With Mariottez Mario
0:04
Lopez joining me now in studio from Fleabag
0:06
and Stranger Things. Actor and comedian
0:09
Frett Gellman. Welcome to the show Man. I have a
0:11
big fan, so I'm excited that you're here
0:13
and I got the opportunity to meet you in person.
0:15
You were awesome this last season Stranger
0:18
Things. I thought were a scene stealer. Thank
0:20
you, Thank you so much. Man. It's it's
0:22
crazy to be here, crazy to get to talk to you.
0:24
I'm a huge fan of yours as well. Oh, thank
0:26
you Mann, thank you appreciate that. And um,
0:28
big year for you. So did
0:31
you get into comedy first
0:33
or was it sort of you you got into the creative community
0:35
at this sort of all at the same time. Um,
0:37
I wanted to do comedy since like I was
0:39
a little kid, since I was like six years old.
0:42
Uh no, I don't know. I saw like the Marx
0:44
Brothers. I saw this Marx Brothers movie the
0:47
night at the Opera. So like then, like as
0:49
a kid, I was doing like you know, like
0:52
little feeder classes and things like
0:54
that. And then in my high school I got
0:56
like heavily involved in the theater department, and then I
0:58
got like more into a little
1:00
more into the drama side of things too.
1:03
And then I went to school for drama, you know,
1:05
for theater, and then uh so I'm
1:07
trained. I'm a trained actor, Mario. I
1:09
went to North Carolina School of the Arts classical
1:12
training program. Yeah, I learned.
1:14
I am you know, I am conditioned to
1:16
act Shakespeare to reach the back row.
1:19
You've got the pipe for it, thank you, because
1:22
when you spout off anything
1:24
of of eloquence
1:26
or with gravitas. I was like, I believe it. Nobody's
1:28
ever you gotta have the pipe or else you can't believe
1:30
it. Right, No, nobody's ever really ever telling me like louder
1:35
happened a lot. Yeah, so let's
1:37
let's start with the stranger things. You
1:40
became one of the breakout stars of season
1:42
three. When when did you realize that everyone
1:45
was digging your character? Like right away?
1:47
It happens like right, it's cool. I mean, I
1:49
mean with the season three, Uh, it happened
1:52
right away, and uh it just explodes
1:55
like that first day that it comes out. The fans
1:57
are just so ready they jump
1:59
on it, and you get a sense of how
2:01
it's gonna go. And um,
2:04
I was just I was so I am so psyched.
2:06
It's not just like for the reaction, but because
2:09
I love the show so much, you know, I
2:12
was, oh, yeah, I watched the first
2:14
season in like a day for real, and you
2:16
were in the second one too. I was in the second season,
2:18
you know, not as uh not, like I
2:21
wasn't as integral to the storyline
2:23
as I was in season three. But the
2:25
the Duffers did me a solid I'm very grateful,
2:29
And um, how did the role come about? It was
2:31
a basic audition, it was. Yeah,
2:33
it was a crazy audition. I remember like being in the
2:35
audition and like and you got like sides
2:37
that weren't the script. You didn't know really anything
2:40
about it. You got like a bit of a description
2:42
of who he was. He was like kind of paranoid.
2:46
Was pretty I think it was like that he was like paranoid,
2:48
like in a bit of a conspiracy theorists. You're
2:50
not sure if he's a good guy or a bad
2:52
guy. And like the scene was like
2:54
it felt like this like dark alley or
2:56
like in the middle of nowhere type you're
2:59
having dark, but I mean you've got a charm
3:01
to it, so he's yeah, yeah, he
3:03
could have been No. I was always like I went to the deference.
3:05
I was like, this is like the Richard Dreyfuss of
3:07
this show. This is like how Richard Dreyfuss
3:09
is like in Jaws. Like that's what Murray
3:12
is like in this And they
3:14
they agreed with that, and I think and that's
3:16
how they saw it. Wasn't that they just agreed
3:18
with that. I just picked up on that.
3:20
That was sort of an influence for them too. Did
3:22
you know any Russian prior to that, because
3:24
that was flowing off the tongue? No, really, no,
3:27
no, no, I had I had a very good
3:29
coach. I actually I had a woman walk up
3:31
to me the other night and and start speaking to
3:33
me in Russian. Like I
3:37
really was like a
3:40
lot, no, you know, I mean you get like a lot
3:42
to memorize, you know, you memorize your lines
3:44
and then you get new lines on something else to memorize,
3:46
so you kind of, you know, you lose it. But
3:49
yeah, I had a very good coach. I had a very
3:51
good coach. So it was it was going to I practiced
3:54
a lot, like almost to the point where it was like, oh
3:56
wait, I have English lines too, Yeah,
3:58
I should probably memorize that do
4:01
we know about your character
4:04
for season four? I don't. I don't.
4:06
They keep everything very underlock and
4:08
key. But I'm hoping, I'm very much hoping
4:10
that that they bring me back because I
4:13
love the show. It's like, you know, it's a little family.
4:15
It doesn't feel like that gigantic monster
4:18
that it is. You know, when you're when you're working
4:21
on it, it feels like we're all, you
4:23
know, supportive of each other, and they're to just you
4:25
know, and make this as best as we can. I like
4:27
how to kind of broke it up into like three different little storylines
4:29
and everyone comes together. I know. When
4:32
you get to see that, well, I hope you're back. Oh, thank you
4:34
for me too. Yeah. You're also
4:36
on Fleabag, which is critically
4:39
acclaimed up for eleven Emmys. Congratulations,
4:42
thank you. Oh my god. It's so hard to stand out these
4:44
days with so much content out
4:46
there. Um, but what a nice surprise right
4:48
for them. It's amazing. It's wild
4:50
wild. I mean, I'm not like,
4:53
yeah, it's it's it's like
4:55
surprising because it happened,
4:57
but not surprising because of how proud I
5:00
am of the show and like Phoebe's
5:02
a total genius too. You know, I get
5:04
to work with these uh geniuses,
5:06
Mario, so I'm very lucky actor, and
5:09
uh yeah, it was, it was. It's
5:11
it's great. It's great that it's being recognized
5:14
like this, and that you know the show
5:16
her Sean who Clifford
5:18
who plays my wife Olivia Coleman obviously
5:21
and you know, uh Christen's got Thomas
5:23
Fiona show. Yeah, it's it's wild.
5:25
It's interesting because both of your brother of your characters
5:27
are are They're conflicted,
5:30
flawed, but still very likable, thank
5:32
you, which I think is a testament
5:34
to you. But about how do you find empathy for these characters?
5:37
I think you know you I fortunately,
5:41
you know, for my job, but like unfortunately
5:43
at times for my life relate to you know,
5:45
the feeling of alienation that the characters
5:47
feel, you know, and I think you gotta really
5:50
hit that like what they want and what
5:52
what they don't have, and like all the
5:55
painful things that's happened to them that have
5:57
led them to this point, you know, And then you can
6:00
because you can't you can't ever think like, oh, this
6:02
character is a weirdo or this character is a jerk.
6:04
You know, you have to be approaching
6:06
it from how they see
6:09
themselves. And I think, I mean, I think they also
6:11
think that they themselves are something's
6:14
wrong with them, but they still
6:16
want to connect. Everybody wants to connect tomorrow.
6:19
Everybody wants love, and when you don't
6:21
get love, weird
6:23
things happen. Right
6:25
about that. Uh, And you're now
6:28
joining yet another show the audience show
6:30
Mr. Mercedes for season
6:32
three. For those not familiar to us about
6:34
it, well, it's adapted from this
6:37
novel series by Stephen King and
6:40
it's it's written by David E. Kelly,
6:42
stars Brendan Gleeson. It's about like this
6:44
detective that Brendan Gleeson uh
6:47
plays, where the in the first two
6:49
seasons they were tracking, you know, they
6:51
were kind of like he's
6:54
he's up to uh, you know, against
6:57
the serial killer in Mr. Mercedes who
6:59
like mowed down all these people with his car.
7:02
But that guy at the end of season two is
7:05
dead and there's a new villain. But the
7:08
old villain from the previous two seasons
7:10
is still like his memory and the trauma of
7:12
what he's done is kind of lurking around. And I play
7:15
I play a lawyer
7:17
to this character named
7:20
Lou who's played by Brita Wool who
7:22
murdered the serial killer at the end of season
7:24
two. And so that's
7:26
my first lawyer job. Yeah,
7:28
man, I got to do like monologues
7:31
to juries, cross
7:33
examinations. Yeah, I was crazy,
7:35
it was being in that courtroom. And uh,
7:38
it's funny because we like shot in in
7:40
Charleston in like late
7:42
spring, early summer, and it's supposed
7:44
to be Ohio in the winter, so I'm like in
7:47
all these wool suits. So
7:49
I hope people don't think that my character is like having a
7:51
heart attack. You've
7:58
shot stranger things in Atlantic correct
8:00
in Georgia and this show
8:02
in North Carolina and Charleston South
8:06
and excuse me, London
8:09
in London, So you have yet to work in l a
8:12
project in a while. In a while,
8:15
no, I, I mean I've worked a lot here. But
8:17
it's great to travel around and
8:19
like live other places. That's it's fun.
8:22
And yeah, that's cool right there, like a gypsy.
8:24
How long I've been rocking the beard now? Years?
8:27
Really a lot of years? Yeah, nine years
8:29
or something like that. What's become
8:31
part of I know, But I do
8:34
want to shave it. I think I think it's time to start
8:36
shaving it for roles, okay, stuff and
8:39
and looking a little different for
8:41
some of these people. Yeah, you grow a good solid
8:43
one. I get like a couple of patches
8:46
here. Yeah there. So your father is I
8:49
know my dad? Yeah exactly. My dad
8:52
ironically has a great beard like gears and right,
8:54
and you can know well with my you know, the top of the you
8:56
know, the top of my head went right to my face. All
9:01
right, brot, I wanna put you on the spot. Quick questions, quick answers.
9:03
Okay, yeah, okay, go to karaoke song.
9:05
Go to karaoke song. Thunder Road
9:08
by Bruce Springsteen. Yeah.
9:10
Movie you've seen the most? Movie I've
9:12
seen the most. The Producers by mel
9:15
Brooks, the original, not the not
9:17
the musical one. Not that I'm hating on that. I
9:20
feel you. Celebrity crush growing
9:23
up. Celebrity crush going up, growing
9:25
up. Winona Wryter and Juliet
9:27
Lewis and I got to work with both of them. Isn't that
9:29
crazy? Really cool? Would you work with Juliet
9:31
on on the show called Camping that was on
9:34
HBO's right, Yes, yes,
9:36
yeah, that's cool. And when you know, Rene was great on that,
9:38
there must be a lot of fun. Oh my god, so great.
9:40
Yeah, it's amazing, it's crazy. Most
9:44
fun You've ever had on a set? Most
9:46
fun I've ever had on a set? Wow,
9:51
I I mean I I've
9:54
had a blast on everything. But where it was like just
9:56
like a full on laugh riot, crazy
9:59
fest was when I did two days
10:01
on this uh Adam McKay Will Ferrell
10:03
movie called The Other Guys, where we like
10:06
we spent like two days filming this like five
10:08
minute scene and we just like
10:10
improvised and like Adam and Will
10:13
gave me lines all day, you know,
10:15
uh, and just like just laughed
10:18
the whole day, like acting like totally insane.
10:20
So that was two of the funnest days
10:22
of my life. Yeah. But every show, though,
10:24
it's a blast. When you're working on things that you care about
10:27
and with like incredibly talented people,
10:29
it's just you know, you're
10:31
pinching yourself. Other than that, well,
10:33
Season three of Stranger Things is now on
10:35
Netflix and you can follow him on Instagram
10:37
at Brett Gellman. Thanks for stopping by, man,
10:40
Thank you man, thank you, Thanks
10:42
for having me. Of course, with Mario
