RATING
If I have one gripe about Mortal Enemy, it’s that the humor is pretty juvenile. There’s only so many references to penises and farts I can take in an otherwise fairly serious work before I want to yell enough already. And yet the last scene still manages to squeeze one more in. But if you can get past the Shrek-like need to pepper in jokes about bodily functions, there’s a lot to like about this heavily BioShock-inspired mix of science fiction and fantasy. The cast is a murderer’s row of TV and film actors. Vant Hu’l is a likable hero with a solid moral compass and the rest of the cast, especially Grammie, get to regularly steal the show as they explore this weird grotesque world. Chris Pine plays the Mayor and he sounds like he's having a blast at it. The book has not much on its mind other than entertaining you and it’s in the lovingly crafted, crowd pleasing action sequences that it truly excels. There’s a scene over a magma pool that had me on the edge of my seat. It’s a fun ride and I am amazed at the generosity of it being available for free.
Amazingly immersive, fun and exciting, addicting, and irreverent.
I'll be honest it took me a good 6 episodes to get into this and if it wasn't for listening to the trailer first I would've probably given up. So very glad I didn't it's an amazing production, I binged it for 3 days. A good story with great acting and it's the first I've listened to with a narrator. A post apocalyptic fantasy story read and acted so very well by a big cast. There was a teaser to a follow up and I only hope there is.
Wow. Just wow. This is not something I would normally listen to but damn, I'm happy I did. The production was top notch and the story was fantastic. Never a dull moment and kept my imagination going. Just do yourself a favor and give it a listen.
