Hey, this is On The Fly with Jon Gill...
where I speak to Inspiring, creative, inventive people pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology.
This is episode 5 with English YouTuber Robbie Cumming!
Robbie has been documenting his narrowboat life on the canals of the UK for several years. He captures everything on his mobile phone and edits on a tablet and posts to YouTube where he currently has just over 17,000 subscribers.
YouTube and Canal Boat Diaries (BBC)
About a year ago he was approached by BBC Four to adapt his YouTube format into a short series of TV episodes. Subsequently five episodes of Canal Boat Diaries were broadcast in October 2019. Series two is currently filming under lockdown conditions.
Amazingly Robbie is using the same mobile approach with some additional GoPro and drone footage from the BBC side of production.
We talk about his process and what this means for the future of TV and mobile content creators.
Song of the episode
Easy! Room To Roam by the Water Boys (from 1990 fact fans, which means I've final broken the cycle of hits from the 1970s by two decades!)
Here's a great version recorded live with an orchestra in Huntley, Scotland.
Conveniently, to find Robbie, his videos, BBC page, music, clothing, social media and Patreon page, you need only one link: www.robbiecumming.com
Robbie's recommendation is "ETTV" on Youtube... mesmerising!
Apps
Robbie uses a couple of apps – you may be familiar with them by now... but here's the links anyway:
Filming: ProCamera (iOS only)
Editing: Luma Fusion (iOS only)

I use phones and tablets to capture, edit and share my short films and I can help you to do the same…
I run learning sessions for all ages – anyone wanting to use video to tell their own story.
Like most educators just now I’m trying to inspire people via Zoom from my spare room. But I love it.
So if you’d like to learn more about telling your story using a mobile then please get in touch.
