Go, go! Good

0:35

evening and welcome to Monsters

0:38

Among Us. I am your

0:40

guide, Derek Hayes. Welcome

1:02

to tonight's special episode. Now

1:07

when I started this show eight years ago, this

1:10

month, I had no

1:12

idea how successful it would become. At

1:16

the time I was a struggling writer, and

1:18

I simply wanted an artistic outlet. An

1:21

outlet that actually allowed me to not

1:23

only see results, but reap the

1:25

fruits of my labor. Script

1:29

writing simply didn't fulfill

1:31

that need. So

1:33

in other words, I was looking for a new hobby.

1:37

A hobby that might make use

1:39

of this life-long obsession with

1:41

the strange and unusual. But

1:45

despite the odds, here we

1:47

are today. A couple

1:49

weeks shy of eight years and

1:52

still going strong. Now I

1:56

bring all this up, because when I

1:58

started the show, there were a few things that I wanted

2:00

to do. I knew that I wanted to feature. I

2:04

knew I wanted folks to tell their stories

2:06

in their own words and

2:09

hopefully their own voice. That

2:12

much I didn't know. I

2:16

also knew I wanted to pay homage

2:18

to the programs that came before mine.

2:21

Your in-search us, your

2:24

unsolved mysteries, sightings,

2:27

and the art-pills and long-term nipples

2:29

of this existence. And

2:34

having been born and raised in

2:36

the middle of nowhere, I

2:38

knew I wanted to highlight small town

2:41

legends and stories. The

2:44

ones that seemed to slip through the

2:47

cracks. The

2:49

kind that seldom make it to books or

2:51

podcasts or television.

2:57

Because everywhere I've lived there were

2:59

these local legends. Spooky

3:02

places that only folks in

3:04

town knew about and places

3:06

that only spoke about in front

3:09

of me. Fire, real

3:11

lanterns glow, a

3:14

hounded bridge, a tree possessed

3:16

by the devil, a river to

3:18

a river to a creature

3:21

out by the reservoir. Around

3:23

here we call them hometown legends.

3:27

And over the years I've gotten

3:29

pretty good at collecting them. Which

3:32

leads us to this evening. I

3:35

have something special in store for

3:37

you tonight. Another

3:40

installment of that ongoing

3:42

series. An episode

3:44

chock full of stories and tales.

3:47

The far off corners of not

3:50

only the US of A, but all

3:53

around the planet. Stories

3:56

that most have never even

3:58

heard of. myself

4:01

included. So

4:05

to celebrate the end of this, your

4:07

16th season of Monsters

4:09

Among Us, I present to

4:12

you your hometown legend

4:14

season finale. Now

4:17

before we get started, just a few things.

4:21

Your own legends by nature often involve

4:23

tragedy of one sort or another, so

4:26

we will be discussing murder, suicide,

4:29

and other touching subjects throughout this

4:31

episode. So

4:33

let that be your warning. Now,

4:38

as not to delay us

4:40

any further, let's get this sucker

4:43

started. To

4:45

kick us off, we venture to a small

4:47

town on a big river, a

4:51

mere hour from my birthplace

4:53

in Boyo at Home. Mike

4:57

from Ohio, please

5:00

share with us your

5:02

hometown legend. Hi,

5:13

this is Mike in Ohio. I'm

5:16

not sure where this fits into the grand

5:18

scheme of your show, but I enjoy Monsters

5:20

Among Us, and I guess

5:22

I just really wanted to contribute to the show

5:24

by sharing this phenomenon that happened in my community

5:26

when I was a kid. This

5:28

is back in the late 80s in Martin's

5:31

Ferry, Ohio, right along the Ohio

5:33

River bordering West Virginia in the Ohio

5:35

Valley, and a word

5:37

spread around the entire Valley about a house in

5:39

Martin's Ferry that had this tree in front of

5:41

it. And when the moon would

5:44

shine down on it at night, it would cast

5:46

a shadow on the side of this house. And

5:49

everyone had a different idea of what the image was

5:51

on the side of the house. Some said it was

5:53

the face of a local girl

5:55

who was kidnapped years earlier, and

5:57

some said it was a Nazi general from World War II. to

6:00

and others claimed it was a Native

6:02

American man watching over the area that he used

6:04

to inhabit. There was a bunch of different theories.

6:08

So one night my mom and her friend decided that we were

6:10

all going to go see what all the talk was about. We

6:12

hopped in her car and we headed up

6:15

the river to Martins Ferry and found the

6:17

house with the tree. And

6:19

when we arrived there was this small mob

6:22

around the house all there to see this

6:24

shadow. But the woman who owned the house

6:26

was on the porch and had

6:29

the porch light on which prevented the shadow

6:31

from being seen on the house. It was

6:33

making the house bright and the shadow wasn't

6:35

able to be seen by the crowd. And

6:38

she's shouting at the crowd to like go home

6:40

and like leave us alone. We're going to call

6:42

the cops if everyone doesn't leave. And the

6:45

crowd shouting back to her saying just turn out the

6:47

light and like some light younger guys like I'm going

6:49

to bring my gun and shoot that light out. And

6:51

it's just a lot of back and forth continued

6:54

until my mom decided that nothing

6:57

that was going to happen there that night was worth staying

6:59

for. So we got back in the car and

7:01

we got out of there just to be safe. A

7:03

few days later though my mom chose me a

7:06

local paper. I can't remember which one it was.

7:08

There's like three papers. There was

7:10

either the Times leader, the intelligencer or

7:12

the wheeling news register. But

7:14

in the paper whichever one it was I

7:16

was young I don't know. The owners of

7:18

the house allowed a photographer to snap a photo

7:20

of the shadow and post it in the paper.

7:23

And we looked at the picture and

7:25

the shadow looked like a young girl with long

7:27

hair. And there was about as much detail as

7:29

I remember seeing in the image was like an

7:31

image of a girl. But talk of it being

7:33

a Nazi general or a Native American man seemed

7:35

to be pretty inaccurate from what I was seeing.

7:38

But it was pretty interesting how detailed the space

7:40

and the picture looked and the buzz that it

7:42

created around town. So a couple

7:44

weeks later we were in Ferry again in Martins Ferry. We

7:47

were there a lot to visit the library.

7:49

They had a pretty nice library that I spent a lot

7:51

of time in. And my mom was, so let's go

7:54

check out that house again. She seemed a little curious about

7:56

it and I was up for it. Sure, let's go see

7:58

the house again. So we went back

8:00

to that street and pulled up and the

8:03

family that lived there had cut the tree down. I

8:05

remember there was just like a stump or just part of the tree

8:07

left and the rest of the tree was gone. I

8:10

don't take that for what it's worth. I was pretty

8:12

young but like there was definitely, it's definitely cut

8:14

or severely trimmed like there was

8:16

no leaves left and no

8:18

leaves, no shadow. I guess they just had

8:20

enough. There's so much commotion because of the

8:22

shadow of this tree castle in the house. They didn't want any

8:25

part of it. They just got rid of it and

8:27

all the trouble that had brought them. And

8:29

I think about that shadow, the tree from time

8:31

to time, when it was coincidence or

8:34

maybe the image of the girl actually meant something to

8:36

the family down in the house. I

8:38

wonder who the first person was to notice the face

8:40

of the girl in the shadow or how a word

8:42

had even spread all over to the

8:44

point where a small mob had formed on their

8:47

property that night. I'm gonna have to

8:49

ask my mom about this next time I see her over

8:51

the holidays. Maybe she remembers a little more than I do

8:53

but yeah that's the weird phenomenon that I experienced as a

8:55

kid around my hometown. And I

8:57

guess I just want to know if any

8:59

similar situations like that might have occurred that

9:02

could be seen as supernatural or was

9:04

it just some weird overhyped coincidence that made a

9:06

little community get kind of nutty for a short

9:09

period of time. I

9:11

don't know. Thanks for taking the call. I really enjoyed the show and

9:13

have a good one. Thanks. Goodbye. Thank

9:18

you Mike. Now

9:20

that's what I'm talking about. A

9:23

ghostly face on the side of a house. Up

9:26

in town. That's

9:29

by definition to me is

9:32

a hometown legend. Now

9:36

I'd never heard of this story despite

9:38

growing up only about an hour away. But

9:41

then again I was only a few years old

9:44

when this took place. So

9:46

I likely wouldn't have caught it on the nightly

9:48

news. But

9:52

my dad used to drive through that area once a

9:54

week on his sales. Slash surface route.

9:57

So I asked my mom about this. him

10:00

about this legend and he mentioned that he'd

10:02

heard of it but was never

10:04

able to see it. Probably

10:08

because he was only there during the day.

10:11

But you know like Mike mentioned, it

10:14

was covered in the local paper

10:18

and thanks to Delaney we

10:20

got our hands on that info. In

10:24

fact, she managed to pull

10:26

up a few articles on this

10:28

mysterious face. And

10:30

here's the first one beautifully

10:33

read by my good friend and fellow

10:35

adventurer, David Flora. Martin's

10:40

fairy apparition attracts curious

10:42

crowds. It's too early

10:44

for Halloween but dozens of people have

10:47

been turning up to gaze at an

10:49

out-of-season apparition gracing a house on Walnut

10:51

Street. For the past few nights, Joe

10:53

Berlich of 700 and a

10:56

half Walnut Street has played host to

10:58

hordes of curious onlookers who show up

11:00

in his backyard to stare at what

11:02

they perceive as a stunning likeness of

11:04

a human face on the side of

11:06

the two-story home. It's a

11:08

trip, I'll tell you, Berlich says, hardly

11:11

concealing his excitement. I mean, have you

11:13

ever seen anything like that? The

11:16

face is apparently an illusion cast

11:18

by the pale glow of a

11:20

distant mercury light filtering through foliage

11:22

of a tree, but some of

11:24

the neighborhoods scoff at skeptics. One

11:27

man points out the face never moves even

11:30

when the wind blows the tree. Another

11:32

says the face may be a sign of

11:34

some tragedy that occurred on the site years

11:36

ago. The lab

11:39

blurb was taken from a June 25, 1985 article in the

11:41

Martin's Ferry

11:44

Times-Leader. And

11:47

as fun as the story is, it

11:51

really does sound like pareidolia to me. And

11:54

we've covered this visual cue several times.

12:00

or aren't familiar. This

12:02

is the science channel's take on

12:05

how it all works. It's

12:08

a strange phenomenon that's evolved over

12:10

the past few million years. Pareidolia.

12:13

And it happens to everyone. The

12:16

part of the brain that recognizes faces

12:18

is called the fusiform gyrus. It can

12:20

spot a face in just 130 milliseconds.

12:25

But anything with a face-like arrangement

12:27

can trigger it too. Which can

12:29

lead to some mistakes. How

12:32

does the brain do that? It's an

12:35

evolutionary survival tactic. If

12:37

a jogger in the woods happens to see

12:39

something that looks like the face of a

12:41

bear, she can run away. But

12:44

if the jogger didn't see a bear, and there

12:46

was one, she's breakfast.

12:51

Now, Mike was right. The tree

12:54

was cut down. And

12:56

I have the evidence. Right

12:58

here. Mr.

13:01

Flora. If you don't mind.

13:06

The ghostly image appearing on the side of the

13:08

Francis Berlach home at 700 and a half Walnut

13:10

Street has

13:12

faded away after the family cut the

13:14

branches of the two trees Wednesday afternoon.

13:18

A group of people, most of whom were

13:20

children, still continued to gather in the alley

13:22

behind the Berlach home Wednesday night waiting

13:24

for the ghost to come out. The

13:27

image of a human face had been

13:29

cast on the side of the home

13:31

Monday and Tuesday night luring curious onlookers

13:33

to the Berlach property. Police

13:36

were called both nights to break up the crowd.

13:39

The image was apparently caused by the

13:41

street lights or the moon filtering through

13:43

the foliage of the tree leaves. Several

13:46

theories were voiced by onlookers gathered at

13:48

the site for the past two days.

13:50

The ghost, not to mention the

13:52

Berlach family, may now rest

13:54

in peace. from

14:00

the Martins Ferry Time Leader as well, and

14:02

it was published on June 27th of 85. So

14:07

you see, no tree equals

14:09

no face, and that's

14:11

one way to deal with it. Well,

14:14

pareidolia or the paranormal, either

14:17

way, this story reminds me

14:19

of one of my all-time favorite news

14:21

clips, and one that seems

14:23

pretty fitting for this time of year.

14:27

They call it the Crichton-Lipper-Con, and

14:31

on March 14th, 2006, it

14:33

took an Alabama community by

14:36

storm, and

14:39

this was the news report that took the

14:41

internet by storm just

14:43

a few short days later, courtesy

14:47

of WPMI, NBC News

14:49

15 out of Pensacola,

14:51

Fort Weldon. Curiosity

14:54

leads to large crowds in Mobile's Crichton

14:56

community, many of you bringing binoculars, can

14:58

quarters, even camera phones to take pictures.

15:00

To me, it looks like a leprechaun

15:02

to me. I got to do a

15:04

look up in the tree. Who

15:07

else in the leprechaun say yes? Yes! Eyewitnesses

15:11

say the leprechaun only comes out

15:13

at night. If you shine a

15:15

light in its direction, it suddenly

15:17

disappears. I

15:21

just love how excited everyone is in this

15:23

video. In

15:25

the extended version, there are even a

15:27

few guys that suggest looking for the

15:29

creature's gold. And

15:32

you know this is how I imagine Martin's very

15:35

to be in June of 85,

15:38

an anxious crowd that's seen something

15:41

worth getting excited about. What

15:44

that something has? Well,

15:46

frankly, that's all up to you. Thank

15:50

you again, Mike, for kicking us off. What

15:53

such a fun story. Any

15:55

big thanks to David Flora for

15:57

lending his silky smooth voice. Now

16:00

be sure to check out Wanda, all of

16:02

his mini-podcast. Hysteria 51, quiz

16:05

quiz bang bang. And of

16:07

course, blurry photos podcast. And

16:11

at long long last. You

16:14

can catch him and myself in our long

16:16

long long awaited documentary film,

16:19

Shadows in the Desert, High Strangeness

16:21

in the Brago Triangle. The

16:24

film is currently streaming all sorts of places.

16:27

Go to Apple TV, Amazon

16:29

Prime, or bregotriangle.com to learn

16:32

more. And if

16:34

you're a Kickstarter backer, keep an eye

16:36

on your mailbox. Those

16:38

rewards are going out in the next couple of

16:40

days. And keep

16:42

an eye on your email as well. We'll

16:44

be sending you a link to view the

16:46

film shortly. If

16:49

we haven't already. Now

16:53

a huge thank you to everyone that

16:55

had a helping hand in making this

16:57

film a possibility. From the

16:59

crew to the Kickstarter backers. From

17:01

the locals down in the triangle. To

17:04

my friends and family and the folks

17:06

over at Freestyle. A

17:08

big thanks to all of you. We

17:11

worked extremely hard on this picture. So

17:14

please go check it out. I

17:17

have a feeling you're going to enjoy it. Now

17:23

that's enough stumping for me. Let's

17:27

get back to these hometown legends. Now

17:33

this next one was sent in by

17:35

Cassie. From my current home

17:38

of California. Hi

17:41

Derek. I've got one for you for hometown legends.

17:44

My name is Cassie and in the

17:46

late 90s my grandfather had purchased

17:49

some land and built a house across

17:51

the street from a graveyard. It was

17:53

on Parsons Trail in Tohunga, California.

17:55

It's kind of in the North

17:58

Valley. The graveyard is virtually D'Ogo

18:00

Cemetery and they had

18:02

told me as I lived there that there

18:05

was a big flood and people were finding

18:07

bodies in their yard and people were finding

18:09

glass eyes in their flower beds decades later.

18:11

It is perched up on a hill

18:14

and I heard your call for

18:16

hometown legends and actually found some

18:19

documents and photos of it. So

18:21

it is actually true finally after all these years

18:23

it's confirmed it. I will

18:25

send you an email and include a

18:27

picture of the crypt, the flood and

18:30

some news articles. Apparently they

18:32

did all slide down the hill and people were

18:34

finding freshly buried corpses in their

18:36

yard for a while. Another

18:39

episode that happened at the same place was in

18:41

the late 90s when I lived there. There

18:44

is a crypt that sits out on

18:46

the hill and apparently some goth teenagers

18:48

broke into the marble faces that covered

18:50

the crypt, pulled out a few folks

18:53

and took some photos with the sunglasses

18:55

and cigarettes in their mouth etc. I

18:58

was unable to find a news article on that

19:00

but I know it happened because I could see

19:02

the graveyard from my kitchen window. I hope

19:05

that helps for hometown legends that one is

19:07

definitely confirmed. Have a great one. Thanks. Thank

19:11

you Cassie. Now I've

19:14

linked to everything that Cassie sent over up

19:17

in the show notes. In

19:19

fact the show notes are filled to the brim with

19:21

all sorts of information about

19:24

all of tonight's stories. Be

19:26

sure to follow along as you listen for

19:29

the full monsters among us experience.

19:35

Now what is it with bodies and coffins

19:37

floating to the surface on

19:40

these year-end specials? I

19:43

swear we have at least one story

19:45

each finale that discusses that detail.

19:49

It's almost like it wouldn't be a hometown

19:51

legend episode. Well,

20:01

as luck would have it, this

20:03

isn't the only story I

20:05

have involving a cemetery to share with

20:08

you here this evening. There's

20:11

also this entry from Al up

20:13

there in New York. Hello

20:18

this story is for your

20:20

hometown legends episode. My

20:22

name is Al. I currently live in Ohio

20:24

but the story takes place when I lived back

20:26

in New York State. It's about

20:29

a very haunted cemetery near Troy,

20:31

New York in the town of

20:33

Brunswick. The cemetery was

20:35

originally called Forest Park Cemetery,

20:38

although it's sometimes called Pinewood

20:40

Cemetery now. It was

20:42

established in 1897, takes up about 20 acres. After

20:48

initial burials in the late 1800s, it went

20:50

bankrupt in 1914, then went back into business

20:56

if you will for a while, went bankrupt

20:58

again in 1930. A

21:01

record show about a thousand people were

21:03

buried in the cemetery. For

21:06

many decades it was mostly abandoned

21:08

with only one caretaker for a

21:10

big part of the 1900s. Some

21:14

of the legends include supposedly

21:16

being in a Life magazine

21:19

article as a gateway to help

21:22

in one of the most haunted places in the

21:24

country. I never could find that article

21:26

in Life I looked. That

21:29

had a mausoleum where you could

21:31

see the coffins. It

21:33

was a gateway to hell and was one

21:35

of the most haunted places in the country

21:37

with headless statues. Of course,

21:40

Satanists used it

21:42

all the time but those are

21:44

some common stories for many cemeteries.

21:47

My experience was in 1987 when

21:50

I went there as part of a

21:53

group of kids in my senior year

21:55

of high school that was abandoned, still

21:57

very overgrown, bushes, knee-high

21:59

grass. graves

22:01

and grave markers scattered in between.

22:03

So that first time we

22:05

went there were six of us seniors in

22:07

high school. We did see the mausoleum with

22:10

the broken walls. We didn't see coffins but

22:12

we did see where the coffins would go.

22:14

Had a couple beers that first time.

22:16

Acted cool for the girls with us but that's

22:18

about it. It wasn't until subsequent

22:21

trips we started to have some

22:23

experiences. The second time

22:25

my friend and I went back in the summer the

22:28

following year. It was tough to find

22:30

a spot where the cops went. We called right

22:32

away but we eventually got in there. Had a

22:35

very much different vibe. We thought

22:37

we saw shadows. We

22:39

scared ourselves. Fell into a hole which of course

22:41

we thought was a grave but

22:43

most likely was just where the

22:46

ground settled. Our first kind of strange

22:49

visit was the third visit about

22:51

a week later. As we were walking

22:53

through the cemetery at night we heard

22:56

crunching sounds. We looked down and then

22:58

a rectangular pattern that looked like a

23:00

grave. All the leaves were curling up

23:02

as if you were to hold your

23:04

palm out right and curl

23:06

your fingers and thumb inward. We

23:09

of course were brave and we ran screaming

23:11

from that cemetery again. What was

23:13

to be the last time we decided

23:15

to go we heard a voice from

23:18

over the radio that said don't go.

23:20

Which was really strange because the tape

23:22

deck of the radio had just been

23:24

removed and there was none in the car.

23:28

So we still decided to go on

23:30

the way there. The car broke down.

23:32

So were we saved by the supernatural?

23:34

Was it just a broken down 1980s

23:36

Ford Escort with too many miles? There's

23:39

quite a bit of details online if you look

23:41

up the cemetery. Love the

23:43

show. Hope you can use this for your show.

23:45

Take care. Come

23:48

on man. Not one single coffin

23:50

poking out of the ground. You're

23:53

dropping the ball you're out. But

23:56

what a great call about a very

23:59

spooky location. And

24:03

we too searched for the Life Magazine article,

24:06

but with no luck. So

24:08

if anyone out there happens to have access

24:10

to that, please do

24:12

let us know so we

24:14

can get it to Al. Because

24:17

I bet he would like to see it. As

24:20

would I and it seems, lots

24:22

of other people. People

24:24

have been looking for this Lifetime article for

24:26

quite a while, and oddly

24:29

it's yet to show up. Kind

24:32

of suspicious, isn't it? Well

24:36

anyway, if you are in that area

24:38

of New York, make a visit, see

24:41

how it makes you feel, and

24:44

thank you again Al for sharing

24:46

your hometown legend. Have

24:53

you ever edited the cost of all your

24:55

subscription services? Let me tell you, you

24:58

just might be shocked about how much you are paying

25:00

per year on those subscriptions. Then

25:03

when I signed up for Rocket Money, the

25:05

first thing they showed me was the total

25:07

amount I was paying for subscriptions per year.

25:09

It was way more than I'd realized. The

25:12

app makes it very easy to see how

25:15

many subscriptions you are paying for, the cost

25:17

of each one, and when that next charge

25:19

will drop. Rocket Money

25:21

even helped me cancel some of the subscriptions

25:23

that I no longer wanted. Rocket

25:26

Money is a personal finance app that helps

25:28

find and cancel your

25:30

un-muted subscriptions, monitors your

25:32

spend-in, and helps you lower your bills.

25:35

I've never been great at budgeting, but

25:37

the Rocket Money app makes keeping track

25:39

of what I demand so easy. It

25:42

flags frequent spend items, service

25:45

fees, and other things I probably

25:47

would have missed otherwise.

25:49

Rocket Money has over 5 million users and has

25:51

helped save its members an average of $720

25:54

a year, with over $500 million in-case subscriptions. So

26:00

stop wasting money on things you don't use. Cancel

26:03

your unwanted subscriptions

26:05

by going to

26:08

26:10

That's rocketmoney.com/ monsters

26:12

26:15

among us.

26:19

Now as always, supporting our sponsors

26:21

supports the show. So thank

26:23

you for listening. Now back

26:25

to that disembodied giggling. In

26:28

the back corner of your basement. I

26:30

hope that I'll be invited to... Well

26:33

we've actually already heard from our next

26:35

caller this evening. But

26:37

her first entry was pretty short. That

26:40

she's covering my own

26:42

stomping grounds. So

26:44

I'm gonna let this one slide. Please

26:47

welcome Cassie back

26:50

to the program. Hi

26:54

Derek, I have another one for

26:56

your hometown legends that I just

26:58

remembered from Hollywood, California. There's

27:00

the murder mansion in Los Feliz in

27:03

the Hollywood Hills. I

27:05

have actually been there on a little

27:07

outing with some girlfriends when we went to

27:09

the murder museum which is also in Hollywood and

27:11

should not be missed. So

27:13

there is a large mansion like house

27:15

up in the Hollywood Hills. It is

27:17

called the Hollywood Murder Mansion. It

27:20

is at 2475 Glendauer Place. And

27:24

in December of 1959

27:26

a cardiologist lived there with his

27:28

family and apparently had a

27:30

psychotic break. Took a ball peeped

27:33

hammer and murdered his wife and went

27:35

after his eldest daughter. She

27:37

escaped and his two youngest

27:39

children were left unharmed. Before

27:41

the police showed up he had gone into

27:43

his restroom and taken

27:46

some pills and some barbiturates,

27:49

possibly some acid and laid down next to

27:51

his wife. And by the

27:53

time medical help arrived he was already dead.

27:56

The house was then basically

27:58

auctioned off. and everything that

28:01

was in it at the time of the murder stayed

28:03

for over 50 years. There is

28:05

pictures on the internet still of the house

28:07

frozen in time that are available,

28:09

I think included a few in an email for

28:11

you with a link

28:13

that has a full rundown

28:16

of everything that went on with the

28:18

families, the house, and they allowed a

28:20

photographer in to catch before and

28:22

after photos, before they trashed out the house and

28:24

tried to put it on the market. Now

28:27

you can have it to your

28:29

very own for a measly four

28:31

million dollars on Zillow currently. So

28:34

I thought that was pretty awesome and the

28:36

pictures online are really great, it's an

28:38

absolute time capsule and I hope

28:40

you enjoy the story. Thanks, bye. You

28:44

know it might not sound like it but four

28:46

million dollars would be a steal for that neighborhood.

28:50

So what do you say guys? If we all

28:52

chip in just a little bit, maybe

28:55

we can set up a MAU Airbnb

28:57

or something. The

29:00

place is absolutely beautiful. Hell,

29:04

I'd live there. Ghosts or

29:06

not. Now

29:09

I've linked to a listing of this house where

29:12

the description tastelessly claims

29:15

this famed property is ready for its

29:17

new owner to bring it to life.

29:19

A poor choice

29:21

of words, don't you think? Considering

29:25

they call it the murder house. Well

29:31

having lived just down the hill from this

29:33

place for nearly a decade, of

29:35

course it was on my radar. But

29:37

I don't know a lot about the property. So

29:40

to explore the subject more, I

29:43

present this clip from four years ago on

29:46

behalf of my local TV station. K-Cal

29:49

CBS News 9 out

29:51

of Los Angeles. It

29:55

was December 1959. Police say Dr. Harold Perleson brutally...

30:00

killed his wife and tried to kill

30:02

his teenage daughter. His two youngest woke

30:04

up to the screams and were able

30:06

to run away. Dr. Parleson then took

30:08

acid and died. Sherry Lewis

30:11

was the family babysitter. She spoke to our

30:13

Stacy Butler back in 2010. She says the

30:15

next year the

30:17

Enriquez family bought the house. They

30:19

never lived there. They

30:22

visited the place. Lewis says decades later

30:24

the Parleson belongings were still in the

30:26

home. There are no furnishings other

30:28

than in the living room

30:31

furniture that belonged to the Parleson family.

30:34

The former neighborhood house painter describes what

30:36

he saw. Basically it's like a crime

30:38

scene that was frozen in time. You

30:40

could see sheets on the ground covering

30:42

things. You saw Christmas wrapping paper. There

30:45

was a Christmas tree. In 2016 the

30:47

home was sold to civil rights attorney Lisa Bloom.

30:49

I spoke to them over the phone. You know

30:52

I know there was this awful

30:54

tragedy one day in the 1950's but

30:56

you know I didn't

30:58

hold that against the house. And

31:01

they want people to know most of

31:03

the stories about the home are urban

31:05

legends. Most of them are not true.

31:07

So for example there's a picture of

31:10

a Christmas tree with a princess under

31:12

it and it's been there all

31:14

these years just like it was the day he

31:16

was murdered and it's a Jewish family. And

31:19

the owners are asking for three and a

31:21

half million dollars for this home and they're

31:23

asking for cash. Reporting from Los

31:25

Feliz I'm Chris Holms from... Okay.

31:29

She might be right. Perhaps the

31:31

family was Jewish and

31:33

had no Christmas tree. But

31:36

I have seen tons of footage that proves

31:38

the family's belongings were left to rots in

31:40

the home. At least up

31:43

until recently. I

31:45

believe the place is completely remodeled now.

31:49

Now I've linked to all sorts of stuff about this case

31:52

over in the show notes. monstersamonguspodcast.com

31:55

and click the show notes tab

31:57

to learn more. And

32:00

thank you again, Cassie, for sharing

32:03

your own town legend. Now,

32:33

what's the hometown legends episode?

32:37

Without a story about a

32:39

supposed witch? Joe

32:41

from Massachusetts. Let's

32:44

hear what you've got to offer. Hi,

32:49

Derek. Hi, listeners. My

32:51

name is Joe, and I've called

32:53

in before with a story from

32:55

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where I live.

32:58

And I heard you were looking for more hometown

33:00

legends. So I dug

33:02

up a couple of other

33:05

witch stories from the area that I thought

33:07

you might be able to use. So I'm

33:09

going to tell you about a pair of

33:11

witches, apparently, who were sisters who lived in

33:14

Cape Cod back in the 1600s. So

33:17

there's Hannah Screechum, who lived

33:20

off of Grand Island in Barnstable back in

33:22

the 1600s and apparently had... Well,

33:26

there's actually two versions of this one. So she

33:29

was, you know, classic witch, hunchback,

33:32

black cloak. Her laugh sounded like

33:34

the shrieking of gulls. So

33:37

apparently, because of just

33:40

her appearance and everything, the local townspeople

33:42

assumed that she was a witch. And

33:44

at one point, they

33:46

went out to her little

33:49

cabin to bring her in, I guess,

33:51

to try her as a witch. And

33:54

these big black dogs appeared out

33:56

of nowhere to defend her and

33:58

drove the people off. at least

34:00

temporarily. And then I guess a little

34:03

bit later they came back to get her. They brought

34:05

her in and Mogg

34:07

Justice kind of prevailed and they dragged her

34:09

out to a tree and hung

34:12

her immediately. And

34:14

according to the legend, that night

34:17

a pirate ship showed up on the shores

34:20

and they came ashore with their

34:22

pistols drawn and everything, cut down

34:24

her body and walked

34:26

away with it because apparently

34:29

it turned out that Hannah

34:31

Screechum was Captain Kidd's mother

34:33

and Captain Kidd came back to claim

34:36

her body and then buried her with

34:38

one of his treasure chests so that

34:40

her spirit would protect his treasure. So

34:43

that's one version of the story. The

34:45

other version is that she was actually

34:47

in league with pirates from

34:50

the beginning and all the different

34:52

pirates from the area would come and

34:55

find Hannah Screechum and

34:57

she would help them bury their

34:59

treasure. And when they

35:01

dug the pit to put the

35:03

treasure in, the Captain would be

35:06

there with some unlucky

35:08

other pirate from the ship

35:10

and after they dug the

35:13

hole and put the treasure

35:15

in, Hannah would push the

35:18

unwitting accomplice into the hole

35:20

and they would be buried with the

35:22

treasure as well and

35:24

then the Captain would pay her

35:27

and return to his ship and

35:29

the shipmates back out at sea

35:31

would hear her seagull-like laughing and

35:34

know that the deed had been

35:36

done. So kind of cool

35:39

that both stories at least have

35:41

her laughing like a gull and

35:43

involved in burying pirate treasure. So

35:45

I really enjoyed that one and

35:47

apparently she had a sister named

35:50

Sarah Screechum and she lived over

35:52

in Mashpee which is

35:54

southwest of Barnsibole if you're familiar

35:56

with the Cape and

35:58

she lived in a cottage

36:01

near what's now called Witch Pond,

36:04

appropriately enough. And apparently

36:07

it was a dense forest back in the day

36:09

and she protected it and

36:11

prevented people from hunting in

36:14

the forest around her cottage. So

36:16

it was a very dense forest,

36:18

so dense that apparently like even

36:20

the full moonlight wouldn't shine through

36:23

the trees overhead. So she protected

36:25

this forest and apparently would roam

36:27

the forest in either the form

36:29

of a large black mare or

36:31

sometimes a beautiful young doe. And

36:34

apparently the hunters who would try to

36:36

steal her or you

36:39

know, encroach on her land and hunt,

36:41

they would sometimes come across this big mare

36:44

or this doe and fire on it and

36:46

their bullets would have no effect. So it

36:48

scared everybody off. But when

36:50

times were lean, people would still sometimes go

36:53

into her forest and like, you know, try

36:55

to get some game. And

36:57

apparently one such man was this

36:59

handsome hunter and Sarah fell in

37:01

love with him and tried to,

37:04

you know, seduce him or whatever. But he

37:06

was terrified because he knew her reputation as

37:08

a witch and kept refusing

37:11

her, kept refusing her. Finally he agreed to

37:13

meet her, but it had to be outside

37:15

of the forest because he was, you know,

37:17

scared of the witch. So

37:19

she agrees. She

37:22

leaves the forest and arrives at this

37:24

man's house in the form of the

37:26

huge black mare that she'd been known

37:28

to appear as in her forest. And

37:31

she's, you know, playfully scampering around the

37:33

man's house in the form

37:36

of this big black horse. And he's apparently

37:38

playing along with it at first. And you

37:40

know, she lets him

37:42

tie a bridle around her in

37:44

horse form and you know, he's

37:46

going along with it at first and then he ties

37:49

her up and then he

37:51

pulls out horseshoes and a hammer. So he

37:54

puts these three iron horseshoes on her

37:57

and apparently she doesn't make a noise,

37:59

doesn't protest. And then the

38:01

fourth horseshoe that he puts on her

38:03

foot is a silver horseshoe. She cries

38:06

out in pain. The hunter

38:08

goes to get his friends and be like,

38:10

hey, look, I caught the witch. But

38:12

when he returns, the mare is gone.

38:15

And apparently they later

38:17

find Sarah Screechum with a silver

38:20

horseshoe hammer to her hand. But

38:23

that didn't finish her off. And apparently

38:25

she kept on protecting her forest from

38:27

hunters. And this particular hunter, I guess,

38:29

never came back. But there

38:31

was another particularly nasty winter in

38:34

Massachusetts. And another

38:36

hunter desperate to get some

38:39

food for his family goes

38:41

into the woods around Witch

38:43

Pond. And this time,

38:45

because he had heard this story

38:48

about the silver horseshoes, he

38:50

brought along a silver bullet.

38:52

And while he's hunting, this

38:55

deer, this doe jumps out.

38:57

And stares him

38:59

down, defying it, almost taunting

39:01

him. So sure enough,

39:03

he loads up that silver bullet, fires,

39:06

hits the doe right in the heart. And

39:09

again, previously, people had seen this doe.

39:11

And it seemed impervious to bullets. But

39:13

apparently, just like a werewolf, she was

39:15

vulnerable to the silver bullet. And they

39:17

later found Sarah Screechum dead

39:19

in her cottage of a gunshot wound.

39:22

So those are my two witch stories,

39:25

Hana Screechum and Sarah Screechum. And I'm

39:27

from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. And

39:29

I do, I just want to say that I got

39:31

a lot of this information from the book, Haunted

39:33

Cape Cod and the Islands by Mark Jasper

39:36

and a New England folklore blog by Peter

39:38

Muse. So just to give credit

39:40

where credit is due. Hope you enjoy.

39:42

Thanks a lot. Bye. Thanks,

39:46

Joe. A laugh

39:48

that sounds like seagulls. What

39:51

a terrifying concept. And

39:55

I love the Captain Kidd connection as

39:57

well. Because I don't

39:59

talk about- Now

40:03

for those not familiar, Captain William Kidd

40:05

was a Scottish pirate in the mid

40:08

to late 17th century. He

40:11

was hanged in England in 1701. And

40:16

he's not a very treasured

40:18

Oak Island, Long Island, the

40:20

Thimble Islands, the Cockenoe Islands.

40:24

The dude loved islands. And

40:27

the other version of Jo's story is

40:30

very familiar to me. I've

40:32

heard a million versions of that exact tale.

40:35

It crazed woman on the outskirts of town,

40:38

transforming into a creature at night.

40:42

The only way she's discovered is because someone

40:44

slipped a collar on a spectral hound, shoddy

40:47

skin-walking witch, or in

40:49

this case, nailed a horseshoe to

40:51

someone's hand. And

40:54

then when she reverts back to her human

40:56

form, those injuries or

40:59

modifications become blatantly

41:01

obvious, giving

41:03

her her secret away. Now

41:07

regardless of whether I've heard similar or not,

41:09

I love

41:12

a good pirate story. So

41:14

thank you again, Jo, for taking the

41:16

time to share your local

41:18

swashbuckling lore. All

41:23

from one coast to another. This

41:26

next one comes to us from Troy up

41:30

in Washington State. Hey,

41:35

my name's Troy. I'm calling

41:38

from Yakima, Washington, but it's

41:40

the hometown legend from Moses

41:42

Lake, Washington. For

41:44

a long time as a kid, there

41:46

was stories among all us kids who

41:48

lived down on the lake on the

41:50

water that there was an alligator in

41:52

that lake, and no one quite knows

41:55

where that legend originates. We

41:57

didn't really quite take it seriously, but... Last

42:00

year I came across this book, Strange

42:03

Monsters of the Pacific Northwest by

42:05

Michael Newton. And lo and

42:08

behold, to my surprise, I come

42:10

across this, they

42:12

have a chapter on make monsters and it has Moses

42:14

Lake Washington from 1992, where

42:17

it states that on April 15th

42:20

of that year, a witness

42:22

Cliff Johnson saw a large

42:24

reptile-like animal swimming near Mars

42:27

Island. The creature raised its

42:29

head in a snake-like fashion. It

42:31

was about the size of a human, the

42:33

guy said, and it was never seen again.

42:37

And the interesting thing is Mars Island

42:39

is one of the islands that

42:41

I kind of live next to. There's kind

42:44

of these large marshy islands middle

42:46

of the lake. And last

42:49

year, kind of going on the theme of

42:51

weird things in the lake, my friend without

42:54

carp fishing with one of his buddies, because

42:57

we have a pretty good carp fishery in that lake,

42:59

and they fought something for,

43:02

I think they said it was 30 minutes, and it

43:04

ended up being a landlocked

43:06

white sturgeon that had escaped

43:08

from fish and wildlife captivity

43:11

15, 20 years before. So, you know,

43:14

it's one of those sayings where you

43:16

never quite know what's in your local body of water.

43:20

Anyway, love the show, keep up

43:22

the good work. Thank you, Troy. Now,

43:25

I'm a big fan of water monster stories

43:28

as well. Nessie and Champ were two of the

43:31

creatures that pulled me

43:33

into cryptozoology early on in my

43:35

childhood. So I was

43:37

awfully excited to share Troy's entry. Now,

43:41

a couple of obvious things to get out of

43:45

the way here. Troy mentioned the fish known as a carp. Well,

43:51

it's a good suspect to start

43:53

with, because according to our research, The

43:56

largest carp ever caught in the state of

43:58

Water. Was

44:01

like moses. And

44:04

weighed in at a whopping forty nine

44:06

and a half pounds. A

44:09

day of those things. pretty monstrous,

44:11

torpedoing through the water, Into

44:15

a also mentioned be might

44:18

Sturgis. The largest

44:20

freshwater fish in North America. On

44:23

average, they grow to be about forty five

44:25

inches. But historically. They've

44:28

been reported to the east. So.

44:32

A literal Blake. And

44:37

running across something like that? When.

44:40

One hundred percent guarantee to make

44:42

me when the side think that's.

44:45

Unexplained. Snow

44:51

mostly. We were able to confirm the

44:53

stores choice shared about school if Johnson

44:55

said. Although or

44:57

sources day the experience to Nineteen

45:00

Eighty Two. Spells,

45:04

Linda that. We didn't

45:06

find a lot of information. Other.

45:10

Than this confirmed sighting. The

45:12

books and only described as

45:14

a dinosaur. Like object.

45:19

Several. People have reported seeing the legendary

45:21

like new monster cruising through the while

45:23

others of Moses Lake confuse the their

45:26

It may be disappointed to discover that

45:28

it's not the monster of legends with

45:30

another man to be built by Moses

45:32

Lake. Man makes Hansen make handsome built

45:34

the Moses Lake well that was the

45:36

improving the waters back in October. Speed

45:39

building these floats for a parade that

45:41

will be taking place on the Saturday

45:43

of Labor Day weekend. One of the

45:45

things that. Nobody

45:47

ever sees with girls. always

45:50

imagines i guess is as

45:52

the loch ness monsters illness

45:54

why we've decided to move

45:56

so this is a trial

45:58

promoting We wanted to have

46:02

the whale and then the Loch Ness Monster

46:04

and we're in the process of building the

46:07

Liberty Island. With Statue of

46:09

Liberty on it. Now

46:14

that thing is terrifying for

46:16

all the wrong reasons. And

46:19

please tell me that there's no one inside of

46:21

that monstrosity. It

46:23

does not look safe. Of

46:27

course you can hit up the show

46:29

notes at monstersmovuspodcast.com to take a look. And

46:32

I can tell you I'm certainly not

46:34

getting in that thing. Now

46:39

from what I gather there's only a few sightings of

46:41

this supposed creature. Perhaps

46:43

even only one sighting. But

46:47

it is worth noting that the location of

46:49

the lake is peculiar. There

46:51

is a long held belief that there

46:53

is a zone, a belt if you

46:55

will, where a majority of

46:57

these creatures are reported. It

47:01

was likely the author and researcher Ivan

47:03

T. Sanderson that first coined the notion.

47:07

But it sort of checks out. Because

47:10

Loch Ness, the Lake Champlain, the

47:12

Lake Okanagan, and the lesser

47:14

known creatures such as Lake Erie's

47:16

Passy, the Flathead Lake Monster,

47:19

and the Columbia River's Colossal Clod. They

47:22

all fall within this hypothetical

47:25

belt that Sanderson observed. I

47:28

believe it's around the 50th parallel. But

47:33

I warn you to take all of that with a grain

47:35

of salt. Because there are

47:37

plenty of water monster stories that don't fall

47:40

within those coordinates. But

47:42

not only are the creatures in this belt common

47:44

and similar in description. The

47:47

lakes in which they are said to inhabit are

47:50

awfully similar as well. Deep,

47:54

dark, and narrow.

47:59

So Take a look at this. that for what it's worth, And

48:02

a big thanks to get your eye. For

48:05

sharing. Few. Features. Others

48:18

on earth really enjoy the

48:20

good old treasure hunt. Eight

48:24

in Canada. Hi

48:34

this is Hayden Drama as Tramps

48:36

Sketch One Canada. Guess it's not

48:38

really more go story aura or

48:41

supernatural sort of thing, but catabolic

48:43

something for your home town stuff,

48:45

but it's more of a family

48:48

legend if anything, For. Me

48:50

is somewhat true story of my

48:52

I. Believe my great

48:54

great grandfather. We we worked on

48:56

a farm in Montana and he

48:59

was with his family and his

49:01

wife and is like five kids

49:03

and he was out there and

49:05

he got into his argument with

49:07

this guy by all know what

49:09

it's about. I've heard three different

49:12

versions of it is over an

49:14

affair over some slumber or land

49:16

dispute. I'm not totally sure which

49:18

one it was but ended up

49:20

with my great great grandfather being

49:22

murdered. Right in front of his family

49:25

was pretty bad shot several times as hard as

49:27

family. The. Guy ran off, they

49:29

went to the sheriff, rounded up a

49:32

posse, tracked him down, drag them back

49:34

and he went to court. And

49:37

use tried. and the defense even said

49:39

that it's impossible for my great great

49:41

grandmother to have possibly indentified him as

49:44

the killer is too far away. So.

49:46

the prosecutor went to the back to

49:49

the court and went to an entire

49:51

deck of us a brand new fresh

49:53

decks cards that freshly shuffled right in

49:55

front of everyone to see freshly shuffled

49:57

and then that i got every single

50:00

one right so the guy was convicted he

50:02

was sentenced to hang which was

50:04

then committed to life and the

50:07

governor commuted his sentence and then

50:09

he was actually eventually formally pardoned

50:11

for murdering my great-great-grandpa so no

50:14

justice there but the guy felt

50:16

guilty left in his will

50:18

to the descendants of the man he

50:20

murdered a gold mine and

50:23

my great-uncle was furious and called

50:25

it blood money and it was

50:27

like Judas is silver, compared to

50:29

Judas 13 pieces of silver and

50:31

threw the map into to

50:33

the gold mine into the fireplace

50:37

and we have no idea where

50:39

the gold mines today some of

50:41

my distant cousins have

50:43

gone out looking for it but

50:46

no one's ever found this gold

50:48

mine so yeah that's my lost

50:50

family treasure story thank

50:53

you love the show thank

50:55

you goodbye thank

50:57

you aiden what

50:59

a tragic story and

51:03

sometimes it really seems like there is

51:05

no justice in this world I

51:08

guess it's been that way for a long time but

51:12

I do have a bit of advice for you aiden

51:15

that just might help you find this mysterious

51:17

mine if you

51:19

know the murderer's name you can

51:22

look up old claim maps to discover minds that

51:24

he owned at one time then

51:26

all you have to do is trace the sale

51:28

or transfer of each of those until

51:30

you reach a dead end that

51:34

likely is your claim then

51:37

of course you can use lidar scans to find

51:40

the actual location of the mine itself

51:44

assuming you or your family can still

51:46

gain access to it and

51:49

I'm guessing that a good part of this could be

51:52

done online believe it or not now

51:56

if you do find it though I imagine

51:58

the courts would have a field day with

52:00

it, there's a good chance that

52:03

the property if left unclaimed, cycled

52:05

back to the county or even the state.

52:10

Like I said, sometimes

52:12

there's just no justice in

52:14

the world. Well

52:18

I hope you or your family find it Hayden,

52:21

and if you do, I don't need any of

52:23

it, but I do want to hear

52:25

the story of how you found it. Thank

52:29

you again for sharing

52:32

that entry. Of

52:36

course if you ended up using my technique

52:38

to find the mine, tossing me

52:40

a gold bar or two might

52:42

be the right thing to do. Now

52:45

folks before we move on here, a

52:47

quick reminder to visit our merchandise shop. A

52:51

53:10

monstersamonguspodcast.com forward

53:12

slash shop. Now

53:19

I was surprised to hear this next entry,

53:21

because it was sort of one of

53:23

my hometown legends growing up. Spencer

53:27

from Ohio. Welcome

53:30

to the show. Hi

53:33

Derek, this is Spencer from Deshocton, Ohio,

53:36

a small town not too far from

53:38

where you grew up. I'm

53:40

calling for the hometown legend section.

53:43

I've been wanting to call in, I wasn't sure which

53:45

one to use, but we have this local legend

53:48

about a woman named Mary Stockham.

53:51

And apparently she was a

53:53

witch and was murdered and

53:55

her head was cut off

53:57

and hid somewhere else, you know, this day.

54:00

her Bloody Mary type story but she

54:03

has a grave out in the

54:05

middle of the country where people like to go and

54:07

party and people claim to

54:09

have seen the headless figure wandering out

54:11

there and I have a friend who

54:13

says he's related to her he won't

54:16

talk about it too much but I

54:18

just find it interesting that a lot of people believe

54:20

that and put a lot of stock in around here

54:22

so that's my story and thanks

54:25

for listening and I hope you can use this

54:27

love the show and have a good day. Thank

54:31

You Spencer. Not

54:33

far indeed literally

54:36

right down the road from the tiny town that

54:38

I grew up near and

54:40

I'd heard of Mary Stuckham before and

54:43

I swear that I covered her here

54:45

on the show before although

54:48

I can't find any of that info

54:50

in my notes. So

54:54

instead of diving deep on her legend I

54:57

will instead use this opportunity to

55:00

share my very own hometown

55:02

legend. Now

55:08

I was born in and grew up near

55:10

a small town named Cambridge,

55:12

Ohio. If

55:14

you've taken I-70 East or West through

55:17

the state or I-77 North

55:19

and South you've

55:21

been there. It's where

55:23

the two major interstates connect. Well

55:27

before those major their affairs were developed

55:30

another national route to connect to

55:32

Cambridge to the outside world.

55:36

They called it the main street

55:38

of America or

55:41

the national road. Today

55:43

it's widely known as US

55:46

Route 40. Commissioned

55:49

by Thomas Jefferson himself the

55:51

national road was cutting-edge travel for

55:53

the day connecting the

55:56

eastern seaboard of the

55:58

wild lands of Pennsylvania. Ohio

56:01

and lands west and

56:03

it reached our area by the mid 1820s. A

56:08

narrow brick lined road that eventually

56:10

spanned from Maryland to

56:12

western Illinois. A

56:15

road with a ton of history and

56:19

tragedy. And

56:23

there's a place there on the old

56:25

national road just outside of Cambridge that

56:27

they call Deepcuz. Now

56:31

it's aptly named because when

56:33

the road was built through this area the

56:35

workers had to chisel a channel out of a

56:37

large hill in order to continue

56:39

on. Now

56:42

this channel was very narrow and

56:45

the walls were steep on both sides. It

56:48

felt very tight to drive through. I

56:52

have memories of that even as a child.

56:56

Yet it was still impressive considering it

56:58

was dug with picks and shovels.

57:03

Well this area is

57:06

where my hometown legend originates because

57:09

the construction crew would live in

57:11

camp right there along the road

57:14

and one of the workers was well known

57:17

for saving his pay. Rumors

57:19

were that he had it hidden in his

57:21

tent or even carried it on

57:23

him at all times. Well

57:26

eventually word got out to the wrong person

57:29

and the penny pincher met his end at

57:31

the end of his co-workers blade. Legend

57:34

says the poor man's head was

57:36

lopped clean off. Now

57:42

the brutes tossed the head aside, took

57:44

the stashed money and buried the

57:47

man's body under part of what is now

57:50

the national road. They

57:53

bricked them right up I suppose. And

57:57

I'd heard somewhere that you can still feel a bump when you

57:59

try to drive over it, supposedly

58:01

right where the body was buried.

58:05

Legend says that if you're driving through Deep Cut,

58:08

the lead at night, you

58:10

can still see the murdered man's headless body

58:13

stumbling in and out of

58:15

the lanes, searching

58:18

for his lost head. Now

58:24

sadly I learned brushing up on this subject that

58:26

Deep Cut has been regraded. I had tried to

58:30

drive through there any number of years and

58:32

it looks completely different now. Which

58:36

makes me wonder, did

58:38

they happen to stumble upon any

58:40

bodies while they were digging? And

58:43

if so, did

58:46

any of them happen to be missing

58:48

their head? Well

58:53

folks this next entry is another gem that

58:56

I had never heard of. Hunter

58:59

from the state of Idaho. Welcome

59:02

to the program. My

59:06

name is Hunter, originally from Washington,

59:08

currently in Idaho. And

59:10

I have a hometown legend to

59:12

add to your collection from where

59:14

I'm originally from. Back

59:16

in central Washington, there is

59:18

a ski resort named Mission Ridge.

59:21

It's named Mission Ridge because in 1942, a,

59:26

I want to say a B-52 out of

59:29

either Yakima or a base on the

59:31

underside of the Cascade Mountains was on

59:33

a training flight as the US

59:35

just recently entered World War II. Well,

59:38

the story goes that

59:40

this B-52, or whatever

59:43

plane it happened to be, crashed

59:45

into the side of around

59:48

Wenatchee Mountain, I believe, and

59:51

everyone died except for the tail

59:53

gunner, who ended up

59:56

with a propeller embedded halfway

59:58

through his torso. And

1:00:01

it is said that he roams

1:00:03

the mountains around Mission Ridge, trying

1:00:07

to find the rest of his crew and

1:00:10

with a propeller sticking through his body.

1:00:12

And there's stories of Boy

1:00:14

Scouts being terrified by the prop

1:00:16

man further down the mountain. And

1:00:19

I just figured that you could dig into

1:00:21

that as there's a little bit of history. They

1:00:24

recovered the wreckage of the plane from the

1:00:26

mountain. And now,

1:00:28

actually at the ski resort, there

1:00:31

is a chunk of the wing above,

1:00:33

quote unquote, bomber bowl that traditionally

1:00:35

you'd go up and you give

1:00:37

it a little love tap for

1:00:39

some good luck and to

1:00:41

remember the failed flight that crashed into

1:00:43

the side of the mountain. So

1:00:46

thought you'd be interested to hear that

1:00:48

little ghost story. And I

1:00:50

hope to hear it on a hometown legend in the

1:00:52

future. Thanks and keep up the good work.

1:00:57

Thank you for that entry. The

1:01:00

prop man. Now

1:01:03

my first thought here was this. The

1:01:05

propeller of a B-24 bomber is

1:01:07

huge. 11 foot 7 inches

1:01:11

according to a Google search. So

1:01:14

how exactly can something that big be

1:01:17

embedded in someone's chest? That

1:01:20

little detail almost ruined this for me. Just

1:01:23

until I read that it was a piece of the

1:01:25

propeller that cheered off and was

1:01:28

sent through the young man's abdomen. Now

1:01:31

the lady did some digging and the

1:01:33

details surrounding the crash are factual. And

1:01:37

she was also able to find this supposed

1:01:39

prop man encounter. A

1:01:41

sighting made by a boy scout at

1:01:43

a nearby summer camp. The

1:01:47

scout also sensed that something was traveling parallel

1:01:49

to his path at the

1:01:52

same speed and to his right. He

1:01:55

would stop and whatever it was. Wasn't

1:01:57

also stopped. and

1:02:00

whatever it was would also start. If

1:02:03

he went faster it would also go faster. If

1:02:05

he slowed down it would also

1:02:07

slow down. At this

1:02:09

time he was becoming frightened and started running as

1:02:11

fast as he could. Suddenly

1:02:14

he came to a break bend in the

1:02:16

trail and he knew he was

1:02:18

about to face his persimmer. His

1:02:20

heart beating and his lungs burning he turned

1:02:23

the corner to see something that could hardly

1:02:25

be described as human. Crash out

1:02:27

of the bushes, onto the trail.

1:02:31

20 feet in front of him, clad

1:02:33

in tattered army-issued coveralls, a

1:02:35

jagged shiny metal prop projecting from his

1:02:38

right side, barefoot, wild-eyed,

1:02:40

shaggy hair and beard,

1:02:43

stood what could only be the lost tail

1:02:45

gunner of Tomb Flight 22. For

1:02:50

a moment he stood frozen in fear,

1:02:52

looking into the haunted wild eyes of

1:02:54

his worst nightmare. Then

1:02:57

the specter of flight 22 vanished

1:03:00

into the forest. Now

1:03:05

you can read the full report by following the link

1:03:07

1:03:15

Now this is an awesome story and

1:03:18

an even better hometown legend and

1:03:20

we thank you again Hunter for sharing it here with

1:03:22

us. Well

1:03:28

let's sneak one more call in before I

1:03:31

have to go pay some bills.

1:03:45

And to do so we need to venture to

1:03:47

the state of Colorado where

1:03:49

Fisher is waiting with

1:03:51

his hometown legend. Hey

1:03:56

you're Derek and this is Fisher from

1:03:58

Salata, Colorado. I

1:04:01

am calling in with the hometown

1:04:04

legends for the season

1:04:06

finale. As I

1:04:08

mentioned, I live in Salida, Colorado, which

1:04:11

is a rural mountain town,

1:04:13

but it actually has

1:04:15

a really, really, like,

1:04:17

deep history going back to the

1:04:19

railroads and stuff of the 1800s.

1:04:23

And this was, this town is about

1:04:25

as wild west as you could get. There were,

1:04:28

I walked down streets where there was

1:04:30

cowboy gunfights every day, which

1:04:32

is super cool. And I live in a

1:04:34

very historic district there, which, believe me, I

1:04:36

have my own share of

1:04:38

stories there that I'd be happy to

1:04:41

share at some point. But I'm

1:04:43

just calling in to tell about

1:04:45

Salida a little bit and the

1:04:47

many, many hauntings that have

1:04:50

happened in our downtown area.

1:04:53

There's a couple of key places

1:04:56

that hauntings have occurred, allegedly.

1:05:00

I've only seen things in

1:05:03

one or two of the places, and then I

1:05:05

have family members who have seen

1:05:07

things in some of the places. There was

1:05:09

a pizza place that I grew up eating

1:05:11

at that my father did a mural for.

1:05:15

And this pizza place, before it became the

1:05:18

pizza place, was actually a funeral home. So

1:05:20

it's where they would take deceased bodies

1:05:23

and get them ready for funerals

1:05:25

and burial. But my

1:05:27

father, who was doing the painting

1:05:29

there, would often be there late at night.

1:05:33

And he just reported seeing some weird

1:05:35

things. He would be the

1:05:37

only one in the building and he'd

1:05:39

hear footsteps and stuff. I've also seen

1:05:41

photos of paranormal investigators who have gone

1:05:44

into that same building. And

1:05:46

there's some stuff that's pretty unbelievable. And

1:05:49

there's also, you know, like the

1:05:51

mountain male, which is across the

1:05:53

street from this place. There's

1:05:56

stories of hauntings that have

1:05:58

happened upstairs there. and one

1:06:01

time it was late at night

1:06:03

me and my buddy were walking around talking about ghosts

1:06:05

and stuff because as you do and

1:06:08

we look up and we didn't know then

1:06:10

but the top of the building is

1:06:13

to this day like sort

1:06:15

of uninhabited it has been refinished since it

1:06:17

used to be in disrepair but has been

1:06:19

refinished but we saw a white

1:06:22

glowing figure of a woman

1:06:24

in the window of this

1:06:26

building but yeah

1:06:28

so why does a cool weird old

1:06:31

mining town turn tourist town definitely look

1:06:33

into it if you have the time

1:06:36

well hey thanks love what you do here and I'd love to

1:06:38

call in more with some other stories

1:06:40

later I've got some good ones make

1:06:42

it easy Thank

1:06:46

You Fisher the

1:06:48

haunted Wild West goes down where

1:06:51

do I sign up it's another

1:06:54

subject right up my alley and

1:06:57

it sounds like something straight out of an episode of

1:06:59

Scooby-Doo anyway

1:07:03

I've been to Colorado many many

1:07:05

times but I've

1:07:07

never really had the opportunity to explore

1:07:10

any of its paranormal locations of

1:07:13

course not unless you count the Denver

1:07:15

International Airport I

1:07:20

think I need to make my way back to

1:07:22

that state so

1:07:25

thank you again for reminding me of that if

1:07:28

we're sharing your areas I'm

1:08:03

sorry. I'll

1:08:07

tell you what's happened. I

1:08:10

thought you were there. What?

1:08:13

What did you say?

1:08:16

I said, well, I figured out. But

1:08:20

it wasn't me. Oh

1:08:22

Andy, it's my friend. I

1:08:25

think I'm the one. I

1:08:28

think I'm the one. And

1:08:39

that was Bigfoot Sister by Michael J.

1:08:41

Dog. It reminds

1:08:43

me a lot of Captain Beavard. I

1:08:46

love it. Now you

1:08:48

can find the Spotify link in the shownouts. And

1:08:51

if you didn't know, we like

1:08:54

to showcase supernatural themed music on

1:08:56

our season finales. Just

1:08:59

our attempt to throw a little attention at the

1:09:01

unsung heroes keeping these legends

1:09:03

alive musically. Now

1:09:09

our next entry just might describe

1:09:11

Bigfoot Sister. Josh

1:09:13

from Oklahoma. Welcome

1:09:16

to the show. Alright,

1:09:21

I got a hometown legend, Josh,

1:09:24

from Morris, Oklahoma.

1:09:27

And our local hometown

1:09:29

legend, I don't have much information

1:09:32

on it yet. Hope

1:09:34

to get more, but it's

1:09:37

called Woolly Booger Road. And

1:09:39

my dad used to tell

1:09:42

me, they used to go out there drinking,

1:09:44

driving down this dirt road with their headlights

1:09:46

off looking for the Woolly

1:09:48

Booger, which nobody has ever said

1:09:50

what it was or what

1:09:53

it could be. To me, it's

1:09:55

most likely Bigfoot. I

1:09:57

did a Google Map search on a map.

1:10:00

and yeah, it's totally

1:10:02

a Squatch area.

1:10:04

But it's one I've wanted

1:10:06

to call in for a while, but I

1:10:09

haven't gotten around to doing any research on

1:10:11

it, really, but the

1:10:14

guy who started the legend

1:10:18

was the principal of my middle school,

1:10:20

which he's no longer with us, so

1:10:22

I can't get ahold of him now.

1:10:25

So that's kind of

1:10:27

a dead end road, but there's

1:10:31

a lot of stories of some Squatch out in

1:10:33

that area and I just

1:10:37

kind of thought it'd be a cool tale to tell, but

1:10:42

I do have a sighting of a Squatch that

1:10:45

took place at work around

1:10:47

2011, 2012. Me

1:10:51

and like 10 to 15 other

1:10:53

guys saw up on the hill there

1:10:59

was a dirt road. That dirt road couldn't

1:11:01

have been, I don't know,

1:11:03

seven feet wide for a

1:11:05

work truck to get up to because there was

1:11:07

a water tower on top of the hill and

1:11:10

we seen a dark

1:11:13

figure at the top of the hill pace

1:11:15

him back and forth on that street and

1:11:18

he was way taller than

1:11:20

the road was wide. He had

1:11:22

to have been at least eight to 10 foot tall.

1:11:26

While I was working, I had guys watching out

1:11:28

the back door, even an eye

1:11:30

on it, making sure it was still there

1:11:32

and yeah, he was up there for, I

1:11:35

don't know, almost eight

1:11:37

hours and it

1:11:39

was a clear summer day on

1:11:42

top of a good hill about

1:11:45

Glenpool, Sipulpa, Oklahoma area

1:11:49

right off of Highway 51 and

1:11:51

81st Street, but yeah, that's

1:11:54

what I got. Sorry,

1:11:56

I couldn't add more details, but I like

1:11:59

to call it in. Thank

1:12:02

you Josh. Willie

1:12:04

Booker Roud. Unfortunately

1:12:06

we weren't able to find it

1:12:08

or any lore on it, so

1:12:11

I'm assuming this must be one of those

1:12:13

hyper-local legends. Something

1:12:15

only known in a small county or

1:12:17

township. But

1:12:20

hey, Oklahoma is well known

1:12:22

for Sasquatch sightings. There's

1:12:24

even a research area out there

1:12:27

dedicated to discovering these

1:12:29

elusive creatures. And

1:12:33

speaking of the Willie Booker, we

1:12:36

didn't find anything about an Oklahoma

1:12:38

Willie Booker per se, but

1:12:41

we did find an encounter from North Carolina.

1:12:44

Now if you're interested I've linked to the article in

1:12:46

the show notes. Read

1:12:48

it in preparation for next week's

1:12:50

episode because we cover

1:12:52

the North Carolina Bigfoot and part

1:12:55

two of this episode. You

1:12:58

heard that right? I have so many calls

1:13:00

that I decided to do a part

1:13:02

two, so be sure to tune

1:13:04

in next week to hear the second

1:13:06

half of this season ending special. But

1:13:10

don't go away just yet. There's

1:13:12

plenty more of this episode to go. Beginning

1:13:15

with Dave down there in

1:13:18

Texas. Hey,

1:13:20

Derek. This is Dave from Texas for

1:13:23

Hometown Legends. Went

1:13:26

to college in Reno, Nevada. And

1:13:28

out of there, there is a kind of

1:13:31

hometown legend about a

1:13:33

skinwalker ranch that is

1:13:36

actually like literally right in the

1:13:38

middle of the city. It's called the

1:13:40

Farahi Farms. And this

1:13:42

is like an old family farm. Like I said, it's literally

1:13:44

in the middle of the, I mean like the

1:13:47

north end of the airport runway is

1:13:49

like right there. They

1:13:52

have corn, you know, alfalfa fields, all that

1:13:54

stuff. They do like a pumpkin patch in

1:13:56

the fall and like a corn maze and

1:13:58

stuff like that. kind

1:14:00

of a little attraction to the local area. But

1:14:03

as legend goes, there

1:14:06

is a woman, I

1:14:08

believe, from the Paiute Native American

1:14:10

tribe that was buried somewhere on

1:14:12

that land. And she has some

1:14:15

sort of significance.

1:14:17

Don't know, you know, exactly what that

1:14:19

is. I think the significance around

1:14:22

this woman is open to interpretation and kind of

1:14:24

who you ask. But apparently the skin

1:14:27

walker on the ranch is

1:14:30

more or less protecting that grave. Like they

1:14:32

don't want the body exhumed

1:14:34

or dug up or whatever.

1:14:36

I think they found other graves on

1:14:39

the farm throughout the years, Native American

1:14:41

graves. The legend has it this skin

1:14:43

walker is there to protect that

1:14:46

particular burial site. And

1:14:48

you know, there's odd reports of seeing

1:14:50

weird stuff out there, deer that aren't

1:14:52

quite dear, people

1:14:54

that run away. And when

1:14:57

you get a better look, it's just a coyote

1:14:59

running away. That kind of stuff. The owner

1:15:01

of the farm has a pretty cool

1:15:03

trail camera picture of what appears to

1:15:05

be like a full body apparition on

1:15:08

one of the trails in the farm. I don't

1:15:10

really believe in all the ghost stuff unless they

1:15:12

quit making them back in like the 50s or

1:15:15

something because every ghost is described as

1:15:17

a person from like the 20s, 30s, 40s or

1:15:19

50s. Like where's all the

1:15:21

flat brim? Who do you think the

1:15:23

dazzled jeans, sneakers, ghosts, where are those

1:15:26

at? But

1:15:28

anyway, yeah, kind of an interesting hometown legend from

1:15:30

the biggest little city in the world. Thanks, Eric.

1:15:32

Have a good one. Bye. Thank

1:15:37

you, Dave. How

1:15:39

about that? Another skin

1:15:42

walker ranch-esque location. Unmarked

1:15:45

graves, shapeshifters, not

1:15:47

deer, skin walkers and

1:15:49

apparitions. There seems to

1:15:52

be a ton of activity at this

1:15:54

location. And

1:15:56

again, this is why I love doing these hometown

1:15:58

legend episodes. You

1:16:01

uncover all sorts of cool places that

1:16:03

most of us have never heard of.

1:16:07

And this is another that was not on

1:16:09

my radar, even though I've

1:16:11

been to Reno and flew in and out of its

1:16:13

airport. So if what Dave says

1:16:15

is correct, I flew right over it. Now

1:16:19

I'm going to try to circle back on this one

1:16:21

in a future episode. And

1:16:23

if you're listening and you have additional info for

1:16:25

me, send it on in.

1:16:29

Let's get to the bottom of the skinwalkers

1:16:32

and Ferrari forms. Thank

1:16:35

you again, Dave, for sharing

1:16:37

your call. I'll

1:16:41

admit that's not a very intimidating name

1:16:43

for a haunted farm. But

1:16:46

hopefully this next one from Trey in

1:16:48

Utah will better deliver on its name.

1:16:52

Trey, welcome to the

1:16:54

show. Hey

1:16:57

Derek. This is Trey from

1:16:59

Utah. So I'm calling

1:17:01

in with my hometown legend from

1:17:03

Utah. So

1:17:05

legend has it that if

1:17:07

you were driving alone at night through Skull

1:17:09

Valley, which is around the

1:17:12

middle of Utah, you're going to have

1:17:14

a really strong chance of seeing these things called

1:17:16

the Skull Valley lights. So

1:17:18

as you're driving through the dark and the

1:17:20

night of Skull Valley, a car

1:17:23

will come up behind you and start flashing their

1:17:25

lights at you. And after

1:17:27

so long of flashing their bright at you

1:17:29

from behind and so on and

1:17:31

so forth, the car will eventually

1:17:33

pull around you to pass. And

1:17:35

when it gets side by side with you, you'll see

1:17:38

that the lights are actually the eyes of a demon

1:17:40

and the demon will ask you to sell him your

1:17:42

soul, which you

1:17:44

probably shouldn't do. And I

1:17:46

haven't driven through Skull Valley. I'd rather not. From

1:17:49

hearing that story, I make a way to actually

1:17:51

avoid it. But what's

1:17:54

actually sort of fun about this story is

1:17:56

Skull Valley is close to the Dugway Proving

1:17:58

Grounds, which has a lot

1:18:00

of urban legends in and of itself of

1:18:02

like A-lys and UFOs and things like that.

1:18:05

And you know a lot of people call it Utah's Area 51. But

1:18:09

yeah, Scola Valley Lights, one of

1:18:11

my favorite hometown legends from Utah.

1:18:14

I will not make my way down there just to

1:18:16

save my soul, but I thought it was

1:18:18

creepy. I think it's fun and I just wanted to call

1:18:20

in with that. So yeah, hope you enjoy.

1:18:23

Thanks for the show. Thank you, sir. Yeah.

1:18:29

Dugway Proving Grounds. You

1:18:31

know they also call that place Area 52. And

1:18:35

rumor is it's the real operation,

1:18:37

whereas Area 51 is now more

1:18:39

of a diversion than anything else.

1:18:43

And there are some wild claims that have come out

1:18:45

of Dugway in these rounding area.

1:18:50

In fact, this is what Bill Burns of

1:18:52

UFO Hunters had to say about

1:18:54

the base. Dugway

1:18:56

Proving Grounds is the fourth

1:18:58

largest military base in the

1:19:00

US and has been a

1:19:02

home for testing chemical, biological

1:19:04

and radiological weapons since 1942.

1:19:08

The base is surrounded by mountains

1:19:10

on three sides with

1:19:12

heavily restricted airspace over the

1:19:14

base reaching all the way

1:19:17

up even beyond the Earth's

1:19:19

atmosphere. The area is larger than the

1:19:21

entire state of Rhode Island and abuts

1:19:23

the Utah Test and Training Range. Within

1:19:26

the past 20 years, the area's runway

1:19:28

has been retrofitted to allow the space

1:19:31

shuttle to land. In

1:19:33

addition to its military clients, Dugway

1:19:36

is the home of defense

1:19:38

contractors working on alleged black

1:19:40

budget projects. So,

1:19:43

Trey, given the proximity

1:19:45

you're probably right. There's

1:19:47

no telling what these lights actually are. But

1:19:51

I'm guessing that you're a whole lot better

1:19:53

off not finding out.

1:19:57

Thank you again for sharing the

1:19:59

entry. Now

1:20:07

folks, don't forget if you have a story you would like

1:20:10

to share here on the show. Call

1:20:12

our hotline at 888-608-NIGHT. That's

1:20:14

888-608-NIGHT. And

1:20:20

don't forget, I'm still looking for calls

1:20:22

from Government Worker. If

1:20:24

you call one of those in, be sure to

1:20:26

mention Government Workers early in the call so

1:20:29

I can plug it out and bump

1:20:31

you up to the front of the line. Now

1:20:38

if you were to look for a cost, where

1:20:41

in the United States would you

1:20:43

start? If your

1:20:45

answer was the oldest non-native city

1:20:48

in the country, I'd

1:20:50

think you were on to something. Patrick

1:20:53

from Florida, let's

1:20:56

hear your hometown legend. Hey

1:21:02

Derek, this is Patrick calling from

1:21:04

Mendocino, California. This is for

1:21:07

the hometown legends. Recently

1:21:10

visited my home state, Florida. The

1:21:13

wife and I took son to family

1:21:15

reunion there and we did all the

1:21:18

Florida stuff, took the kids to Disney

1:21:20

with my sisters and their kids. But

1:21:23

the first couple nights we stayed in St.

1:21:25

Augustine and we ended up

1:21:27

visiting the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Prior

1:21:29

to going there, I hadn't mentioned my son or

1:21:32

my nephews or anything about it being haunted or

1:21:34

anything. I knew that. My sisters knew

1:21:36

that. My wife knew that. But when we were

1:21:38

there, we were going up to the

1:21:40

top of the lighthouse and my son got a

1:21:42

little spooked, which isn't out of the ordinary. It

1:21:45

was dark. It was at night. So we didn't make

1:21:47

him go all the way to the top, you know, comforted

1:21:49

him because he was a little spooked out. He didn't really

1:21:51

say about what. But then we went across

1:21:53

the way to the lighthouse keeper's

1:21:56

quarters and we're looking around,

1:21:58

doing the tour, reading a little plaque. about stuff

1:22:00

and we were in the basement and my son was

1:22:02

over in the corner looking at a plaque and I

1:22:04

was across the room and he

1:22:07

kind of comes running over to me and he was

1:22:09

like hey dad, dad, were you just

1:22:11

saying, were you just talking to me? And I was

1:22:13

like no, what do you mean?

1:22:15

I wasn't talking to you and he was

1:22:18

like were you saying something to me? And I was like no, I was like

1:22:20

would you hear? And he said,

1:22:22

I heard somebody behind me going hey, hey,

1:22:26

hey. And I was like no,

1:22:28

I didn't say that and it was the way he was

1:22:30

saying it and I could tell he was spooked and

1:22:33

so I told him I didn't say that

1:22:35

but it was okay, you know, kind of

1:22:37

carried on toward and finished up and

1:22:39

then afterwards he also said that he saw a

1:22:42

shadowy foot step out from a doorway which I

1:22:44

don't know if he actually saw that or if

1:22:46

he was making it up but the way he

1:22:48

was talking about hearing the voice behind him when

1:22:51

he was looking at the plaque was definitely I

1:22:53

could tell something happened the way he was telling

1:22:55

me at least he thought something did and

1:22:58

afterwards I kind of like looked up

1:23:01

the phenomena of what usually is seen

1:23:03

in the lighthouse and they definitely

1:23:05

get a lot of weird footsteps

1:23:08

and footprints and disembodied

1:23:10

voices and in the basement is

1:23:12

where they claim a lot of this

1:23:14

stuff goes on. So it's just kind

1:23:16

of a quick little story. It

1:23:18

just happened recently when we went right after

1:23:20

Christmas we were down there. Yeah

1:23:23

it's a really cool lighthouse if anybody is in

1:23:25

the area I highly recommend checking it out. We

1:23:27

love lighthouses and it's a really cool one. It's

1:23:30

really big but I just thought that was interesting

1:23:32

because my son had no prior knowledge in that

1:23:34

and I could tell he was spooked. But

1:23:37

anyways, thanks Derek. Love what

1:23:39

you do. I'll probably be

1:23:41

calling back with a few other stories. Alright

1:23:43

bye. Thank

1:23:46

you Patrick. You

1:23:49

know that's a cool area. I

1:23:51

have a cousin that lives in St. Augustine and

1:23:54

I've been down there a few times. Never

1:23:57

to the lighthouse though. Certainly

1:24:00

on my bucket list. Especially

1:24:02

after that ghost hunters video from some

1:24:04

20 years ago. I

1:24:07

have no idea if it's real or not, but

1:24:09

it's creepy as all get out. It's

1:24:12

a video shooting straight up the spiral

1:24:14

staircase. Then suddenly a

1:24:16

dark figure leans over the top rail. Now

1:24:20

the kicker here was that the lighthouse was

1:24:22

supposed to be empty at the time. Making

1:24:25

this video significant.

1:24:29

I posted a link in the show notes. Go take

1:24:31

a look for yourself. But

1:24:33

the truth is there are a

1:24:35

number of spirits that haunt the lighthouse down there.

1:24:39

And for the local scoop, we

1:24:41

visit this clip from WJXT. News

1:24:44

4 out of Jacksonville.

1:24:48

Guests wander around these hallowed halls of the

1:24:50

St. Augustine Lighthouse. Now 148 years old.

1:24:55

Sammy Washburn, who gives dark of the

1:24:57

moon tours year round, says there

1:24:59

are other visitors among them. Ghosts.

1:25:03

Washburn says she's witnessed some of that

1:25:05

paranormal activity. Well, opening closed windows

1:25:07

when they aren't supposed to be open

1:25:09

or closed. That's a typical act of

1:25:12

this shadowy figure who Washburn says is

1:25:14

one of the more popular ghosts. It

1:25:17

might be a former lighthouse keeper. People

1:25:19

sometimes say they're struggling to climb to

1:25:21

the top of the lighthouse. And

1:25:23

then all of a sudden they'll feel like a hand

1:25:25

on their back, kind of guiding them

1:25:28

up to the top of the lighthouse. Washburn

1:25:30

credits that to this ghost, Maria Andrew,

1:25:32

who is dressed in white and is

1:25:34

one of the only ghosts she

1:25:36

says appears in full body apparition.

1:25:39

Maria was the wife of a keeper

1:25:41

of the old lighthouse who fell to

1:25:44

his death. Then there's Peter Rasmussen, one

1:25:46

of Washburn's favorite ghosts. He was the

1:25:48

longest serving lighthouse keeper, 23 years

1:25:50

on the job in the early 1900s. So

1:25:55

Patrick, I'd say that there's plenty of

1:25:57

fuel down there to infiltrate your son's

1:25:59

nightmares. And given

1:26:01

what I've seen and heard, he's

1:26:04

probably right to be a little spooked.

1:26:08

Thank you again Patrick for sharing your

1:26:10

home down legend. Now

1:26:15

folks, that's going to do it for this first half. For

You can find a link to the full song in

1:29:18

the shout outs. Now

1:29:22

folks, it's time for tonight's secret entry.

1:29:25

And I figure that we should end on

1:29:27

one of the creepiest locales that anyone could

1:29:29

imagine. An abandoned

1:29:31

fun park. Eric,

1:29:35

from Parts Unknown. Welcome

1:29:38

to tonight's show. Hi,

1:29:43

Derek. My name is Eric. And

1:29:45

this one is a brief hometown's

1:29:47

legend that takes place back in

1:29:49

my hometown of Wichita, Kansas. And

1:29:51

it mainly pertains to a

1:29:54

amusement park called Joyland, which operated

1:29:56

from 1950 to about 2004. and

1:30:00

then reopened briefly again in 2006. Yeah,

1:30:03

so when I was in middle school, this was kind

1:30:05

of our end of the year treat. We really get

1:30:07

to go out to Joyland and spend the day there

1:30:09

on, the two most notable

1:30:11

things out there, which were the roller

1:30:14

coaster and a thing called the wacky

1:30:16

shack. Now the roller coaster

1:30:18

was a small wooden roller coaster that

1:30:21

honestly it felt like it didn't pass safety

1:30:23

regulations. It was real rickety and it was

1:30:25

a lot of fun for us at that

1:30:27

age. And there was always a

1:30:29

rumor surrounding it that someone had been killed or

1:30:32

multiple people had been killed on the roller coaster

1:30:35

and doing some Googling today, it looks

1:30:37

like actually there was a park maintenance

1:30:40

worker who was struck by the cars

1:30:42

and killed. So that

1:30:44

one actually stands true, it seems like. And

1:30:46

so we always back then, yeah, when I

1:30:48

was young, there was always a rumor that

1:30:50

it was haunted. Same with

1:30:52

this other attraction called the wacky shack,

1:30:55

which was like a homemade spooky

1:30:57

house where you'd walk room

1:31:00

to room. And I just had vague memories of,

1:31:03

there was like a tinfoil room and then the

1:31:05

classic strobe light room. And then I think even

1:31:07

one where they had, bats on

1:31:09

strings dangling around and they would move

1:31:11

and things like that. But that

1:31:14

one actually also felt spooky

1:31:16

for other reasons, not just the goofy

1:31:18

attraction, but it was just a spooky

1:31:20

looking building, it was a spooky looking

1:31:23

place. And yeah, so that's

1:31:25

Joyland and Wichita. And if you wanna look it

1:31:27

up now, it's

1:31:29

been closed since 2006. So it's been closed for nearly 20 years.

1:31:32

And there's been a lot of homeless

1:31:34

and there's been a couple fires there

1:31:36

and even some groups tried to

1:31:38

reopen it, but that never got going, never got

1:31:40

on its feet. But yeah, I would highly encourage

1:31:42

you or your listeners to just look up Joyland

1:31:44

Wichita and you'll see the now

1:31:47

defunct wacky shack. Like half the letters have fallen

1:31:49

off, so it just says shack. And

1:31:51

there's piles of wood scraps, shrubs

1:31:54

growing everywhere and it's just kind of a

1:31:56

creepy looking vibe. So yeah, anyway, that's a

1:31:58

brief hometown legend I have. and big

1:32:00

fan of the show, make a podcast, keep

1:32:03

it up and take it easy. Alright. Thanks,

1:32:07

Eric. Now

1:32:10

there's a Santa Claus and Christmas themed theme

1:32:12

park just up the road here from us.

1:32:16

And that place set vegans for a

1:32:18

long, long time. Today

1:32:20

it's all redone. And it's

1:32:23

too expensive for me to visit. But

1:32:27

for years, that was a

1:32:29

creepy, creepy place. Now

1:32:33

another abandoned and possibly haunted amusement park

1:32:35

that comes to mind is

1:32:37

Shawnee Lake in West Virginia. But

1:32:41

we'll save that deep dive for another

1:32:43

time. For

1:32:45

now. Thank you again, Eric, for the phone

1:32:47

call. And thank you, listener,

1:32:50

for following along thus far. Now

1:32:54

for you folks waiting around for the Beyond, that

1:32:56

will be a stand alone episode. So

1:32:59

look forward to your podcatcher. And

So go ahead and give it a try. Maybe

1:33:21

I'll see you over there. Otherwise,

1:33:25

I'll be back here next week with the second installment.

1:33:29

So until then, keep

1:33:31

it spooky. And have

1:33:33

yourself a good night. you
