This is a Headgum Original. Across

0:11

this nation, the words

0:13

Gotham City are synonymous with

0:15

drive. Our streets

0:17

are overrun, our public officials are

0:19

helpless... What

0:27

are you? I'm

0:30

Batman. I'm

0:33

reading your stuff. I'm Vicki Vale. Vicki

0:35

Vale, yeah, yeah, photographer. What can't you hear?

0:38

You're here to see some of the wildlife of

0:40

Gotham City. Who are you? Oh,

0:43

sorry. I'm just waiting. And what

0:45

do you do for the thing? My life is really

0:48

complex. Every punk in

0:50

this town is scared of Batman. Not

0:52

for the night time there is no Batman. If it

0:54

were, we would find him. We would arrest him. Who

0:57

is this guy? Who

0:59

are you, freak? They let

1:01

you load a maid. This

1:12

town needs an enema. A

1:17

lot of people think you're as dangerous as the Joker.

1:19

I could. I think your friend

1:21

Wayne is really screwed up. His parents

1:23

were murdered in that house. I

1:31

have given a name to my pain, Batman.

1:35

He's out there right now. I've

1:37

got to go to work. If you gotta go,

1:40

go with the small one. You

1:49

ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight? Thanks

1:57

for watching! Whoa.

2:14

I'm Nicole LaVeyer. And

2:33

I'm

2:35

Lauren Lofkis and this season we are

2:37

covering the Batman movies. Yes, this is the

2:39

second episode of the sixth season. We're working

2:41

our way through these movies within the

2:43

Batman universe with the help of fellow newcomers,

2:46

super fans, and sometimes people who have contributed

2:48

to the universe. And this season is going to be 14 episodes

2:51

culminating in a very exciting

2:53

livestream episode where anything can

2:55

happen and it's live. We're

2:58

going to go for as much so we can get to

3:00

overview the franchise. We're not going to

3:02

get to everything. No, too much. Yeah, there's a touch.

3:05

Too dense. Too dense. Today

3:07

we are going to be discussing the 1989 Batman

3:10

starring Michael Keaton. Mm-hmm. Batman is available

3:12

with a subscription to Mac's Hulu Prime

3:14

Video. But if you want to give

3:17

somebody money, Apple TV Plus, Google Play,

3:19

and Vadu, then we're going to spoil

3:21

the shit out of this. But we

3:24

are so excited for our guest today.

3:26

Ooh, baby. Our guest is an actor,

3:28

comedian, writer, producer, director, and singer. You've

3:31

probably seen him on SNL, How I Met

3:33

Your Mother, New Girl, or maybe even in

3:35

the Broadway production of Hamilton, it's Taryn

3:37

Killam. Hi, my friends. Hi,

3:40

hi, hi. Oh, my gosh. Such

3:42

a newcomers fan. So honored to

3:45

be on this, the most

3:47

important season of your lives. It

3:49

does feel really important. Yes, because

3:52

people seem to really love Batman.

3:54

I think they do. I, wait, I

3:56

need to talk about Hamilton. Okay, I want to talk about

3:58

it. Okay, sure. That's the most amazing.

4:00

I feel like that was the most perfect role for

4:02

you in the world. So fucking good. Yeah,

4:05

I think, yes. I felt

4:07

like a contest winner. It

4:09

was at that point, everybody's favorite

4:12

thing. Like this is a

4:14

true story. The six years I was on

4:16

SNL, the total

4:18

request for tickets for that show was

4:21

fewer in those six years than the three

4:23

months I did Hamilton. Does that make sense?

4:25

That is pretty wild. Crawling out of the

4:27

woodwork. Everybody. Everyone's like,

4:29

hey, we haven't talked in 30 years.

4:33

And a lot of people try to get SNL, but

4:36

this was overwhelming to

4:38

the point of blocking

4:41

emails. It was, people loved

4:43

it. And I loved doing it. People loved

4:45

that. And that passion for the show certainly

4:50

informed my experience in terms of the

4:52

pressure, the stress of just like, pull

4:55

your weight, dude. And

4:58

it was truly one of the most rewarding and

5:01

thrilling professional experiences of my life. Second,

5:04

only maybe to this? Yeah,

5:07

well obviously we knew that was coming.

5:09

This is important. This podcast is important.

5:12

Well, yes, this movie

5:14

that we're about to talk about for

5:16

the very first time is

5:21

truly the movie that made me

5:24

want to do showbiz. To

5:26

me that makes sense. I think what

5:28

I loved, I loved all the characters and

5:30

how I like Tim Burton's style and everything.

5:32

And I think watching this as a kid,

5:35

it gives you that feeling of like, wow, adults get

5:37

to have a really cool job. If you do this

5:39

for a living, it's so cool. Yes,

5:41

what I'm doing in the backyard as a seven

5:44

year old child, these people

5:46

are doing full throttle

5:49

with a huge budget,

5:51

making magic seem real. That

5:54

is funny, because that's literally what we do, what

5:56

children do. We play pretend and get paid money. Yeah,

5:59

it's insane. It's wild. When you think about

6:01

acting, sometimes it makes me sick. When I think

6:03

about walking up to someone in the scene and

6:05

being like, why would you do that? And we're

6:08

all being really in time for something. And

6:10

you're like, what can I do to get

6:13

there? And it's like, ooh, no. Cringy. Or

6:15

someone puts a fake nose on you

6:17

and you're like, what? Yeah. Yeah. What

6:19

is this? Especially after a take or

6:21

after a performance, where that was good.

6:24

You found it. That's where I

6:26

really self-check and go like, I

6:28

found playing like a 78-year-old man

6:30

in an improv who

6:35

doesn't know what bananas are. And

6:38

it's a good scene. It's a great scene. And

6:40

it's slaughtered. See,

6:43

I feel it more during... Sides were split

6:45

like a peel. I

6:47

feel it more during a dramatic scene that I

6:50

feel like I didn't nail. And then I'm like,

6:52

well, that's really rough. I really don't know.

6:56

I'm like, I really tried to do that. And I

6:58

don't know how to be serious. I don't think I

7:00

got that. I was earnest in that take. I

7:03

was earnest in that attempt. Very

7:05

vulnerable right now. I did a

7:07

voiceover where I played an elephant. And they were

7:09

like, can you give us elephant effort noises? And

7:11

it was very early in my career. And I

7:13

was like, yes. And they're like, go for it.

7:16

And I was like, I'm sorry, what noises do elephants make? And

7:19

they were like, you know, like, Wait,

7:22

I literally had this happen recently. With

7:25

being a chicken who's about to laugh.

7:28

It was supposed to be a chicken noise into laughter. Could

7:30

not do it. I don't know. That's

7:38

an insane request. And I tried to practice in the car and I

7:40

was like, I

7:42

have to die now. Like this is

7:44

like so... Isn't

7:49

that cool? Okay, well

7:51

tell us really quickly. What is your

7:53

relationship with Batman? We

7:55

could talk about acting all day. Yeah, yeah,

7:57

yeah, yeah. Batman... like

8:00

comic books superhero stuff died in

8:02

the wall like From

8:05

first memories those were my important

8:07

stories the important characters But

8:09

it was always very bright and colorful in

8:11

the comic books and that and this movie

8:13

Batman 89

8:15

Burton Keaton's Batman Like

8:18

was the first time that made it feel

8:20

real because there's been Superman movies right like

8:23

there'd been the Christopher Reeve Superman like And

8:25

those are impressive and great, but there's something

8:27

about Superman. That's like too fantastic He's an

8:29

alien and he can fly and he never

8:31

gets hurt and it's it's

8:33

such fantasy This movie

8:36

was like not only is Batman

8:38

a real dude with exceptional skill

8:40

But he might actually exist like

8:43

he's no longer Adam West in

8:45

pajamas He is a real

8:48

man with a bulletproof black rubber suit

8:50

and he will He

8:52

will appear through fog on

8:54

Gotham City rooftops and and right wrongs

8:57

and I like that I like that

8:59

too. I love it. I love

9:01

this movie I love it It was fun going back

9:03

and watching it cuz like it held up and there

9:05

was there was stuff that like

9:07

I didn't necessarily Pick up on the first

9:10

time, you know, I like every every every

9:12

rewatch it reveals something new for me Yeah,

9:14

I had seen it as a kid But then this

9:17

was my first time watching it as an adult I think

9:19

and it was really I mean, I just thought it

9:21

was really fun and I was very engaged the whole

9:23

time Nicole, I don't know was not engaged Percent

9:28

of the time This

9:30

came out in 89. Oh,

9:32

there we go. That's why I

9:36

don't know. It was just like kind of slow. I didn't

9:39

like Jack Nicholson too too much.

9:41

Yeah Yeah,

9:43

it was just so Terrence having

9:46

a hard time. I know I'm really sorry I

9:49

know what I signed up for. I know what I signed

9:51

up for. I'm like I said, I'm an avid listener The

9:54

fast season in my opinion

9:56

is flawless I

10:00

thought I'd seen every single movie and truly

10:02

the second movie. I was like, I've never

10:05

seen this in my life Yeah, yeah, I

10:07

mean one and five that one I

10:10

feel like they're all the same thing. But no,

10:12

I'm sorry fair enough Important

10:14

yeah down right now. They're very

10:17

important and their cinema. Yes. All

10:19

right. I respect everything that's happening

10:21

here Eat it. Scorsese

10:23

eat it You

10:25

could never score says he Really

10:28

serious he really could it Okay,

10:38

well, let's take a good break and we're gonna jump

10:40

deep If

10:49

I asked you how many subscriptions you have would you

10:51

be able to list them all and how much you're

10:53

paying oh my gosh I highly

10:55

doubt you could if you'd asked me this

10:57

question before I started using rocket money I

11:00

would have said yes, but let me tell you

11:02

I would have been so wrong I cannot

11:04

believe all these hidden fees and

11:06

subscriptions. I was completely unaware I

11:09

was still subscribed to it's

11:12

actually scary Sometimes you sign up for like a

11:14

free trial that eventually kicks into

11:16

a monthly payment and you forget about the

11:18

free trial or I've had I've had things

11:20

I wanted to cancel that were oddly difficult

11:22

to cancel Like I clicked the button and

11:24

just nothing would happen So

11:26

rocket money has really saved the day for me on

11:28

a couple instances here Rocket money

11:30

is a personal finance app that finds and

11:33

cancels your unwanted subscriptions monitors your spending and

11:35

helps lower your bills I can

11:37

see all of my subscriptions in one place and

11:39

if I see something I don't want I can cancel it with a

11:41

tap I never have to go on the phone customer

11:44

service. Oh, isn't that great to not talk on the

11:46

phone? Rocket money has over 5 million

11:48

users and has helped save its members an average of

11:51

$720 a year with over 500 million

11:54

dollars in canceled subscriptions Stop

11:56

wasting money on things you don't use cancel

11:59

your unwanted subscriptions Oh,

16:01

that fucking sucks. Does that brutal? That's so

16:03

sad. That's so brutal. That's so shitty. The only equivalent

16:05

I have in my life is like when I audition

16:07

for something and I think I have a chance and

16:09

then a celebrity gets it and I'm like, they never

16:12

even wanted it. They didn't want me. Right.

16:14

They didn't want me at all. I was like, I will put a

16:16

pawn. Yeah. Mine's sadder. It'll

16:18

just be another fat black woman who looks pretty much like

16:20

me who's at the same level as me and I go,

16:22

I guess I wasn't good enough. This is...

16:25

Am I? I guess anyway you

16:27

place it. Am I in a changeable place? We're all

16:29

getting rejected at some point. Alexander

16:33

Knox, Robble Wool, Robber. I think it's Robert. It's

16:35

gotta be Robert. It's gotta be Robert. Okay, okay,

16:37

bad man fandom with me. It's Arliss. Did you

16:39

guys do a season on Arliss already? Did I

16:41

miss that one? No, no, wait, wait. You haven't

16:43

done newcomers, Arliss. We need to do newcomers, Arliss.

16:45

Wait, it's Robert, right? I've never seen... Robert Wool,

16:47

yes. Arliss. It says Robble, Robber, Robber

16:49

Wool. What's that? It's not a... It's a...

16:52

It's a... It's a... It's

16:55

a... It's a... It's a... It's

16:58

a... It's a... What's

17:01

that? A nice one, Robber. Robber Wool.

17:03

Robber. Oh my god, Robber Wool. A

17:06

journalist who's trying to get answers about

17:08

the supposed vigilante known as Batman meets

17:10

photojournalist, Vicky Vale, Kim Basinger, who is

17:12

intrigued by the Batman mystery and is

17:14

gonna help them find out who this

17:16

guy really is. They attend a benefit

17:18

at Bruce Wayne's estate. They briefly meet

17:20

Bruce Wayne and he's soon pulled away

17:23

by Alfred, who ushers him into the

17:25

Batcave. There, Bruce watches a tape

17:27

of Commissioner Gordon talking to a police officer

17:29

about the raid... about a raid on

17:31

Axis chemicals. Okay, Kim

17:34

Basinger, beautiful, also looks a

17:36

lot like Jerry Hall. Jerry

17:38

Hall. Yes. I found

17:40

that a little confusing. For a hot second I said, these

17:42

are different women. Yeah. And then I

17:44

was like, Nick. Hall. I know. Two

17:47

blondes can be in a movie. Yeah, it's confusing. Barbie.

17:50

Barbie, now the highest grossing picture of

17:52

all time for Warner Brothers. Yeah.

17:54

But are there even two blondes in Barbie?

17:56

Listen, still haven't seen it. Okay, you gotta

17:58

get on that. Everyone has seen

18:01

it already. There's no one to go with. Why don't we

18:03

do newcomers Barbie will watch all those Cartoons

18:06

for kids They're

18:20

all those like computer movies for a

18:22

computer game. Oh, yes Yes, and

18:24

to be honest, I just know that TV

18:26

shows called Barbie life in the dream house.

18:29

It's pretty funny. Okay Okay,

18:34

then our season will be good Yeah,

18:39

I don't know what our list I Up

18:42

actually because of this where I was like, I know

18:44

that guy. I know he's on our list I don't

18:46

know what that means and I was like, I think

18:48

he's a sports manager turns on his sports

18:50

agent. Yeah, okay I don't

18:52

know how I knew any of that. But

18:55

yeah, that was a long pretty long-running show.

18:57

It was on HBO. Yeah Yes,

18:59

so I do know something. Yeah,

19:01

see, okay Grissom

19:03

orders Jack Napier and his men to go to

19:05

access chemicals and destroy any evidence connecting their gang

19:08

to the chemical company when he gets

19:10

there Napier realizes they've been set up by

19:12

Grissom and he finds himself in a shootout

19:14

with lieutenant Eckhart a corrupt cop working For

19:16

Grissom Commissioner Gordon then interrupts Eckhart's

19:18

bust and tells the policeman to take Napier

19:20

alive Next Batman appears and takes

19:23

out Napier's men one by one Napier

19:25

kills lieutenant Eckhart just before he can

19:27

escape but then gets into a Batman

19:29

who blocks a bullet Napier fires at him with

19:31

his glove the bullet ricochets and rips

19:34

through Napier's face and the Batman tries

19:36

to rescue him Napier falls into a

19:38

vat of chemicals and is dumped into

19:40

the river which is a real bummer

19:42

and But that man

19:44

I just feel like he was trying that hard

19:46

to save him. No, no No,

19:49

when I when I showed this movie

19:51

to my children With

19:54

the preface of like this is a very

19:56

important movie to dad. So be gentle My,

20:00

the quote of the night was from my younger daughter

20:02

who was six at the time and she said, you

20:04

know what I like about Batman? He

20:07

has no rush. And I

20:10

thought that that was the most astute observation

20:12

of this Batman in particular. Because to your

20:14

point, he's not, he's not moving with speed

20:16

or whatever, you know, but he is very

20:19

elusive. But he is, he

20:21

is a very straight posture. Yeah.

20:24

Very, very, you know, very good.

20:26

Keeping that kick close to his body.

20:28

He just, he's got no rush. So I think like,

20:31

I want to say that it was

20:33

a totally creative choice, but I do

20:35

think the limited mobility really informed the

20:38

way that Batman moves with the shadows.

20:40

Yeah. Yeah. I agree. Yeah.

20:43

Tough to move in that little rubber suit. I wonder if that affected the

20:45

tone because it's like he's so stoic.

20:47

Like if he was doing more goofy

20:49

little moves. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It'd

20:51

be a little more distracting. Yeah. Not to

20:53

get too far ahead of it, but like you'll work

20:56

your way up to the Batman, which is the most

20:58

recent Batman movie. And like he's as

21:00

mobile as all get out. He's just basically got elbow

21:02

pads and knee pads. But my

21:04

problem with that movie is like one of the opening

21:06

lines is they said I'm in the shadows, but I

21:08

am the shadow. And for the rest of the movie,

21:10

he just knocks on the front door of every building

21:12

he walks into. And it's

21:15

like, well, it's not as sneaky and

21:17

as cool as Keaton's Batman who appears

21:19

and reappears because he has

21:21

no rush. You can't knock on the door.

21:23

Yeah. You can't just knock on the door and

21:25

say, hey, I'm a bat. I mean, I should walk on a

21:27

knock on a door unless it's Batman 66. Yeah.

21:31

So the following night, Bruce and Vicki have

21:33

dinner in his mansion. This is wild. The

21:36

night starts out a little formal and

21:38

awkward. Then the two move downstairs. I

21:40

have dinner with Alfred to get to

21:42

know each other and eventually spend the

21:44

night together. So they're having soup across

21:46

the longest table. And

21:49

Batman doesn't seem to think this is

21:51

weird. No. And I was

21:53

like, it's Bruce Wayne. I mean, Bruce doesn't think

21:55

it's weird. And at that point, I

21:57

was like, is Bruce maybe? And

22:00

this is not an octa people on the spectrum. I'm

22:02

spectra me. Is he on the spectrum?

22:04

He had he did not take any Any

22:06

there was no there was no weirdness to him at

22:09

all that she was so far away It was a

22:11

date. It's clearly not getting romantic at that level and

22:13

they're eating soup, which I just think is kind of

22:15

a weird choice But that's

22:17

a lady It feels like an

22:19

appetizer. It feels like they're like in a moose

22:21

bouche of sorts. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah I don't know

22:23

that that's the full meal, but he does say

22:26

She's like, you know, do you like to see room? He

22:28

goes? Yeah He's like I don't think I've ever been in

22:30

here and then later she says, you know

22:32

this house It doesn't feel like you and he says some

22:34

of it is very much me and he's

22:37

a little you know Because they're who

22:39

he is. He is batman and who's

22:41

wane is the facade? Yeah,

22:43

okay I liked when they moved

22:45

and they were sitting in the in the Okay

22:53

That is nice Gentle

22:56

surrender is no, honestly, that's that's most

22:58

what this podcast is. Yeah, just I'm

23:02

happy for you. I'm happy to make you happy. No,

23:04

I like that. Um But

23:07

I liked when they moved into into

23:09

alfred's quarters and they had their soup

23:11

at his little table It

23:13

was cute and then I was

23:15

like, yeah alfred is more of family than

23:19

A butler and it's helpful to have

23:21

a third wheel on a first date to kind

23:23

of like have casual conversations Yeah, I always like

23:25

to invite a friend of my dates I

23:30

like to invite the oldest friend I have So

23:35

napier in the meantime is not dead but

23:38

horribly disfigured by the chemicals He's fallen into

23:40

leaving him with chalk white skin bright green

23:42

hair and a permanent red grin this

23:45

I loved the grin personally

23:48

Yeah, it was cool. The transformation has

23:50

driven him completely insane calling himself the

23:52

joker He killed grissom and takes over

23:54

his criminal empire His first scheme is

23:56

to spread terror in the city by

23:58

creating hygiene products with a deadly

24:01

chemical known as Smylex that killed its

24:03

victims by hysterical laughter. Following the

24:05

death of a news anchor on air, the city becomes

24:07

paralyzed with fear. I like that scene. That was

24:09

pretty funny, but also scary. I was

24:11

like, imagine being there and being like, oh, my

24:13

friend's having a good time telling the news. And

24:15

they're like, oh, shit, she's dead. And the way

24:17

when they're dead, they have the smile. Yeah. I

24:20

like that. The newscaster lady laughing in

24:22

the middle of the broadcast, you don't

24:24

really know what's going on. So

24:27

great. Yeah, I know. So

24:29

great. I also thought that was very

24:31

creepy that they don't know how the

24:34

thing is getting there, how this how

24:36

this Smylex is like transmitted. I

24:38

got to say it is a very good villain

24:40

move. Yeah, it was very sneaky.

24:42

Yeah. And I thought that was

24:44

a very fun cameo type role to have as an actor,

24:47

like to be like the person who just like gets killed by

24:49

the Joker. Yeah, I could have

24:51

done that. I could do that. Next,

24:53

the Joker then sets up a

24:55

trap at the Flugelene Museum for

24:58

Vicki. Nailed it. I shouldn't

25:00

have nailed it to you. I'm sorry. It's

25:03

OK. It's part of the Zygote. I

25:05

don't mind it at all. OK, I'll keep it. I'll

25:08

keep it. So

25:11

with whom he's become smitten while his gang destroys

25:13

all the art around them, the Joker then tries

25:15

to just figure Vicki by spraying her with acid,

25:18

which is so rude. But Vicki douses

25:20

him with water. And I don't think that's a thing

25:23

to fight acid. But I'm not a scientist.

25:25

Yeah. And Batman crashes through

25:27

the museum ceiling, grabs Vicki and escapes with

25:29

her. Then he gives her the secret of

25:32

the Joker's chemical combinations and asks her to

25:34

take it to the press. The Joker, even more furious

25:36

with Batman, vows to eliminate the

25:38

mysterious vigilante for interfering with his

25:40

plans. I mean,

25:42

this scene was scary to me where she

25:44

doesn't know what's going on. Then he shows

25:46

up. I mean,

25:49

and and the sort of

25:51

fear of like her face getting ruined. Yeah.

25:54

I just didn't want to. I'll show him. Look,

25:57

when she throws the water in the in the

25:59

pan. pancake makeup's melting down, it's like

26:01

terrifying. I thought it was really creepy.

26:03

It was really genius when he

26:06

paints over it with like skin

26:08

tone, and I thought it was wiped off, but

26:10

it was like that was actually the part that

26:12

wipes off and it's like the white. It was

26:15

very clever. It was clever. When he was in

26:17

the skin tone color, I was like, do we

26:19

paint him slightly too dark? And... Ha

26:21

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

26:23

Danger, danger. The prosthetics are

26:25

also much creepier when he

26:27

is skin tone. Yeah.

26:31

Yeah. I didn't like that, but yeah. Later,

26:34

upon Alfred's insistence, Bruce goes to Vicky's apartment

26:36

to confess his secret identity as Batman. Now,

26:39

why is he jumping into this? Before

26:41

he can do that, the Joker interrupts them,

26:43

barging in and admonishing Vicky for taking off

26:45

with Batman. When the Joker spots Bruce in

26:48

the apartment, he taunts him, asking, have you

26:50

ever danced with the devil in the pale

26:52

moonlight and then shoots him? The

26:54

Joker takes off, but when Vicky rushes to

26:56

Bruce's side, she finds he's gone, leaving only

26:58

the silver platter that he had used to

27:00

block the Joker's bullet. Tricky, tricky. How

27:03

did that happen? Very tricky. And

27:05

I feel like I'm just amazed

27:07

by what he can withstand. Yes.

27:11

Also, I'm amazed by the fact that there is

27:13

part of his face exposed. And I'm wondering if

27:15

the head thing is bulletproof. I

27:18

think any part that's made out of the suit

27:20

has got some sort of bullet

27:22

repellent aspect. But for sure,

27:25

jaws a weak spot. Yeah,

27:27

jaws a weak. That's Batman's weak,

27:29

that's Batman's weakness. Everybody knows that.

27:32

Quickly, I presume, mouth shots for

27:34

Batman. Yeah. Me. Me.

27:37

The mayor of Gotham City comes

27:39

on TV to regretfully report that

27:42

Gotham City's 200th anniversary celebration has

27:44

been postponed indefinitely. Just then,

27:46

the Joker pirates the airwaves,

27:48

telling viewers that he will personally oversee

27:51

the celebration and give away 20 million

27:53

in cash, which is crazy. Who has

27:55

that in cash? Yeah, that's wild. Any

27:57

person would advise you to put something in style.

28:00

Plus he probably comes to the

28:03

confrontation with the real menace of

28:05

Gotham City, Batman. Meanwhile,

28:07

Knox tells Vicky about Bruce Wayne's parents who were

28:09

mung and murdered right in front of him as

28:11

a boy. He shows her a photo

28:13

of Bruce as a child at the scene and

28:16

Vicky recognizes Bruce as Batman by the look on

28:18

his face in the photo. Wild. She

28:20

leaves sick in front of him at Wayne Manor. No. I've

28:23

never looked at a child who's been like, I know the adults

28:25

that you grew up in. Yeah. That's

28:27

really wild. Especially if you just met this

28:29

guy. Yes. It's like if

28:32

I saw a picture of you, I might be

28:34

like, yeah, that's fine, Nicole. Yeah. Yeah. But

28:36

we know each other. Yeah. That's me. Yeah.

28:40

And if I saw you in a newspaper, I wouldn't assume

28:42

it is you. I don't know.

28:44

That's not, she's not clocking that he's

28:46

Batman, but she just sees the young

28:49

child who's suffered trauma and

28:51

that's why she followed him to that mysterious alley and now

28:53

that makes sense. But I don't think that's

28:55

where she's like, oh, this is the vigilante guy. You

28:58

know what she thinks? It's Bruce Wayne. She's

29:00

like, that's him. Yeah. Or

29:03

you're saying, oh wait. Please look into the

29:05

microfiche because it's from a, it's from a

29:08

news report. It's a very famous, you know,

29:10

Thomas and Martha Wayne. Oh, I read that.

29:14

I see. Boy, we're dumb. No,

29:16

we're really great. We're

29:18

smart. Okay. Bruce watches

29:20

the Joker's TV appearance while looking through the

29:23

files of his parents' murder, which is

29:25

kind of funny. As he replays events

29:27

of that night in his mind, he remembers

29:29

that one of the gunmen repeated the Joker's

29:32

line, have you ever danced with the devil

29:34

in the pale moonlight? And he realizes that

29:36

one of his parents' murderers was a young

29:38

Jack Napier slash Joker. He's so engrossed in

29:40

thought that he doesn't notice that Alfred has

29:42

brought Vicky into the Batcave revealing Batman's identity

29:44

as Bruce Wayne. They talk about what his

29:46

job as Batman means for their relationship.

29:49

But then Bruce tells her that the Joker

29:51

is still out there. So he's, he's got to clock in. He's

29:53

got to go to work. He has to go to work. I

29:57

feel like if two evil people said to

29:59

me, have you ever danced with the devil

30:01

in the pale moonlight I would connect the dots so

30:03

fast yes I

30:06

just feel like I agree there's a gun

30:08

pointed at me twice yeah I'm looking for

30:10

similarities yes so

30:13

the parade that the Joker promised is underway in

30:16

Gotham City this is a fun scene I liked

30:18

it but it isn't long before mayhem ensues as

30:20

canisters attached the balloons start to release poisonous gas

30:22

in the crowd so this was no was Prince

30:24

the music was that what it was yes this

30:27

so not I mean he

30:29

did a whole album okay yeah

30:32

right right right and I know a little

30:34

bit about this but I don't really know a

30:36

lot about the whole concept album about Batman

30:38

like he wrote like the music in the

30:40

museum is Prince the museum it has the

30:42

parade is Prince and there was a very

30:44

famous video the bat dance

30:46

with the kind of samples audio

30:49

files in the film and

30:52

speaking of choreography very elaborate choreography

30:54

and Prince half of him is

30:57

is himself and half his Joker he sort

30:59

of split down the middle I have no

31:02

I've never seen oh it's worth it's very

31:04

worth a watch sounds amazing Wow well the

31:06

most 80s thing that could

31:09

happen yeah yeah like the hip hop sort

31:12

of like float coming through

31:14

with the Prince music I liked

31:16

it it was a lot of

31:18

boom yeah yeah yeah yeah and

31:21

the puffy pants yeah yeah in

31:23

his bat plane I do love

31:25

bat plane bat car batmobile like

31:27

it's all very fun to me

31:29

great branding solid branding yeah just put

31:32

bat in front of it you got it bat

31:34

shoes Batman swoops down and grabs all of

31:36

the parade balloons and this is funny cuz

31:39

the Joker was like my balloon carrying

31:45

them out towards the ocean to release them where

31:47

they won't do any harm your friend to the

31:49

animals yeah to the dolphins and the whales

31:51

in the fish we didn't know that man

31:53

no now we

31:55

do yeah serious the Joker shoots

31:57

one of his goons and sends the rest away to

32:00

scare the crowd while he deals with

32:02

Batman himself. The Batplane swoops down towards

32:04

the remaining parade floats, shooting them and

32:06

destroying them. But the Joker manages

32:08

to shoot a hole in the Batplane and

32:10

the aircraft crashes landing in front of a

32:12

cathedral. He doesn't just shoot one

32:15

of his goons. He shoots Bob the Goon.

32:17

Which is very important because Bob the

32:20

Goon had his own action figure and

32:22

was the only figure that actually looked

32:24

like almost identical to the character in

32:26

the movie. And the actor who plays

32:28

Bob the Goon plays Cookie, the Chef

32:31

and City Slickers also film

32:33

a job pause. I

32:35

don't know if you guys would think that

32:37

I'd do Arliss, Barbie and then newcomer City

32:39

Slickers because that's another frame. We could have

32:41

done that. I've never seen it. No. This

32:44

is thrilling. We've got a lot ahead of us.

32:46

Truly. Anything can happen from this point forward. We've

32:48

only seen two movies. So

32:52

as Vicky makes her way toward the wreckage, the

32:54

Joker intercepts her taking her at gunpoint to the

32:56

top of the cathedral tower. Batman wounded, but still

32:59

alive follows the Joker and Vicky up to the

33:01

top of the cathedral. When Vicky spots

33:03

Batman approaching, she seduces the Joker long enough

33:05

to distract him. Now we

33:07

think she's about a humoblow job. This is

33:09

wild. She's like, I like that. That was

33:12

shocking this time for sure. Pretty shocked. Yeah.

33:14

In this, in this rewatch, the two things

33:16

that stood out to me was like, Oh,

33:18

I never really clocked that was Robert

33:20

Wool's joke about king of the wicker people.

33:23

I don't think that ever landed for

33:25

me before. It just cause the costume looks like it's

33:27

made out of wicker. And I was like, what is

33:29

wicker? Oh, he means like the furniture stuff. I

33:32

didn't really connect that before. And

33:34

then yeah, her sliding down and

33:36

Jack's and Joker's face was like,

33:39

Oh, yeah, this went over seven years

33:41

for sure. Yeah. And time

33:43

didn't clock it. I've seen it a bunch of

33:45

times since, but that was, yeah, that, that would

33:47

not fly these days. I feel in a family

33:50

targeted audience. No, because also at

33:53

this point we don't really see what her

33:55

plan is now. And so you kind of

33:57

think it's like she's do you think she's

33:59

got a plan? But it's like, come. Anything

34:01

to survive. Yeah. Any old thing.

34:03

Which is honestly, this would

34:06

be pretty gross. I don't think I

34:08

would like it. Oh

34:11

no. Wait,

34:14

doesn't the Joker disfigure his girlfriend? Yeah, that

34:16

happens in the... He shows

34:18

her in the restaurant. Oh, yes, it

34:20

does. In the media. Yeah, yeah. That

34:23

was scary. It was. Yeah.

34:26

So, Batman greets the Joker with the same

34:28

line. Have you ever danced with the devil

34:30

in the pale moonlight and throws his first

34:32

punch? The two fight, the brawl ends with

34:34

the Joker ducking out of the way, sending

34:36

Batman and Vicky tumbling over a ledge. That

34:38

worried me, but a helicopter arrives as we

34:40

get away from the Joker. He grabs on

34:42

and starts to escape. Batman fires

34:44

a cable at the Joker's leg, wrapping the

34:46

other end around a gargoyle.

34:48

The statue breaks off and pulls the

34:50

Joker down, making him lose his grip

34:53

and fall to his death. That

34:55

was good. Yeah. As

34:57

Batman and Vicky try to pull themselves back up, the

34:59

ledge breaks away and they start to fall. Batman

35:02

quickly fires a cable hook up toward the tower

35:04

while grabbing Vicky with the other arm.

35:07

The hook catches and the two are suspended

35:09

mid-air, safe. At a press conference, Harvey Dent

35:11

reads a letter from Batman saying that Gotham

35:13

has earned its rest from a wave of

35:15

crime, but if evil should ever arise again,

35:17

they should call him.

35:20

Then Knox asks how Commissioner Gordon answers

35:23

that they'll use a bat signal and shines a

35:26

bat with a bat signal into the

35:28

sky. Vicky leaves Knox behind to continue

35:30

her investigation instead of getting into a

35:32

limo with Alfred and sets off for

35:34

Bruce Manor. And as they drive off,

35:36

we can see Batman standing on top of a building.

35:38

Yes, Wayne Manor. Bruce Manor?

35:41

I'm just reading

35:43

what the good people of the

35:45

Batman wiki have read. Bruce Manor, I think,

35:47

is a patter writer for the Oscars.

35:49

Bruce Manor. Bruce Manor. As

35:53

they drive off, we can see Batman standing on top of

35:55

a building in front of the bat signal in the night

35:57

sky. And

36:00

that's how perfect film ends. It

36:02

is perfect. There was this moment

36:06

that we didn't talk about when he's

36:09

about to carry Vicki out of the way.

36:11

He's like, how much do you weigh? And

36:14

then he gets like a little more than 108. Yes!

36:17

Brutal. Why are you asking? Why

36:19

are you saying it's wrong? I just was

36:21

like... Why is the weight so

36:23

low? Yes! It can't

36:25

be true. And then also, you

36:28

can look at her and know if you

36:30

can lift her. Okay? Just like...

36:32

What are we doing here? Yeah.

36:34

He's not doing physics for every grappling

36:37

hook he's shooting up. Totally! He's

36:39

like 108 plus 1000 plus 2000. He's

36:42

just fly, Batman. He just flies.

36:44

He lifts her up. The one

36:47

case Batman could never solve was

36:50

his love interest body bouncing

36:52

there. He's obsessed. Does he

36:54

just not save fatties? What if I

36:56

was like, Batman, help! He was like,

36:58

sorry, fatty. You're on your own.

37:00

My cord can only hold 108. Okay.

37:03

Alright. Well, I guess I'll just

37:06

be here and get robbed. Pretty fucked

37:08

up. Batman's the worst. Okay.

37:11

I've changed my mind. Thank

37:14

you, Taryn. Yeah.

37:16

So Batman grossed 40.49

37:19

million during its opening weekend and became the

37:22

fastest film to earn 100 million

37:24

reaching it in 11 days. 10

37:26

days plus late night previews. Despite

37:29

the film's box office over 400 million

37:31

against a budget of no more than 48 million, Warner

37:34

Brothers claimed it ended up losing

37:36

35.8 million and not likely to

37:38

ever show a profit which has

37:41

been attributed to a case of Hollywood accounting.

37:43

What? What does that mean? Yeah. This

37:46

is why we strike. Yeah. Oh, this is why

37:48

we're on strike and they lied about Batman. It's bullshit.

37:51

It's a good one. Fuzzy

37:53

math. Fuzzy math. We

37:55

made 400 million but we lost 35 million.

37:57

35 million. So we're in debt.

38:00

Also the merchandising on this must

38:02

have been just absolutely insane. I

38:04

mean I had action figures, clothing,

38:06

McDonald's, toys, burger king cups. I

38:10

mean it was everywhere. And then you're

38:13

also saying the thing about Jack Nicholson making so much

38:15

money off of it. Yeah. So it's just like long

38:17

term we know that's bullshit. Yeah. Okay.

38:19

Miles. It currently holds a 76%

38:21

rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of

38:23

the film's release audiences hated Michael Keaton's casting

38:25

as Batman. The movie was fresh off the

38:27

heels of the release of Beetlejuice so saw

38:29

some of them more as the Joker. The

38:32

backlash was so severe that Warner Brothers received

38:34

over 50,000 letters complaining about the cast. So

38:37

do we- is that just tweets now?

38:39

That's tweets now because I don't- like

38:41

who's writing a letter? Yeah.

38:43

Heeling it up, getting some stamps. And who's opening

38:46

it? Like I feel like they don't care if

38:48

someone sent like a negative letter now. Maybe the

38:50

accountant who was supposed to track that 38

38:52

million dollars was busy reading all the hate mail.

38:54

Yeah. They were losing money! No

38:57

more money! Ugh. That's so dumb.

39:00

50,000 letters complaining about Michael Keaton. That's pretty fucking

39:02

funny. Seems like a lot. Yeah. He

39:04

does- he does- there's a clip of Keaton.

39:07

He wins like the People's Choice Award or

39:09

whatever like for best actor and

39:11

he says- he says in his acceptance speech

39:13

like keep writing those letters. Aww. Like

39:16

kinda uh- kinda F-U. He

39:18

has a good sense of humor. I love us. Yeah. Sassy

39:20

man with a jerry curl. He

39:23

hosted SNL when I was on the show. It

39:25

was the week of my birthday too. Wow!

39:28

And me and Bobby Moynihan got to write

39:30

the monologue. We wrote a sketch and

39:32

they're like this is good as you beat- we'll make it the

39:34

monologue. And so Bobby and

39:36

I got- I play- I got to

39:39

dress up. I had

39:41

the best department heads in the world dress

39:43

me up as Jack Nicholson's Joker. Wow. And

39:45

then Bobby was Danny DeVito's penguin. We're

39:48

looking at a picture. When you'll go see the next one. Oh

39:50

my god. It was an

39:53

exceptional exceptional week. It was a

39:55

very fun week. We also- Bobby

39:57

dressed up as- as- as Otheau and

39:59

I- I dressed up as Catherine O'Hara from

40:01

Beetlejuice and we did like a little scene from

40:03

back to. It was

40:05

one of the most fun weeks just cause it was

40:08

that like, I was a child and you were a

40:10

hero and now you're here and like dreams do come

40:12

true. And then a couple

40:14

of months ago, I was out to dinner

40:16

for my wife's birthday and

40:18

Michael Keaton walks into the restaurant and

40:21

like, and I'm like, Did he looking good? Did he

40:23

look, he looks, oh God, he looks so good. He's

40:25

so good. He's got his salt

40:27

and pepper, never tasted so delicious. And

40:31

he, and he's like kind of putting

40:33

eyes over the table. And

40:36

I got so in my head. I was like, this is

40:38

my, he's like, one of my childhood heroes and he's here

40:40

and I worked with him. I could say hi, right? And

40:42

my four wife is at her birthday dinner. It's like, Darren,

40:45

let's finish the meal. And you're walking

40:47

out, if he makes eye contact, go over and say

40:50

hi. And I was like, yeah, yeah, that's the plan.

40:52

You're the best wife. That's so smart. And

40:56

we walk out and I kind of like, kind

40:58

of side-eyeing his table all the time. And he looks up

41:00

and so I make a beeline and I go, Hey, Michael,

41:02

hey, it's Darren. We did SNL together. He's like, Oh yeah,

41:04

yeah, how are you man? And I was like, nice sight

41:06

come in. And then he's like, Hey, yeah, yeah, we love

41:09

this place. You live in the area? And so, Oh yeah,

41:11

we're just kind of down the street with a couple of

41:13

blocks away. It's like, yeah, yeah, we're worthless by two. We're

41:15

here all the time. And I was like, yeah, we love it.

41:17

It's our neighborhood restaurant. It's like, okay, great, great, great. Well, Hey, if

41:19

you see me here again in the future, feel free to just leave

41:21

me alone. It was the best. That

41:29

was my immediate feeling. It was

41:31

like, I have to leave. I got to

41:34

get out of here. I'm obsessed, but also

41:36

got inside. It

41:38

was perfect. Leave me alone. And

41:41

we all laughed and we said, that was my

41:43

hismium. Yeah, that was my hismium. Have a great

41:45

day. Have a great day. And it was so

41:48

funny. It was so perfect. Well, cause also like

41:50

you might then start to run into him a

41:52

lot. And it's kind of like, it's a funny

41:54

joke, but it's like, you'll see me again here.

41:56

If you come here a lot, let's not do

41:58

this again. Exactly. Another

42:00

great bit inversely was Jeff Goldblum who I like just

42:02

was that a premiere and I introduced myself I was

42:05

like such a huge fan. I love me. It's like

42:07

this is just good good good. Hey, well, please keep

42:09

in touch I

42:12

don't want to disturb you anymore. I just want to say thank

42:14

you for your work. Yes. Oh my god He's

42:18

really nice. I met him once and I was

42:20

in Jurassic World. I didn't say that Cuz

42:23

I just was like good you might not have seen it.

42:25

I don't care I don't know and

42:27

then but he was so warm and I gave me a

42:29

big hug and I took a picture and I was like

42:31

Hugging me in the picture and I was like this is

42:33

a great picture. That's nice. I think really loves people I

42:35

was in York He was in the pillow

42:38

man I think on Broadway at the time and

42:40

I was in Times Square or not like by the

42:42

theater district and uh I like

42:44

rounded a corner and he was rounding a corner

42:46

and we like almost bumped into each other

42:49

and I just screamed Hug me like you love me and

42:52

he went okay and he did And

42:54

then we just went about our I love

42:56

that story. It was wild. He's great. That's

42:58

a great thing to say He's

43:01

never been in a Batman movie. He should be in

43:03

a Batman movie. Yeah. Oh my god He'd

43:06

be a great villain. He would be a great villain.

43:09

Yes. He could do a maniacal laugh. Yes. Yeah

43:13

All right Hahahaha

43:19

Let's get to our Trivia

43:22

segment no way So

43:25

this you did touch on this so Robin Williams

43:27

was offered the role of Joker when Jack Nicholson

43:29

hesitated He'd even accepted the role when producers approached

43:31

Nicholson again and told him Williams would take the

43:33

part if he did not Nicholson

43:35

took the role and Williams was released now that's

43:37

that is so fucked up Williams presented being used

43:39

as bait and not only refused to play Riddler

43:41

in Batman forever But also refused to be

43:43

involved in any Warner Brothers productions until

43:46

the studio apologized and that is star

43:48

power. That's amazing I mean to have the

43:50

role to have it and have it taken away That

43:53

actually really and he would have been amazing. He

43:55

would have been so good. That's so crazy boy.

43:57

Oh boy What a mean business very

43:59

mean Michael Keaton was worried that

44:02

Batman's secret identity would, in reality,

44:04

what? Oh, in reality

44:06

would be fairly easy to uncover. Robert

44:08

Wohl. Robert

44:10

Wohl? Robert Wohl? At Bruce

44:12

Manor? And

44:14

discussed ideas with Simber into better disguise

44:16

the character, including using contact

44:19

lenses. In the end, Keaton decided

44:21

to perform Batman's voice at a

44:23

lower register than Bruce Wayne's, a

44:25

technique which has since become a

44:27

key part of future portrayals of

44:29

Batman in film, television, and video

44:31

games. Wow. Context is kind

44:34

of a good idea, though, because it's like enough to

44:36

throw you off. But like, who's stopping to put, I

44:38

guess he does have to put the whole outfit on,

44:40

so like what's the, a couple of seconds? But

44:42

then sometimes you get messed up and you have to like do it again. Yeah. He's

44:45

really wasting time. Tim

44:49

Burton makes a cameo as one of the Joker's goons in

44:51

the museum scene. I didn't catch that. I

44:53

don't know Mr. Burton at all. Honestly, I've

44:55

seen him, but I don't know that I would really recognize his

44:57

face. Can we pull up a picture? Yeah. What

45:00

does Mr. Burton look like? And why am I calling him Mr. Burton? He's

45:02

got sunglasses on. He's wearing like a beret or something.

45:07

Like it's like a beret backwards.

45:09

Yeah. But he

45:12

was a cow art. He was

45:14

an artist first. He was an

45:16

animator for Disney. And

45:18

he worked on the Black Cauldron and Oliver

45:20

& Company. Like

45:22

he was a visual artist, like literally drawing the cells.

45:26

And then wanted to be a filmmaker and did a couple of shorts. And

45:29

then Paul Rubens, he also did have the enough

45:31

to be groans I think. And

45:33

then got him to direct Pee Wee and the rest

45:36

of the history. That's crazy. Oh, interesting. His

45:39

movies now make sense to me that

45:41

he started an animation. Yeah. Because it

45:43

seems like he's bringing animation to life. He

45:45

has a very visual aesthetic. Yeah. At

45:48

the time of its release, comic book fans

45:50

reacted negatively to the Joker murdering Bruce's parents.

45:54

In the comics, Joe Chill is

45:56

responsible. Joe fucking

45:58

Chill. Is

46:01

it Joe cools brother? Who's Joe cools? One

46:03

Snoopy's cools? Another

46:11

Snoopy I'd be really happy But

46:14

who is Joe chill? I don't know. Taryn do you

46:17

know? Joe chill yeah,

46:19

he appears in later films. You'll

46:21

you will experience a Joe chill

46:23

in Batman Begins a

46:25

cinematic Joe chill But

46:28

they did not like Them crossing

46:30

over and because I saw this when I was so

46:32

young I always thought it was like cannon the Joker

46:34

was the one but but But

46:38

yeah, Joe like Thomas

46:41

Wayne Bruce's dad is this big

46:43

billionaire magnet sort of thing and

46:45

and and a doctor as well

46:49

and Joe chill Mugs them

46:51

was like down on his luck because Gotham

46:53

is sort of like Chicago There's New York

46:55

elements too, but it's always been more Chicago

46:57

and metropolis. He's always been a little more,

46:59

New York They

47:04

left a movie singing the mask of Zorro Bruce

47:07

and his and his parents and Joe chill Mugs

47:10

them and then panics and and kills both his

47:12

parents in front of him. Oh Yeah

47:16

Well, well writer Sam ham

47:18

which he can The

47:22

segue of trauma of parent murder into

47:24

saying Sam Well,

47:26

Sam ham said it was Burton's idea to have

47:28

the Joker murder Wayne's parents He said the writers

47:30

strike was going on and Tim had the right

47:33

other writers do that I will also hold innocent

47:35

to Alfred letting Vicki Vale into the bat cave

47:38

fans were ticked off with that and I agree That

47:40

would have been Alfred's last day of employment and we

47:42

mad Yeah, but so

47:44

the other writers were on strike or

47:46

like he was on strike, but other writers still

47:48

wrote. I'm like what? To

47:51

dance They

47:56

had to damn they just had you okay,

47:58

we're gonna take a quick break we'll be back

48:01

with more Batman after this. We're

48:08

back! Holy Batman! Batman in this

48:10

new segment will rate Michael Keaton

48:13

on the definitive newcomers Batman scale.

48:15

We'll use our phones to rank

48:17

this Batman across five unique characteristics.

48:19

Preparedness, how prepared is this Batman? Does

48:21

he get to use his little gadgets

48:23

and tools, detective ability, does this Batman

48:25

get to be a little detective? Is

48:27

he good at mystery solving? Voice gravelliness,

48:30

how gravelly is this Batman's voice? Sadness,

48:32

how lonely brooding emos is Batman? And

48:34

finally, hotness, horniness, how hot and how

48:36

horny is this Batman? I

48:38

love it. Can I borrow your QR code because this

48:40

game is far away. Okay.

48:50

I'm working on my hotness, horniness

48:52

scale. Yeah, that one takes a

48:54

minute. Really just trying to tap

48:56

back into that that feeling of

48:58

seven year old. Oh,

49:03

everything jumped. Okay, great.

49:05

So let's see how we rated this Batman.

49:08

We gave this Batman an 85.7% preparedness. I

49:12

mean, yeah, I think he was pretty prepared.

49:15

But it wasn't exactly, I almost feel like

49:17

the previous one from the 60s, he had

49:19

like every single thing ever. He had some

49:21

kind of repellent. Yeah, it's kind of changing

49:23

how I see him in terms of his

49:25

preparedness. Detective ability,

49:27

he got an 81%. I felt

49:29

like when he didn't immediately

49:31

piece together that Joker killed his parents,

49:34

I thought you're not a great detective. But

49:36

there was like some good chemistry detecting, right?

49:38

Where he's like buying all the products and

49:41

he's sample. Yeah, and

49:43

then swerving swooping up the balloon.

49:45

He stole my balloons. Voice

49:53

gravel in a 71.3%. Yeah,

49:56

I mean, it was gravelly, but it wasn't, it's

49:58

almost like not even the pair. we

50:00

have now of it being gravelly? Yeah. So

50:03

I'm seeing it as less gravelly. Yeah. I

50:05

went pretty low on this because I would

50:07

say it was husky, more of a husk.

50:10

And like a whispered husk more than

50:12

a gravel where like Christian Bale, as

50:14

you will see, like goes full on

50:16

like... Oh yeah. This

50:20

is full on. Oh yeah, Christian

50:22

Bale. You know? I know. You

50:25

got hot Kilmer. Bill Kilmer like looks

50:27

hot but is like watching paint

50:29

dry a little bit. You

50:32

got Batman Returns which is more... but

50:35

a very different movie. It's like a

50:37

very very different movie. And

50:40

then you've got Kilmer and then George

50:42

Clooney who's you know, he got a

50:45

good paycheck. But

50:47

then Christian Bale does a very very

50:49

good job. But Keaton is still my

50:51

number one. He's my number one always

50:54

will be. He's the best. Other than

50:56

Kevin Conroy, are you doing animated series?

50:59

Yes, we are. Yeah, we are gonna at

51:01

least do one I think. Yes. There's

51:04

the movie, there's the Mask of the Phantasm which is

51:06

pretty... We're doing that. What are your thoughts on it?

51:08

Because I do love a cartoon. Love

51:10

Batman the Animated Series. Great. One

51:13

of the first animated shows to do their

51:15

art on black cells.

51:18

So all they added the color, right? Because normally

51:20

it's like translucent or a white page. Yeah. So

51:22

you would start on a black page and then

51:24

add in color because the shadows and the... Oh,

51:26

that's actually really cool. I've

51:28

only seen like white and like the clear cells.

51:31

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No,

51:33

it's beautiful. And they use Danny Elfman's score

51:35

for the theme song too which is awesome.

51:38

Oh cool. All right. Well,

51:40

yeah, we'll see. We'll see. I don't know.

51:43

I love a cartoon. We're open-minded. Yeah.

51:46

Okay. All right,

51:49

whatever you say. Sadness,

51:52

74.7. He seems pretty sad. Yeah. I

51:55

thought he was like sad-ish. I guess it was sad when he was like, I haven't

51:57

been... in

52:00

many rooms in my own home. Yeah,

52:02

yeah, yeah. A little lonely. Alfred

52:05

could show you the room. You should eat in a different

52:07

room every night. Yeah. Yeah. His turtleneck moment

52:09

in the alley, too. You know what I

52:11

mean? Really got mumbled up. And laying the

52:14

roses down on the street like that. Yeah,

52:16

that was sad. He was sad. It's sad.

52:19

OK, hotness and horniness, 78.3%. Who

52:21

gave him that low one? I'm

52:24

thinking it's Taryn. Taryn. I went

52:26

pretty low on the hotness, the horniness.

52:28

Yeah. I

52:30

think the only time you get a real

52:32

shirtless, like, rips him and swim upside down,

52:34

doing the sit-ups, like a bat in

52:37

the middle of the night, as memory serves. Yes.

52:39

Not a lot of skin. No. I'm

52:42

sort of just generally attracted to the character

52:45

at this point. So I'm like, I'm going

52:47

to go with, that's pretty hot. Yeah.

52:49

Yeah. I don't know. Maybe

52:52

you said you first saw it, but there's

52:54

a bad energy to this Batman. It's like,

52:56

yeah. It's a little bit like, I'm looking

52:58

out, I'll take care of you here. We

53:00

should open more bottles of champagne, like hosting

53:03

a party kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah.

53:06

Yeah, sorry. Sorry, I went to low. No, you

53:08

don't have to do anything you don't want to

53:11

do. Your opinion. Hotness,

53:13

horniness. I don't know. The

53:15

sit-ups, the black rubber suit. Again,

53:18

you're about to see one of the most, I

53:20

think, beautiful

53:22

performances physically and emotionally in

53:24

Batman Returns with Michelle Pfeiffer,

53:27

who and do

53:29

yourself a favor before you see the movie

53:31

or just after you see the movie, watch

53:33

how she worked the whip. There's

53:36

a scene in the department store, she uses a whip. That's

53:39

the only spoiler part. But you can watch

53:41

online the tape. She did it in one

53:43

place and she's actually doing all the whipping.

53:46

I actually have seen that clip out of

53:48

context and it is amazing. It's very impressive.

53:50

Yeah, it's mind-blowing. So it'll be cool to

53:52

see that in context and see what is

53:54

happening. And why she's doing

53:56

that. Why would she ever? A

53:59

whip? Well, it's

54:01

time for her segment five kapows where

54:03

we were listening We read reviews from

54:06

our own listeners because we value how

54:08

you guys praise us. Yes This

54:10

is a five-star review from girly grace. I know

54:12

so much more about wig. I Love

54:17

listening to you guys chat about stuff. You're not

54:19

into in the words of Nicole. I tea he

54:22

the whole time Also, I now know

54:24

what makes a good wig We

54:26

haven't seen any wigs yet like we

54:29

built in previous movies we've been obsessed with bad

54:31

wigs the all of

54:33

Marvel most of the order

54:36

all women Most of the

54:38

women made the the wig department angry Good

54:41

wigs for anybody, especially Charlotte Johansson like

54:43

you really did someone dirty and they

54:46

hate her But

54:51

you're right all of the wigs and sore are

54:53

terrible Yeah,

54:56

hopefully we'll get some bad wigs coming up because that's always

54:58

fun. I do love a bad wig. Yeah So,

55:01

okay in addition to Apple reviews, we're

55:03

also reading reviews from letterbox Also,

55:06

we're gonna give each film a one sentence review

55:08

ourselves and a star rating and if you don't

55:10

know what letterbox is Oh, I'll tell you it's

55:12

a social platform where people can write reviews of

55:14

films You can follow the show on letterbox at

55:16

newcomers. Are you on letterbox? Taryn y'all?

55:18

I Started a

55:21

letterbox and I think the

55:23

reason I went on was because I saw Coco and

55:26

I needed people to know how much I loved I

55:29

love Coco. It's such a good movie. My daughter loves

55:31

it and I've now seen it like ten times I

55:33

love it, but I immediately thought of Coco Montrese

55:35

from RuPaul's Drag Race You

55:38

saw a drag queen and went on letterbox

55:40

and I was your out of your mind

55:42

in Nicole The movie Coco

55:44

none of that adds up I

55:49

would have gone on for Simone. We were team Simone on

55:51

our course Okay,

55:55

so here's a letterbox review and Taryn we are

55:57

gonna ask for your one sentence review of this film just a

55:59

few Three stars from

56:01

Adam bolt trying to work out the tactical advantage

56:03

of making a suit with a neck that can't

56:05

move Good

56:08

point. Uh-huh. This is

56:10

from Liam F. Imagine my disappointment

56:12

to discover that Danny Elfman Who

56:16

wrote the musical score for the movie is actually 5 10

56:19

and not the size of an elf So that's

56:21

your problem with the film interesting look it can

56:23

be anything and that's what's fun about it And that

56:25

was a four star review So,

56:27

um, what's the one sentence sentence review

56:29

you would give this film Nicole? Mmm,

56:32

I think I'm gonna give it three stars And

56:37

this bat is not a man for

56:39

me. Okay Four

56:45

stars, I

56:47

think so my review is Tim

56:50

Burton's fantastic. I love

56:53

the characters Joker's wild

56:57

Okay, um, okay Finally

57:08

the dark and greedy dark night

57:10

we've wanted to see if the

57:12

cinema without the expense of losing

57:14

the fantastical fun asterisk

57:18

This movie taught me how to dream. Oh five

57:22

stars Wow Oh,

57:24

wow, I love

57:26

that review. It's better than mine and

57:28

I love it Perfect

57:38

so everyone out there please write a review of

57:40

our show on Apple podcast because we really need

57:42

57:44

57:56

I want to plug this podcast.

57:59

I've been a fan of both of yours for

58:01

so long. We've never gotten to

58:03

do anything ever, but nailed it.

58:05

It's by far the most watched

58:08

TV show in my, we will

58:10

repeat watch what we call Grandma

58:12

Pirate Donut episode. Because nothing makes

58:14

us- That one of them

58:16

is so funny. Nothing makes us laugh so

58:19

hard. And Lauren, I've been a fan of

58:21

yours for so, so long. And yours and

58:23

Ben's early show, like still one of the

58:25

best things on the internet, in my opinion.

58:28

Honored to be here. Thank you, Cheryl. Thank you so

58:30

much for being here. We appreciate

58:32

you so much. And we appreciate your loving

58:35

perspective on this film because it really helped

58:37

us love it more. It made me maybe

58:39

want to watch it again. That's maybe

58:42

crazy, but okay. I

58:44

mean, maybe we'll just rewatch

58:46

everything. The music. I

58:49

will say you guys never really, and I know

58:51

that's also another point of the podcast, but you

58:53

never tap into the music. And I would just

58:55

give a gentle, if you do

58:57

watch it again, Danny Elfman's

58:59

score to this film, truly

59:02

iconic, truly, truly iconic.

59:04

Yeah, I don't feel like I talk about music, but

59:06

I love the music. And I like to give this

59:09

sort of fantastical feeling.

59:11

If you're looking for new segments

59:13

moving forward, some little like,

59:15

what did the score score? I'm

59:17

not, that's not my job. I like

59:20

that. I like that. That's really

59:22

good. That is good. Okay,

59:24

thank you for that. Please welcome

59:26

our Taryn Killam suggested segment, what

59:29

is the score score? Yes, you have to get credit every

59:31

time. Every time we say it. And

59:33

reach out to her, she's in the seat of score bars,

59:36

will endorse that segment, so

59:38

she'll have a little extra cash. They're all

59:40

really good ideas. Oh, I like it. Associate

59:44

producer, Taryn Yellow. I love it. You're gonna

59:46

get credit. We'll

59:48

be back next week with the sequel to

59:50

this movie, Batman Returns. I

59:52

can't wait for Batman to return.

59:55

I'll see you then. Bye-bye. Bye-bye.
