Welcome to Marketing School, the only
0:03
podcast that provides daily top level
0:05
marketing tips and strategies from entrepreneurs
0:08
that practice what they preach and live
0:10
what they teach. Let's start leveling
0:12
up your marketing knowledge with your instructors,
0:15
Neil Patel and Eric Sue. All
0:19
Right, guys, before we start, we got a special message
0:22
from our sponsor. If
0:24
you want to rank higher on Google, you gotta
0:26
look at your page speed time. The
0:28
faster website loads, the better off you
0:30
are with Google's Core Vital update.
0:33
That makes it super super important to optimize
0:35
your site for low time. And
0:37
one easy way to do it is use the host
0:40
that Eric and I use, dream Hosts.
0:42
So just go to dream host or google
0:44
it, find it, check it out, and it's a
0:46
great way to improve your load time.
0:50
All right, so today we're going to talk about the paradox
0:52
of experts versus beginner
0:55
content. So this was a post written by Rand
0:57
Fishkin of spark Toro. So
0:59
if you really just type in paradox
1:01
of content marketing to beginners versus experts,
1:04
you will find a great blog post
1:06
from Rand And basically
1:08
the whole idea is this, when you are writing
1:11
beginner content, it tends to get
1:13
a lot of traffic, right. So if you write like
1:15
what is marketing? What is digital
1:17
marketing, that's going to drive a lot of top of funnel
1:19
traffic, but it typically doesn't get the
1:21
links right, or you typically don't get a lot of reshares
1:23
because experts typically aren't sharing that type of stuff.
1:26
Now, expert type of content might be well
1:29
researched guides or you know, very
1:31
specific data that you have. So it could be Neil
1:34
pulling from his uber suggest data and revealing
1:36
a lot of kind of trends around SEU that he's seeing,
1:38
maybe numbers around click through rates and things like
1:40
that, right, or maybe he can talk about if he's open
1:42
to it, talk about, you know, a monthly recurring revenue
1:45
numbers, churn numbers and things like that which
1:47
typically most people won't reveal. So
1:49
the paradox here is that what
1:51
content should you be creating? Should it be expert
1:54
level or should it be kind of beginner level,
1:56
right, because there's different levels of amplification that
1:58
you're going to get. So I thought that to be
2:00
fairly. I think it's an interesting thing and Neil and I
2:02
can kind of react to this. So Neil what
2:04
are your general thoughts around this? So, what I
2:07
found is when you create expert content, you're more
2:09
likely to get the social shares and the back links,
2:11
but the expert content tends not to rank as well
2:13
on Google. The beginner content
2:15
doesn't get as many back links, it doesn't get as many social
2:18
shares, but you get way more search traffic.
2:20
So what we found is you actually
2:22
need a creation of both. You need
2:25
the expert content to build the authority, to
2:27
build the back links, to get the social shares, to
2:29
build the email lists in the audience, and then you
2:31
need the beginner content to gobble up the search
2:33
traffic. We've actually found it very difficult
2:35
to create content that appeals to both experts
2:38
and beginners that gets back links, social
2:40
shares, and ranks well on Google. You
2:43
tend to either get back links and social shares, which
2:45
are one bucket, or search
2:47
traffic. Right, It's very rare
2:49
that you get all three in
2:51
one. Yeah, So I'm
2:53
actually looking at the blog post right now. He actually has
2:56
there's a chart with for different quadrants,
2:58
and basically if I'm
3:01
looking at this right now, it's kind of a mix
3:03
right to Neil's point. But again,
3:07
if I want to have something that is
3:09
going to have wide appeal and maybe sits
3:11
kind of in the middle of kind of beginner versus
3:13
advanced. I might be considering industry
3:16
news. Right, So if we think about marketing
3:18
Land, or we think if we think about search engine Land, those
3:20
sites get a lot of traffic and they actually
3:22
have a lot of links because they're hitting on trending topics
3:24
right, and trending topics tend to get links
3:26
that they tend to get social shares because people want to look smart
3:29
or people want to just link to kind of the first reference being
3:31
spoken about, and what happens is the rich
3:33
get richer. Right for search engine Land, their
3:36
domain authority is very strong, so whatever
3:38
they tend to publish around news, they're going to do well.
3:40
I would argue that, you know, Neil has pretty strong domain
3:42
authority. Same thing with the Single Grain blog. We
3:44
have strong domain authorities. So if we were to go down
3:46
the news route, we would actually do pretty
3:49
well. Now the discal research
3:51
I just mentioned that a little earlier. It tends to take
3:53
a lot of time, but much more people are willing to
3:55
share it because if you're sharing it with people
3:57
that are influencers. Let's say, in the marketing world,
4:00
they're much more likely to share something because again
4:02
they want to look good, they want to look smart. Right, More
4:04
specialized experiment results. Right. So I think
4:06
this was interesting. There's a lot more to explore within
4:08
here, and you got to think
4:10
about what works for you, right. Also consider your
4:13
writing style and consider who you're hiring, and
4:15
then you can think about what mix is most
4:17
ideal. Because even though Neil saying mix it up,
4:20
your knowledge may vary, right, Every single business is
4:22
different. So that's it. If
