0:03
podcast that provides daily top level
0:05
marketing tips and strategies from entrepreneurs
0:08
that practice what they preach and live
0:10
what they teach. Let's start leveling
0:12
up your marketing knowledge with your instructors,
0:15
Neil Patel and Eric Sue.
0:19
All right, guys, before we start, we got a special
0:21
message from our sponsor. If
0:24
you want to rank higher on Google, you got
0:26
to look at your page speed time. The
0:28
faster website loads, the better off you
0:30
are with Google's Core Vital update.
0:33
That makes it super super important to optimize
0:35
your site for low time. And
0:37
one easy way to do it is use the host
0:40
that Eric and I use, dream Hosts. So
0:42
just go to dream host or Google it,
0:44
find it, check it out, and it's a great way
0:47
to improve your low time. Welcome
0:51
to another episode of Marketing
0:53
School. I'm Eric Sue and I'm Neil
0:55
Platel and today we are going to talk about
0:57
the twenty twenty way to hire marketers.
1:00
So let's do a quick refresh, guys. So
1:02
twenty twenty right now, we're still
1:04
trying to get through the craziness, you
1:06
know, the fire tornadoes that are going on. I think this week
1:08
they're over forty fires in LA
1:10
at least, and so we have the pandemic
1:13
a lot going on, right So the twenty twenty
1:15
way to hire marketers, Neil, what are your
1:17
thoughts around this? The easiest
1:19
way right now, because there's so many marketers out
1:21
there. I would just test people out as contractors
1:24
and see who works, and then from there double
1:26
down on the people that are working. A
1:28
lot of people make it really complicated. They go all
1:30
through all these job postings and interviews
1:32
and all this kind of stuff. I'm like, right now,
1:35
in this current economy, there's so many
1:37
people that are looking for jobs, especially in
1:39
marketing, that I would just keep it really
1:41
simple and do something where you just create
1:43
projects, test people out on it, and if it works out
1:45
well great, do more with them. If it doesn't,
1:48
then move on to the next candidate, and then you
1:50
can decide if you want to hire some of those people full
1:52
time. Yeah. I think by far
1:55
the number one thing Neil and I get asked a
1:57
lot, probably the most. Okay, I just said
1:59
the number one thing. So the number one thing we get asked for, at
2:02
least on my side, is Eric,
2:04
do you know someone that can help with demand gen? Eric?
2:06
Do you know somebody that can be a VP of marketing. That's
2:09
the number one thing I get asked for, and until
2:11
recently there wasn't a best answer.
2:13
I would say, go to LinkedIn or hire a recruiter
2:16
to help you for these more senior people, people
2:18
that have the experience. Now there's
2:20
a tool that just popped up or a website
2:22
called marketer hire that you just started working
2:24
with us, and you know, in terms
2:26
of reaching out saying hey, like we have these
2:29
tech marketers, we have these really senior marketers
2:31
that have really good jobs right now, but they're also
2:33
doing stuff on the side and they're willing. They might be a
2:35
little more expensive, but these people have grown big traffic
2:37
websites or big email us and all that. So you
2:39
can literally just go to marketing school
2:41
dot io slash higher that's h I r
2:44
E. And then you can learn more about
2:46
marketer hire. That's one thing. The other thing I would
2:48
say is you can go to support
2:51
Shepherd, so that's s h E
2:53
P h E r D Supportshepherd
2:56
dot com. You can hire if it's a
2:58
more lower level type of thing, and you can with
3:00
the VA they actually help you find a top three
3:02
percent of vas in the Philippines.
3:04
And I know you might be cringing a little bit. For those
3:06
of you that have worked with vas in Philippines,
3:09
these are actually vetted and they're they're very
3:11
good, so the quality is very high. That's one
3:13
thing we've mentioned sites like upwork in the
3:15
past as well, So upwork is
3:17
good and then good old fashioned just
3:20
sometimes what you can do on LinkedIn is
3:22
and I got this from you know, our mutual friend you neve. You
3:25
just post on LinkedIn and say, hey,
3:27
who's the best SEO? And then maybe you might
3:29
tag a couple you know, tag them in here, that's what you might say. And
3:31
then you might tag a couple of your friends that you know,
3:33
and then they'll just start tagging. And what happens is because
3:35
everyone's commenting and people are liking it, it gets
3:37
bigger and bigger, it gets more and more reach, right, And
3:39
that's actually worked out pretty well in the past.
3:42
And obviously, you know, if you have an audience, you have
3:44
your emails, you have Instagram, whatever it is, exactly,
3:46
hit them up and just say, hey, look, you know I'm looking to hire.
3:48
Tell them go over here. Keep utilizing
3:51
what you have. Yeah, And like
3:53
I said, I don't really have much for my end. I've always
3:55
one of the model you hire
3:57
people early on, you test them out, and if
3:59
it works great Because I've been through tons
4:01
of resumes. A lot of people can talk to talk. Everyone
4:04
has certifications these days. But
4:06
I want to see people in action on my business
4:09
growing it. If I want to hire them full
4:11
time. I want to see what they can do and have
4:13
them break down things that need to be fixed, change
4:15
and then go from there. The proof is in the putting.
4:17
It's not that hard for people to give you feedback
4:19
and ideas. If they can't do that at first, then
4:22
they're probably not the right fit. Yeah, And what Neil's
4:24
really touching upon is it's the test
4:26
project. It's the test assignment because that's where the
4:28
rubber meets the road. And I would recommend
4:30
googling a search for base Camp
4:33
test project. You should be able to find they
4:35
literally have a process for how they
4:37
run their test assignments. I believe this is more in
4:39
the context of hiring a developer, but you
4:41
know, basically they'll get on you with's,
4:43
get on a call with you in Skype. Maybe they'll
4:46
type a couple of things and they'll say, okay, here's a test assignment.
4:48
We're actually going to pay you for that test assignment. I
4:50
prefer if it's more than a couple hours or
4:52
so, I prefer to pay for them because I just don't
4:54
like the idea of people doing free work.
4:56
So keep that in mind and see how it goes,
4:58
because you're to learn a lot point. How
5:01
well do they communicate? Are they fast? Do they hit
5:03
deadlines? Do they work well in a team environment?
5:05
These are all things that what I like doing,
5:08
especially if you do a week type of thing. If you're
5:10
fortunate enough to get them for a week and pay them for a week,
5:12
you're going to see everything. Are they a culture fit? All
5:15
those little nuances. You might be able to fake
5:17
it for a day or two of work, but you have them for seven
5:19
days, everything will come out. There's nothing
5:21
that they can hide. So that is it
5:23
for today. Once again, you can go to marketing school
5:25
do io slash hired that's Hiri
5:28
to learn about market or hire there. Or you
5:30
