2:11
murders 15 miles away. Police
2:14
arrived. They found the telephone and electricity lines. We
2:17
have a weird house. We
2:20
are seen described by one investigator as
2:22
reminiscent of a weird... ...a
2:24
cop of murder. Money
2:26
can't be found. Money
2:29
can't buy everything. On
2:31
May 1, 2008, a wealthy,
2:34
beautiful, and beloved woman
2:37
was killed inside of her home in
2:39
a case that remains a mystery to
2:41
this day. So,
2:43
if you like your coffee hot but your bones chilled,
2:46
sit back and start your day with a
2:49
morning cup of murder. Eva
2:51
K. Whittle and her fourth husband, prominent
2:55
real estate developer Harold Hal Whittle, fell in love the
2:57
moment they laid eyes on one another in
3:00
a Reno airport. Described
3:03
as striking and vivacious, K. was a beautiful
3:05
woman who many would be happy to walk
3:08
into a crowded room with. In
3:11
fact, according to her sister, Hal
3:13
loved walking into restaurants with his wife, enjoying
3:18
the sounds of other men reacting to his, quote, arm candy, who
3:20
even at the age of 60, was
3:25
still turning heads. With
3:27
an even better personality, K. was
3:30
truly loved by many, which
3:32
is what made her shocking murder all
3:35
the more tragic. On
3:37
May 1, 2008, Hal
3:39
Whittle, now 72, left work
3:42
and drove to the upscale Sugar Loaf Springs
3:44
subdivision in Lawrenceville, Georgia, where
3:47
he and his wife of 20 years rented
3:50
a home. So the plan
3:52
was to move into a place of their own sometime soon. All
3:55
that came crashing down when Hal, unable to get K.
3:58
on the phone, walked
4:00
into their house and found her
4:02
lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen
4:05
floor. Deep gouges spread
4:07
across her throat. Completely
4:10
panicked and in shock, Hal ran to
4:13
a neighbor's home and asked for help.
4:17
911 was called, but unfortunately, it was
4:19
too late for Kaye Winall. According to
4:21
the officer who arrived at the scene,
4:24
Hal was, quote, laid down
4:26
beside his wife, begging us
4:28
to help. From what
4:30
they could tell, Kaye had been punched several
4:32
times by some unknown killer, and
4:35
her throat stabbed and slit almost
4:37
to the point of decapitation. There
4:41
were no signs of forced entry, and
4:43
nothing was stolen from their upscale home,
4:46
but the assailant did leave behind a
4:48
bloody towel in the closet of the
4:50
master bedroom. It was
4:52
placed atop the locked cabinet containing all of Kaye's
4:54
jewelry, and when opened,
4:57
a number of pieces of
5:00
leather lingerie. Pieces Hal said
5:02
he had never seen and had no
5:04
idea where they came from. Though
5:07
there was male DNA found at the scene,
5:09
experts were unable to identify the
5:11
source. Now, to understand
5:13
the rest of the story, we have to do a little bit
5:16
of time jumping just for a moment. At
5:18
some point over the course of the
5:20
police investigation, Hal Winall, desperate
5:22
to know what happened that day,
5:24
hired three private investigators who helped
5:27
piece together the final moments of
5:29
Kaye's life. According to
5:31
their findings, Kaye woke up
5:33
the morning of May 1st with every intention
5:36
of going to work, finding
5:38
tenants to fill her husband's successful
5:40
shopping centers. However, not
5:42
feeling well, she changed her mind and
5:44
decided to lay low at home, meaning
5:47
that whoever did this to her
5:50
somehow knew about the change of
5:52
plans. This, coupled with
5:54
the fact that there was no signs of
5:56
forced entry, had many worried that the killer
5:58
was someone close to her. to the Wennells,
6:01
or at the very least, someone
6:03
who Kay felt comfortable letting inside
6:05
of her home. From
6:08
what they could tell based on the
6:10
blood splatter, the attack began right there
6:12
at the threshold of their front door.
6:15
Delivered a blow so strong it
6:17
stunned her and sent her glasses
6:19
flying across the room, Kay then
6:21
fled into the kitchen, perhaps
6:24
to find a phone, and was
6:26
caught by the assailant who, now armed with
6:28
a knife, did what they called
6:30
an insurance cut across
6:32
her throat. Now
6:35
incapacitated, he continued bringing
6:37
down the knife. Nobody
6:39
in the neighborhood saw this man come or
6:41
go from inside the Wennell residence, and
6:44
the murder weapon, an extremely sharp
6:46
instrument, likely a knife, was
6:49
never found. They
6:51
do know that the assailant was wearing
6:53
gloves. Pieces of latex were found at
6:55
the scene, but with the
6:57
exception of that bloody towel, no other
7:00
evidence was found. No
7:02
fingerprints, footprints, hairs, or
7:04
fibers. And most
7:07
troubling, no obvious motive.
7:10
Just six days after her body
7:12
was discovered, friends and family gathered
7:14
to say goodbye. The
7:16
funeral was packed with mourners, and it
7:19
became clear that, though they took surveillance
7:21
footage of the crowd to see if
7:23
they could find anything suspicious, Kay
7:25
Wennell had no known enemies.
7:28
Nobody was threatening her to her loved one's
7:31
knowledge. No one scared her. And
7:33
none of them, no matter how strange
7:35
the case got, ever expected
7:37
how Wennell's involvement, not
7:40
even her own sister. The police,
7:42
however, didn't agree with their steadfast
7:44
support. Claiming he was a
7:47
suspect from day one, as the
7:49
husband usually is, Howe was eager
7:51
to cooperate with the investigation and agreed
7:53
to a police interview without a lawyer
7:55
present. Handing over
7:57
an ironclad alibi with video.
8:00
The balance prove it. Police searched
8:02
his records to see if there
8:04
was any evidence of the wealthy
8:06
man hiring a hit man, but
8:08
found absolutely nothing of concern. The
8:11
only thing he seemed a truly guilty of
8:14
was trying to protect the memory of his
8:16
beloved wife. Who. As the
8:18
investigation would uncover. Seem. To
8:20

8:23

8:25

8:30

8:32
Claim that how knew about this

8:39

9:47
of what we've already talked about in
9:49
the story was uncovered by this team
9:51
who in the beginning only really had
9:53
one clue to work off of. according
9:56
to a witness a stranger was seen
9:59
in the neighborhood the same afternoon
10:01
Kay was killed and a sketch
10:03
was made of the man, the neighbor claimed
10:05
he saw once the day of the
10:07
murder and another time the day before.
10:09
A man
10:11
who allegedly had a flyer for a home that
10:13
was for sale in the subdivision that
10:15
when asked the neighbor told him
10:18
was on the opposite side and watched as
10:20
he walked out of sight. Police
10:22
later discovered that the flyer was only
10:25
given to people who had already been
10:27
inside the home for showings that day,
10:29
the day before Kay's murder and
10:31
the following day that same neighbor was looking
10:34
out his bathroom window and claimed
10:36
he saw the man walking towards the Winnell
10:38
residence. Not sure
10:40
if this man was the killer or simply in
10:42
the wrong place at the wrong time, for
10:45
the next eight plus years police
10:47
tried and failed to identify this
10:49
mystery man and
10:52
after checking into every single man
10:54
in Kay's life including her
10:56
doctor, a restaurant manager and
10:59
even a clerk at a local hobby lobby
11:01
who had a crush on her they still
11:03
failed to come up with another viable suspect.
11:06
The case seemed to be
11:08
frozen solid. This however didn't mean
11:11
that they stopped following up on every
11:13
lead that they had. Like in July
11:15
of 2012 when they
11:17
publicly appealed for information regarding the
11:19
identity of an unknown man seen
11:22
in photographs that they hoped
11:24
might hold the key to finding out
11:26
who murdered Kay Winnell. Discovered
11:28
after relatives handed over a box of Kay's
11:30
possessions to the police after
11:33
Hal Winnell died of a heart attack,
11:35
the man in the photos who might have
11:38
been a family friend bore a striking resemblance
11:40
to the sketch created of the man seen
11:42
walking in the neighborhood back in May of
11:44
2008. Along
11:46
with the release of the photos was
11:48
the mention of a note written using
11:51
cut up letters from magazines and
11:53
though dusted for prints and coming back with
11:55
nothing of value officials released
11:58
a photo of the letter in hopes
12:00
of that someone somewhere might recognize what
12:02
they believed might have been a key
12:04
piece of evidence. The
12:06
letter itself talks about a relationship
12:08
or possible relationship that this person
12:10
had with Kaye Winall and
12:13
in one line stated, quote, she
12:15
loved me, but that was a
12:17
lie too. The
12:19
letter also referred to amongst
12:21
a number of expletives, quote,
12:24
I bet Kaye Winall never told anyone
12:26
what she really was referring
12:28
to her as a quote, money
12:31
grubbing whore claim that she hated her
12:33
home and her quote, that
12:35
miserable lying mother effing husband and
12:38
stated, quote, I told her
12:40
this would happen if she didn't keep her
12:42
goddamn promise to me. Possibly
12:45
depicting a motive for the murder,
12:47
the letter was allegedly mailed to
12:49
the Atlanta Journal Constitution's Norcross office
12:51
months after Kaye was found dead
12:54
and the papers quickly turned it over to
12:56
the police. It was
12:58
postmarked July 21st, 2008 and was mailed from
13:03
Augusta, Georgia, about 140 miles
13:05
away from the crime scene. They
13:08
believe that whoever constructed the letter is
13:10
the same person who brutally killed Kaye
13:12
Winall. Unfortunately, even when
13:14
taken apart carefully in hopes of
13:17
finding any forensics, the letter
13:19
and the envelope it came in did
13:21
nothing to yield any new clues. But
13:24
what it did prove was that whoever
13:26
did this did so carefully
13:29
and methodically a scorned
13:32
lover with a plan. The
13:35
last real update in the case came in
13:37
2017 when police publicly stated that they were
13:39
still trying to identify the man in the
13:41
photo as well as the man in the
13:43
sketch who they thought were one and the
13:46
same. According to
13:48
the sources just before his death, having
13:50
never gotten the answers he was desperate
13:52
for, how Winall suggested to
13:54
police that they look into the men in
13:56
Kaye's past. Men like
13:58
Jeff Gilbert, Her third
14:00
husband, whom she was still married to
14:03
when she met Hal, threatened her when she tried
14:05
to leave him, and a few
14:07
months before her murder, called Kay to ask
14:09
if they could meet up when he was
14:11
in Atlanta. She said no,
14:13
and he was livid. Police
14:17
say, however, that there was no indication he
14:19
was involved in her murder. There
14:21
is also speculation that whoever killed
14:24
Kay Winnell might have instead
14:26
been trying to send a message to her
14:28
husband, Hal. A
14:30
seemingly incredibly successful salesman, Hal
14:33
might have been in some trouble work-wise
14:35
around the time of the murder, possibly
14:38
even engaging in some fraud.
14:41
Could Kay have gotten caught up in
14:43
his shady business dealings and died as
14:45
a result? Despite theories
14:48
mentioning the mafia, Hal could think
14:50
of no one who hated him
14:52
enough to commit murder, and
14:55
a hitman theory seemed unlikely given
14:57
the up-close nature of the murder.
14:59
The letter, the one with the cut-up
15:01
letters, seemed to further disprove any
15:03
hitman or Hal centered
15:06
theories. So, was
15:08
Kay Winnell killed by a scorned lover,
15:11
or was she killed by someone who had
15:13
a lot to gain by her death? Questions
15:16
continue, and answers seem hard
15:18
to come by. The case,
15:21
unfortunately, remains unsolved. Thank
