I should write it down. How often do we say this to ourselves? We do all the time and then often neglect taking our own simple advice. As a result, we recall only parts of the whole. When we look back on past experiences we will tend to focus on small victories not the pain and wasted time that encompassed them. Throughout his career as an Attorney in New York City, Daniel Gershburg has learned it’s imperative to always take notes.

It keeps us honest and improves our ability to make sound decisions in the future.

I know what you might be thinking. Do I really need to listen to a podcast about taking notes? The answer is YES if Daniel Gershburg is doing the talking.

Due to his growing up in Brooklyn, Daniel was constantly exposed to go getters, hard workers, and people who were not afraid of taking risk. He attributes this a major reason as to why he never struggled with the idea of starting his own practice. Entrepreneurs surrounded and influenced him more than everyday employees. To “do your own thing” was the common thing.

Upon graduating law school, Daniel knew he was unable to work for anyone. In his own words, he’s unemployable. So, it only made sense for him to go at it on his own. How did he get his first clients in such a competitive space? By doing the work most would not want to do. He took on any cases he could get his hands on, regardless of their lack of glamour. This is an important lesson that can apply to more than a law practice. If you are starting out fresh with you’re own business, consider the fact you may need to work up to your ideal client. Also as Daniel mentions, those initial clients may very well give the amazing reviews you need to catch the attention of others.

During our conversation Daniel also talked about choosing the right mentors. He believes it’s great to have someone who helps keep you focused and motivated. However, in business it’s even more important to choose mentors who have had success and specialize in what you are attempting to accomplish. Remember, it’s perfectly ok to have more than one.

If you’re to have one key takeaway from this episode, I would strongly recommend it’s the commitment of taking notes. It was interesting to hear Daniel’s perspective on how much this simple act can change our behavior. We consume a massive amount of information everyday, much of which is not stored. This, combined with our selective memory and unintentional glorification of the past means writing down real results, true outcomes, critical notes, and important interactions as they occur will definitely help to better guide our decisions.
