In 1999 in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr. Denis Mukwege founded the Panzi Hospital, a clinic specialized in gynecology and obstetrics. The main goal was to reduce maternal mortality. However, Panzi’s first patients weren’t pregnant women, but victims of sexual violence. Since then, Dr. Mukwege has helped over 80,000 patients that suffered rape in war, and for this work he was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2018. Daniel Obasi, for the Lavazza Calendar 2024, photographed a group of women of the Panzi Foundation - an organization created in order to support the Panzi Hospital: Dr. Neema Rukunghu and several sexual violence survivors that now have the opportunity to regain confidence in themselves.

Lavazza dedica il calendario 2024 all’importanza della collettività e del sapersi riconoscere come parte di un insieme: “More than us”, appunto. Al centro delle immagini che ci accompagnano nel nuovo anno c’è l’Africa, con la sua creatività e la voglia di futuro. In questo podcast conosciamo da vicino le storie dei tre fotografi che hanno lavorato ai 12 scatti: Thandiwe Muriu, Aart Verrips e Daniel Obasi. Seguendo ognuno la propria sensibilità, i tre artisti africani hanno interpretato i valori che da 20 anni guidano il lavoro di Fondazione Giuseppe e Pericle Lavazza: Responsability, Sustainability, Innovation e Inspiration. Le immagini sono quelle di un'Africa lontana dagli stereotipi e unita nell'idea che solo insieme si possano raggiungere obiettivi importanti. Un’Africa che trova la sua incarnazione nei tre “ambassador” che, sotto la guida dei fotografi, in modi diversi, hanno ispirato il progetto e che conosciamo meglio nel corso delle puntate: Waris Dirie, modella e attrice somala impegnata da anni nella lotta contro le mutilazioni genitali femminili, un trauma che ha vissuto sulla sua pelle; Zulaikha Patel, giovane attivista sudafricana che, che, appena tredicenne, ha guidato una protesta contro le discriminazioni verso le studentesse nere; e il premio Nobel Denis Mukwege, fondatore, nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo, del Panzi Hospital, un centro dedicato alla cura delle donne vittime di violenze sessuali . “More than us” è anche un omaggio alla storia di Fondazione Lavazza. Lavazza dedicates its 2024 calendar to the importance of community, and of belonging: hence the name, “More than us”. At the center of each picture this year is the African continent, full of creativity and with an eye towards the future. In this podcast, we’ll discover the stories of the three photographers who worked on the 12 photographs: Thandiwe Muriu, Aart Verrips and Daniel Obasi. Each of these African artists used their own sensitivity to interpret the values of Responsibility, Sustainability, Innovation and Inspiration; values which the Giuseppe and Pericle Lavazza Foundation has been following for twenty years. These pictures depict Africa free from stereotypes and united in the vision that important goals can be reached together. This Africa incarnates itself in three ambassadors. Each of which inspired the project in their own way under the direction of the photographers, and which we’ll get to know during the episodes: Waris Dirie, a Somalian actress and model who’s been fighting for years against female genital mutilation. Zulaikha Patel, a young South-African activist who led a silent protest against the policies of the Pretoria Girls High School.
