How do you know when it is the right time to lean in?

This is such a great episode that we wanted to share it again!  Since recording this Kat has progressed her career in so many incredible ways! Go check her out over on LinkedIn and connect with her right here >> https://www.linkedin.com/in/katwellum-kent/

#Takeaways

  • Finding your own way of leadership really works
  • How to start making those steps and the importance of building habits with self promotion
  • How to notice if you are playing small through use of your own language
  • The benefits of having an external coach
  • How to showcase yourself rather than sell yourself

On today’s show we are thinking about how you know when it is the right time to lean in?  And what I mean by that is starting to think differently about your career progression, how you stand apart and building a self promotion strategy that gets you the results you REALLY want.

As a previous client of mine Kat and I were recently reviewing how far she has come by getting clear on what she wants and the impact that being more visible can have for her own ambitions and those around her.  Kathryn is a shining example of a woman who has definitely leaned in to owning who she is and the results speak for themselves.

Guest:

Kathryn Wellum-Kent is an accountant and business advisor working for MHA Monahans, one of the leading professional services firms in the South West, after spending the first 16 years of her career working at Deloitte.

She is passionate about working with start-up and scale-up companies that have big ambitions, and need support to achieve these, with particular focus on capturing & interpreting financial information needed for their business planning & decision making.

Beyond that though, Kathryn has a strong vision of how the industry needs to change to better support its clients, its staff and the wider community and is using her current role and her network to drive change and challenge traditional thinking. This work was recognised through being named one of the top 50 women in accounting in 2021.

She has also recently taken on the role of finance trustee at a charity based in Swindon called Inner Flame, which is working to support 16-25s not currently in education, employment or training who are experiencing barriers to independence or contributing to their community.

“An important part of leadership is finding your way of doing things rather than trying to be something else” Kathryn

“We have habits that don't often serve us and can be connected to staying small” Gemma

“You’ve got habits and you don’t even realise you are doing them” - Kathryn

“I stopped cutting my legs off before I had even started” - Kathryn

“I really wanted to work with someone who could work with me to help me understand some of the things that were holding me back and achieve what I wanted to in my career” - Kathryn

“All the things that we have worked on together have helped me talk about myself in a very authentic and open way” - Kathryn

“I’m not the kind of person who can sell; I don’t want to feel like i’m selling myself, selling my company - I just want to show people about me and what I am doing and I feel like that should speak for itself” - Kathryn

“You don’t have to throw yourself in the deep end it’s about building up these things gradually” - Gemma
