1:06

we're Erin and Jennifer Smith, your hosts of

1:08

the Marriage After God podcast. And lately we've

1:10

been in a series talking about words, and

1:12

in this episode today, we thought it would

1:14

be fun to dive into two different Bible

1:16

stories that show and reveal the power of

1:19

words. Hey, welcome back to our show.

1:21

We just want to invite you, if you haven't already done

1:40

best way to get the word out. So

1:43

we appreciate it. Yeah, we're glad you're here. And we got a

1:45

pretty decent episode of hope for you. So

1:49

Erin, yeah, I last week,

1:51

I just wanted to bring up. I

1:53

was pretty sick, not like horribly sick.

1:56

I was actually thanking God because I

1:58

feel like all last year. I feel like

2:00

we didn't get sick at all at least I didn't and

2:03

so I'm I'm pretty happy that It's

2:05

only been this one little thing. I had like this head

2:07

cold and like a headache for a week I'm a reason

2:09

my face hurts. I'm finally feeling

2:11

better. You might hear it a little bit

2:13

in my throat. So Bear

2:16

with me, but I'm feeling a lot better. That's good

2:18

when I read your note there that it says I've been

2:20

sick I was like, oh he wants me to talk about how

2:22

I've been feeling lately. Oh, we should talk about I've

2:26

also been sick but not the same kind of sick.

2:29

Yeah, what's been going on? Are you right? Yeah, I

2:31

am I'm great All healthy

2:33

signs. I we found out that

2:35

we are expecting again Here

2:39

comes baby number six And

2:42

so I've just been feeling real Like

2:45

not you've been right out of

2:47

all the pregnancies I think it was the

2:50

worst of it and lasted the longest

2:52

But this one has not felt great

2:56

You've had a pretty consistent like morning sickness

2:58

not just in the morning. Yeah It's not like

3:00

a certain part of the day which with a lot

3:02

of my other pregnancies It was like, you know from 3

3:04

p.m. On you know, but I was able to get

3:06

sleep and stuff And this one has just been really restless not

3:09

sure why but so now you

3:11

all know the secrets out secret That baby number

3:13

six on the way for the podcast listeners. We

3:15

probably won't post it right away to social media

3:18

But maybe we will I don't know. Yeah They're

3:21

gonna know you guys get to hear you get to hear first

3:24

Yeah, we got baby number six. We're very excited.

3:26

We don't know the gender yet. We have no

3:28

names picked out yet But so early on oh

3:30

man, our kids are so excited because they've been

3:32

praying for like a year Yeah, I feel like

3:34

years probably years. Yeah, they bring it up very

3:37

very intentionally this last year They've been desiring

3:40

it and they talk about it a lot

3:42

and they asked when when we can Yeah,

3:48

some of them understand how it works the others

3:50

don't but We're really excited. It

3:52

feels a little strange just because all the others

3:54

I felt like we're so close together And

3:58

and so it's been a four-year gap Edith

4:00

is going to be turning four soon. And

4:02

so it's just wild to think about

4:04

us going back to having a baby. And

4:07

she's pretty excited Edith about being a big sister.

4:10

Yeah, it's going to be huge, but I'm

4:12

excited because we have a lot of older

4:14

kids now. So we have so much helpful

4:16

hands with a new baby. Even in taking care

4:18

of me lately, they've been so compassionate and just

4:20

like, mom, can I get you water? Mom, can

4:22

I, you know, whatever they can do for me.

4:24

I get these little love notes tied to the

4:26

water. It's really fun. Yeah, Olive's

4:29

been such a sweetheart. I

4:31

love her. Yeah. She's a

4:33

very thoughtful human. Yeah.

4:36

Like just notes and letters. She brought me a snack.

4:40

I was laying in bed. I took a nap

4:42

and she had left on my end table two

4:45

paper plates that were left over from some party.

4:47

It had like butterflies and flowers on it, but

4:49

they were pinched together with paper clips. And it

4:51

said on the front, I love you. And so

4:53

I opened it up and there was all these

4:55

like little cutout cards. And each one said something

4:57

different. You're the best mom in the

4:59

world. I love you so much. I can't wait to

5:02

see the baby. I'm so glad you're pregnant. And it

5:04

was just all these little stuffed cards in these two

5:06

paper plates. And I thought, she's so funny. The

5:08

other night I look over next to my

5:10

bed and there's this huge eight and a half by 11

5:12

green card that's like stapled together. So there's like stuff inside

5:14

of it. I open it up, huge

5:16

long letter just telling her telling me how much

5:18

she loves me. And like little shapes

5:21

cut out of fabric. And

5:23

like, she's always doing really cute stuff

5:25

like that. Which by the

5:27

way is that you were encouraged, inspired

5:29

by her like- A little while ago, yeah. We should

5:31

do a letter like that for her. And like we

5:34

did when I stepped it under her pillow. So

5:36

when she woke up, she saw it. She loves it.

5:38

She's definitely a words of affirmation person. Reminds me of you

5:40

in that way. And she just goes out of her

5:42

way to do it. I love that. And

5:44

you keep like encouraging that. So

5:48

that's kind of what's been going on in

5:50

my downtime. I have been studying

5:52

Esther, which has been a delight. I

5:55

feel like I hadn't read that book in a

5:57

while, but the ladies in our fellowship and our

5:59

church. had come together and said,

6:01

okay, what do we want this next phase of ladies night

6:03

to look like because we meet every other week and so

6:07

we spent some time praying about it and thinking about what

6:09

it would look like and we had just gotten done with

6:11

a study and We decided

6:13

Esther so for the next I

6:16

think it's like I've been enjoying listening to learn

6:18

about it because you're listening to like these These

6:20

different YouTube videos I

6:23

look up YouTube. I've got two commentaries

6:25

from from Amazon and I've just

6:27

kind of been digging in and it's been nice and

6:29

having the downtime because you've been letting me rest in

6:31

the evenings and stuff and sometimes all

6:33

day So

6:37

using that time to kind of flow down and be with the

6:39

Lord too has been really efficient and

6:41

nice I think it's

6:44

gonna be a good study with all the stuff you've

6:46

been I've been hearing. Yeah So if you're listening

6:48

to this and you have also been digging into Esther

6:50

or have in the past and have any Little

6:52

gems and treasures that you found via me unenveiled

6:55

wife on Instagram because I'd love to be able

6:57

to share them with the ladies group Awesome.

7:00

Okay, so we're talking about words still you

7:02

have a few more episodes of this But

7:04

this episode we wanted to dig into a

7:06

few stories in the Bible and in reality

7:09

If you've read the Bible for any amount of time the

7:11

majority of the Bible first of all It's the

7:13

Word of God like this is we believe as

7:15

as Christians who have our faith in Jesus

7:18

Christ that the Bible is The

7:20

inspired Word of God this is like

7:22

it's him and so we it's

7:24

about words and in every story When

7:27

you break it down to what's going on? It's

7:29

about man listening to God God says something

7:32

and it's either they do to they don't

7:34

do it And that's kind of the prevailing

7:36

story throughout all of Scripture and I

7:38

love how powerful Scripture is in that it

7:40

actually does transform the way that we think

7:42

and during family Bible time today the

7:45

kids were reciting Some

7:48

verses that they have been learning and remember to all

7:50

of them I know this part and but it's

7:52

it's so great because we got to encourage them

7:54

that when they memorize scripture that they're They're

7:57

writing it on their hearts. Like that's what that phrase

7:59

means and having it as a

8:01

part of them and what they believe and what they know to

8:03

be true. And how when

8:06

we know God's word, it does

8:08

change us. And I was talking to specifically

8:10

one of the kids about how when they

8:12

struggle with something like, being kind

8:14

to a sibling, they're

8:16

gonna have opportunity where they're gonna hear Colossians

8:18

3.12, and they're

8:20

gonna remember what it means to clothe

8:22

yourself with compassion and kindness and gentleness.

8:25

And that's how God's word transforms us because

8:27

the Holy Spirit brings it to remembrance. He

8:30

brings it up and then

8:32

we get to choose in how to walk, you know,

8:34

we're gonna walk God's way or we're gonna walk in

8:37

the flesh. Also

8:39

just a little plug, be doing family Bible time with

8:41

your kids because they need to know this stuff. I

8:44

felt really, really emboldened

8:47

this morning. I was listening to a podcast I

8:49

was telling you about by Jordan Pearson and he's

8:51

interviewing this author of a book about how

8:54

therapy and certain things are just affecting

8:56

culture right now. But

8:58

all I kept hearing was there's a

9:00

message being like

9:03

pushed on everyone, especially the

9:05

children. And I was like, I need

9:07

to make sure that my kids know the right message. I

9:09

need to make sure that they're hearing over and over and over

9:11

again, God's message, God's word,

9:14

and that it's there so that they

9:16

can combat when at whatever point when

9:18

the world, when they're in the world, they'll

9:20

be able to have that foundation. And they just, that's

9:23

what this series has been about. The

9:25

words we hear, the words we speak, the words we

9:27

receive, the words we believe, and

9:30

the world has their words and the enemy has his words

9:32

and God has his, and we

9:34

need to be putting our minds on his word and so we're

9:36

gonna be on his word today. I

9:38

love this link you put in here. There's

9:40

a website called bibles stories.org and

9:42

I clicked on it and it's literally just linked

9:45

from Genesis all the way to Revelation of

9:48

all these main stories in the Bible. And it titles them

9:50

and I was like, this is cool. This is a very

9:52

simplified way of digging

9:54

through scripture specifically for stories. It was funny

9:56

when I was doing some research for today's

9:59

episode. kept typing things in like

10:01

the power of words revealed through a story in

10:03

the Bible or Bible stories that show the power

10:06

of words. And it wasn't like

10:08

giving me what I wanted. And I'm

10:10

I was very, I don't want to be disappointed.

10:12

But yeah, I was like, how do I find

10:14

what it is that I'm looking for? Maybe I

10:16

just wasn't clear in understanding what I was looking

10:18

for for you guys. But

10:22

to say the least, I did find this website and it

10:24

was cool just to be able to trickle through all the

10:26

stories, stories, and bullet form. I think

10:28

the point is, because I was doing the same thing, and I was

10:30

realizing the majority, like I said,

10:32

the majority of the Bible is these, it's

10:34

stories of words being

10:36

believed and heard, and back and forth,

10:39

and God speaking, and the people listening

10:41

or not listening. And so

10:43

it's not that there's maybe one specific story that's like,

10:45

Oh, that shows it perfectly. It's like

10:47

this, it's the story of the Bible. Yeah, like

10:49

his word or the world's word. I think I

10:52

think I think I was looking for, like

10:54

words that are really sticky, like words that

10:56

we even still look at today

10:58

or hold fast to today, which I

11:00

think that we'll see in the second story, what

11:03

I meant when I was looking

11:06

for something specific. It's kind of

11:08

like when you are, we

11:10

had talked about this in another episode, but when you're

11:12

watching a movie, and there's just that one line in

11:14

there that you walk away from and you memorize it

11:16

because it is sticky. Like I was looking for something

11:18

like that. I think one of them

11:20

would be like John 3 16, one of the most famous verses

11:22

in the Bible. Elliot was trying to recite

11:24

it this morning. And I told him, I

11:26

said, Elliot, it used to be like

11:29

our generation and maybe the generations before the

11:32

majority of people could recite

11:34

that verse, even if they're

11:36

not really strong believers. And

11:39

the sad thing is, is now the current

11:41

generations of young adults and

11:43

teens, there's a lack, they probably

11:46

don't even know what it is. They've never heard that verse.

11:48

So there's, it's amazing how certain

11:51

verses, and ideas can

11:54

shape a worldview. And then that gets

11:56

lost. It's gone. So parents, you need

11:58

to be teaching your kids. these

12:00

things, you may know them, but they don't. Make

12:03

it a part of your life. Okay, so

12:05

the first story we're gonna be talking about,

12:07

this is a pretty awesome story and I don't

12:09

know if you've read this before, if you haven't, please

12:11

go to Second Kings and

12:14

read about this, this

12:16

story of King Hezekiah. And it's in Second

12:21

Kings in chapter 18, and this

12:24

is a story of King Hezekiah early

12:26

on in his kingship and his ruling

12:29

in Judah. And he was

12:32

aged 25 when he became king, which is

12:34

pretty awesome to think about that he was so young,

12:36

but there was even younger kings I realized in

12:39

Israel's history. But he was aged 25 and it says

12:42

in the Bible that he loved the Lord

12:44

and kept all his laws and statutes. And

12:47

so it starts off King Hezekiah's story this

12:49

way, and actually throughout Kings, First and Second

12:52

Kings, many of the stories of the king start

12:54

off this way. Either they

12:57

obeyed the Lord or they did not

12:59

follow their father's way and

13:01

they turned. And so you have this

13:04

idea of, it always starts off of,

13:06

does this king love the Lord

13:08

or not? This one

13:10

did. King Hezekiah loved the Lord and kept

13:12

all his laws and statutes. And

13:15

then all of a sudden in the 14th year

13:17

of his rule, the king of Assyria,

13:22

another country, another ruling

13:24

people, comes to

13:27

attack Judah. This kingdom was already

13:29

attacking Israel, already took away people to

13:31

Babylon from Israel and had

13:33

been taking out Egypt and all these other

13:35

places. The king of Assyria was doing this,

13:38

just destroying all these other nations, winning every

13:40

left and right. It's pretty bleak,

13:43

pretty scary. You're a king, a

13:45

new king, you're like, oh wait, I

13:48

see everything happening around here. And so

13:51

I'm just setting up the story for us and I'm going to read the scriptures.

13:54

And then the king of Assyria sends a

13:57

great army with some messengers to Judah.

14:00

Because Hezekiah

14:03

rebels against the king, he's not going to

14:05

serve the king of Assyria. And so he

14:08

sends a great army with hopes that they

14:10

would capture Judah and that they

14:12

would take down the nation. So he

14:15

sends this great army, that's what the Bible says. So

14:18

that puts us in 2 Kings chapter 18

14:20

starting in verse 19. I'm going to read this and then

14:22

we can talk about it. It

14:25

says, in the Reb Shekah, that

14:27

word by the way means like servant to

14:29

the prince or servant to the king, it's

14:32

like a messenger. So, and

14:34

the Reb Shekah said to them, Say

14:36

to Hezekiah, thus says the great king, the

14:38

king of Assyria, on what

14:40

do you rest this trust of yours? Do

14:43

you think that mere words are strategy and

14:45

power for war? In whom

14:47

do you know, now trust, that you

14:49

have rebelled against me? Behold, you are

14:51

trusting now in Egypt, that broken reed of

14:53

a staff, which will pierce the hand of

14:55

any man who leans on it. Such

14:58

is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all who trusted

15:00

him. But if you say to me,

15:02

we trust in the Lord our God, is

15:04

it not he whose high places

15:07

and altars Hezekiah's remove, saying to

15:09

Judah and to Jerusalem, you shall

15:11

worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

15:14

Come now, make a wager with my master, the

15:16

king of Assyria, I will give you two thousand

15:19

horses, if you are able on your part to

15:21

set riders on them. How

15:23

then can you repulse a single captain among

15:25

the least of my master's servants, when

15:27

you trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? Moreover,

15:30

it is without the

15:32

Lord that I have come up against this place

15:34

to destroy it. The Lord said to

15:36

me, go up against the land, this

15:39

land and destroy it. This

15:41

is a, there's a lot here. But

15:44

what is essentially happening is this messenger,

15:46

this Reb Shekah, not

15:49

just taunting the king, but he's trying

15:51

to put doubt, he's trying to tear

15:53

down whatever hope he has and whatever

15:55

he's holding on to, so that he

15:57

would give up. That's what's

15:59

happening. and that's that

16:01

would that is mean shreds even though

16:03

he is as great army. He.

16:06

Comes up against a judah with words

16:08

and even think it's so funny. That.

16:11

Even states he's like what do you

16:13

think he knows what words or a

16:15

strategy for war and this is exactly

16:17

what he's doing is using words as

16:19

a strategy for war. And

16:22

so the question is is am and and and the

16:24

main theme is is like a Use If you're going

16:26

to say that you're putting your trust and lord. Isn't.

16:29

You. Know the King, the one that told you to tear down

16:31

all these other alters. And. Earlier on

16:33

in in second kings when the fun of

16:35

the first things has a guy did when

16:38

he became king was he went around he

16:40

tore down on the high places on the

16:42

altar is ah the idols any premises I

16:44

know organ or support his family were gonna

16:46

get rid of all of the stuff and

16:48

so now this messengers using these words to

16:50

discourage the people of Judah. And

16:52

I just it makes me think how often are

16:54

we attacked in the same way, How did you

16:56

feel that the enemy can use as how you're

16:58

going to trust in the lord Like what has

17:00

he done for your hear what have you done

17:02

for your we are you gonna be in a

17:04

walk and that's the ever feel that way. Said.

17:07

In your own life. Yes, definitely an

17:09

idyllic. It comes in little increments. It's

17:11

not like everything all at once then.

17:14

definitely like points to different areas of

17:16

my life where I think I'm struggling.

17:18

I say like I'm insecure and I

17:21

doubt you know my my own abilities.

17:24

And you do hear those little. That.

17:26

Questionings you. Know like baby weight when

17:28

it comes to like prayer like oh, you're

17:30

going to like what's prayer going to do

17:32

You You been bring had enough, I did

17:35

nothing and an enemy like tried to come

17:37

in. And. Not.

17:39

Just attack us Had on. He. Tried

17:41

these are the use words to convince us

17:43

out of. Defending herself out

17:45

of attacking her out of like this

17:47

is what is this is the strategy

17:49

of war that thread. Has it raining that

17:51

he even says like you said. i go

17:54

you're not using his wordsworth for a

17:56

saturday as that that that it's is

17:58

exactly how he attacks And

18:01

there's been many times in my life that

18:03

like I was just bringing up in the last episode how

18:05

I've had This feeling

18:07

of like just wanting to give up like this

18:09

is too hard just continuing on in our work

18:12

and our like Doing family Bible time

18:14

every day and being consistent in that and and

18:16

like these feelings of like I'm a failure And

18:19

I feel like that and the enemy is like

18:21

yeah, why don't you give up? Yeah, it's not

18:23

working He affirms all this up. Yeah, and and

18:25

and the Holy Spirit's like no, no,

18:27

just take the next right step Rely on

18:29

me don't rely on your flesh. I do

18:32

like Up here

18:34

where the way that it's phrased I

18:37

think it I don't know verse 18 on

18:39

what do you may have 19 on? What

18:42

do you rest this trust of yours? I

18:44

don't know why the way that it's worded is like when you

18:46

think of trust it seems like a like

18:50

just a concept of like Mm-hmm

18:53

what you believe. Yeah, what are you

18:55

trusting in but this sounds physical? What do

18:57

you rest your trust on? Well, it's

18:59

also it's almost sounds like I you

19:03

have this your trust like this is how

19:05

much trust I have You know, I'm if you're

19:07

listening and making this like bowl shape and

19:09

might with my hands Yeah, and I'm gonna

19:11

place my trust over here and I'm

19:13

gonna leave it with You

19:16

you name it, what are you leaving it with your bank

19:18

account your you know, your your education

19:20

your strength Your health or you

19:23

leaving with God? He's

19:25

like on what do you rest this trust

19:27

of yours? He's like, you know this trust

19:29

that makes you so bold Yeah, deny to

19:31

rebel against us. What is it? If

19:34

you say it's Egypt you're gonna fail because

19:36

we just took out Egypt Yeah, and the Pharaoh's you're

19:38

that's what it talks about He's like you're gonna rest

19:40

your hand on staff and it's gonna snap and stab

19:42

your hand He's like, but if it's the

19:44

Lord you're resting it on which the Reb Shekha knows

19:46

it is He's resting it in

19:48

the Lord And I I

19:50

love that I Don't love

19:53

it. I just think it's so interesting though. Even the Reb Shekha He

19:56

mentions how Hezekiah did

19:59

the right thing. Before the lord in

20:01

uses it as a tool he says

20:03

oh that seen that you believe was

20:05

right turn down if one's idols turned

20:07

on everyone's high places you've You've essentially

20:09

told everyone here like only service one.and

20:11

is juice believe that one got is

20:13

actually the take care of you you

20:15

did the wrong thing. That's another thing

20:17

I feel like we as believers get

20:19

attacked on. says. Don't.

20:22

Do that right thing because that can hurt you. You

20:25

you go and and teach your kids about

20:28

the bible or you're gonna, you're gonna be.

20:30

you know. You name what the

20:32

world's wants to call you for doing that. Yeah.

20:35

Oh, you're going to go pray for this person

20:37

or you're going to go sacrifice over here. You're

20:39

gonna go lay down yourself like this of youths

20:41

few let yourself down for your spouse. Oh

20:44

you, They're just stop. All of you. Don't do the

20:46

right thing, Don't you? The thing that God wants you

20:48

to do? I got com needed. How

20:50

how for the the listening? Like how

20:52

do you navigate when you are trying

20:54

to do the right thing. You are

20:56

trying to put your testing alerts and

20:58

you Do hear those voices whether their

21:01

closest to you other believers or you

21:03

know the world voices that. Like

21:05

how how do you and.

21:08

Stand. Song. Or any

21:10

confidence. This. Is what we're gonna

21:12

get into the minute of What as a Kite

21:15

as. But. That's that's the

21:17

reality is because we're going to believe something. As

21:19

as for healing here it right. Let me relieve

21:21

your alley lot of that. The truth that tells

21:24

us abuse or noise and the world to me

21:26

knows if you do that you're going to lose

21:28

this you were going to use where you're going

21:30

to. So this way if you look at has

21:32

occurred he did the right thing. And.

21:35

The army's coming from anywhere you because you

21:37

might say like well why is the army

21:39

come against him if he's done so well

21:41

he loves does he did the right thing

21:43

and he tore down the idols and he

21:45

turned his nation towards certain got only. Then.

21:48

Why is this army even hear? Why? is

21:50

he's. Being. Forced. says.

21:52

we we to the think this was believers we talked

21:54

about this on sundays like we tend to look at

21:57

like i did all the right things why isn't got

21:59

blessing me them Why isn't God taking away

22:01

this pain? Why isn't God taking away this suffering?

22:03

Why isn't God like protecting me in this way,

22:05

the way we think we think he

22:08

should be doing it? And then the enemy uses that and says,

22:10

see, your God's not

22:12

helping you. That's what this Reb

22:14

Shekha just said. He said, I'm actually here on behalf

22:16

of the Lord. He told me to come destroy you.

22:20

And he's telling Hezekiah, he's

22:22

like, you think your Lord's gonna protect you. But he's like,

22:24

what if the Lord told me to come to destroy you?

22:27

Which very well, I mean, that's what the

22:29

God's done in the past with Israel.

22:32

But Hezekiah was serving God. And

22:35

so he, even when this bad thing was coming against him,

22:37

even though he did all the right things, this

22:39

was the story of our marriage in the beginning. We

22:41

believed we deserved something from God because we

22:43

saved ourselves. And we believed we did all

22:45

the right things. We were missionaries, loving God.

22:48

And we're like, why are

22:50

we suffering? And the enemy

22:52

told us over and over and over

22:54

again. He's like, yeah, you should quit. He's

22:57

not giving you what you deserve. That

23:00

was the point. Yeah, why are you doing this? Why are

23:02

you doing this? And

23:04

so, but he did what was right. And

23:07

this happens to us. And that's

23:09

what's hard is he immediately got

23:11

opposition. He got opposition

23:13

like in a major way. But

23:16

I love what the leaders do. So

23:18

you said, what do we do? What are we doing? We

23:20

feel like we're supposed to serve God in this way. We're doing the

23:23

right thing. We're trying to walk in His ways. And

23:26

so listen to what the leaders do. This is something that as

23:28

believers, we should be doing for each other. 2

23:31

Kings 18, 20, 60, 29. Then

23:34

Eliachim, the son of Hilkiah and

23:37

Shebna and Joah said

23:39

to the Reb Shekah. So this is

23:41

what's really cool. So the army comes

23:44

against Judah and they're all

23:46

on the outskirts. And these messengers

23:48

are yelling out at the city

23:50

gates. And there's people on the walls

23:52

and there's the people inside the city. And

23:54

so all of these leaders of Judah

23:57

are there listening and they yell out.

24:00

speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand

24:02

it. Do not speak to us in

24:04

the language of Judah within the hearing

24:06

of the people who are on the wall." So

24:09

what's happening is these leaders, they're

24:12

trying to protect the people from

24:14

hearing what the Reb Shekah is

24:16

saying. Why do you think he would do

24:18

that? Why do you think they would try and stop them

24:21

from hearing it? Because

24:23

they don't want the people to doubt

24:25

or become insecure or wrestle like the

24:29

opposition. Exactly. They're trying to protect

24:31

the ears of the people so

24:34

that they wouldn't be discouraged, wouldn't

24:36

believe the lies, wouldn't be fearful. So

24:39

this is a major thing. They

24:41

were trying to protect them. And this is something that we need

24:43

to do as parents. I was just talking about

24:45

with my kids. That we

24:47

won't be able to protect them forever. And

24:49

you'll see in this story, it doesn't happen. And we

24:52

won't be able to ask the world to speak in a different

24:54

language. And we can yell out as loud as we

24:56

want, and the world's not going to change the way

24:58

they talk. They're not going to speak. They're going to

25:00

speak specifically because they want our kids ears. But

25:03

we can now, when they're in our homes,

25:05

do our best to protect them. What

25:08

are they listening to? What are they watching? What

25:10

messages are we allowing them to

25:12

hear? What messages are we

25:15

sharing? And so these leaders,

25:17

they speak to us in Aramaic because we

25:19

can understand then that people won't. So

25:22

they won't be able to hear it. And then so

25:26

that's their strategy. And then the

25:28

Reb Shekha does this, which again has to do with words. Yeah,

25:30

it has to do with words. But the Reb Shekha said to them, has

25:33

my master sent me to speak these words to your

25:35

master and to you and not to the men sitting

25:37

on the wall who are doomed with you to eat

25:39

their own dung and to drink their own urine. So

25:41

he just doubles down. He's like, No,

25:44

this is exactly what we're doing. We

25:46

want these people to be fearful. We want

25:48

them to be to recognize that they're

25:50

doomed. We want them to believe that

25:52

because if you believe you're doomed, you're probably going to

25:55

be doomed. They knew the power of their words. Yeah.

25:58

And then verse 28, stood

26:00

and called out in a loud voice in

26:02

the language of Judah, specifically, like went against

26:04

these leaders, they're like, nope, we're gonna specifically

26:08

speak in your language so they can all hear this. Hear

26:10

the word of the great king, the king of

26:12

Assyria, thus says the king, do not let Hezekiah

26:14

deceive you, for he will not be able to

26:17

deliver you out of my hand." Scary.

26:20

Yeah. Scary. So

26:23

you hear those words, these

26:25

people hear those words, and the

26:27

Reb Shekah is hoping that they will rebel or

26:30

surrender. Like, king, Hezekiah,

26:32

you're failing, you're doing something all

26:34

wrong, we've lost, you need

26:37

to give up and make this better for

26:39

us. But

26:42

again, the whole purpose

26:45

of this story that's happening, first of all, is historical,

26:48

but shows the process of a

26:51

king who loves God, and

26:53

also shows the process of how the

26:55

enemy wants to tear down with words,

26:58

and wants to convince and turn

27:01

our beliefs from the truth to lies.

27:03

And is relentless. And is relentless. Yeah.

27:06

And so in 2 Kings

27:09

18.30, let's keep navigating through this and

27:11

see the process. First we had the leaders trying

27:13

to stop the words, like, hey, speak to us,

27:15

and we'll relay the message. And

27:18

the enemy's like, nope, we're gonna say this as

27:20

loud as we can, so that most people can

27:22

hear it. So verse

27:24

30, do not let

27:26

Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord by saying,

27:28

the Lord will surely deliver us, and

27:31

this city will not be given into the hand of the king

27:33

of Assyria. Do not listen to

27:35

Hezekiah, for thus is the king of Assyria, make your

27:37

peace with me and come out to me. And

27:40

each one of you will eat of his own vine,

27:42

and each one of his own victory, and each one

27:44

will drink the water of his own cistern, until

27:47

I come and take you away to the land

27:50

like your own. A land of

27:52

grain and wine, a land

27:54

of bread and vineyards, a land of oil, trees, and honey,

27:58

all of trees and honey, that you may live and not die. Do

28:00

not listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you

28:02

saying the Lord will deliver us. The

28:05

enemy is going to present to

28:08

us as

28:10

he did to Jesus and as he

28:12

does to everyone. Everything you could ever be.

28:14

You serve God and you will die. You

28:17

will suffer. You

28:19

come out. You surrender to me.

28:21

We're gonna...I'll make your life easy.

28:24

I'll take away all the burdens. You'll

28:26

be on my side. There'll be no

28:28

more contention. No more strife. No more

28:30

fighting. No more arguments. No more bloodshed.

28:32

Like, just surrender. This is so much

28:34

better. I'll give you something about

28:36

the King's line to you. Don't listen to him.

28:40

This is our story, Christians. That

28:43

God's like, trust in me. Listen

28:46

to my words. I was gonna

28:48

say that the enemy's strategy of using

28:51

words for war has not changed

28:53

much. He still lures us

28:55

in and tempts us

28:57

with all the things that we want and desire the

29:01

same way this happened and

29:03

the same way all the way back to the Garden of Eden. He

29:06

told Jesus, you don't have to go...you don't have to do it this way.

29:09

Just serve me and I'll give you everything. Jesus

29:11

is like, no, serve the Lord your God only. Even

29:14

under suffering. But

29:16

that's...this is the tactic of the enemy

29:19

is to convince us that following

29:21

God and trusting

29:23

in him is not good,

29:27

is the wrong choice. And

29:29

he's gonna use the evidence of like, look, look

29:31

at this army standing here. Do

29:34

you think your God has stopped us? And

29:37

so, and even the Reb Shekhi

29:40

even does that. He's like, have

29:42

the other country's gods stopped us? Nope.

29:45

Do you think yours is now gonna stop us? And

29:48

he's gonna use what

29:51

we see in the world. Like, wow, look at all

29:53

the victories that the enemy is having. We're

29:56

losing, quote unquote. You

29:59

Know, we're not winning. we're not having victory.

30:01

Said. We just give up to listen to

30:03

that. Do we give into that when we

30:05

trust the Lord him believe what he says

30:07

regardless of all of the evidence around us.

30:09

Regardless, it out loud the voices of the

30:11

enemy. So.

30:16

You. Know, Listen. At

30:18

the message. Don't. Listen to the enemy

30:20

that was with the leaders were trying to do is

30:22

like trying to stop the ears of the people. The.

30:25

Most vulnerable. The weakest. saying.

30:28

Don't listen To This. And.

30:32

Am. Because he wants the

30:34

reps like a wants. Them.

30:36

To listen to him. And. The

30:39

Message of the King of Assyria. Not.

30:41

To the King of health thing as guy

30:43

who's pointing them to God Insane. Know that

30:46

the Lord will. Protect. Us.

30:49

And insist that that's. No

30:51

have this question like wonder why that is a guy

30:53

whose whose voice are we listening to. Whose.

30:56

Was do you listen to when you

30:58

don't feel well? You know when you

31:00

are scared of the future? Is it.

31:03

The enemies saying oh yeah, those things are going

31:05

to happen and you're gonna fail and you're gonna

31:07

lose and you're gonna and it's gonna be painful.

31:09

I would say that I hear it, but

31:11

I don't listen to what I listen to

31:14

is what I sign in scripture and often

31:16

times when I listen to a deal, I

31:18

hear your voice often encourage me and speak

31:20

truth and remind me what the scriptures say

31:23

And I think that's a huge testament to

31:25

the marriage relationship and how powerful it is

31:27

that weekends I'm. Just

31:29

stand in that place. Kind of like the leaders

31:32

were trying to be protective. Mean that way. I

31:34

think that spouses can do that for each other.

31:37

A man and that's men. One

31:39

of your greatest roles is to

31:41

be that, like those leaders of

31:43

Judah to. Recognize.

31:45

The lies. And to try

31:48

and stop those voices. But. I would say that

31:50

we can't be doing that for each other if

31:52

we are some. they're not in the word and

31:54

believe in confidence the truth that is there because

31:56

you can't offer that to someone else if you

31:58

don't believe it. Through. I believe

32:00

the right words first. So

32:03

let's move on a little bit more. I'm coming

32:05

to the end of my story and then we'll

32:08

do your story next. But let's learn from what

32:10

Isaiah does. Isaiah was the

32:13

prophet in this time and he was the

32:15

prophet to King Hezekiah. And

32:17

God comes to Isaiah and tells him

32:19

to go to King Hezekiah and to reassure him.

32:22

He says, go reassure Hezekiah. So

32:28

2 Kings 9, 19-6 Isaiah said to them,

32:30

say to your master, thus says the Lord,

32:32

do not be afraid because of the words

32:35

that you have heard with

32:37

which the servants of the King of Syria have

32:39

reviled me. He says,

32:42

don't be afraid. It reminds me of when

32:44

Jesus says, they're gonna persecute you because they hate

32:46

me. We

32:48

have to remember. He's like, but take heart. Yeah,

32:50

I've overcome the world. So

32:53

this is what this is what Isaiah, this is

32:55

what God says through Isaiah. So it's God really

32:58

going to King Hezekiah, but he's using Isaiah. He's

33:00

saying, do not be afraid because of

33:02

the words that you have heard. Do

33:05

not be afraid. This is especially

33:07

in the world we live in now. Do

33:10

not be afraid of the words that

33:12

the news tells you. Do

33:14

not be afraid of what the enemy is speaking

33:17

against you as a believer as because you've put

33:19

your faith in Jesus. Do

33:21

not be afraid because in reality, the

33:24

words that are being spoken are reviling God, not

33:27

you, not me. It's

33:29

reviling God. It's against God. And

33:32

so he reminds him of the truth and encourages him not to be

33:34

afraid. And then the next

33:36

thing we need to learn is how

33:39

Hezekiah responds. So we

33:41

have the leaders, how they responded. We have

33:43

Isaiah and how he responded going and reassuring.

33:45

Like you were just talking about the husband

33:48

and the wife can do this together of

33:50

reassuring each other of the truth. This

33:52

is what Hezekiah does in 19

33:55

verse 14. Hezekiah

33:57

received a letter from the hand of the messengers. and

34:00

read it. So there's this letter that gets brought to

34:02

him. And as the

34:04

Kaya went up to the house of the

34:06

Lord and spread it before the Lord, this

34:09

is his response. He takes

34:11

a letter, he reads it, and

34:13

then he goes straight to the house of the Lord and lays it on

34:15

the altar and prays. And

34:19

that's what we should be doing. How often do we

34:21

get in our cycles of

34:24

like we're in this feedback loop

34:26

of fear, this feedback loop of,

34:28

I'm not good enough, this feedback loop of, I'm

34:31

not capable, or God's not with

34:33

me. What if this happens? What if that

34:35

happens? And we're ruminating

34:38

on those negative words,

34:40

those lies in reality, instead

34:42

of ruminating on the Word of God

34:45

that reassures us, that reminds us, going

34:47

to God and saying, God,

34:49

here's the message from the enemy

34:53

and lay it down on the altar and

34:55

ask him to speak to us. That's good.

34:59

Yeah, it was really good. I was loving the story

35:01

of those. There was so much stuff in it I

35:03

wanted to like, because there's earlier

35:06

on stuff, there's later on stuff and I was

35:08

too much. So you should

35:10

go read it. It's in 2 Kings starting in chapter

35:12

18, even probably

35:15

even a little bit before that, but cool.

35:19

So why don't we go on to the next

35:22

story? Okay, mine's much briefer. But

35:25

again, how it's encouraging, it's still encouraging.

35:28

In the beginning of this episode, you know, we

35:30

both had mentioned how we were googling, what

35:34

powerful stories in the Bible reveal

35:36

or use words that, you know,

35:38

like I used to say sticky,

35:41

and I couldn't find what I was

35:44

looking for, and be able to share with

35:46

you guys. And so then I started thinking,

35:48

okay, well, what stories in the Bible have

35:50

impacted me? Like what words do I remember?

35:52

What has had an impact in my life?

35:54

Because your own sticky words. Yes, who

35:57

needs Google? So. about

36:00

this last year and the phrase even

36:02

if really stood out to me.

36:04

So I went back to Daniel and

36:07

read through that and I told Aaron, I think this is the story

36:09

that I want to share. And

36:12

you guys are all familiar with it. But

36:14

we'll still read about it. It's

36:16

in Daniel 3, 12-18. It

36:19

says, there are certain Jews whom

36:21

you have appointed over the affairs of

36:24

the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and

36:26

Abednego. These men, O king,

36:28

pay no attention to you. They do

36:30

not serve your gods or worship the

36:32

golden image that you have set up.

36:35

Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that

36:37

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So

36:39

they brought these men before the king.

36:41

Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, is

36:43

it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

36:45

that you do not serve my gods

36:48

or worship the golden image that I have set

36:50

up? Now, if you are ready,

36:52

when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe,

36:54

lyre, trigon,

36:58

harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music

37:00

to fall down and worship the image

37:03

that I have made, well and good.

37:05

But if you do not worship, you

37:07

shall immediately be cast into a burning,

37:09

fiery, furnace.

37:13

And who is the God who will

37:15

deliver you out of my hands? Shadrach,

37:17

Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to

37:19

the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no

37:21

need to answer you in this matter.

37:23

If this be so, our God whom

37:25

we serve is able to deliver us

37:27

from the burning, fiery furnace, and

37:29

He will deliver us out of your hand,

37:32

O King. And this is verse 18. This is the

37:34

part that stands out. But if

37:36

not, and some versions say, even if,

37:39

be it known to you, O King, that we

37:41

will not serve your gods or worship the golden

37:43

image that you have set up. And

37:47

so the reason that I wanted to share this, again,

37:49

different versions say it a little bit different, but it

37:51

means the same thing. So it says, but if not,

37:53

or even if, that

37:56

is the sticky phrase. Those are the powerful words

37:58

that I think so many people... rely

38:00

on, cling to, put their trust in

38:02

when it comes to their relationship with

38:04

the Lord. This idea that

38:06

this really bad thing is happening,

38:09

but no matter what I'm going to serve the Lord in

38:12

it. And if... Even if He doesn't change my

38:14

circumstances. Even if He doesn't heal me. Even if He

38:16

doesn't save me out of this. Exactly. Because

38:18

as humans and in our flesh, there are so many different

38:21

ways that we desire an outcome. There

38:24

are preferences, there are opinions that we

38:26

have about the ideal... We know best.

38:29

You're not doing it right, Lord. You

38:31

need to switch this up a bit. But

38:33

the heart of a believer is truly

38:35

to be found in the humility of

38:37

saying, even if, or but

38:39

if not, if the circumstances don't play

38:41

out the way that I desire, I'm

38:43

still going to follow God. Their

38:46

relationship with God wasn't contingent on

38:49

their circumstances. Which is beautiful. Yeah.

38:52

Beautiful. And what a powerful testimony to Nebuchadnezzar

38:54

and everyone else who's listening, these

38:56

words that... And this is

38:58

like so long ago, you guys, and even still

39:01

today, these words are so powerful. I

39:03

think it's interesting that the

39:06

same kind... So the enemies

39:08

of Hezekiah said,

39:11

who is this God you bring your trust in? Yeah,

39:13

they don't believe in Him. And Nebuchadnezzar says, who is

39:15

this God that's going to deliver you out of my

39:17

hands? This

39:20

is a tactic of the enemy. It's like

39:23

to make us doubt God's

39:25

relationship to us. Make

39:27

us doubt God's ability in our

39:29

life. Make us doubt what God's

39:31

promised. Yeah. Which again, I love their response

39:33

here because they're basically saying like, of course we

39:36

believe He has the power to deliver us and

39:38

He could do that. But if He doesn't, we're

39:40

still not going to bow down to you. And

39:43

that's the kind of position and heart that we

39:45

need to have before the Lord and before every

39:47

circumstances and opposition and negative thing that

39:49

we face against, which we're going to. We

39:51

need to experience tribulation, hardship, unwanted

39:53

circumstances, and we have to have

39:55

this heart of worship towards the

39:57

Lord. And I think that it's...

40:00

I keep using the word beautiful. It really

40:02

stood out to me. No matter what

40:04

message the world preaches to us,

40:07

no matter what lies come

40:09

our way, we are going to believe

40:11

God's Word, what He has

40:13

said, what He has promised over those. And

40:16

that's getting harder and harder to do in these days

40:19

because the world wants you to

40:21

stop believing and stop trusting in your

40:24

God. So I was going to

40:26

just share a couple of highlights from this last

40:29

year of why this phrase stood out personally to

40:31

me. And the idea of sharing it with you

40:33

is just to be an encouragement, but also to

40:35

know that I'm sure there's been things in your

40:37

life where maybe you

40:39

received the same set of words from someone or maybe

40:41

you needed to, maybe you needed to

40:44

hear this and you can go back to those moments

40:46

and say, well, I chose

40:48

to honor God regardless of my

40:50

circumstance. And that's a blessing for you. And I

40:52

want you to know that. So

40:54

the first thing I thought of is this time last

40:56

year, actually, I think it was January, but it was

40:59

right in the beginning of the year. I had

41:01

gone to just a doctor check up.

41:04

They do like

41:06

an annual checkup. And my

41:09

doctor was concerned of finding a lump

41:11

in my breast and I had to

41:13

go get a mammogram, which, you

41:16

know, you think in your mind, I'm too young for this.

41:18

Some people would probably say, no, you're not. But I was

41:21

terrified. I was so scared and I didn't even

41:23

feel like sharing it with a lot of people.

41:25

I shared it with obviously Aaron and a couple

41:27

of close friends just

41:29

for prayer. And I was sitting in the waiting

41:32

room and I had already had my first check

41:35

and my sister-in-law was texting her back

41:37

and forth and she wrote in big, bold letters

41:39

and text me right back, even if, and

41:42

then comes back and says, remember in Daniel,

41:44

you know, that no matter what happens,

41:46

Jen, God is good

41:48

and he's got you. And it was so encouraging.

41:50

And right after I read those and I was

41:53

feeling all good, the technician came out and said,

41:55

so, you know, the one side that we were concerned about

41:57

looked okay, but there's this other side. And I was like,

42:00

I had to go back for another exam and it

42:02

was just my mind was

42:04

racing but all I could think about with these words

42:06

even if and I just kept thinking God no matter

42:08

what happens at the end of the day I know

42:11

you have me and I know that you are

42:13

the one authoring my story and I'm going to

42:16

trust in you and it's a hard thing to

42:18

do. I'm not making it sound easy. I'm just.

42:21

Well it's a surrender. It's a laying down of your own life and

42:23

saying no matter what happens I'm not going to stop

42:25

serving you. I'm not going to stop following you. But

42:28

this is how powerful words can be because

42:30

just moments before I was in that

42:34

race of anxiety and

42:36

frustration and wondering what

42:38

if and my what if got turned

42:40

into even if and it was such a really cool.

42:42

I like that. Turn your what if into even if.

42:44

There you go. Yeah. So

42:47

then I feel like this freeze came up several

42:49

other times but the one other thing that really

42:51

stood out to me was I already

42:53

talked about our ladies group but every other year

42:55

we do a retreat and my

42:58

friend was in charge of kind of setting up the theme

43:00

and planning it all out. I

43:02

remember this. She wrote to us and said hey

43:04

a lot of a lot of us have been through some hard things

43:06

this last year. I'm thinking what if

43:08

we did even if as a theme and

43:11

I got taken back to this moment

43:13

in January where I was like yes that's so beautiful

43:15

and I was thinking about all the different hardships that

43:17

some of the women have faced this last year and

43:20

it just felt so good. And

43:23

so the whole theme for the weekend was

43:25

even if and it was so beautiful and

43:27

so in learning the guitar I

43:29

know I've shared this with you guys. I'm not that

43:31

great by any means but I found this song called

43:34

even if by mercy me which you should go look

43:36

up it's a great song. I

43:40

think I have some of the lyrics here of the chorus

43:42

and it says this is what the even if song says

43:45

I know the sorrow I know the hurt would

43:47

all go away if you just say the word

43:49

but even if you don't my hope is in

43:51

you alone. And I got

43:53

to share it I sang the song and played it

43:56

for the women's retreat and here we

43:59

go. back to the power of words, knowing

44:03

that God in just a

44:05

word, in just a breath, in just his

44:08

power could change our circumstances, could

44:10

change us, could change everything

44:12

right now. I

44:15

think that's a big power to believe in.

44:17

And I do believe that. But

44:19

I also have faith and believe

44:21

that even if he doesn't change

44:23

anything, my hope is going to be in

44:25

him. Well, because he's given us,

44:28

even if he doesn't change anything in

44:30

our circumstances physically, he's

44:32

given us everything we need to stay

44:36

focused on him, to walk with him,

44:39

even if nothing changes in our life, in

44:42

our circumstances. And those are the words that we

44:44

need to rely on. The promises that God gave

44:46

us are not just for the here and

44:48

now, they're for eternity. But they're

44:50

also for the here and now. They secure

44:53

our minds. They protect our

44:55

hearts. And those

44:57

are what we need to be listening

45:00

to, those words, just like Hezekiah, and

45:02

just like Isaiah reassuring Hezekiah,

45:05

and just like those leaders

45:07

trying to protect from the

45:09

lies, the discouragement, that

45:12

we would be that to each other. Not only would

45:14

we believe in ourselves, but that we would do it

45:16

for each other and remind each other when we recognize,

45:19

like, oh, what you're saying, that's not what God says.

45:21

Like, let's believe what God says over what we

45:24

feel, or over what that person's saying, or over what

45:26

the news is saying, or what the world is saying. I

45:29

also just want to add that that's really good. As

45:32

you were talking, I kept going back to the fiery

45:34

furnace, and I just kept thinking, there's this other song

45:36

we like to sing, Another in the Fire,

45:39

the kids love that one. But

45:41

to be reminded that when we believe

45:43

in Jesus, we are not alone. He

45:45

is with us. And

45:47

whether those fiery flames of whatever

45:49

circumstance we're facing, scorch

45:52

us or not, He is with us. And

45:55

we need to be reminding each

45:57

other that in marriage, because there are going

45:59

to be going to be opposition to your marriage,

46:01

there's going to be hardship, there's going to be fire,

46:04

flaming arrows, whatever you want to call it,

46:08

maybe even every single day. And we

46:10

can't afford to

46:14

feel like we're going through it alone. Our

46:17

husbands, our wives, we need each other. We

46:20

need to be that voice, reminding them

46:22

of what is true, reminding them that the Lord is with

46:24

us, walking with us in

46:26

it all. That was

46:29

good. I want to pray for us.

46:31

We've come to the end, right? Father,

46:34

we love you. We thank you that you've

46:36

given us your words and that we can trust

46:38

them, that they are perfect, that they're complete, that

46:41

there's nothing about them that we need to doubt. And

46:44

even when we do have doubts, God, you're patient

46:47

with us and your Holy Spirit guides us

46:49

to truth and reminds us of the

46:51

truth. And I just pray, Lord, as believers, as Christians,

46:53

as those listening, have

46:56

faith in your Son Jesus, God, that you would renew

46:59

our minds and by doing so transform

47:01

our lives. God, that we would

47:03

do like Hezekiah and that when we get the the

47:05

words, the lies of the world and our enemy, that

47:08

we would take them and lay them before you. And

47:11

that we would allow you, Lord, to replace those lies

47:13

with your truth. And that we would

47:15

do like Isaiah and like the leaders of Israel and

47:17

Judah, that we would come to each other and encourage

47:19

each other with the truth and

47:22

remind each other often of what your word says. And

47:25

I just pray for all those listening, God, that you would grow

47:27

the miniserion, grow Jennifer and I in this area as well, that

47:30

we would learn to hear your words so loudly

47:32

that the lies and the words of the world

47:34

would be so hard to

47:36

hear. We love you in

47:38

Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Thanks

47:41
