Director James Whale made his return to Universal horror with this 1933 adaptation of H. G. Wells' "The Invisible Man." Though offering a more pessimistic spin on the melodramatic formula of "Frankenstein," it nonetheless displays the auteur's progression away from straight shockers to a more distinctive, black comic sensibility.
