Within this episode Helen chats to Emily Troscianko PhD.

Emily Troscianko is a researcher and writer who has studied and worked academically for a number of years at the University of Oxford.

Emily also has a history of anorexia nervosa -an illness that affected her from the age of sixteen and from which she grew increasingly unwell for the next ten years.  In 2008, Emily embarked on a recovery treatment attempt with a course of cognitive behavioural therapy, and at this point started the process to reaching a full recovery.

In 2009 Emily started to write a blog called, A Hunger Artist, about her experience with an eating disorder and has written many posts to date on this topic for the Psychology Today website.

Emily’s academic work now focuses on the interactions between fiction reading and eating disorders, while she has also written about consciousness and has plans for future ventures in the eating disorders field.

During the conversation we talk about Emily’s personal history of having an eating disorder and her recovery.  We discuss the importance of persisting with weight gain in recovery from an eating disorder and why target weights are not helpful.

Emily offers her insight and knowledge about the concept of overshoot in recovery and her personal experience with this; while offering advice on how to get started in making those first steps in a recovery attempt.

Within the conversation Emily also tells us about her future ventures, including a recovery app for an eating disorder and writing a book from her experiences and subsequent research.
