Hello, and welcome to A Nightmare

0:12

Short Shop. My name

0:14

is Alison Belbews, pleased to be

0:16

your muse for this flash fiction

0:18

podcast. This

0:21

month's nightmare poem is The Let

0:23

Go by E. Catherine Tobler, narrated

0:26

by Stephanie Nicky. The

0:57

Let Go by E. Catherine Tobler. This

1:17

poem began as flash fiction and

1:20

was then whittled even smaller, perhaps

1:23

ironic given its subject. I

1:26

wrote this to explore how we

1:28

change in a relationship, how

1:30

it isn't always healthy or best for

1:32

us, or necessarily

1:35

consensual. We

1:37

give pieces of ourselves away,

1:40

we have pieces taken, we

1:42

cut ourselves down to nothing in the name

1:44

of love, and it

1:46

is both a horror and

1:48

a revelation. E.C.T.

1:54

I was not born in this field

1:56

of grass, but I'm anchored

1:58

by your leaving. Called,

2:01

you said, to a higher purpose, to

2:03

a higher being. What

2:07

was it to be called, to

2:10

be under such demand? I

2:13

have never been some one's choice, have

2:16

never been called to purpose.

2:20

I was not born in this field of

2:22

grass, but know what

2:24

it is to let everything go. The

2:28

summer into the autumn, the

2:30

autumn into the winter. The

2:32

grass withers the way my hands

2:34

have withered away, called

2:38

to purpose, so

2:40

that I may hold to nothing and

2:43

let everything go, always.

2:53

You have probably heard the name

2:55

Mary Queen of Scots, and maybe

2:57

you know the importance of

3:13

her legacy to the British monarchy, but how much

3:15

did you know about her life and what she

3:17

was really like? For instance, did you know that

3:19

she preferred to have her eggs scrambled, or that

3:22

giving gifts was her love language? In my

3:24

podcast, Vogueur History, we'll be talking about

3:26

all that and more during an eight-part mini-series

3:29

about the fascinating life of Mary Queen of Scots.

3:32

Vogueur History is a feminist women's history comedy

3:34

podcast where we don't shy away from the

3:36

messy, complicated lives of women from the olden

3:38

times. Particularly with women

3:41

in history, it's easier to use broad strokes

3:43

to portray who they were, and it's like

3:45

we forget they probably also had messy lives,

3:47

complicated relationships, and maybe things weren't as black

3:49

and white as they might seem in a textbook. something

4:00

about Mary Cram Scott.

4:03

Be sure to turn into my series about Mary

4:05

Cram Scott and check out the other incredible women

4:07

I've talked about while you're there. You can listen

4:09

and subscribe to Vulgar History wherever you get your

4:11

podcasts and learn more at vulgarhistory.com.

4:23

E. Catherine Tobler's short fiction has

4:26

appeared in Clark's World, the magazine

4:28

of fantasy and science fiction and

4:30

others. Her novella, The

4:32

Necessity of Stars, was a finalist

4:34

for the Nebula, Utopia, and Sturgeon

4:36

Awards. She currently edits

4:39

The Deadlands. This

4:42

story was taken from the pages of

4:44

Nightmare Magazine, which is edited by

4:46

Wendy Ann Wagner. The

4:48

podcast is produced by Skyboat Media

4:50

and the story and podcast are

4:53

copyright 2024. Host production

4:55

was by Alison Bill Buse and

4:57

our music was composed and performed by

4:59

Jack Kincaid. Once again, I

5:02

am Alison Bill Buse and I

5:05

hope this poem gave you something true.

Thank you for listening. you
