RATING
I normally find actual plays very difficult to get into; I have even bounced off of Critical Role. However, this has roped me for a host of reasons.Despite being a new podcast, the production levels are quite high. The audio quality is good, they clearly edit, and they make good use of music and the occasional sound effect. This leads to an almost "radio play-esque" style that's very easy to listen to.The members of the cast seem to get along well and that chemistry translates into the in-game interactions. It's early yet, but already a nice "buddy" dynamic is developing among the PCs (all of whom are likable individually as well) and as a result, episode time is spent actually advancing the plot rather than engaging in intra-party squabbling and machinations.Speaking of the plot, the underlying story basis of investigating just what happened on The Day of Mourning in Eberron is a brilliant framework to hang a campaign on. The official materials deliberately leave that open-ended, and that lack of a canonical answer allows for some genuine suspense. The GM also manages to incorporate spooky/creepy imagery and themes without going over the top into needless gore, torture porn, or the other various cheap gross-out traps horror often falls into. And on top of all of this, it's structured well. Episodes are about half an hour or so, and every one of them so far has ended on a note that at least leaves the listener wondering what's going to happen next, and sometimes on a full-blown cliffhanger. I cannot recommend this highly enough. If any individual part of the "Actual play using the Level Up rules set in Eberron" concept interests you (even if the others don't!) this is definitely worth at least a try.
