At first there was only Zurvan, the one free from time, free from place, free from all boundaries of definition.

S/he was alone however so s/he decided for a child and he was called Hurmazd or Mazda. Mazda was supposed to make the heaven and earth and rule over them.

Zurvan prepared for his birth for a thousand years and when doubt was formed over usefulness of this preparation, a second child was formed, too.

So, the one made out of hope was Hurmazd and the one out of doubt was Ahriman.

Zurvan felt the presence of two formations instead of one so s/he promised lordship to the one being born first.

Ahriman upon hearing this promise jumped out before Mazda and claimed lordship.

Because of the promise made, Zurvan left Ahriman in charge for nine thousand years with Mazda chasing him away afterwards.

Ahriman is dark and whatever he makes is foul. Unlike him Mazda is light and his creations are fair to be looked upon.

Whatever Mazda makes, Ahriman tries to destroy or at least manipulates out of his jealousy.

It's a long battle, sometimes won and sometimes lost. But it has been predicted that the final victory at the end of the world belongs to light and the light bearers.
