In this fourth episode of Non Neurotypical Art Students, I talk with Hattie. She is a senior year master students at the Non Linear Narrative of the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague and she diagnosed with three different neurotypes: dyspraxia, borderline personality disorder and she is in the process of diagnosing for ADD. We had a very personal conversation about our future, and how we can get in touch with the playfulness of our youth. Should we put our previous work in a retro perspective and see the value of it? We also talk about the process of making an artwork and how that looks like with a neurotype.

Dyspraxia, also known as developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD), is a common disorder that affects movement and co-ordination. Dyspraxia does not affect your intelligence. It can affect your co-ordination skills – such as tasks requiring balance, playing sports or learning to drive a car. Dyspraxia can also affect your fine motor skills, such as writing or using small objects. Unfortunately, dyspraxia is not well researched in the Netherlands in comparison with the United Kingdom. Also, the Dutch government doesn’t really support neurodivergent students as the UK does, by providing a laptop and extra help if necessary.

Next week I talk with Nabila, who has borderline personality disorder as well and we'll dive deeper into that.

Non Neurotypical Art Students (NNAS) is a platform create and hosted by me (Niels Otterman) where neurodivergent art students helps or contact other neurodivergent art students. Neurodivergent means that someone’s neurological development and state as atypical. It goes often hand in hand with neurotypes such as: ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD, Bipolar Disorder, Tourette’s, Dyslexia and many others. As a person who is diagnosed with autism at the age of 4 I want to portrait other art students and ask them what the academy can do to create a more neuro inclusive environment.
