What if your mother were in prison? And your brothers? And your childhood sweetheart, too. What if you had 16 close relatives who were incarcerated, many of them cycling in and out of prison?

From the time she was a toddler, this has been Kamika Hebbert’s life. But legacy is not destiny, and in Kamika’s mind, it’s family over everything.

Kamika Hebbert, founder of Kamiak Speaks and We’ve Been Sentenced. In a career dedicated to uplifting people in her community, Kamika Hebbert has touched the lives of hundreds of foster youth, through personal mentorship and her own creative work. As a mentor, she helps young adults navigate the challenges of systemic oppression; from drug abuse, cycles of incarceration, and the family issues that come with both.

“We’ve Been Sentenced.” documentary short film by Amy Krause, which introduces Kamika’s story, and offers a rare look at incarceration from the viewpoint of the family members whose lives go on outside prison walls, full of loss and longing. A touching documentary exploring Kamika’s journey through foster care and multigenerational incarceration. Attend the documentary film premier on Saturday, May 18th at the Guild Theatre, 2828 35th Street, Sacramento.
