Hello and welcome to meet us pod episode 13. I'm your host D

0:11

Mitas. Our story for this episode comes to us from Heather

0:15

Santo. Heather works as a chemist in Pittsburgh, PA. Her

0:19

educational background is biochemistry, forensic science

0:22

and law. In the past two years she's had flash and short

0:26

stories published by ink and sword, yellow mama spaceports

0:31

and spider silk retreats from oblivion, Jersey double press,

0:36

the haunted traveler, bewildering stories and the

0:39

mystic blue review with two stories pending in the

0:42

Staybridge. Joining me telling this story are Charlotte North,

0:48

Elijah be more. Michael Blakey, Lex Zorn, and Stacy Cotham. Stay

0:55

tuned after the story for full actor bios and some news about

0:58

the future of metus media. Without further ado, here's our

1:02

story. How does your garden grow by Heather Santo. I slicked back my

1:20

hair and flash a dazzling smile. Check again please. I tell the

1:25

young woman at the front door. She checks her screen for the

1:28

10th time. I'm sorry, there's still no one by the name Jasper

1:32

crane here. honest mistake, I assure her. Claudia gave me a

1:38

verbal invite at the Worthington's charity event last

1:41

week. Maybe she forgot to tell you. I amp up the smile even

1:46

more and inch my way across the threshold. I'm sorry she repeats

1:50

but I wave a dismissive hand. There she is now I say and call

1:55

out to Claudia. My dear. There seems to be some mix up. Claudia

2:01

saunters over a black dress fitting like a second skin on

2:04

her curvaceous body. Faint recognition registers our face.

2:10

How do I know you? We met at the Worthington's last week. I

2:15

slipped my arm around her shoulders. Remember I told you I

2:19

wouldn't miss your opening for the world. She squinted me

2:22

through thick black frames. Next years 2035 models smart glasses

2:27

by the look of them and tosses a mass of lime green hair over one

2:31

shoulder. Why don't you show me around? I suggest it's okay

2:36

mossy she tells the frazzled girl of the door. I'll show she

2:43

falters and I flashed a smile bright enough to light the city.

2:47

Jasper crane I offer?

2:49

Yes, I'll show Mr. Crane around from here. Thank you.

2:54

We walk into the dimly lit entrance of the gallery aptly

2:57

dubbed artsy fartsy surrounded by the city's elite

3:01

Jasper. We definitely did not meet at the Worthington's last

3:05

week, or anywhere before for that matter. Yours is a smile I

3:10

will not forget why I'm insulted. So easily forgotten by a woman as

3:17

beautiful as yourself. I'm sure you have a legion of beautiful women at your beck and

3:21

call. You have however, piqued my curiosity.

3:27

She says taking my elbow. I'll take it. I navigate the crowd. A

3:33

large group is gathered in front of the gardenia garden. The

3:36

Knights main attraction and namesake of the exhibit opening.

3:40

Claudia is responsible for creating set exhibit as well as

3:44

part owner of artsy fartsy it's breathtaking. I don't remember

3:51

real flowers but I've heard this emulations pale in comparison to

3:54

the real thing. How did you do it? Claudia shakes her head

4:00

sadly. This is one of the first subjects I captured with

4:04

environmental camera technology. I have a friend a few hours

4:08

north with a pretty house in the country. I sprinkled micro

4:12

lenses in her garden to capture the individual images. And that

4:16

was surround vision display edited each from 2d into this

4:20

life sized 3d display.

4:22

Fascinating. Out of those work. I motion of the projectors on

4:28

the wall. They emit an invisible fog, allowing me to adjust focal

4:33

plane and depth of field and project the images into space.

4:38

How soon after you photograph the garden did the freak pod

4:41

fungus hit the US? Less than six weeks.

4:45

I walk into the exhibit. Immediately enveloped in glossy

4:49

green leaves and soft white blossoms. It's almost as

4:54

beautiful as the photographer. Okay, Jasper. Enough chitchat? Who are you on? What are you

5:00

doing at my exhibit opening, I remove my arm from her shoulders and raise both hands

5:04

and defeat. You got me, I say and pull an old photograph from

5:09

inside my tux jacket. It's from a now obsolete instant camera.

5:15

The muted colors of the image are bordered in white paling in

5:18

comparison to the vibrancy of guarding your garden. I hand it

5:22

to Claudia. How did you get this?

5:25

The photo depicts a young woman dressed in a simple white t

5:28

shirt, knees drawn up to her chest with a single gardenia

5:31

tucked behind one ear. Gillian is my older sister. I say. I can

5:39

see the realization slide into place. Although Jillian's

5:42

features are softer, like the flower in her hair, the family

5:46

resemblance is undeniable. We drifted apart. Both so focused on our careers. Claudia

5:53

whispers me with photography and her with science. She

5:57

looks up at me. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her.

6:02

She's in a coma. I say and Gloria grips my wrist daily. has

6:10

been for almost a year what happens? I bought a business

6:14

card for my tux jacket. The front of it reads yours Greek

6:18

food delivery service. cloudier rips it from my fingers. Meet me

6:24

tomorrow. at this address. Five o'clock sharp. I'll explain

6:28

everything. I turned to leave Claudia to her adoring fans. And

6:32

as I walk away she calls out Jasper. I glance over my

6:37

shoulder. This is the best photograph I've ever taken, she says

6:42

holds the instant image to her heart. Yours is a hole in the

6:49

wall on the north side. The food delivery gigs started out as a

6:52

front from Aleyda scheme but much to my surprise it quickly

6:56

grew into a profitable business. The credit goes to Xander my

7:00

chef and a former Army Ranger. What's cookin? I yell as I enter

7:06

gear yours. I launch myself onto a bar stool and prop my feet up

7:10

on the counter. Xander a mountain of a man with a

7:14

screamin Eagle haircut is busy in the grill. Same thing that's

7:17

cooking every day. He growls Sandra's famous gyros my man go

7:23

three, then ratty haired and blue spectacles. The antithesis

7:27

of Xander good falls from his spot at Central Command. He's a

7:32

drone pilot and one hell of a hacker was six screens hooked up

7:36

to a network of computers, none of which I understand. It

7:39

probably rivals anything set up at the CIA or delivery drone,

7:44

which cost me a nice chunk of change sits on the table next to

7:47

Central Command. We nicknamed him Hermes. Did you have Chow

7:51

yet? Xander asks, throwing a guy row in front of me. His apron

7:56

says kitchen bitch across the chest. No, I haven't. And I take

8:01

a huge bite. You're welcome. he grumbles turning back to the

8:05

grill. So where's this photographer chick? Guthrie asks

8:08

as Claudia saunters through the door right here,

8:11

she says flipping her lime green ponytail with sensuous grace.

8:15

Xander and Guthrie stare, mouths agape order up. I call and slam

8:22

my hand down on the kitchen service Bell. Conrad explodes

8:26

out of the stockroom long limbs Tangling together like yarn. I'm

8:30

here I'm coming. I've got it. He yells and Paul's face first in

8:34

front of Claudia's red high heeled pumps. The kitchen erupts

8:38

into laughter and I help Conrad to his feet easier years newest

8:43

hire a struggling ventriloquist who walked in one day and asked

8:46

if we were hiring. We weren't but I gave him a job on the

8:49

spot. The guy although a bit high strung, is extremely

8:53

likable and eager to please. Plus his dummy Pierre gives

8:58

Xander the creeps. Well guys, something smells delicious.

9:04

After I introduced the photographer to Xander Guthrie

9:07

and Conrad, we get down to business. Not the guy real

9:10

business, the real business. But we do eat Kairos as we talk, the

9:16

risk of family Claudia exclaims incredulous.

9:20

How did you learn get involved with the mafia?

9:24

Indirectly as it turns out, I explain her colleague, some guy

9:29

drowning in gambling debt was developing mind control

9:32

technology. One of those main bruisers isn't really this guy

9:35

makes Xander look like a kitten broke into the complex where she

9:38

worked. plan to steal the guy's tech to make up for the debt and

9:42

then break the guy's legs for good measure. stumbled into

9:45

Joe's lab by mistake. I pause to take a deep breath. what Joe was

9:50

working on was more valuable to the mafia than mind control. And

9:53

what was that? Flowers resistant to the freak pod fungus? Top

10:00

Secret stuff. Her first success was with gardenias Claudia

10:05

stares at me, speechless. The boss big Polly thought they

10:10

could make a mint selling real flowers, weddings,

10:13

anniversaries, funerals. You not believe what people were willing

10:16

to pay for flowers on the black market. So they went in put my

10:20

sister didn't give up her flowers without a fight.

10:23

Reserves guy put her in a coma and she's been at St. Margaret's

10:26

ICU sense. What can I do to help? Claudia asks without

10:31

hesitation later that night one of rizos men places his weekly

10:35

delivery order like clockwork Xander prepares the Kairos

10:39

Conrad boxes everything up and Guthrie fires up the drone.

10:43

Claudia pops open her very expensive laptop and we wait.

10:47

Watching the drones feed when one of the central command

10:50

screens holy cow.

10:54

Claudia says when she spots Rizzo is bruiser the front door

10:57

of the delivery location. Ironically, the mob works out of

11:00

a kitchen design store a few blocks south of here he is told

11:04

you he was big. I say as the behemoth takes the box of food

11:07

from the drone. Guthrie pilots the drone back home and we

11:10

switch views to cloudy his laptop. The microlens is

11:14

attached to the food box which on and she starts capturing

11:18

images and rapid fire speed. Photos of 12 wiseguys plus big

11:23

Polly making a baker's dozen pop up in succession. We also get a

11:27

complete layout of the room. There's a door in the back that

11:30

immediately catches Guthrie's interest. Something important

11:33

behind there, he says pointing voice and face recognition on

11:37

the outside. If you ain't big Polly or one of us could pose

11:40

you ain't getting in there. I look at Claudia. Can you be back

11:44

next week, same time. We're gonna get Jill's flowers back.

11:54

The next Saturday, we gather back at years. Xander works

11:57

furiously at the grill preparing the resume family's weekly

12:00

order. There's a tub of his secret guiro sauce next to the

12:03

grill. The recipe kept secret even from me. Except this week,

12:08

I've added my own secret little ingredient. Good old Georgia

12:12

homeboys enough to knock out even the largest of results

12:15

clan. Order Up. Xander yells hitting the kitchen service

12:19

Bell. Conrad boxes everything up for delivery and Guthrie fires

12:23

up the drone wants to be big boy bruiser takes the box from

12:27

Hermes. Claudia pulls anxiously at her lime green braids. Are

12:31

you sure this is going to work? Nope.

12:34

I say Guthrie has loaded the photo software onto one of

12:38

Central Command screens. While he brings Hermes back to he is

12:42

he simultaneously switches on Claudia's micro lenses, again,

12:46

attached to the delivery box and captures images of rizos men big

12:51

Polly included devouring Xander Slimer Skyros. The secret sauce

12:56

drips through their fingers splattering on the table covered

12:58

with playing cards. We wait. Less than an hour later all 13

13:04

men are down for the count. That's our cue. All right,

13:08

everyone loaded into van drive a few blocks over Guthrie riding

13:13

shotgun to the kitchen design store. The old panel van 2018

13:17

model but still more reliable than many of my ex girlfriends

13:21

rattles as if in anticipation. Pull in here. Claudia exclaims

13:26

and I slide the van into a side alley. Everyone out I say and

13:31

look at Conrad in the rearview mirror. Are you ready? Yes. He

13:36

squeaks and opens the back door. Luckily for us, Rousseau's men

13:40

didn't lock the door. After grabbing the guy rose from the

13:43

drone. We slipped through the darkness and into the store. The

13:47

room reeks of cigar smoke and guiro sauce. All 13 men are

13:51

slumped in various positions around the car table. Big barley

13:54

at the head. I pet his flabby cheek as we walked by. How's the

13:59

food big barley? He snorts in response and turns his head the

14:04

other way. snoring like a buzzsaw Conrad Harry. Conrad

14:09

approaches the back door. He's been practicing for this moment

14:12

all week. Studying online videos of big Polly's last court

14:16

deposition. Hey, it's me big boy. He says mimicking the mafia

14:21

bosses voice perfectly. A lot on the voice recognition screen

14:26

blinks green Xander looking totally creeped out. Olds up

14:30

here to the facial recognition scanner. Guthrie 3d printed a

14:34

perfect replica of the bullies face earlier in the week and

14:37

swapped it out for the one on Conrad's dummy. Pierre looked

14:41

decidedly more ugly for the effort. Another green light

14:45

flashes in the back door lock clicks open. Before anyone can

14:49

say anything. I push through and walk into an illegal grow

14:53

operation of a most unusual kind. Instead of kitchen design

14:58

supplies the brightly lit room was filled with roses, peonies,

15:04

lilies, tulips and last but not least, guarding Yes. Oh, my God.

15:12

All right, box everything up and loaded in the van. The following

15:17

Monday the news headlines puzzled over the mysterious

15:19

return of freak odd resistant flowers to the lab where they

15:22

were originally stolen from. The story runs tandem with reports

15:26

of the entire Rizzo mob family being hospitalized for ingesting

15:29

large amounts of a date rape drug. In light of these events,

15:34

I decided to permanently close yields for business. While

15:37

Xander Guthrie and Conrad move everything from the kitchen into

15:41

a storage locker on the east side. I drive van to artsy

15:45

fartsy and pick up Claudia. She has a green haired vision and a

15:50

houndstooth print pantsuit. And her hands she holds a tiny

15:54

potted gardenia ready, task.

16:00

So I'll never be we sit in silence as I navigate through midday downtown traffic.

16:06

St. Margaret's is at the heart of the city surrounded by

16:09

simulated flower gardens. Hopefully soon, they'll be

16:12

filled with real flowers. Hello, Jasper. A pretty nurse says to

16:17

me when we enter the ICU. Haven't seen you in a while.

16:20

Yeah, sorry. I flashed a dazzling smile. This is Claudia,

16:24

a friend of Julian's. Uh huh. She says and walks away briskly.

16:31

Emotional for her to enter Julian's room. My older sister's

16:35

like a small child of to an IV under a thin blanket.

16:39

Hi, Jill. Claudia says, and in the state of light peeking through the

16:44

window blinds, places the gardenia next to the hospital

16:48

bed. Links to our author and actors work will be in the show
