Nijo Castle was built by the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu, in 1600 as his Kyoto residence and western Japan power base. The massive palace building, now known as Ninomaru Palace, was completed in 1603. It echoes many of the new architectural forms developed in the Momoyama style. The entire building is decorated with exquisite decorations including sliding door paintings, carving, etc.
