In episode 1 of Science Sagas, host Ian Graber-Stiehl chats with science writer and biographer David Quammen about how the mysterious illness and poor constitution of Charles Darwin, "the vomitiest scientist in history" helped bring us "On the Origins of Species" -- as well as how a brilliant, but abrasive recluse of a microbiologist ultimately reinvented the rudimentary tree of life that Darwin first sketched in a corner of his notebook.

Muckraker Media

Muckrakers were investigative reporters and writers during the Progressive Era (1890–1920) who wrote about corruption and injustices in order to bring about changes in society. The team at Muckraker Media exists to bear these same responsibilities. Creatives within this network are fighting to push education forward. Institutional barriers to education are a crime against humanity. The team at Muckraker Media is guided by the belief that education is a human right, and that modern mediums for delivery will surmount any paywall while reaching more diverse audiences. Muckraker Media does not create the content of each show which allows hosts total creative liberty. Also, we are the only nonprofit podcast network aimed specifically at producing open-access educational content. Advocating for positive societal change begins with advocating for education. For too long, education systems have promoted inauthentic learning based on rote memorization. These practices create an inelegant system that values test scores but leaves little room for passion or genuine interest. Moreover, higher education is increasingly cost-ineffective, posing a formidable barrier to entry for low-income families. Muckraker Media seeks to provide autonomy in learning, thus reflecting an innate psychological need. Muckraker Media is not an attempt to replace traditional education—it is an effort to supplement it. Our mission is to inspire lifelong learning by providing open access to interesting and useful content thereby subverting an outdated and coercive system built on information inequality. For learning to be recognized as the subversive activity it ought to be—subversive in that the act of learning should question the accelerants of societal entropy—the power and authority of attitudes, beliefs, and assumptions that foster chaos and uselessness as Neil Postman would put it.
