Communication has gotten faster and easier these days, making it simple to conduct business and make new connections. But the flip side to this new world is that those who like to breed negativity are finding it a lot easier to do so.

Haters, trolls, and even “Hatertrolls" are becoming more and more prolific, and can easily take down a day that began as positive. But what’s the best way to combat this unfortunate movement? And how do you restore your own positivity in the face of such negativity? In this episode, Desmond talks about the best ways to block out the haters.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Bullying is taking on many forms. As well as personal and professional, there have even been instances of companies bullying other companies.
  • “Hatertroll" is a new term, described by the Urban Dictionary as “an individual who radiates negative feelings, emotions or energy towards people who stimulate positive energy”
  • Most haters or bullies begin their campaigns against people who have succeeded in some way. If these achievements were not significant then there would be no cause to be bullied.
  • Trolls often multiply the negativity in their own lives. They should be pitied in a way, as they are obviously tremendously unhappy.
  • Argumentative people, those who are naturally combative, are those who relentlessly seek out conflict. This can manifest itself in the smallest of confrontations, such as pointing out spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
  • Bullies feel the need to place themselves at the centre of controversial topics. If you are opinionated on either side, then you will always naturally offend someone.
  • Bullying is a behaviour, especially in the business world. It’s not a strategy, and should not be emulated. It is a personal behavioural trait. Manners and understanding should be a core principle of business strategy instead.

BEST MOMENTS

’She totez a hatertroll!’

‘If you are being bullied, it means you’ve done something positive and right’

’If you were to express all your views, then you would alienate and possibly insult lots of people’

‘Wow, this person needs help’

‘Bullying is not a business strategy’

ABOUT THE HOST

I don’t know how this works, but you’re here now listening (hopefully) about my exciting life, so I’m going to try and make this worth your while. I never got inspired at school, I was too busy trying to impress my peers, chasing girls, and being a fool to get inspired. I rejected school. But let me tell you something for free! That was a mistake! I spent the next 15 years in jobs I hated, with no direction, lacked purpose, and motivation for life. Yes, big words, but that was me in a box. A slave to the system! Fast forward to today, and well, I’m not sitting in my ivory tower or anything, but I love life and my career. Yeah, it’s both painful and exciting rolled and wrapped up into one giant subway, and who doesn’t love subway rite? The point is, you only get one life, don’t waste it pursuing things you care nothing for, invest in YOURSELF and grow as a person, be the best YOU by putting YOU first!
