“The biggest value that you have in the world is just in your head and your heart.”

Today on the episode of the More with Moreira Podcast, Desmond is joined by John Joseph to talk about how we can empower and shape the minds of the young people. As an individual who didn’t have the access to social and financial education when he was young, just like most Gen X, he wants to make changes for the future generations through his experience and knowledge. Joe is very passionate about helping the youth unlock their potential and have the right mindset so they can achieve more in the future.

Aside from this, they also talk about how music can be healing, how we can deal with the fear of failure, why we should maintain a healthy and nurturing environment for us (and everyone else), how diversity can help in decision-making, and many more.

It’s not too late to give back by contributing value to others. Learn how you can use your success to help others achieve it when you tune in.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Music has helped John process his emotions. For example, when he was grieving for the loss of his mother, writing songs became comforting.
  • How do you set yourself apart from your competition? You have to build yourself up. Three years is a good timeframe which can manifest your commitment to your craft or passion. Always plan ahead and be clear on your short-term and long-term vision for yourself. In addition, it’s easier to communicate and articulate who you are, what you do to someone (i.e. employer) when you’ve been doing for a long time.
  • Education is paramount. Always aim to learn, for self-development, for being more beneficial to your company, and for bringing value to others. Look at the bigger picture.
  • Let your fear of failure drive you to improve yourself and reach your goal. For John, the acknowledgement that failures can happen always make him prepare and strive more in everything he does.
  • Build your networks. ‘It’s not what you know; it’s who you know and who knows you.’ You can learn from others’ experiences and avoid some mistakes if you ask people about advice. And, make sure that the environment you put yourself into is comfortable and trusting for you and everyone.
  • Diversity skills in the workplace is very helpful to the growth of the company and each individual. Each person’s knowledge and expertise can help surface the choices—which one individual can’t brainstorm on his own—that can be of use in decision-making.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “Music is always something that enabled me to keep a record of milestones in my life.”
  • “If there’s no plan, then you plan to fail.”
  • “Life is not a walk, it’s a jog… and sometimes, it’s a race.”
  • “You can either learn through your own experience or you can learn from someone else.”
  • “Everything’s a learning opportunity.”
  • “Situations in life makes everyone who they are.”
  • “Like-minded find each other.”

ABOUT THE HOST

I don’t know how this works, but you’re here now listening (hopefully) about my exciting life, so I’m going to try and make this worth your while. I never got inspired at school, I was too busy trying to impress my peers, chasing girls, and being a fool to get inspired. I rejected school. But let me tell you something for free! That was a mistake! I spent the next 15 years in jobs I hated, with no direction, lacked purpose, and motivation for life. Yes, big words, but that was me in a box. A slave to the system! Fast forward to today, and well, I’m not sitting in my ivory tower or anything, but I love life and my career. Yeah, it’s both painful and exciting rolled and wrapped up into one giant subway, and who doesn’t love subway rite? The point is, you only get one life, don’t waste it pursuing things you care nothing for, invest in YOURSELF and grow as a person, be the best YOU by putting YOU first!
