I am so excited to chat with my friend, mastermind sister, & entrepreneur, Meg Stypa. We are talking about all the ins and outs of how to becoming a full time freelancer & the transition from the corporate world to freelancing. We dive deep into the real challenges & joys of owning your own freelancing business and Meg breaks it down for how it is possible for you too.

Meg Stypa is a writer and brand strategist who specializes in content strategy and creation for mission-driven organizations. She’s worked in marketing and communications for eight years and has been freelancing full-time for the past two.

In 2018 she went through several big life changes, including an autoimmune disease diagnosis that spurred major personal growth and fueled her mindfulness practice. She writes about her experience and shares her perspective on Instagram @themindfulmeg and on her blog, with the hope of inspiring others to make the most of every day – especially when facing challenges and uncertainty.

The approach she’s taken to building her own brand is a reflection of the unique perspective she brings to her clients in order to help them look at content differently and engage with their audience in a more authentic and meaningful way.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode: [6:00] How Meg Went From Corporate To Becoming a Freelancer Full Time

Meg runs through how you started as a freelancer with a full time client but the challenge was transitioning embracing everything she wanted her life to be outside of the 9-5 desk life. We are conditioned to feel like the number of hours we put at our desk means productivity when really that is not the case & keeps us from the life we want to design. It took her about 6 months to stop feeling guilty going to gym during the day and being comfortable with making her own schedule and hours.

The first place Meg recommends to start getting clients is networking to meet the people out there who will need your services. Meg lives in Boston where there are a ton of start ups and there are a lot of meet ups to access and meet others in events at co-working spaces, health & wellness, or women’s networking events. This is the opportunity to connect & build rapport to get a card or connect on LinkedIn and follow up later with a coffee meet up.

[16:00] Setting Your Pricing & Charging What You’re Worth

Starting with an hourly rate is how Meg began charging for her services. Don’t forget tax! And understand the pay that you want to be taking home. It doesn’t hurt if you know others in your space to ask around for pricing and be able to balance ideas off one another. Depending on the project – you can break down the hours or set what something costs based on the project.

Mindset is huge as a freelancer & Meg is a huge proponent of journaling and mindset work. One of her favorites is the affirmation is that “I am worthy regardless of the work I’m producing”.
