0:15
Neil Patel and Eric Sue.
0:19
All Right, guys, before we start, we got a special
0:21
message from our sponsor. If
0:24
you want to rank higher on Google, you gotta
0:26
look at your page speed time. The
0:28
faster website loads, the better off you
0:30
are with Google's Core Vital update.
0:33
That makes it super super important to optimize
0:35
your site for low time. And
0:37
one easy way to do it is use the host
0:40
that Eric and I use, dream Hosts. So
0:42
just go to dream host or google it,
0:44
find it, check it out, and it's a great way
0:47
to improve your low time. All
0:50
right, so today we
0:52
are going to talk about how to go beyond
0:55
being a tech marketer. So in the last
0:57
episode, I explained what an Internet marketer is.
0:59
Neil, do you want explain what a tech marketer is and then
1:01
we can kind of talk about how people can go beyond. So,
1:04
a tech marketer is someone
1:06
who's focusing on marketing
1:09
technology ex. Sas companies
1:12
or ex. Software or
1:14
anything like that. What I would
1:16
say is this, so I've actually Neil, correct
1:18
me if I mean Neil's actually had a couple of tech companies.
1:20
I've worked at a tech company before, so this is a long
1:22
time ago, multiple tech companies, and
1:25
so, you know, the beginning of my career was
1:27
I started out as an Internet market I tried a lot of different
1:29
things, and then eventually I started looking
1:31
gravitating more towards tech and I started you
1:33
know, all the fanfare you see around, you know,
1:35
this company raising this amount of money, this company raising
1:38
of this amount of money. The allure of Silicon
1:40
Valley was was just talking to amazing founders.
1:43
That was really interesting because I just wanted to learn and
1:45
talk about, you know, new ideas. And so
1:48
in the last episode, we talked about kind of what internet
1:50
marketers are really good at, which is historically
1:52
they're very good at acquisition, but not that good
1:54
at retention. And I'm generalizing here,
1:57
but when I think about technology marketers,
1:59
they're you know, pretty decent when it comes to acquisition,
2:01
but they are not well,
2:04
they're exceptional. Actually, they're very exceptional when
2:06
it comes to retention because as part of
2:08
a product organization, you're forced to continually
2:10
talk to customers, do customer development, ask the
2:13
right questions, and you're constantly making the product
2:15
better and better, and you're also making your marketing better and better.
2:17
Right. So you might have a product marketing team,
2:19
you might have a you know, demand generation team, and
2:21
then they work in tandem with the product marketing team. Right,
2:24
So you're part of something much bigger than yourself, and you're
2:26
part of trying to build an organization
2:28
where you guys can potentially reach a
2:30
billion in AR or onion recurring revenue.
2:32
I mean, just look at Salesforce that they reached that milestone,
2:35
right, And I think you know, other amazing companies like HubSpot,
2:37
you know, publicly traded. So I just
2:39
think, in my opinion, working in tech and also
2:41
you know, having software companies, I think it's
2:44
it forces you into a long term mindset.
2:47
And I think in terms of how can
2:49
go beyond being a tech marketer, Neil,
2:51
what are your thoughts about how people can actually level
2:53
up? The best way is to
2:56
learn technology as well. Right.
2:58
So it's like most people in
3:00
tech marketing, they're like, yeah, let me go figure out how to
3:02
market a product and technology.
3:06
There's something that you know Sean Ellis Coin
3:08
years and years ago called growth hacking. There's
3:10
multiple ways to grow, from product
3:13
to sales, to design to onboarding.
3:16
And as a marketer, you shouldn't just
3:18
focus on Hey, I'm going to go drive
3:20
traffic. You should also learn how to optimize
3:23
the funnel. You should also learn how to
3:25
create viracual loops for referral
3:28
systems. You should also figure out how
3:30
to improve the user onboarding so that way you can
3:32
optimize the lifetime value. When you start
3:34
doing things like that, you're much more valuable
3:36
to the company and you can get paid much
3:38
more than just being a quote unquote marketer.
3:41
Yeah. I remember I did an episode on YouTube
3:43
before, so I talked about the kind of the difference is
3:45
how do you become a six figure marketer, seven figure
3:47
marketer, and an eight figure marketer. So I think if
3:49
you want to go beyond kind of the internet marketing world
3:51
and the tech marketing world, I think it's you
3:53
start studying you know, entrepreneurs, you start studying
3:55
investors, right, I think that's the next level up, and it
3:57
forces you to change your mindset.
4:00
And you know, when you change your mindset, then everything
4:02
else carries downward. Right, you start to think about,
4:04
okay, what stuff should I be reading? Should I be reading
4:06
more stuff about investing? How about more stuff on
4:08
philosophy? Right? And by the
4:10
way, what did all these investors and entrepreneurs
4:12
do. Oh, they actually hang out with other smart people or
4:14
people that are much smarter than them, so they
4:16
can level up. Right. So, whether it's you
4:18
know, joining different peer groups during dinners and
4:20
things like that. I remember when I was about twenty six
4:22
twenty seven, I had started to do peer
4:25
groups at my place with other marketers,
4:28
and these were marketing leaders. I would pay for dinner
4:30
and we kind of do hot seats. People talk about what's
4:32
working, what's not working, and then one person we kind of help
4:34
them dissect a big problem that they're facing,
4:37
and you know, eventually a couple of years later, you know,
4:39
level up into joining different entrepreneur
4:41
peer groups or different marketing peer groups. Right. So as
4:43
an example, Neil and I we have a group called the Growth
4:45
Accelerator. I think if you just go to market school
4:47
to io you'll learn more about it. But Neil
4:50
and I we just want to learn from amazing people. Get a
4:52
good group of seven to nine figure entrepreneurs together
4:54
and get good speakers together, right, and so
4:56
that's what's really going to help I think people
4:59
go beyond just kind of the the world of marketing. I just kind
5:01
of think bigger again. It's all about reframing.
5:03
It's all about mindset, I think at the end of the day, and I
5:05
didn't understand that before when people said, you
5:08
know, everything's about mindset, but you know, get a
5:10
lot more experience and you realize, oh, that makes a lot of
5:12
sense. Neil, We really appreciate
5:14
it. If you rate and review this podcast,
