The title of this column is derived from a period in printing history when news columns were set in type by casting hot metal (mostly led) into lines of type. After the issue was printed most of the lines of type were tossed in a box to be remelted to provide the led material for casting the type for the next edition. That box became known as the “hellbox” and a helper in the shop who was responsible for the remelting was known as the “printer's devil.” In...
