Derrick Kwa has led a very interesting life so far. As our second international guest on OE, Derrick joined me from Singapore for what turned out to be a great conversation. From dropping out of school at 16 to traveling across 10 countries in two years while playing semi-professional poker, Derrick shared his journey with us. The valuable advice he has to share with entrepreneurs comes from his experience with starting a marketing firm from scratch and making a habit of leaping in spite of fear. As a key take away, Derrick shares insight into breaking down a large goal into small actionable steps.
In this episode Derrick and I talk about:
• Derrick dropping out of school at 16.
• Derrick’s supportive mom.
• Reading blogs to get inspired.
• Emailing Seth Godin.
• The cost of not taking action becoming greater than the fear you may have.
• Gaining confidence in reaching out to people who can help you.
• Traveling to 10 countries in 2 years while playing semi-professional poker.
• Starting a marketing firm, Thousand True Fans.
• The importance of having the right support system as an entrepreneur.
• Learning to dive into the actual work of creating and running a business as opposed to remaining in a “learning” cycle out of fear.
• The importance of having a dependable team.
• Passion Blueprint podcast.
• Making change a daily ritual.
• “People don’t remember your failures unless your failures have gotten a lot of people killed.”
– Matthew Ebel
• The first step is usually the most difficult.
• Key Takeaway: Break your big dream down into small attainable steps and focus only on the current task at hand.
