Jennings and Roderick have a gift for picking out little side alleys of history and spinning an hour or so haveing delightfully witty back and forth conversations about the chosen topic with plenty of amusing tangents and observations about contemporary life. If you think Jennings is just some kind of trivia machine...if you think that a Jeopardy champion couldn't possible be an thoughtful and funny and wise person, because he must be too busy speed-reading encyclopedias to cram facts into his noggin...okay, I admit I used to think these things about Jennings, because I never actually watched him on Jeopardy, and even if I had, the show doesn't let the full person really shine through. Jennings shines through here, as does his partner Roderick, a former alternative rock band leader who, like Jennings, may expand you idea of how interesting and errudite a rock musician can be. This has become one of my very favorite podcasts, because the topics and points made often float around my head for days or weeks, unlike most current affairs, news, and political shows. It's entertaining armchair history...no original scholarship, no interviews with experts...but it's as much about the friendship and worldviews of the hosts as it is about the topics they bandy about.
