Having grit is essential. John Robinson has had it since a young age. Raised in a biracial family in the 70’s in Chicago is only part of what made him who he is. John uses the word “chaotic” to describe growing up in his household, but he persevered. After paying and paving his way through Northern Illinois University, he went to work for Discover. While there John learned the ins and outs of a marketing function and eventually differentiated himself from the pack by spearheading major initiatives. He believes in taking on more.

John went on to climb the ladder at a total of ten different corporations. After eight severance packages and an eye opening experience that hit close to home while working for a health care company, John knew it was time to step away and forge a new path. He created Relative Health in order to take the pain away from discovering a health plan that fits the individual. At the time he knew little to nothing about software or CRM, but through grit he got it done. Through the process of launching Relative Health John utilized a noteworthy skill, application. To be specific, he saw what worked with companies that do a great job of aggregation such as Orbitz and Travelocity then applied it to suit the needs of Relative Health. During our conversation John emphasizes this process of application as a key takeaway for listeners.

After changes to the health care law, John decided to disband Relative Health. His focus turned to Backup CEO, the consulting company he was already running. Through Backup CEO, John coaches CEO’s on everything from navigating their next moves to understanding their problems and solutions. At one point I had to ask John if CEO’s are insecure. This is something I have often wondered about. His answer is intriguing to say the least.

John Robinson knows the value of his time so I’m extremely grateful to him for coming on the show and dropping knowledge.

Listen and learn.
