You're on with Mario Lopez. It's

0:03

Mario Lopez joining now in studio

0:05

from the Netflix show Selling Sunset.

0:08

Actress Chris Shell Hardley. How are you welcome

0:10

to the show. Thanks for having me. I'm good.

0:13

So, Okay, a couple of things I want

0:15

to talk about first, because I

0:17

I love real estate and I've

0:19

always been sort of fascinating. My mom actually

0:22

got me really into it at a young

0:24

age. She was like, Mi, whole um,

0:27

they're not making any more of it, so

0:29

you might as well try to get a little

0:31

something. And it's very conservative, right, it's

0:33

very sort of conservative investing. And

0:35

so I I really like these shows and

0:38

it's fascinating how they've been able to kind of

0:40

make so many and yet they're all still successful.

0:43

So for those not familiar, tell

0:45

me about this show, Selling Sunset. Okay.

0:47

So, Adam Devello is our creator and

0:50

the show if you check it out, it might seem a little familiar

0:52

because he created Laguna Beach in the Hills,

0:55

and so I would say it's kind of a mix of

0:57

that meets million dollar listing. So

1:00

you've got does

1:04

the drama come from

1:06

the purchases or the inquiries

1:09

or it's just sort of like a little like Vanderpump Rules,

1:11

Like there's the restaurant and then you get

1:13

to know the people and then their drama outside

1:15

of the deal. It's a little bit of that. And then it's

1:17

also you know, it's a competitive market

1:20

and we all work in the same office, so there's some

1:22

competition within agents

1:24

and clients. So there's that, but then there's also

1:26

some personal drama that comes in. I

1:29

it all gives me anxiety. I'd much rather like

1:31

deal with the real estate. But of course, you

1:33

know this stuff that really does happen.

1:35

It's very competitive in the office and it's

1:38

kind of cut throughout in the luxury real estate

1:40

market, so it kind of gives you

1:42

a look into you know, this

1:44

high end world. And I'm the newbie

1:46

joining the office. That's kind of the show follows

1:49

me joining this tight knit group. So

1:51

it is, um, there is some

1:53

drama that happens, just as it would but

1:56

it's definitely UM. I'm

1:58

not the vestal because it literally the draw my part

2:00

gives me. But

2:03

um, but it's hard. I mean is that we deal with

2:05

a lot of this, a lot of like competition

2:07

and stuff, so it's tough. I

2:10

was gonna say, is it like prison on the first day you just go

2:12

in and attack someone? Yeah?

2:14

You really the soap

2:16

and you you bring your ship? How

2:19

did how did it come about for you? So?

2:22

Actually, I when I I've

2:24

been doing soap operas for almost my

2:26

whole adult life, which um, I loved.

2:28

But sometimes you're not working and the phone doesn't ring,

2:31

you're between jobs, and so I

2:33

kind of, um was investing on my own

2:36

and so it's just kind of something that naturally I

2:38

was interested in, kind of like what you were saying.

2:41

But then so I was like, Okay, this is actually

2:43

something I can turn into a side career when I'm not

2:45

working on a soap Barbara, and so

2:48

it kind of started that way, and I just,

2:50

you know, slowly started helping like different friends

2:52

that needed to buy a house or whatever.

2:54

And then lo and behold, I got

2:56

approached to do the show, which was kind

2:59

of nice because it didn't conflict

3:01

they worked, they were happy to work around

3:03

my Days of Our Lives schedule, so it was

3:05

a little crazy but fun. Yeah, and

3:08

so now I I feel like I I do both,

3:10

which is nice. So you kind of got the best of both

3:12

the world. So smart too, because so many people just sort of

3:14

kind of sit around either wait for the phone

3:16

to ring or get stressed. Good for you to

3:19

have that sort of hustle mentality and to do

3:21

something that you like and then it ends up kind of

3:23

working out, uh, and you get to kind

3:25

of service both things ironically, right. I know,

3:27

it definitely didn't. I didn't start out with that

3:29

in mind, but it's kind of been a little Christmas

3:31

So it's it's good. Yeah, And uh,

3:34

what's this about your first name? It doesn't have to do with the

3:36

day you were born or what's going

3:38

on there. Okay, so um,

3:40

okay, So my mom, this is back when

3:42

the Shell stations had like a where you could

3:44

get your car serviced, and so she

3:47

was getting her car worked on and she actually

3:49

went into labor at the Shell station and

3:51

the guy that was helping her, he was holding her hand. He called

3:53

the ambulance. I wasn't born at a Shell station. But

3:56

he was just so lovely with her and calmed

3:58

her down. And his name was Chris. She wanted

4:00

to kind of name me something with Chris and it,

4:03

and so she literally just stuck the two together,

4:05

Chris and Shell. That's

4:07

awesome. That's the best story

4:09

I ever heard for her name right there. While Yeah,

4:12

that happens to be so flattered. I

4:14

guess I need to meet him. I actually haven't met

4:16

him as an adult. Wow. Good thing she wasn't

4:18

at like a union seventy six. That's

4:23

my dad likes to say. Id thing it wasn't a Texico.

4:25

You'd beat Chris Texica.

4:29

That's his Thanksgiving joke. Every day, much

4:32

better life. Um So, getting back

4:34

to the show for for a second. I've had

4:36

a couple of friends out of have binge watched and they

4:38

really like it and stuff. What's been the reaction from

4:40

most people? Actually, it's

4:43

so funny because we took you know, we filmed this over

4:45

the course of well over three months, and it's

4:47

just so funny to get the feedback. People are watching it

4:49

in one day and they're like, okay, one season two.

4:53

So that's good. I mean, the feedback has been incredible

4:55

and so supportive and nice. Um.

4:57

I feel like it's been encouraging,

5:00

and I feel like that's what Netflix wants. I think their

5:02

whole model is that they want you to bene it. So I

5:05

think it's doing really well. So that's exciting. People

5:07

are I'm a little surprised. I mean, they're

5:09

literally watching it one day, so it's been

5:11

great. Would you be interested in doing another

5:13

season? I would be, I. I

5:15

I would be. I definitely, you

5:17

know, like you said, I would rather

5:20

focus a little more on real estate side

5:22

of it. But um, you know, this drama

5:24

really does happen even when the cameras aren't there, so I

5:26

guess it really is part of it. So um

5:29

that part stresses me out, but you know what, I'm a team

5:31

player. I think it's uh. I would definitely

5:33

be on board for season two. Yeah. Yeah,

5:35

once you kind of get the hang out, you kind of navigate

5:37

and you can kind of see and they get

5:39

clever with that editing though, because

5:42

I do feel that's true. I feel like the first time I

5:44

didn't really know what I was doing because I'm so used to scripted

5:47

and I was like, wait, what is she doing? But now

5:49

I feel like I would have a little bit more of um

5:51

my sea legs under me. But um, just

5:54

like you said, you never know because with the editing, you're

5:57

still putting it out there and just hoping for the

5:59

best. Add that music and forget about you

6:02

did return the two days of our lives. After

6:05

taking some time off and stuff. What was it like going

6:07

back to the show. It's fun. I

6:09

have to say, Um, they kind

6:11

of brought me on totally different. The first time I was on,

6:13

my character was really sweet and nice and

6:15

and a little timid, and this time

6:18

she's full blown crazy. So I feel like, if you're

6:20

ever going to come back to a soap, this

6:22

is I mean, it's I'm injecting people

6:24

with barbiturates and I'm

6:27

kidnapping kidnapping babies. It's

6:29

it's a lot of fun. Awesome. That's

6:32

a fun character to bring some of that

6:34

on to the Selling Sunset, to

6:37

the Selling Sunset. Gonna take notes

6:39

from Jordan's Are they still

6:41

shooting that right here in Burbank at

6:43

the yea? Yeah,

6:45

I interviewed. I remember there was a couple

6:48

forget their names, that they were like nineties

6:51

something, ninety. They're like ninety.

6:53

They've been on the show for like sixty years

6:57

exactly, and they live right here in to Luca Lake. It

6:59

was such an idea, you know what I'm talking about? Do I

7:02

do? They're so lovely?

7:04

They are, Yeah, they are. It's so funny.

7:06

Do that a lot with you know, there's certain matriarchs

7:09

and stuff where like Susan Lucci

7:11

was like that did your Hall. You know

7:13

you've got um Victor Newman

7:16

with Eric Braden, So I feel like they

7:18

it's kind of cool. I feel like that is what makes

7:20

people, makes people latch

7:22

onto them and feel like it's like home because they watch

7:24

it with their grandma and maybe their grandma isn't

7:26

here anymore, so it's nice. It becomes generational.

7:29

Yeah, Um, and your husband,

7:31

Justin Harley, very nice guy. I

7:34

got to do a fun little scene with him on

7:36

the on the show I Know You're this is

7:38

a star boy.

7:40

His character in particular has reference

7:43

to me like three times. I know. Do

7:45

you know? Do you get that? Because that's one of my wife

7:48

and I we have are She has her shows

7:50

that she watches her Housewives and whatever by

7:52

herself, and then I have my show I watched, like

7:54

my Narcos and you know, and then

7:56

we have our couples watch shows. Those

7:58

are important. I'm not allowed to DVR cheat on

8:00

her with the couples watch you can't do that. So

8:02

this is us is at the top of our list and our couples

8:04

watch shows, so we're only I think

8:06

we're only like an episode behind right

8:09

now, so we didn't see the finale,

8:11

and so obviously I gotta wait. So I think we're trying.

8:13

We're trying to get to that tonight. But anyway, and

8:15

watching the show, and I think, as a matter of fact, the very

8:17

first episode, I gotta shout out and

8:20

he's referenced me like a couple of times that it's

8:22

so funny. And then finally I got to

8:24

be on the show. But then I ended up on the phone. That

8:27

was a kind of a weird kind of

8:30

this was such a big deal. They were so excited

8:32

he was going to be on This is Us. And then when it came out,

8:34

he's like, now

8:37

see that editing. It

8:40

was the editing that was a total shady move,

8:42

right, But no, I uh it was it was.

8:44

It was really cool and it was a lot of fun. He's he's a super

8:47

super nice guy. So the finale happened,

8:49

Uh last week? Did you does he

8:52

fill you in? Does he get to know what

8:54

happens throughout the season or they get

8:56

the scripts just one week at a time? Right, Well,

8:58

normally the creator will include them in so they

9:00

know where the story is going, right, But I

9:03

you know, I really try and stay spoiler free. The scripts

9:06

will literally be laying on our kitchen

9:08

counter. Yeah,

9:10

even last night, Like you know, obviously

9:13

in l A, we get to watch the show a few hours

9:15

after everybody else is on Twitter tweeting about

9:17

it from New York. So I I even

9:19

like go dark on the internet. I'm like, I

9:21

do not want it to be spoiled. If I went this long

9:24

with those scripts sitting around, I don't want it to be

9:26

spoiled the last few hours on Twitter.

9:28

So I really every

9:30

once in a while run scenes with him, but only if,

9:33

um, it's something that doesn't spoil a huge story.

9:35

He'll be like, because sometimes we'll go to run a scene

9:37

for lines and he'll be like, you know what, never mind,

9:39

it'll give too much away. Yeah,

9:42

yeah, I know. He's really good and he has to play buzz

9:45

drunk a lot, which is difficult, and it does a

9:47

really good job. And the last

9:49

one we saw we might be too behind

9:51

because the last one we saw is when he was he

9:54

was acting like it was drinking water was actually vodka in the hospital

9:57

And what are the pressing episode? By the way, you

9:59

don't know what's good the baby and the whole. I'm

10:01

like, oh my god. But it

10:03

is very interesting how they go back and forth. And

10:06

he's got a cool younger version of himself too, the

10:09

younger versions of itself, the real

10:11

younger one or in the middle ones kind of brady rightly,

10:15

but the other one. Yeah, but no, the show

10:19

is definitely on our DVR as far

10:21

as the couple's watch right there. I feel like you guys

10:23

are like the finale. I feel like, you know, it definitely

10:25

has happier. That was a

10:27

heavy episode, but just stick it out,

10:29

stick it out. But I like Kevin. I

10:31

don't have to have everything, so you know,

10:33

happy all the time, So I like it, which is cool. All

10:36

right. I want to put you on the spot right here. Quick questions, quick

10:38

answers. Okay, okay, go to karaoke

10:40

song? Oh um, you know a classic

10:42

you ought to know? Lantis MORI set Okay,

10:45

it's aggressive. Yeah, I didn't get that answer

10:47

to figure last movie you saw

10:50

in theaters? Um

10:52

it was, Oh isn't it romantic? I took

10:54

Bella. She's fourteen, so that's right down her

10:56

alley. That's the one. Which

10:59

one is that with um Rebel

11:01

Wilson? Right? Yes, yes, because

11:03

I was like vaguely familiar with it. Yes, yes, celebrity

11:07

crush growing up. Um,

11:09

Jonathan Taylor Thomas J

11:13

T. T. We've had j A. T. T. It's a certain

11:15

era shout outs. Where

11:17

are you from? Originally Kentucky, Kentucky?

11:19

Well, part western Kentucky. It's really

11:22

small. It's called draft Inville. Okay,

11:24

Ville, Okay, where's your

11:26

accent? Well? If this you

11:29

know what, if this was vodka moments,

11:31

I would start talking like that. There's certain or there's

11:34

certain words that you say that it comes out all

11:36

I have to. I have to underline them in scripts, like brother.

11:39

I try. It's really hard for me not to I

11:41

say brother instead of like I have to

11:43

lift my mouth almost my whole head

11:45

when I say brother. Otherwise

11:48

I want to go brother. Yeah yeah, How

11:50

far are you from? Louisville? Three hours?

11:53

Okay? Yeah? Yeah, I was supposed

11:55

to go to the Derby. Uh this year so

11:58

much fun? I know, I you know, I been a couple

12:00

of years in both times it rained. Oh I was

12:02

once rain too, which is kind

12:04

of yeah, but it's is someone and those men julips are good.

12:07

Um. Plus you already had the hat picked out. I

12:09

had the whole common looking

12:12

like a boss man. Okay,

12:14

I'm gona have to say it for next year. Uh nickname

12:16

growing up? Mm hm, Smiley,

12:20

it was just our Twinkie. I I

12:22

can't remember, but I don't even remember the way

12:24

that came about. I think, well, Smiley's

12:27

a little bit. I don't remember how Twinkie came

12:29

about. And then my uncle had They're

12:31

all bad. I don't know. I don't

12:33

even what. I don't want when

12:37

you got such a great history of your real name,

12:39

you know what I mean? Right there? Time travel

12:41

destination? Sorry what time

12:43

travel destination? Um,

12:46

let's see. How about the eighties? Just

12:49

fun? Just go back to the yeah,

12:51

why not any particular uh

12:54

point in the eighties. Um,

12:57

let's see, it was a big like

12:59

that's when new kids on the block came out, and

13:01

I was like teasing my hair, trying to be cool.

13:04

But I was little, um

13:06

not specific, I mean stayed by the bell.

13:08

But that's that's more nineties. That's more nineties,

13:10

that's right, yeah,

13:15

style right, right, that's not always kind

13:18

of like the fashion was like

13:20

transitioning from nineties.

13:24

Yeah, exactly. Um, the coolest

13:26

person you sold the house too. It was the nicest

13:28

person dis Justin Harley

13:30

count Really

13:34

yeah, of course he's got a great agent. Very

13:37

cool, very cool. Well.

13:39
