

18:37

theory as well. So actually I've got some

18:39

theories about why the number might go down sometimes.

18:41

So one of those reasons is at the

18:43

beginning of the year, I published

18:45

an episode which has been especially

18:47

popular because it was all about sort of,

18:50

stop fiddling with Apple. Because

18:53

it was all about like, it basically was

18:55

a very popular episode and that got a

18:57

lot of subscribers, a lot of people subscribed

18:59

to the channel because of that video. And

19:02

a few months before I did a story

19:04

episode which was very popular. A lot of

19:06

people subscribed because of that as well. And

19:08

then I go ahead

19:10

and publish other episodes that are

19:12

not story episodes that are different

19:15

to the ones that they subscribed

19:17

because of. And

19:19

then, so there's other episodes that I do and

19:21

they're like, oh, this isn't what I expected. This

19:23

is what I wanted. I'm gonna unsubscribe. Like

19:25

that. It went up again. Yay.

19:30

Can you actually read that number? It's

19:40

good. Oh, it went up. It's good but it's a

19:42

bit bigger than that. 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 1, 9. Well,

19:45

can you read them individually? Right.

19:52

So, excuse me, let me just finish my

19:54

mouthful. You are speaking,

19:57

You are chewing with your mouth full.

20:00

Go similar to with my mouth full. I

20:02

want to stall. I mean. You

20:05

kinds? of ceiling

20:07

you are eating was last. Year

20:10

I can see when. You

20:14

speak man. So he

20:16

Irish Times. When

20:20

you're when you. Know

20:22

your rights of course you're right and

20:24

any my been voicing the source of

20:27

so my listeners right now who like

20:29

I can't believe that his recording said

20:31

things with at the dinner table. When.

20:33

They first went up again, didn't it?

20:35

So how do you say dismiss numbers

20:37

A big number. This is Nine Hundred

20:39

and Ninety Nine Thousand Nine Hundred and

20:41

twenty. Non is nice. You

20:44

know thousand, Nine Hundred and twenty know a

20:46

thing. To be honest, it might take an

20:48

hour before he goes up to a million

20:50

at this rate. At this

20:52

rate of miles away from it

20:54

went up again. Okay. So.

20:56

I mean would you seem to think this is. Is

20:59

to think I'm going to get to a million. Since.

21:01

The I'll have a million people subscribing to

21:04

much. On youtube channel Thing as

21:06

hell. Yes,

21:09

Yes! Ecosystem for have.

21:12

You done more pizzas. For.

21:16

Wealth. And that scholars again excellence

21:18

to to fry. It's what is

21:20

your little brother. Think of this.

21:26

Isn't. Yeah, so

21:28

would you say. Okay,

21:31

okay, let's beat those. The food is

21:33

a little brother. I.

21:38

Can. See: big

21:40

sister. A means

21:42

of these numbers small number of the

21:45

number of really is it is a

21:47

islam even heard of. Is

21:51

it? Further,

21:53

bigger numbers and thirty two music a number the

21:55

number. Of

21:58

times on a Thursday. Definitely.

22:02

It's most do anything. To

22:04

say is. Billion

22:07

as well. Which. Is.

22:10

A thousand million. Thrive

22:13

on a society that it was a cup

22:15

of. He sent. Me

22:17

to died he can you cuffs? What's

22:22

the most Sorry? say say say

22:24

it. Normally the my listeners want

22:26

to hear a polite little girls.

22:32

Doing. Maybe.

22:37

My pizza for his father. May

22:40

be sad sad. As.

22:53

Well walk down. Because

22:56

I feel a little brother game.

23:01

Is exactly the so it's a may want to hear his

23:03

miss. With

23:06

as on the protagonists are can is

23:08

trying to prove any sensible. Remember

23:12

me and said is surprising isn't

23:14

it really. Means he from

23:16

out there subscribing to this will die.

23:18

As we said before may be some

23:21

of them subscribe to say likes to

23:23

one of my episodes might not story

23:25

episode ideas and then made me just

23:27

waiting for me to publish more things

23:29

like that and yeah and then again

23:32

you know other people are like a

23:34

lot the story one. I

23:36

subscribe because of that for then. I'm also interested in

23:38

his other stuff as well cause he does a variety

23:40

of different things. For

23:44

I'm eating know so can you say

23:46

something? Families

23:51

So he. Says

23:57

he says now thinking of will have another thing.

24:00

The nice things you can say about me but

24:02

didn't pay her to say this. By the way,

24:04

I know bribed her with pizza. As.

24:11

He learns about. You

24:15

learn some interesting about geography. So

24:19

so my my my audience or in

24:21

in many different countries in the world.

24:25

On different continents. He. Learned

24:27

about continents how many continents on

24:29

as saying the name them. Cat

24:35

Caf as. A Our same

24:37

thousand and nine. And

24:40

ten here last. Sadly,

24:43

yes, Finally

24:45

so scared you. Guys,

24:47

where are we know? That.

24:52

Very good mouth say Clinton

24:54

says are starting to cousins

24:57

are in Australia New. Assignment

25:01

around. Butler the number

25:03

went up against. you know? well that was

25:06

so and again. You know what I is

25:08

is those people before his they change their

25:10

mind, they are subscribed for the name Me

25:12

to be added. A deep sense of regret.

25:15

My oh no, I'm going to miss out

25:17

for all this wonderful content. What?

25:19

Was I thinking quickly? We subscribe.

25:23

Successes. Maybe for the nice.

25:33

Nice. Or

25:36

guys, your brother's making some funny

25:38

noises. Okay,

25:40

I think we're going to stop. The performance is

25:42

hop on a maybe. It's

25:45

it's own. Nine thousand and know if

25:47

is so. Nine thousand Nine hundred ninety

25:49

Nine nine hundred Ninety. We might recall

25:51

something again, so we can react when

25:54

it gets to a million. If

25:56

we get so many and. we can

25:58

go yeah hey a million Yeah, hey

26:02

and then we'll stop at the recording again. What

26:04

do you think? Plus

26:07

you've got homework to do Yes,

26:10

you do you have a spelling test to do Mm-hmm.

26:13

You will learn to spell those words All

26:16

right, so we're gonna do that It's

26:20

still recording yeah, yeah 926

26:24

now Okay,

26:28

it's amazing isn't it that we can see the

26:30

number just going up live who are these people

26:33

where are they? What

26:35

are they doing? Well, you imagine just people in

26:37

in their kitchens on their phones or people in

26:40

living rooms or libraries Like

26:42

looking at my YouTube channel when they

26:45

should be studying or people in offices

26:47

when they should be working then instead

26:49

They're secretly watching my videos and subscribing

26:51

people sitting on the toilet on

26:54

their phones People

26:56

on the bus or the train it

26:58

went up again Another

27:01

one another commuter travelling somewhere

27:03

one of those seven continents

27:05

probably not Antarctica, but who

27:07

knows why not? again

27:11

Why would they not be in Antarctica do you think? What

27:15

do you know about Antarctica? I don't know

27:17

well, it's all just snow and penguins Is

27:22

that the music of Antarctica? It's

27:25

just penguins. Yeah, and snow Maybe

27:30

the maybe it's penguins that are subscribing

27:32

maybe Maybe

27:39

maybe the penguins are all learning

27:41

English and one day one

27:43

day they'll be like right. We're ready now We're

27:46

ready to take over the world

27:48

and then the penguin revolution comes

27:55

Here come the penguins But

28:00

they wouldn't be going, they'd be going penguin

28:02

power. You

28:05

know the thing about penguins, the

28:09

advantage they have over us is

28:11

that they can fly underwater. Did

28:15

you know that? We're just tiny. No,

28:17

they fly really well underwater. Have

28:19

you never seen a penguin flying underwater? No. You

28:22

have, you have in the zoo. Oh yeah. Can

28:24

they fly in the air? Yes. No.

28:28

And not unless you like, someone throws them into

28:31

the air. Oh yeah. Which you shouldn't do. Never

28:33

throw a penguin in the air. Why? Unless

28:35

you're throwing it in towards the water. Because

28:38

it would be cruel, wouldn't it? To throw,

28:40

to throw, grab a penguin and throw it

28:42

in the air. Unless it was like, unless

28:44

it had invaded your campsite and was eating

28:47

your sandwiches, then you could maybe legitimately defend

28:49

yourself. If it was coming to get you, attacking

28:52

you, if it was an act of self-defense, maybe you

28:54

could grab it and throw it back

28:56

into the sea. Yeah. Okay.

29:01

Well, this talk of penguins

29:03

is not helping the number,

29:05

is it? Yeah. That

29:10

little noise your brother made is like a

29:13

review of the conversation. No,

29:15

it's like a little Parisian person reviewing. Not

29:18

very good. The penguin

29:20

thing was funny, but I mean really. Okay.

29:23

Well, we'll stop now, shall we?

29:25

No. We'll maybe carry on later. No,

29:27

no. I need to eat my pizza. I can't

29:29

just talk, not eat. I want more pizza. Of

29:32

course you do. Look, we're going to eat a little

29:34

bit more pizza. Oh, it went up again.

29:37

We'll eat a little bit more pizza. What

29:39

number's that at the end there? Nine. Yeah,

29:41

this one as well. Two, nine and ten.

29:44

So nine, two and nine is? Nineteen.

29:48

No, no, two. Twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-one. 29

30:00

people! It's

30:03

99 people! 29 people! 29

30:06

people! Imagine

30:08

29 people in a room. Imagine, remember your

30:10

birthday. There

30:12

was about 29 people in the room then. Now imagine if there

30:15

was a knock at the door. Oh, 29 people, that's a lot of people for

30:17

a birthday. Knock, knock, knock, knock, open the door,

30:19

hello. Yeah, it's 999,000 people. It's

30:22

99,000 people. It's 99,000 people. Knock,

30:26

knock, knock, open the door, hello. Yeah, it's 999,900 other

30:28

people. Imagine.

30:34

It's a lot of people, isn't it? Yeah, you're

30:36

going to have some pizza in a second. Just say this

30:38

for me. Okay.

31:00

Alright. We'll stop and we'll

31:02

continue, maybe when I'm about to get a

31:04

million, but you might be asleep when that

31:06

happens. Yeah,

31:08

I'm sorry. Okay. Bye for now. Bye bye! 8th

31:24

deadline. Yikes. 2024,

31:28

10, and should sound different. With

31:49

31:52

If we counted those on air, this ad would last over

31:54

1,157 days. But

31:58

if we counted the time it takes to make a

32:00

donation... possible it would take just a few clicks because

32:02

32:09

32:11

purchase that's bombas.com/a cast code a

32:13

cast. Okay

32:18

so it's it's

32:20

late in the evening now both kids are

32:22

asleep I'm all on

32:24

my own at home my wife is actually out this

32:27

evening having dinner

32:29

with her friend but

32:32

anyway so have a look at this 999,996 I thought

32:38

I'd you know I

32:41

thought I'd do some sort of live reaction I'd

32:44

say live I mean I thought I'd record

32:46

my reaction to this going up

32:49

to a million if in fact it does there's

32:52

still part of me which thinks it'll get to 999,999

32:54

and then suddenly everyone's

32:58

going to change their mind and it's gradually

33:00

going to climb back down to

33:02

where it was before but

33:05

anyway if things continue to go as they

33:07

have been going then this is going to

33:10

become a million how fascinating and

33:15

I had loads of things to say which

33:18

I can't remember now I don't

33:21

think I should start congratulating myself just yet

33:24

you know I have to wait until this

33:27

gets to a million before I start doing the kind of

33:32

typical one million

33:34

views YouTube reaction

33:37

video where I'm very

33:39

very humbly thank everyone for subscribing to

33:42

my channel which

33:44

you know is true I do I am

33:46

grateful for everyone for subscribing because obviously

33:49

each number represents

33:52

one person who went home I will subscribe

33:54

to this there's another one 999,997 I'm

34:04

so thanks for subscribing. Thanks for all

34:06

those people. Thanks thank you to you

34:09

If you are subscriber and you're one

34:11

of those numbers. Really? Thanks

34:13

Eloise for a suit is fine to. See.

34:16

That number going up and overseas for

34:18

a satisfying for someone like me who

34:20

makes contents alone as of English who

34:22

contend for anyone to actually see that

34:24

people are interested in it. And.

34:27

That they like it and they want to

34:29

see more of it and so they subscribe

34:31

to Maisie really isn't it. I

34:33

mean he know when I when. When.

34:36

I left university. I have no idea what I wanted

34:38

to do with my life. And

34:41

you know, I was so thought that I might

34:43

end up working in the media in some way.

34:46

After the degree I did and stuff. But.

34:49

I. It doesn't seem that appealing to me

34:51

because I didn't feel like. I.

34:53

Should really. And this is a bit of a cliche,

34:55

but I didn't feel like I could make much of

34:57

an impact. Plus. Anyway, have my

35:00

dad. Had had his

35:02

career in the media. right?

35:05

In the sort of see know that

35:07

let's say traditional media television and radio

35:09

a little bit. That.

35:11

Was his worlds and he built a

35:13

really successful career in that world. And.

35:16

For me it felt like murder nosedive like

35:18

of necessarily go any place in this world.

35:22

But. I was wanted to create things and

35:24

make stuff. And when

35:26

I first started. When

35:28

I was first a teacher and English

35:31

teacher or this vague idea I wanted

35:33

to make video content for known as

35:35

of english. Births,

35:37

Are. There. Wasn't really a platform for

35:39

it. and now of course there's you tube of

35:41

us to use. Eve is really well established now.

35:44

It's been going for ages and ages.

35:47

And insects. It's

35:50

now so well established that a lot

35:52

of the laws you to possessions quit

35:54

the platform this year. Quite.

35:56

famously i dunno see follow lots of you

35:58

tube is that's been a trend

36:02

over the last few weeks of people

36:04

quitting and other people making

36:07

videos about the fact that apparently

36:09

everyone is quitting YouTube. So

36:12

I mean it's... Oh, I went down, someone

36:14

changed their mind. I went

36:17

down from 9,999, 998 to back down to 997.

36:25

That's a pity, isn't it? Anyway,

36:27

so what was I saying? So

36:29

YouTube, well, the

36:31

cool thing about it, this and podcasting,

36:33

because really I do

36:35

a podcast. It's Luke's English Podcast. So first

36:37

and foremost, it's a podcast with a YouTube

36:40

channel, but the YouTube has really sort of

36:42

blown up recently since

36:44

I started videoing myself

36:46

recording my podcast. But

36:49

YouTube is so cool because

36:51

it's so direct and so kind

36:53

of do it yourself. I

36:55

love that about this new media.

37:00

Not that it's new media, it's not really new

37:02

media so much anymore, but just

37:04

this self-publishing is so great in

37:08

the sense that you can just make something on

37:12

your own. You don't need producers,

37:16

you don't need all these other extra

37:18

people, you don't need to

37:20

work your way up in the career ladder,

37:22

you can immediately start making content and

37:25

that's great and just publish it and the same day that

37:27

you make it, your audience can

37:29

start watching it. Obviously, it takes

37:31

a long, long, long time to

37:33

get an audience. I'm

37:36

lucky, I'm very lucky of course

37:38

because I've

37:40

got something that my audience, oh another

37:42

person changed their mind, back

37:45

up to 998 and then back down to

37:47

997 again. Is that just

37:49

one person subscribing and unsubscribing and

37:51

then subscribing and unsubscribing again? Maybe.

37:54

What was I rambling

37:57

about? I don't know, it's a bit late in

37:59

the day. And

38:01

to be honest, I'd rather be just sort of

38:03

sitting on the sofa drinking a cup of tea,

38:06

not really thinking about anything. But here I

38:08

am doing this, not

38:11

in my podcasting room, but just in

38:13

my living room with

38:16

most of the lights off and just one

38:18

lamp on the table here and

38:20

just me in sort of semi-darkness

38:23

staring at this computer screen waiting

38:25

for a number to arrive. Anyway,

38:28

I was saying that YouTube is great because

38:30

and podcasting is great because it's so direct

38:33

that you can just make something, publish it

38:35

and then people get to consume it right

38:37

there and then. It's a

38:39

bit like stand-up comedy that's all 9-9-9-9-9-9. We're

38:43

on the cusp. It's like stand-up comedy because

38:46

you can think of a joke or a

38:48

story or routine, go down to

38:50

a club, get on stage, do it that

38:52

evening, have your audience

38:55

hear it. Hopefully it gets laughs.

38:58

So it's so straight and so clear and

39:00

direct. It's similar to doing this. But

39:03

it takes a long time, you know, it really

39:05

does take a long time to build up to

39:07

the point where you've got an audience and not

39:09

everyone gets that far. There it is, look. It

39:12

just changed a million subscribers. Oh

39:15

my goodness. One zero

39:17

zero zero zero zero zero zero.

39:20

Unbelievable. I can't

39:23

believe it. A million

39:25

people. Just

39:27

incredible. Thanks a lot for

39:29

subscribing to my podcast. That's going to go down and

39:31

oh it went up. It's gone up. One

39:34

million and one. Someone

39:36

out there is the one million

39:39

and first subscriber to

39:41

this show on YouTube. It

39:43

might go down. It might go back down. That

39:46

would be an anti-climax if

39:49

it suddenly started going backwards. You know,

39:51

I've got a weird feeling it's going to do that. I

39:54

wonder how many subscribers I'm going to get

39:56

it eventually. Right. How

39:59

long am I going to do this? As far

40:01

as I'm concerned, I'm happy to keep going doing

40:03

this podcast. You

40:06

know, I don't really have any plans to stop.

40:08

I'll have to stop eventually because I'll just be

40:10

too tired, you know, because

40:12

it's work. So anyway,

40:14

I was saying that it does take work and it

40:16

takes time to build an audience and

40:19

I've worked hard, you know, I've worked

40:21

hard to get to this point, just

40:24

making content week in week out.

40:27

But to be honest, it hasn't really felt like work

40:29

that much because it's always just been

40:31

the thing I wanted to do and that's

40:33

just I love just making stuff. Even

40:36

just just talking even, you

40:38

know, it doesn't have to be some big production. Again

40:42

that's another thing I like about this. It's

40:44

not some big production. I've got friends

40:46

who work in television, who've

40:49

worked in films and things like that. It's

40:52

an incredibly big project, you know. It

40:55

takes so much time to

40:57

get the project off the ground. There are

40:59

so many people involved. There

41:01

are so many complex factors, so

41:04

many frustrations, so

41:06

many meetings, meetings with producers,

41:08

meetings with writers, with casting

41:10

directors, with actors,

41:13

with financers. You

41:16

go round and round in circles, even making the

41:18

damn thing, even if it's a small project, it's

41:21

still a huge thing. But

41:23

with this, you know, it's just so

41:26

straightforward. It really can just be a

41:28

person with a microphone and

41:30

a camera, you know. Not even

41:32

a camera. For years and years, I've

41:34

been doing this without a camera. It's

41:37

gone up again, 1,000,000 and 3. So

41:42

I like that. I like that about this

41:44

medium that it's very simple and clear. But

41:47

yes, I've been lucky because, you

41:49

know, being an English teacher means

41:52

that I've got something to offer to the

41:55

world, right? I've got my particular

41:57

set of teaching skills or at least I've

41:59

got my own. got English. I'm

42:02

very fortunate. I know that. I'm

42:05

fortunate to have grown

42:08

up being someone who just learned

42:11

English in childhood.

42:13

That's very lucky because it means that I've got this

42:15

thing that a lot of people want to learn and

42:18

I'm happy to help them learn it. It's

42:21

cool. It's really cool. I love

42:23

sharing my language and culture. I

42:26

do love learning languages. I know I beat

42:28

myself up about my French but I

42:32

do actually love speaking French and

42:34

getting it right and communicating in

42:36

another language. It's so

42:38

cool. It really is like learning a

42:41

whole other language and operating. It's like

42:43

a whole different world that

42:45

opens up to

42:47

you when

42:50

you speak another language, a whole different part

42:53

of your life, a whole different medium. It's

42:57

another language and it's just a really cool thing

43:00

to do. I had the

43:02

same experience and feeling speaking

43:05

Japanese when I lived in Japan going out

43:08

to my local bar and hanging out with my

43:10

local friends who I only ever saw in that

43:13

bar. We would just chat

43:15

together and drink cocktails and play

43:17

darts. I learned to

43:19

hold down some basic conversations in

43:22

Japanese and that was so exciting,

43:24

so refreshing and so invigorating. Language

43:26

learning is brilliant. I'm

43:28

very lucky that I have

43:30

a language that lots

43:32

of people want to learn and

43:35

that I've spent

43:38

a lot of time working really hard on

43:41

being an English teacher and working

43:43

in classrooms and really trying

43:45

to do my best, trying to learn

43:47

the ways of the English teacher to

43:50

try to help people learn this language

43:52

effectively and also trying

43:54

to learn how to make people laugh

43:56

and practicing Entertaining people on

43:59

stage. I've

44:01

worked hard at it, but I've also

44:03

been lucky in the sense that he

44:06

knows goal of got a like i'm

44:08

a language the people want to learn

44:10

and also got some some experience in

44:12

Oath. Like. Teaching for

44:14

many years when they weren't things like

44:17

podcasting and you tube, just teaching and

44:19

just trying to. Improve.

44:21

As a teacher. But.

44:24

Anyway, thanks to you for subscribing is indeed

44:26

you have subscribed. If you haven't subscribed, well

44:28

you know you could consider subscribing to new

44:30

And I think I know why a lot

44:32

of people have subscribed to. this channel is

44:34

like when I was saying earlier when I

44:36

was talking to my daughter. Not

44:39

the stuff about penguins, it's

44:41

just that was fun. But

44:43

now I mean I'm. Not

44:46

why. Why? People have

44:48

subscribed to the podcast. And

44:50

he can see the blue line. It's

44:53

sort of marks the the progression

44:55

is my. Subscribe.

44:57

Accounts. That. There.

45:00

Are several moments when the line definitely

45:02

goes up. And. Those I think

45:04

those of episode. Thus when I published

45:06

episodes that kind of went viral the

45:08

got picked up by the algorithm. Especially,

45:11

you can see one around about.

45:15

March. April. Of

45:17

last year. I think that see,

45:19

I'm. The. One called Parsons Pleasure

45:21

Learning this with a short story which

45:24

is now like. Probably. My

45:26

most popular videos. And

45:29

you know I get regular comments on that

45:31

from people saying they really enjoyed it and

45:33

the they sell are they learnt a lot

45:35

of English from it and stuff. So

45:37

it's learning this with a short story. Mostly.

45:41

The.that has really lifted the

45:43

channel. Like this. Those.

45:46

Learning. english with a short story episodes of the

45:48

ones i think most popular and as attracted most

45:50

subscribers so i know that and of course i

45:52

will be doing more of that kind of thing

45:54

i know that that's what people have subscribed for

45:56

and that they want i'll be doing more of

45:58

that sort of thing But at

46:01

the same time, I will continue to do

46:03

what I've always done, which is to make

46:05

the kind of content that ultimately that I

46:07

would like to make. And

46:09

I think that may be one of the keys to

46:13

if I know anything about anything about

46:15

doing this stuff, it's that you've also,

46:17

it's easy to burn out, you know,

46:19

you can burn out by making

46:21

content all the time and sort of try

46:23

to please the subscribers

46:26

or try to bring in new subscribers

46:28

trying to catch the algorithm on YouTube

46:30

or on a podcast feed or whatever

46:33

it is. You know, it

46:35

can be a struggle to play that game and

46:37

to come up with content all the time can

46:40

be demanding. But really what you've got to do

46:42

is you've got to kind of make

46:45

sure you keep enjoying it. And that

46:47

does also mean making content that you

46:49

want to make as well. And so

46:51

I sort of try and balance, you

46:53

know, just keeping up the variety. For

46:56

example, talking to friends and family,

46:58

having enjoyable conversations, which I really

47:01

hope will also be enjoyable for

47:03

you as well. And just following

47:06

my sort of inspiration

47:09

and just talking about whatever thing

47:11

I want to talk about while

47:13

also trying to present it

47:16

in a way that hopefully everyone out

47:18

there is interested in. Was that a good sentence?

47:20

I don't even know if that was a correct

47:22

sentence. Sometimes you just

47:24

have to just talk and you have to

47:26

just do your best, don't you? And

47:28

hope sometimes that the grammar

47:30

actually holds together even

47:33

in your first language. So

47:35

yes, short story episodes and probably some

47:37

other ones like some of the rambling

47:39

episodes, some episodes with certain guests have

47:42

been the really popular things. And

47:44

of course, I will continue to do those things.

47:46

I'm always looking for good stories that I can

47:48

use. But at the same time, you

47:51

know, I understand that I've got to kind

47:53

of keep things fresh and have a variety

47:55

of stuff in my show in

47:58

order to make sure I don't... burn

48:00

out and that I can continue to do

48:02

this and I enjoy it. Someone unsubscribed because

48:04

they're like he's not gonna do stories

48:07

episodes every time I'm out of here.

48:10

Of course this isn't happening live so actually

48:12

I've got no idea why that person unsubscribed.

48:15

Oh dear but oh it's painful it hurts when

48:18

the number goes down.

48:21

But anyway you know what? What's a million? What's

48:23

the difference between a million and 999,999? I

48:25

mean you know it's just numbers isn't

48:31

it really? Oh that

48:33

person changed their mind and went back

48:36

again. I'm only joking Luke I'm still

48:38

subscribed. It's

48:40

not about the numbers is it? It

48:43

shouldn't be anyway. Obviously it's important that

48:46

your work is popular and that you

48:48

try to be a success. That's

48:51

important. But

48:55

and also it's important you know for the

48:58

money size you know let's not forget

49:00

that. Obviously that's important and through

49:02

ad revenue you know there's

49:04

normally an advert at the beginning of my episodes one

49:07

in the middle and one at the end. Ad

49:10

revenue does bring in you know

49:12

money which I need to buy pizza

49:15

and yoga and and

49:18

pencils and things you

49:20

know and to pay the bills. Obviously

49:23

you understand. So that's important too.

49:25

So the numbers are important to an

49:27

extent but also they

49:29

are just numbers and ultimately

49:33

you've got to just try to enjoy your

49:35

work as well you know and I must

49:38

not lose sight of that. Okay

49:41

it's probably time to stop rambling now isn't

49:44

it? I think so and

49:46

I think it's time for me to make that cup of tea

49:49

and sit down and just relax okay

49:52

and take the

49:54

rest of the evening off okay

49:56

but thanks so much for subscribing again

49:58

if you have if you have haven't subscribed you know what

50:01

to do and thanks for listening

50:03

50:13

for commenting and stuff like that it's

50:16

good it's great very happy

50:18

with a million people not

50:21

that not that all of them watch

50:23

every episode because

50:25

you get a million subscribers but yeah you don't

50:28

get a million views on every video it's

50:31

a funny it's a funny thing YouTube the

50:33

way it behaves but anyway

50:35

a million subscribers I am happy with

50:38

that that is great okay

50:41

right okay

50:43
