law cars fortune by Alex Schwartzman.

1:20

Who Nothi is making house calls thank you for coming lekar the

1:26

man's voice is both tired and hopeful. The lecarre notes the

1:31

cheaply made furniture and bare walls of the small home. A woman

1:36

sits on the couch her eyes red and puffy. She stares into space

1:41

and makes no move to acknowledge you Nothi. Her husband looks

1:45

grim and determined his hands tremble slightly, as he offers

1:50

her a bundle of bank notes. Who Nothi glances at the notes. It

1:54

isn't much but there is more than one way to pay for her

1:58

services. You understand how this works? Who not the asks.

2:05

Both of them nod. Neither will look her in the eye nor each

2:09

other. Lead me to him. She says the man shows her to the next

2:16

room where a four year old boy is lying in bed and healthy,

2:20

walks in and shakes her head when the father tries to follow.

2:24

She shuts the door behind her. The boy is burning up with

2:30

fever. She lives her hands on the child's forehead and focuses

2:33

on his illness. It's merely pneumonia, and disease that

2:38

should have been treated with herbs and mixtures instead of

2:41

magic. The family was too lacks or too poor to seek such

2:46

treatment in time. The sickness lingered and grew. It had taken

2:51

firm hold of the child's lungs. It's too late for the healer.

2:56

She realizes as she studies his small sweat drenched frame.

3:00

without her help. The child will be dead within a day. No Nothi

3:06

closes her eyes and readies herself. She focuses on the

3:10

prison in her mind which holds 1000 deaths. She wills the

3:14

tiniest opening into existence taking great care not to permit

3:19

any of her wards to escape. She begins to hum softly using her

3:24

magic to draw the pneumonia out of the boy. She traps the malady

3:29

contains it within a mental cell. A few minutes later, the

3:33

boy's fever is gone. His breathing steady. The lecarre

3:38

feels bloated like a balloon overfilled with water, stretched

3:42

to its limits and ready to burst. She exhale slowly forces

3:48

herself to focus again and begins humming a different tune.

3:53

She grabs hold of another sickness, one that is more

3:57

potent, more dangerous. One that takes up far more space and her

4:02

prison. She pours it into the boy she feels instantly lighter,

4:10

as if an enormous pressure is lifted off her temples. The

4:14

malignant tumor she expelled had been a challenging prisoner to

4:17

contain a burden that required vigilance and fortitude. One

4:22

that she bore for far too long. It Nestle's in the child's brain

4:28

now. Bonatti exits of the room without looking at the boy

4:32

again. I bought you a decade. She tells the father perhaps

4:39

longer then he will need another lacquer. But she knows that this

4:45

family will never save up enough to pay for a lecturer to take on

4:49

this tumor by the time it is fully grown. The man Thanks for

4:54

profusely but his wife stares daggers that do not be until

4:58

finally she can hold Back no more doubt. She's tells her

5:03

husband don't thank her. The witch has done us no favors.

5:09

When off he has heard it all before, but she can't help

5:12

responding. Your son will live longer. He has a chance now.

5:18

Without my ministrations he would have had none. The woman's

5:23

tears are directly in the eye. Your user is merchant, not a

5:27

healer. You tray death for worse death and profit from the

5:31

exchange. I don't know how you let us live with yourself. Then

5:37

she spits on the ground that do not these feet. Do not the

5:42

pities the woman's lack of facility for logic. This forlorn

5:46

creature knows nothing of the burden she bears of the strain

5:50

of containing so many deaths for so long. She thinks back to her

5:54

years of training. To her mentors patient guidance, it

5:59

takes a special mind to become a lecarre a special strength. His

6:05

words reassure her just as they did back when he lived. Without

6:11

another word she turns to leave. The father trails her tries to

6:15

apologize for his wife's discourtesy, who Nothi ignores

6:19

him and walks away. Back in her home, or not the gradually releases the pneumonia

6:30

into her own body. Her adult immune system would be able to

6:34

handle it, and she cannot afford to hang on to every sickness she

6:38

captures. Her prison is nearly full as it is replete with much

6:43

worse things. It isn't often that she can unburden herself

6:48

the way she did with the tumor. And even with it gone, she can

6:52

feel the rest of her deaths constantly pushing probing

6:56

against her prisons walls. Four days later, she is coughing,

7:03

nauseous and feverish. When her Stewart arrives with news go

7:08

away, she croaks I won't see any clients but another week. This

7:15

can't wait insists I found a vessel. The news Joel to Nothi.

7:21

If true, this is a rare once in a lifetime find. A vessel is a

7:26

healthy body of someone with a talent for magic, which also

7:30

lacks a conscious mind. Her mentor searched desperately for

7:35

one late in life when he felt himself becoming too weak to

7:39

contain his captive deaths, but didn't succeed. The steward who

7:44

served her mentor before her was well trained to never see

7:48

searching. She has to hurry before the other lecarre is to

7:52

find out about the vessel to some would spend all their

7:56

treasure to possess such a prize. Who not the chance to

8:00

pneumonia back into her mental sell. She needs to be in her

8:05

best form for this. She arrives at a house in the prosperous

8:10

part of town and she is ushered to a young woman's bedside. The

8:15

girl fell in her temple on a sharp edge or so her widowed

8:19

father claims there are telltale signs that insinuate a different

8:24

story. Her body is perfectly healthy though. Besides a few

8:30

bruises, her mind is gone. She will never wake up from a coma.

8:37

Oh, nothing can sense the magic within the girl. She is indeed a

8:41

vessel. The greatest fortune immature lecarre could hope to

8:46

possess. What's more, the father eager to keep the circumstances

8:52

of the girls injuries discreet demands only a small fortune.

8:58

The word of the vessel hasn't spread sparing or Nothi the

9:01

necessity for a bidding war against other like ours. She

9:05

hands over the money and is alone with the vessel at last.

9:10

The girls magic is strong. It takes a special mind to become a

9:14

car. Had things turned out differently. She could have made

9:19

a fine one. And healthy wonders briefly if her magic could

9:23

overcome the girl's death wake her from the coma. But even

9:27

attempting this would be ludicrous, akin to a diver using

9:31

a mallet to shatter the finest largest Pearl she found in her

9:35

lifetime just to learn if it would break. Who not the places

9:41

her hands on the vessels warm forehead and opens the gates of

9:45

her prison wider than ever before. She chants cancers and

9:53

plagues heart disease and stroke schizophrenia and smallpox pour

9:58

into the vessel until for the first was time in decades, who

10:02

northeast prison is vacant. The lecarre staggers out of the

10:08

house lightheaded and weak. She can't think can't focus. Is this

10:14

what she's supposed to feel like? She lets a steward help

10:19

her into the carriage and drive her home. Moments after she

10:22

crawls into her bed and permits herself to lower her eyelids.

10:27

Sleep claims her. In the morning, she wakes with a

10:32

feeling of anguish, guilt and revulsion of the things she's

10:36

done the way she is, her calling as a car hit her all at once.

10:42

She has never felt this way. Not before her apprenticeship to

10:46

become a car nor sense. It is infinitely worse than corralling

10:51

a multitude of deaths within her mind, and she can't bear it. And

10:57

Aarthi remembers with perfect clarity, her calm demeanor, her

11:02

ability to survive and even flourish. While plying her

11:06

trade. The detached clinical manner, she can no longer muster

11:13

and takes a special mind to become a car but perhaps what

11:17

makes it special is a flaw rather than a gift.

11:23

She comes to believe that whatever depression or mental

11:27

block had allowed her to function must have somehow been

11:29

poured into the vessel, along with all the other sickness.

11:34

Whatever thing made her broken and allowed her to live with

11:37

herself. She must have it back. She rushes over to the vessels

11:43

home but she's too late. The young woman passed away

11:47

overnight extinguished by one of the many deaths meant for

11:51

others. The body has already been burned. And Aarthi leaves

11:57

the vessels home and stark and Windows staring at her with

12:02

cincher. She picks up the bass as she struggles to cope with

12:06

the guilt in her heart. The weight of decisions she made

12:10

feeling much heavier than her mind's prison ever had. Her feet

12:16

hit the cobblestones faster until she was running down the

12:19

streets of her city. eyes stung by sweat her lungs burning in

12:25

agony. She is an expert click are able to capture any sickness
