Cobb Sheriff's Deputies Save Lives of Two Inmates

Two inmates at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center owe their lives to the quick thinking and action of Deputy David Morris and Sgt. Tyler Johnson. Both inmates attempted suicide on separate occasions but were saved by these deputies.

In the first instance, Deputy Morris noticed an inmate acting strangely and upon inspection found the inmate trying to hang himself with a bedsheet. Thanks to Morris' intervention, the inmate was rescued and is reportedly in good spirits.

In a separate incident, Sgt. Johnson encountered another inmate attempting suicide. The inmate was unresponsive when found, but was revived and has since expressed gratitude for Johnson's intervention.

The jail has mental health staff available 24/7 to provide support to inmates and deputies in crisis. In addition, the sheriff's office provides support systems for deputies who are dealing with the daily traumas of their job. Sheriff Craig Owens emphasizes that they have increased their peer support units and contract with an outside psychiatrist for traumatic events.

For inmates, Owens says there are resources like chaplains and counseling sessions to help them understand that a jail sentence is not the end and they can reintegrate into society.
