A former legal services attorney, Sommer is the honorary chair of the Metropolitan Council on Housing, New York's oldest tenant union. She has been co-chair of the 515-521 West 122nd Street Tenants' Association for over ten years, and has worked as a tenant organizer in Harlem and the South Bronx.
