RATING
Very interesting take on an easily overlooked contributing factor to education inequality that shows itself, in this case, over a 50+ year period with the dots spread apart widely. In classic Serial style, the tough topic is wrapped in an easy-to-understand, fun fashion while delivering a hard-hitting, absolutely-of-the-moment topic. While the investigation feels divisive at times, which is likely more a reflection of the listener (me?!), the resulting conclusions are clearly well-researched, and the subjects involved come off as honest and both well-intentioned, yet naive in way that is easy to identify with, making any thoughtful listener feel simultaneously educated and uncomfortably self-reflective. What makes it all so powerful is the uncomfort doesn't feel damning to anyone featured or the listener. In short Serial appears to have done it again, delivering the tip of the spear for Podcasts.
So much food for thought on this podcast. So much information about how meaning well may not actually end up doing good.
This is *essential* listening.
Can't believe this is continuing in public education present day. Good reporting on an important issue.
Did not like this, expected better from the Serial team. Didn't like host, felt she missed some blatant factors, and felt like she tried to cover a lot in a little amount of episodes.
Nice White Parents is a great case study highlighting how well-meaning white individuals can unintentionally make already racist systems worse. The show also highlights how prevalent school segregation still is in U.S. cities. I wish this show had been longer than five episodes; not only was the storyline great but the message is highly-needed.
This podcast came out just as I was considering the damage I myself have done in exactly this way, 15 years ago. It's helpful in exploring all the alternatives, and how those would have (not) worked out. Housing policy, because it is also education policy and therefore racial segregation policy, is one of the most underrated issues of our times. This is so important. If you are a nice white person who is "not racist" but chose a predominantly white neighborhood because it has a good school, this podcast is for you. As it is for me.
