SUSAN BUCKLEY

With over 30 years’ experience in global financial markets, Susan leads QIC’s Liquid Markets Group (LMG) capability in the successful management of a diverse range of global listed market solutions for QIC’s clients.

Recognised as an innovative, high-performing team of 30 investment professionals based in Brisbane and London, LMG manages approximately $27 billion in cash, fixed income and absolute return portfolios and over $70 billion in overlay exposures for near 50 institutional clients. The team’s success has been built on collaborating and co-creating with clients. Today, LMG offers research, portfolio construction, risk management and trading capabilities across cash, fixed income, credit, inflation, FX, equity derivatives and commodity markets, enabling LMG to offer specialised solutions across active management, asset rebalancing and exposure management, liability matching, hedging and downside protection.

Susan and the team’s investment philosophy, risk management and research approach are based on understanding the impacts for client portfolios of fundamental and other factors driving financial markets over varying time frames. LMG has a rigorous investment process, combined with disciplined risk management, which delivers superior investment outcomes for clients across multiple risk environments. The team’s risk management framework ensures ‘best in class’ portfolio construction, integration of ESG considerations, downside protection, efficient implementation, best execution and regulatory developments. 

Before joining QIC in November 2001, Susan held positions as Senior Vice President at Bankers Trust Funds Management, Head of Strategy for NRMA Asset Management and Manager, Fixed Interest, at Suncorp Investment Management. Susan also worked as an economist for National Australia Bank and was Director, Foreign Exchange Services with Syntec Economic Services. 

Susan has a Bachelor of Economics (University of Queensland), a Graduate Diploma in Economics (University of Melbourne), and an MBA (University of Queensland) and is a member of Chief Executive Women. Susan holds an Appointment of Responsible Manager under QPC’s Australian Financial Services Licence, ASIC.

In recognition of her career success, Susan was awarded the 2005 lnsto Magazine Bond Manager of the Year Award, the 2011 Telstra Businesswomen’s Hudson Private and Corporate Sector Award (Qld) and awarded UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence Award, October 2017.
