  1. The bargaining stage of grief is a stage in which you may try to negotiate with yourself or find yourself asking God to try to undo the loss.
  • What are you negotiating so it will all stop?
    • Offering to be a better person, 
    • Offering to help others, or
    • To make donations as a way of dealing with and managing the pain of the loss. 
    • Negotiating with fate, a higher power, God, 
    • Wishing for miracles to negate the loss
    • negotiate with themselves, 
    • people around them, or 
    • with a higher power to postpone or 
    • undo the inevitable and/or lessen intense emotions
    • We want to believe that if we act in particular ways we will feel better.
  • It's sometimes hard to accept that there's nothing we can do to change things.
    • Anguish
    • Shame and guilt (i.e., survivor’s guilt)
    • Self-loathing
    • Anger
    • Resentment
    • Feeling betrayed by a higher power
    • Desperation for the pain to go away
    • Insecurity
    • bargaining stage of the grief process, the divorcing spouse still believes, at some level, that reconciliation is possible.

Scriptures:


  • Psalm 41:3-4 The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.I said, “Have mercy on me, Lord; heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
  • Mark 6:54-56 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
  • Matthew 9:6-8 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up and went home! Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for giving humans such authority.
  • Jeremiah 17:14 Lord, heal me and I will be completely well; rescue me and I will be perfectly safe. You are the one I praise!
  • Psalm 30:2-3 Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit.
