Welcome to Tech Bit Tuesday episode number four aired on the podcast Mod Tune Win Repeat! This episode is a quick discussion about how does an ignition coil work. The ignition coil works the same way across all platforms using the process of electromagnetic inductance.
An ignitions coil is constructed using an iron core. This iron core is wrapped in thin wire called the secondary winding. The secondary winding is wrapped in a thicker wire called the primary winding.
The primary winding normally has less windings than the secondary winding. The whole arrangement is either contained in an oil bath or set in epoxy to help with heat management.
Current and voltage is applied to the primary winding which produces a magnetic field. When a spark is required the supply to the primary winding is cut and the magnetic field collapses.
As the field collapses the magnetic flux line through the secondary winding creates a higher voltage. This higher voltage is directed to the plug and creates a spark.
