To adequately address the issue of Human Trafficking and help survivors, we must be able to identify and disrupt the business models of trafficking in our communities. So, we spent 18 months meeting with Human Trafficking survivors and experts. We also reviewed over 125 real cases and identified the traffickers' methods, victim abuses, and how public health and safety systems respond when interacting with each victim. Polaris, a nonprofit who manages the National HT hotline, further breaks down the broader categories of Sex and Labor trafficking into 25 predominant types. Breaking down the various business models of Human Trafficking helps us understand and expose the specific ways that traffickers leverage and exploit legitimate businesses or institutions - such as social services, financial institutions, hotels, transportation systems, immigration, healthcare providers, and other online platforms like social media. Each type varies greatly in the way victims are recruited and controlled and how the traffickers conceal their crime. Our episode today will focus on "Escort Services". Polaris frames the Escort Service business model for us in their 2017 report “The Business of Modern Slavery”. 'Escort Services is a broad term that refers to commercial sex acts that primarily occur at a temporary indoor location. The operations are often described as “out-call,” where traffickers deliver victims to a buyer’s hotel room or residence for “private parties,” or as “in-call,” where potential buyers cycle in and out of a hotel room where the trafficker confines victim for extended stays.' Based on this information and our research, we've created this "Escort Services" narrative. We've anonymized details to protect each victim's identity.
