0:11
a fan of stories with lots of twists and turns,
0:14
I can sometimes be a skeptic when something
0:16
sounds too good to be true. But
0:18
as it turns out, some things just really
0:20
are that good. Like cash back at
0:22
thousands of your favorite stories with Rakuten.
0:25
I definitely spend a little more during this time
0:27
of year. And with Rakuten, you can save on
0:29
whatever you're buying for the holidays. So
0:31
while you're getting gifts for family and friends,
0:33
get something for yourself too in the form of cash
0:36
back. Rakuten makes it so easy
0:38
to save since they partner with stores you already

know and love, like American Eagle, Carhart,
0:43
fenty and Ray ban. These stores
0:45
actually pay Rakuten for sending shoppers
0:47
their way, and then Rakuten shares that money
0:49
with you as cash back. You can also
0:51
stack coupons and deals on top of cash
0:53
back to get even more savings. You

So we know you like listening to a good story,
1:23

1:30
twenties, you can do just that.
1:32
Every family has secrets and June's
1:34
family certainly has a lot.
1:37
Amer yourself in a who done it story when
1:39
you play as the amateur detective on a quest
1:41
to solve the murder of her sister. There
1:43
are tons of mysteries to solve and great
1:45
ways to decorate your island when you do.
1:48
I found this is a game that'll get me locked in
1:50
and focused on a task, which is nice because
1:52
it's not something I'm mindlessly turning
1:54
to, and I have a real sense of accomplishment
1:56
when I complete a
1:57
chapter. Find your inner detective

2:18
Hi, Club Club. It's me again, Marco
2:21
Palmieri producer of Rome's Black
2:23
The Next Chapter. Thank you so much
2:25
for listening, and I hope you enjoyed season
2:27
two of the Sustra Saga as much
2:29
as I did. Now that the season is
2:31
over, we wanted to share with you some special
2:34
boat episodes featuring conversations with
2:36
the creative team behind the next chapter.
2:38
In today's episode, I'd give some
2:41
into the making of the show as a producer and
2:43
spend a of time just talking about
2:45
my love of orphan black, I'm
2:47
sure you can relate. We're
2:50
always excited to hear from you. So if you
2:52
haven't already, please connect with us
2:54
on Twitter at realmmedia or
2:56
reach out through our website realm.
2:59
And if you want a bonus bonus, Stick
3:01
around to the end of this episode for a sneak
3:04
peek at another show we think you'll
3:06
like. But for now, tune
3:08
into this replay of a recent Instagram
3:10
live with me.
3:16
Oh, hey, Marco.
3:17
Hey. How's it going? Can you hear me?
3:20
Yes. It's great. Awesome. Awesome.
3:23
I I was just telling everybody about
3:25
orphan black the next chapter in case they don't
3:27
know about it. So can
3:29
you kind of give a explanation
3:32
about the show and where people can find it.
3:34
Sure. So orphan black
3:36
first and foremost, or from Black the next chapter,
3:39
first and foremost, is a fiction podcast.
3:42
And you can it's available anywhere
3:44
you get your podcasts, whether it's Apple
3:46
or Spotify, or or any other
3:49
distribution channel like that. It's
3:52
also available on our platform
3:54
with realm dot f m. And
3:57
more importantly though, it's
3:59
in addition to being a fiction podcast,
4:02
it's the official continuation
4:04
of the orphan black TV series. And
4:06
I
4:06
can't understate that, you know,
4:08
in in any way. I can't can't
4:10
overstate that. It's
4:14
hugely gratifying
4:17
that we get the
4:19
approval and support
4:22
of the folks behind the orphan
4:24
black TV show. And that we got
4:26
the original cast to join
4:28
us in producing these. It's
4:30
not healthy stories.
4:32
Yeah. So can you kind of tell us, like, your
4:34
origin story? Like, where did you come into the
4:36
project? And
4:38
Like, when did you start working on it?
4:41
And, like, what was the process like at that point?
4:43
Right. So I came
4:45
in right about in the middle of the
4:47
development of season one. Another
4:50
producer had started out the project, but
4:52
they left the company and
4:54
I was the new guy, so I
4:56
was asked to step in and and take over. And
4:58
I was like, I get to work
5:00
on orphan black. That's freaking amazing.
5:02
So so so yeah,
5:04
the the the story of the
5:06
first season was already,
5:08
you know, broken down and
5:10
and know, we had we
5:12
had drafted it in. And I came
5:14
in basically to help
5:16
incorporate the studio
5:19
notes that were coming in to,
5:22
you know, work through any remaining wrinkles
5:24
and storyline, tighten
5:26
up some spots. You know, basically, I've been I
5:29
I tried my best to support the
5:31
writers in a project where I was,
5:33
like, you know, coming in, in the middle. But
5:35
we were they were the writers
5:37
were fantastic to work with. We had a
5:39
wonderful time. And, you know, we
5:41
were, you know, super jazzed
5:44
when when we finally got the word
5:47
that Tatiana Masladi
5:49
was going to be narrating the project.
5:51
And that just like set a
5:53
new fire under everyone. And, you
5:56
know, we we
5:57
excitedly, you know, saw
6:00
saw the project through the finish line.
6:03
Yeah. That was one of my questions was
6:06
if you were, like, a fan of Working
6:08
Black before you started
6:09
working with the project. Oh my god. I
6:11
was there I was
6:13
there in front of my TV on March
6:15
thirtieth twenty thirteen to
6:17
watch the premiere of the first episode
6:20
and I stuck with it right to the end. And
6:22
I I went to work. I
6:24
was working at tour books at the time, and I
6:26
was telling my colleagues there. You guys
6:28
gotta watch the show. You're not gonna
6:30
believe how cool it is. And
6:33
when I mean, some of them took longer than
6:35
others to give it a try, but and
6:37
without exception, every time someone
6:40
did, they'd come back to me and say, oh my god. You
6:42
were right. This is this is probably probably
6:44
cool. So yeah. So
6:46
so big fan of the TV
6:48
series and, you know, that
6:50
stayed with me through working
6:52
on the podcast.
6:55
So
6:55
do you feel like that really impacted your
6:57
work on the show, like being a fan already?
7:00
Oh, yeah. Oh, absolutely. I
7:02
mean, you know, III
7:04
was invested in the story of these
7:06
characters, you know. And and and I
7:08
gotta say the writers are too. I mean,
7:10
all the writers were fans of the
7:12
of the TV series. And all of them
7:15
were invested in these characters and their
7:17
stories. And we all, you
7:19
know, worked very hard to try to
7:21
you know, bring
7:23
bring that enthusiasm into the
7:25
project and do right by it,
7:27
you know. Because it was it was something very
7:29
important to us personally. And so, you
7:31
know, we were we were excited to be able
7:33
to, you know, apply that enthusiasm
7:35
professionally. Yeah.
7:38
For anyone joining, we're talking about or
7:40
from Black, the next chapter of the podcast.
7:43
And you can find out wherever you get your podcast, so
7:45
you can just search and you'll find
7:47
it. My next
7:49
question that I have for you was, what are
7:51
kind of like the processes behind the
7:53
behind the scenes that maybe people don't know
7:55
go
7:55
into, like, making that show like this.
7:58
Right. So so we we
8:00
approached this particular series in
8:02
much the same way you
8:04
approach production of of a TV
8:06
show. We, you know, we start out with a concept
8:09
that gets, you know, that that that
8:11
that you
8:13
know, get that that we end up
8:15
hiring a writer's room
8:18
to to develop further
8:22
you know, AAA writer's room basically
8:25
means we've got, like, five or six writers
8:27
all working together collaboratively to
8:30
put the story together and and flesh it out
8:32
and and, you
8:34
know, make sure everything fits together
8:36
properly. We took notes from studio
8:39
execs because this is their property
8:41
and, you know, they get to bet every
8:43
word that we put out there. And,
8:46
you know, it was a
8:48
matter of drafting, redrafting,
8:51
pruning you
8:53
know, pumping up. We
8:55
did we did everything we needed to do
8:58
over over several months.
9:00
I think Yeah. Over a
9:02
number of months to make sure the
9:04
project was as good as it could be. And then, you
9:06
know, beyond that, once the
9:08
once the script is finalized, we
9:11
send it off to to
9:13
production for,
9:15
you know, copy editing and and
9:17
proofreading and then off
9:19
to audio. For audio production.
9:21
You know, we got the casting, which
9:23
we got that we that we the dream
9:26
casting we wanted And
9:29
yeah. And then, you know, the project at that point,
9:31
you know, kind of steps out of the
9:33
hands of the writer's writer or
9:35
the producer and and goes
9:37
into the domain of
9:39
of the audio department. Although, I
9:41
I remained involved you know,
9:44
to help make sure everything,
9:47
you know, stay on track and
9:49
move forward. Yeah. That was
9:51
what I that was my next question. What does it
9:53
mean to be a producer on a
9:55
podcast? It's basically hurting
9:57
cats. I mean, you know, in a nutshell,
9:59
but I more
10:01
more specifically, I mean, you've
10:03
got you've got you've got to
10:06
you're there from the very
10:08
beginning to the very end, making
10:11
sure that, you know,
10:14
everything that needs to be done, gets done,
10:18
that, you know, the the writers
10:20
are all, you
10:22
know, on the same
10:24
page that
10:27
the, you know, the
10:29
schedules maintained. Everything the you know, the trains
10:31
are running on time. You gotta make sure the trains are
10:33
running on time and one of these projects.
10:36
And and, yeah,
10:38
being the producer is just, you
10:41
know, staying on top of it
10:43
all as best you can, you know. And in
10:45
the case of something like this, of course,
10:47
you've got the adding pressure of, you
10:49
know, it's not just the
10:51
writers and me and Realm that
10:53
needs to, you know,
10:55
be happy with the project. We also have to
10:57
make the owners of orphan black happy
11:00
and the fans, you know, the the
11:02
fans are are awesome
11:04
and they'll tell you when
11:06
something isn't right. You know, and we're
11:08
we're very sensitive to that.
11:10
I wanna add though that even,
11:12
you know, talking about my
11:14
job as a producer, I'd be nowhere
11:17
without my colleagues at Realm. I
11:19
mean, they are the most awesome team
11:21
imaginable, and they are so supportive
11:23
and so ready to pitch in and
11:26
they all know their jobs. They they you know,
11:28
from the content team to the
11:30
audio department to the production
11:32
department, the audience development
11:35
team, the the executive team,
11:37
they're all fantastic colleagues
11:39
and and, you know, they're they're
11:41
as much a reason as anyone
11:44
for for this show making it
11:46
to to to
11:48
to where it is
11:49
now. Yeah. Yeah. And it
11:51
changed a lot. Like, for anyone who hasn't
11:53
listened, the first season was completely
11:55
narrated by Tatiana and she
11:58
did everything. She did the coronavices. She narrated. She
12:00
did all the other voices. But
12:02
for season two, Evelyn
12:05
Christian and Jordan all joined. Can you talk a
12:07
little bit about, like, how that all came to
12:09
be? Because it's pretty cool.
12:10
So so you
12:14
know, anyone and
12:16
it doesn't matter if you've listened to,
12:18
you know, the first season or not.
12:20
What's important to know is that
12:22
Tatiana did everything in
12:24
season one. She she and this was,
12:26
you know, written as long form
12:28
prose. It wasn't written as an
12:30
audio drama script. That's
12:33
what we ended up doing in season two.
12:35
But in the long form prose version
12:37
of of season one, she did
12:39
everything. She read it from start to finish,
12:41
she did all the characters whether they were
12:43
clones or not, you know.
12:45
And and it was a lot of work.
12:47
And it was you know, an
12:50
incredible lift for her, but she
12:52
did it like like like a
12:54
trooper. She was absolutely
12:56
amazing. But I
12:59
think there were two factors that played
13:01
into the changes we made in season two. One
13:03
is we well, three factors. One
13:05
is we decided to to move into audio
13:07
drama. Right? Serial
13:09
box became realm and
13:11
we we started to to
13:15
redefine our approach to this sort of material.
13:17
So we knew we wanted to do it as an audio
13:19
drama. And
13:22
we knew we wanted to make it a little easier
13:24
on Tatiana this time. So
13:27
we we decided that it would be
13:29
fun to just take take things up a
13:31
notch with season two.
13:33
We going to do it as an audio drama
13:35
to bring in cast members from
13:37
the show to join to Tien tsin
13:39
in repricing their roles. And that included
13:42
at first, just Jordan
13:44
and Evelyn. And then
13:47
we we kind of snuck
13:49
in Christian
13:51
toward the end to
13:54
really to really amp things up,
13:56
and they've just been absolutely
13:58
fantastic working together again. They
14:00
work separately but together. You know, they're
14:02
all they're all working from the same
14:04
script, but they're all recording the
14:06
stories in different places. So
14:08
it's it's fun that that they actually
14:11
they don't get to play off each other, which
14:13
is kind of interesting. They're used to playing off
14:15
each other, but this is a situation
14:17
where they have to pretend to play off each
14:19
other and we have to fit their their
14:21
their recordings together. And and
14:23
that's that's been an awesome
14:25
thing to to watch unfold, I have
14:27
to
14:27
say. Just reminding
14:30
everybody who's joining and wondering what's
14:32
going on. We're talking about orphan black, the
14:34
next chapter podcast. There's two
14:37
seasons available. Episode three of
14:39
season two is out today, and
14:41
it's free wherever you get your podcast so you
14:43
can go. Go listen.
14:45
And if you're if you haven't heard of it at
14:47
all, and this is your first time you
14:48
have, like, quite a lot in store for you so you
14:50
can binge. Yeah. So
14:51
at least turn it
14:52
back in it's really a lot of fun. If you're a
14:54
fan of the show, I think you're gonna be a fan of
14:56
the podcast. You
14:59
mentioned the fans earlier
15:01
and it's like how obviously,
15:03
we want the fans to be
15:04
happy. Did you feel like, do you feel the
15:06
pressure of the fans? Like, how how
15:08
does that, like, impact when you're
15:10
making the show? Okay. Well, I
15:12
mean, I'm okay. A full
15:14
disclosure. This is not my first rodeo
15:16
with respect to, like, you know,
15:19
working on properties that have
15:21
been produced on TV or
15:23
movies and and turned them into something else. I
15:25
used to work on Star Trek novels. I've
15:28
done video games you know,
15:30
resident evil and world of warcraft. And,
15:32
you know, one of the things you get
15:35
that gets drilled into you in
15:38
in in working on the
15:41
third party IP, that's what we call
15:43
it, or media tie ins.
15:46
Is that you you have
15:48
you definitely have to be mindful
15:51
of, you know, who the audience
15:53
is and what they like about
15:56
the original property. And then you have to do
15:58
your best to try to bring that
16:00
to the work that you're doing. It's
16:03
It's nothing faint of heart, because,
16:06
like I said earlier, you know, the fans are not
16:08
hesitant about pointing out when you screw
16:10
up. You know? But but
16:12
we but in the case in the particular case
16:14
of Worth and Black, you know,
16:16
the the the share amount of
16:18
support that we got from all quarters,
16:20
whether it was, you know, the
16:22
the the studio or or
16:24
the cast itself, it
16:27
it was absolutely fantastic. The
16:29
the you know, when the actors have notes
16:32
about, you know, whether or not their character
16:34
would actually say a certain line, we
16:36
were like, yeah, okay. I mean, you know
16:38
better than we do, and we'll we'll
16:40
we'll we'll take that note. So
16:43
so it was a truly
16:45
collaborative process. And and,
16:48
yeah, you know, I think I
16:50
think the fans
16:52
will will come to understand that that
16:54
we really did this
16:56
with love and not and
16:57
not, you know, not
17:00
not just as a job. Yeah.
17:03
Someone actually, one of the fans just ask,
17:05
what are some challenges of
17:07
doing a podcast that fans
17:09
might not understand
17:11
or
17:11
recognize? Yeah. Well,
17:14
that that that's true about any
17:16
third party IT project that you work
17:18
on. I mean, obviously, you hope for
17:21
the widest audience possible when you do
17:23
something like this, but you also recognize
17:25
that the main audience is gonna be people
17:27
who are familiar with the
17:29
TV show. What I think
17:32
works in our case is that even
17:34
if you didn't watch the TV
17:36
show, I think if you came into
17:39
season one of the next chapter and and
17:41
started. And, you know, that was your first
17:44
exposure to orphan black. You know,
17:46
it wouldn't it wouldn't take you
17:48
long to figure out what
17:50
the situation was and and
17:52
and where it came from. We we do we
17:54
do a fair amount of referencing to things that
17:56
happened on the TV show to kind of
17:58
ground people in the world that they're
18:00
in. So So, yeah, I
18:02
think I think a non fan could
18:04
actually get a lot
18:06
of interesting pleasure out of out of our podcast.
18:09
So we
18:13

19:59
Are
20:01
there are there things you can kinda tease
20:03
about? Like, maybe for people who haven't even
20:05
listened to season one. Right.
20:09
Like, what would what,
20:09
like, what can you tell them that might entice
20:12
them to be like? Yeah. Well, it's
20:14
it's it the the podcast is set
20:16
eight years after the end of the
20:18
TV series. everybody's a little
20:20
older. And
20:22
and their lives have changed a bit.
20:24
You know, some of them Some
20:26
of their lives have changed more than others. And
20:29
that was a really interesting thing
20:31
to explore. We
20:35
one of things that I'll
20:38
I'll talk about in
20:40
connection with that is that, you know, we got
20:42
only a couple of glimpses of
20:44
Rachel in season one,
20:46
but what we saw was very
20:50
enticing and very telling. I
20:52
mean, Rachel, had gone through
20:54
probably some of the some of the hardest
20:56
changes to her character since
21:00
the end of the
21:02
TV series. But she also remained
21:04
racial throughout it. And
21:06
when we catch up to her, you
21:08
know, we kinda see
21:11
you know, a hint of of
21:13
of that journey that that she's
21:15
she's been on. And in
21:18
in season two, we
21:20
actually, like, explore that way further. She's she
21:23
has a much bigger role in
21:26
in in season two. And
21:28
there were some scenes coming up that I just
21:30
can't wait for people to
21:33
listen to because they're
21:35
they're they're just they're just amazing
21:37
in the way that they, you
21:41
know, show the evolution of her character and a
21:43
lot of the other characters.
21:46
Yeah. We had so for anyone
21:48
who might have missed it, we did, like, a reunion
21:50
panel with the cast a
21:53
few weeks ago. And you can find
21:55
it on YouTube. And one of
21:57
the questions that they asked the
21:59
cast was, like, were you surprised by any
22:01
places, like, where your characters went?
22:04
gonna ask you the same thing where you since
22:06
you were a
22:06
fan, were you kind of like, was there any
22:09
surprises when you were working on season one?
22:11
You're like, oh, this is or
22:13
or maybe like Just the fact just the fact
22:15
that that it was being set
22:17
eight years later. You know,
22:19
that that has huge implications
22:21
for for a couple of characters like
22:24
Kiera and Charlotte, who in the TV
22:26
series were children.
22:28
And in our
22:32
podcast, they are, you know, older
22:34
teenagers now. So
22:36
so them, you know, writing those
22:38
characters as adults
22:40
and figuring out, you know, where
22:42
they were in their lives was
22:46
was really a revelation to
22:48
me, particularly given the role that
22:50
they play in you know,
22:52
I mean, I mean, season
22:54
one I don't know. Should I
22:56
spoil this guy? I may as well.
22:58
You're season one. There's a big game
23:01
changer, which is that the
23:03
clones are exposed to the world.
23:05
Everybody knows that they exist. And
23:07
it happens about halfway through the season.
23:11
And there's lots of other stuff going down. So
23:13
there isn't a lot of time to explore
23:15
the fallout of that. That's what Season
23:17
two is about. But
23:19
what is interesting about the
23:21
the close become, you being
23:23
revealed and being exposed to the world is
23:25
that it it was Kira and
23:28
Rachel who chose
23:30
to make that happen without, you know,
23:32
getting the consent of
23:34
the Sestras or any
23:36
other clones who ended up being exposed
23:38
to the process. And,
23:41
yeah, it it was AAAA
23:44
huge involuntary outing of
23:46
nearly three hundred women and
23:49
and
23:50
Season two is
23:53
really digging deep
23:55
into that. So,
23:57
I guess, this is, like, also a slight spoiler, but
23:59
someone asked a question about Cassima
24:02
and Delphine being parents. This is
24:04
Susan too. And Are
24:06
we gonna see, like, any more insight
24:09
into them as parents?
24:10
Oh, yes. Oh, yes.
24:12
There there's really there's
24:15
there's Couple of really beautiful scenes
24:17
coming up about that. I
24:19
don't want to spoil it too much.
24:22
They do go let
24:24
me we're we're up to episode three
24:25
now. Mhmm. Yeah. Episode
24:26
three now. Okay. What I'm
24:28
trying to remember when it it's it's
24:30
an episode five that
24:32
they go to a childbirth
24:35
class. And we get to
24:37
see what that's like for them,
24:40
especially given what is
24:42
going on in the world with respect to
24:43
clothes. Howard
24:44
Bauchner: So someone asks where
24:47
you can listen to the podcast and
24:49
you can get it anywhere that you
24:51
can find podcasts. You can do, Apple's, Spotify,
24:54
any of your podcatcher kind of apps
24:56
that you use should work on
24:58
YouTube. So anywhere on
25:00
there, you just search orphan black in the next
25:02
chapter, you should find it pretty
25:04
easily. So okay.
25:07
Another I think this is my last question for you,
25:09
and then we'll take we'll take more, like,
25:11
audio question, so people are sending things.
25:14
But what other like,
25:16
what other podcasts you working on
25:18
-- Oh, wow. -- that that that CLONE Club might
25:21
be
25:21
like, sure. I won't listen to this.
25:24
Well, you know, Earlier
25:26
this year, I did another
25:29
MediaTiny project called Batman the
25:31
Blind Cut, which is
25:33
about the Batman Catheter. And he
25:35
in a he teams up with
25:38
the one of the
25:40
magical characters in the DC universe,
25:42
Thomas. And, you know, zatana and Batman in the
25:44
story are on equal footing. And in
25:46
some ways, I think, you know, because it's a
25:48
magical problem that they're facing. Zatana really
25:51
has the edge John. I'm back, ma'am.
25:53
But it's an awesome story by
25:55
Catherine and Valenti, Martin
25:57
Cahill and Kay
25:59
Arsenal Rivera. And, yeah,
26:01
that's that's available only on realms
26:03
platform. So please
26:05
subscribe to that if if you're
26:07
interested in that story. But
26:09
in terms of other podcasts, we've
26:12
also I also started
26:15
recently hosting Tales Beyond
26:17
Time, which is an anthology show
26:20
that features, you
26:22
know, short fiction that
26:25
realm picked up over the course of
26:27
twenty nineteen and twenty twenty. And
26:29
now we've, you know, we've
26:31
got about a hundred thirty stories
26:33
approximately that we're
26:35
we're going to be releasing a
26:37
podcast form. And the show,
26:39
again, is called Tails Beyond Time, and I'm the host.
26:41
I'm basically, you know, the rock
26:43
cirling of of our particular, Twadlitza.
26:46
Yeah.
26:46
And I think, you know, people who, like, work
26:49
from black, like, sci fi and,
26:51
like, sci fi things that make you
26:52
think, and a lot of these stories are, like,
26:54
those
26:54
kinds of stories. Yeah. Literally, like, in
26:57
all five degrees.
26:58
I I definitely think I definitely
27:00
think that the orphan
27:02
black audience will get a lot
27:05
out of the stories that I
27:07
was able to curate for tales beyond
27:09
time. They're they're
27:11
they're really thought provoking their they're
27:15
diverse. They they ask a lot of
27:17
uncomfortable questions. A lot of the
27:19
times, they don't always answer
27:21
them. But, you know, that's how you start conversations.
27:23
It's just by asking questions and and
27:25
that's important. And the writers we've
27:27
got are just amazing. We've
27:29
got, you know, writers like
27:31
Max Gladstone excuse me Max
27:34
Gladstone, PJL Clark,
27:36
Katholenti, Kate
27:39
Elliott, Isabel GAAP
27:42
ten nanometer review.
27:44
I mean, I can go on and on -- Yeah.
27:46
-- a lot of really
27:49
amazing talented writers. Ken
27:51
Lu, we got George
27:53
DeKay, narrated a couple of Ken Lu
27:55
story stories for us. They were in
27:57
episode two. Yeah. This horror, science
27:59
fiction, and fantasy. It's a it's
28:01
it's a fun show to work on and, yeah, I
28:03
hope people will try it. Because
28:05
there's a lot of really awesome material in
28:07
it. Someone said
28:09
thank you for the podcast. So thank you for
28:12
the
28:12
podcast, Marcon. You're welcome.
28:14
For anyone who just anyone who just joined,
28:16
we're talking about Orkin Black The Next Chapter,
28:18
the official continuation podcast
28:20
of the show. There's two seasons out now.
28:22
So if you haven't, listen
28:24
to the first season, which Tatiana and Eric did the whole thing and you're
28:26
just like, I wanna listen to Tatiana, talk
28:29
to me that
28:31
you can binge the whole saying
28:33
hours of touching on his voice in your
28:35
ear. And then for season two,
28:37
Christian and Evelyn and Jordan
28:39
also joined. And it's like it's super fun
28:41
to see them Like, we have
28:43
some behind the scenes videos that that
28:45
are gonna come out and it's
28:47
pretty cool to see them back doing
28:49
their
28:49
characters. Yeah. It really is.
28:51
I mean, I gotta tell you, I you know, part
28:53
of my job is to
28:56
listen to, you know, the first draft
28:58
audio cuts. That we make of the episodes,
29:00
with the, you know, sound effects of the
29:02
music ad again, all the audio splice
29:04
together, and the rush
29:06
that I get from
29:08
seeing this story performed
29:10
by the orphaned black cast.
29:12
It never died. Every
29:15
new episode I get to listen
29:17
to, I get such a rush
29:20
hearing hearing these guys
29:22
working together
29:23
again. It's really wild,
29:24
especially knowing I had
29:25
a hand in it.
29:27
Yeah. I mean, that's pretty cool,
29:29
especially since you're a fan
29:31
of the show. Totally. This
29:33
this could
29:34
be, like, a controversial question. But do you have,
29:36
like, a favorite clown or a character that you're
29:39
Wow. But you know
29:41
I mean, there are no brands. That that's
29:44
that's the worst question to ask nor from
29:46
black fan, which is If you don't have I
29:48
know. Everybody maybe it doesn't have to be
29:51
a be a noncomb. Wow.
29:53
They're all so awesome. I mean,
29:55
you know, I mean, they're
29:58
they're just What about what about the new clones?
30:00
There's a few new
30:02
clones. We do have new clones. Right?
30:04
I mean, often black made a
30:06
tradition of introducing new
30:08
clones, you know, us aside from the
30:10
main ones in clone club
30:12
every season. So so
30:14
we we figured it was important for
30:16
us to do the same. So in season
30:18
one, we introduced Vivi
30:21
Baldez, who's an American loan
30:23
from a younger generation that was grown in the
30:25
United States.
30:29
And she you
30:32
know, the CIA agent who
30:34
is in Toronto on
30:36
an assignment before she
30:39
finds out what she is And,
30:42
you know, season one explores a
30:44
lot of, you know, her journey
30:46
in finding who she is and
30:48
and and meeting you know, clone
30:51
club and and realizing she
30:53
doesn't really like them and
30:55
doesn't really, you know, appreciate
30:57
the fact that that, you
30:59
know, they they do things
31:01
the way they do. You know, because she's looking
31:03
at at the situation from a completely
31:05
different perspective and has her own priorities
31:08
and you know, she's not she's
31:10
in season one, she's not really a
31:12
team player. And and
31:14
and basically, you know, does her own
31:16
thing. In season two,
31:19
we get to introduce a,
31:24
you know, AAAA
31:26
wellness guru who's a clone
31:28
named life Winston. And
31:31
she's this
31:34
isn't spoiling things, I think, to
31:36
say that she's she's our primary antagonist
31:38
in season two. Although, you know,
31:40
it may not be super obvious, you
31:43
know, in, you
31:46
know, at episode three where we are
31:48
right now. But it's also not much of a spoiler to
31:50
say. She's the
31:52
primary antagonist. And revealing
31:56
more and more about her as
31:59
the series as the season
32:01
unfolds is really cool.
32:03
She's got an interesting story. think
32:05
fans are gonna enjoy learning what
32:07
that story is. One other
32:09
interesting tidbit about the
32:11
clones in season two.
32:14
There are there are
32:17
about twenty between
32:19
twenty two and twenty five
32:22
different clones with
32:24
speaking roles in the season,
32:26
and Tatiana does them all. And,
32:28
you know, unsurprisingly,
32:30
of course. But She she she
32:33
manages to differentiate all
32:35
of them with with different
32:37
accents and different different
32:40
timbers and and affectations. It's
32:43
it's it's some miracle to
32:45
to to
32:46
hear. I was about to say it's a miracle to
32:48
watch, but of course. Do that.
32:50
So did you get do you do the writers give
32:52
her any kind of, like, guidance as to,
32:54
like, what the clone might sound
32:56
like? I can't remember. I I feel
32:58
like I mean, you know, this question We
33:00
we had some discussions in the writer's
33:02
room about, you know, what what what
33:05
the clone's personality what the new clone's
33:07
personalities were like and and what
33:09
their attitudes were, you
33:11
know, what their what their accents might
33:13
be. And and we,
33:15
you know, communicated those when
33:17
we transmitted the
33:19
the script for audio.
33:23
But even even so, you know, that there there
33:25
are questions that, you know, get
33:27
asked along the,
33:29
you know, later in the process that, you know,
33:31
we didn't prepare answers for us. We had to make them
33:33
up on the fly. Like, you you
33:35
know, Natalie, we need to figure out what what kind
33:37
of voice to give Natalie who is blinds the
33:39
system. And I
33:42
had to think of
33:44
you know,
33:44
what to do what
33:47
what what what she what we what does Guyana
33:49
could do to differentiate her voice that
33:51
wouldn't require a lot of effort?
33:53
Because we didn't wanna make it super hard for her
33:55
to do to do these ancillary characters.
33:58
So I I suggested, I think, on
34:00
the fly that, you know, give
34:02
her a slight southern accent, which
34:04
I I don't yeah. III I'm
34:06
I'm still pretty sure if Tatiana hasn't done
34:08
a clone with southern accent before.
34:11
So this felt, you know, like, a
34:13
good way to to differentiate this
34:15
particular character from the others. I like that
34:17
you thought that wouldn't be hard. Like, I
34:19
would be like excuse me?
34:22
Well, I mean, you
34:23
know, she doesn't have that many lines. She just
34:25
needs to give it, you know, a
34:27
a slight little Right? I mean -- Yeah. --
34:29
but yeah. Yeah. So we you
34:31
know, again, she and Natalie is an
34:33
ancillary character, not not not
34:35
a primary one.
34:37
So Yeah. Someone someone
34:38
in the comments said they like Natalie.
34:40
Yeah.
34:40
Yeah. I'm glad to hear that.
34:43
You know, III I'm
34:45
yeah. I I I'll be very interested to
34:48
know, you know, as
34:50
as the audience, you know, gives
34:52
us feedback, you know, which characters
34:55
they like which ones didn't work for them, all that
34:57
stuff, because that's that's valuable feedback,
34:59
and we love hearing
35:02
about it. But that's
35:04
something else I wanted to say about that, and I can't
35:06
remember what it is.
35:07
Yeah.
35:07
But Lots of them.
35:09
I mean, completely obviously, lots of comments talking about how great
35:11
Tatiana is, which we all agree.
35:14
Mhmm. But
35:16
do, like,
35:18
It does seem like it would be extra challenging for her to
35:21
differentiate between the clones with her voice
35:23
only when she doesn't have
35:26
the extra things. Do you feel like do you feel like
35:29
it's
35:30
I mean, it's definitely not
35:33
I don't know. I'm I don't know
35:35
how she could possibly do it with
35:37
that. Like, but, like, because people like,
35:39
even today, I someone tweeted and they
35:41
were, like, I don't understand how she's voicing all these
35:43
questions, and it's, like, literally just her voice. Well,
35:46
you you know, it's funny you should say that because in
35:48
episode three, there's a moment where, you know,
35:50
there's the clone call.
35:52
And all the different all everybody
35:54
in in clone club is talking to each
35:56
other on a on a video chat.
35:58
And just listening to them
36:00
talking back and forth in rapid
36:03
succession. It was just one of
36:05
the while just listening experiences
36:07
I'd ever had because I realized, that's the only
36:09
one person. You know? And
36:12
but but the way the way I believe
36:15
I hope I'm getting this right because, you know, I'm
36:17
not in the audio department and not not there for
36:19
the nuts and bolts of that. But the way I
36:21
I believe Tatiana has said that it
36:23
was done is that she basically
36:26
recorded all
36:28
the SAAR lines in one Yeah.
36:30
Shot and then all the Rachel lines and all the casino lines etcetera etcetera
36:33
so that she could stay in
36:35
the voice without, you know, without having
36:37
to shift back and forth. So
36:40
so I think that's, you know,
36:42
that's the way, you know, it had to work.
36:44
Because because the the idea
36:46
of her trying to switch back and
36:49
forth during a clone
36:52
call. You know? Yeah.
36:54
I mean, I I would leave to
36:56
layoffs, she could pull
36:58
it off. But she shouldn't have
36:59
to. Right? I mean, we should try to make this as easy
37:01
for her as possible. But now I'm
37:03
just
37:03
imagining her
37:06
doing it. Imagine we're doing it on TV. That would be really
37:08
good.
37:09
Wow. Someone asked bring bring
37:12
back on.
37:14
Yeah. Yeah.
37:14
Just, like, go really quick. It's, like, SNL, but, like just right.
37:17
Right. Right. Right. She needs
37:19
to get on SNL.
37:21
She definitely needs to get on. Someone said
37:22
that was one of the best scenes
37:25
in episode three. Yeah. III
37:28
agree. I liked it a lot.
37:29
And the freeze got a lot going for it. Someone
37:32
someone
37:32
else asked if there's any
37:34
Helena and Delphine scenes. I
37:37
can't remember. China Delfines scenes
37:41
or
37:41
interactions. Maybe at
37:44
the very end. Maybe
37:48
Yes. I think you're right. Thank you for thank
37:50
you for that poke. That that
37:53
yeah. There there there may be there
37:55
may be one at the very end.
37:57
You know, that of the challenging things, of course,
37:59
is that you want to come up with interesting combinations of
38:01
characters, but at the same time, there
38:03
are so many freaking
38:06
characters you know, I mean, this is a huge ensemble.
38:08
You know, even though it's a relatively
38:10
small cast because Tatiana does
38:12
so many of the roles,
38:14
it's a it's a huge ensemble cast. And, you know, we have
38:17
to we have to make sure
38:20
that, you know, we do
38:22
justice to as
38:24
many of them or all of them as we
38:27
can. So, you know, it's
38:29
not always possible
38:32
to find you
38:34
know, favorite
38:36
combinations that that, you know, we
38:38
can create a scene
38:39
for. Does it has to it has to serve the
38:41
story? And that's what we put first.
38:43
High
38:45
listeners and hello
38:48
gamers. It's Mary from the ops
38:50
team at Realm. Here was something exciting.
38:52
First off, remember one of your probably favorite shows from the
38:54
early two thousands? Yes, of course, I'm
38:57
talking about Firefly. Well, Summer
38:59
Glau aka River Tam is back with
39:02
an all new podcast, control
39:04
alt destroy. A video game
39:06
designer discovers that the game she created has stolen
39:08
as part of a top secret project and
39:10
maybe the only thing keeping the world from
39:12
plunging into war. Nations are competing
39:14
for real world resource and Team
39:17
USA hopes that bringing in the game's actual designer in secret
39:19
will give them the upper hand
39:21
they desperately need. But not everybody
39:23
is playing by
39:26
the rules. This show is perfect for fans of war games and ready player
39:28
one. It'll draw you in even if you've
39:30
never played RPG's. Control
39:32
all destroyers out now and available
39:34
wherever you get
39:36
your
39:36
podcasts. Listen and subscribe or learn more at realm dot f
39:39
m. Just a
39:41
reminder because somebody said they just came in, they
39:43
don't know what's happening.
39:46
We're talking about Orbital Black the next chapter, the
39:48
official podcast continuation. You can go
39:50
and find it anywhere you can
39:52
listen to podcasts on Apple Spotify.
39:56
Any of those places, YouTube, and
39:58
you can listen to it. And so there's
40:00
two seasons. We're in the middle of season
40:02
two right now. Someone
40:06
asked if there was, like, a clone from the I
40:08
think it was a clone specifically from the
40:10
show that you wish you
40:12
had been able
40:13
to, like, utilize
40:16
in the podcast? Well,
40:20
Crystal didn't get to make
40:22
an appearance in season Sorry,
40:25
Crystal fans. I'm spoiling that now. I would have
40:27
loved to bring her back. We managed
40:29
to work her into the
40:33
season one epilogue when we brought
40:35
back Jordan to do, like, one little
40:37
bit at the very, very end. It
40:39
was, like, a quota to
40:41
to the entire season. And and
40:44
Crystal was the clone
40:46
featured in that scene. I would
40:48
have liked to have utilized her again in season two, but we
40:50
didn't we didn't find,
40:52
you know, the we didn't find
40:54
a way to fit her in.
40:56
Which yeah. That that that's probably my
40:58
one regret in that
40:59
regard. Are there
41:01
any specific,
41:03
like, character interactions like that one person wanted to know about
41:06
Helane and Delfin. Are there any favorites that you
41:08
have? Like, that you were like, I just really wanted
41:10
to see these
41:10
two. I'm like really happy we got to
41:13
get to see these two characters I was
41:15
I was made to to
41:17
realize recently. I didn't III
41:19
can't say credit for this observation.
41:21
It never occurred to me. Before.
41:24
But I was made to realize
41:26
recently that
41:28
Rachel and Helena have never
41:31
had a scene together, at least that I can't
41:33
recall that I can recall. I would love to
41:35
see the two of them had a
41:37
scene together. But again, that's not gonna
41:39
happen in season two either, I'm afraid. But but,
41:42
yeah, that's that's that's that's an interesting
41:44
pairing,
41:45
I think. I really
41:48
liked I think it's an episode to the
41:50
casino and Rachel scenes
41:52
at the when they're on the
41:54
TV
41:54
show, like the morning show together. Yeah.
41:56
Yeah.
41:57
Yeah. Those were just fun. Yeah. I I
41:59
enjoyed, you know, when
42:01
when those sequences were
42:04
being written, I really enjoyed
42:06
reading them and listening to
42:08
them performed. I think
42:10
it was really gratifying because
42:13
we we thought, yeah, this this is an interesting
42:15
moment because, again, it's it
42:18
it it it was another
42:20
glimpse into Rachel Zabelle Duchenne, but at the same
42:22
time, it all you know, and it's a moment
42:24
of life surprise for Cassina because,
42:26
you know, she's not used to, you
42:30
know, Rachel you know,
42:32
trying to having
42:34
to her defense. You know?
42:37
It's not it's not it's not it's not
42:39
what she's known for. And but but, you know, eight years
42:41
have gone by. You know, you mentioned earlier about,
42:43
you know, the way characters have changed.
42:46
I I
42:48
wanna remind I think it's good to remind the audience that when you're doing the
42:50
story set eight years after the
42:52
characters were last seen, we have to
42:54
come we have
42:56
to expect you know, a certain amount of evolution. You know, you
42:58
wanna make and that's and that's the time
43:00
rope you have to walk, writing and and
43:02
producing a show
43:04
like this, is you want the characters to
43:06
be familiar and relatable,
43:08
but you also don't want people to think
43:10
that they've just been stagnating for a year.
43:14
You know, and remaining exactly.
43:15
Right. You know,
43:15
so it's it's a it's a fine line to
43:18
walk, but I think I think our writers pulled
43:20
it off.
43:21
I think so too. I love season
43:24
two. Right. I'm excited
43:26
for everyone to hear it. Is there you've you've
43:28
already teased a lot about season
43:29
two. Is there anything
43:31
else that we haven't talked about. Like, we talked a little bit about
43:33
casino and scenes that I Right.
43:36
I I yeah.
43:38
I I want people to to look
43:42
forward to
43:45
from really, really what I think
43:47
are really, really beautiful and and powerful character
43:50
moments for a lot of these
43:52
characters. You mentioned casino and Rachel
43:54
on television, They
43:56
have another moment coming up together that I can't wait
43:58
for people to to to listen
44:01
to. There's some great Helena
44:03
stuff coming down
44:06
the pipe. There's some awesome Sarah's
44:08
stuff. And and
44:12
and, again, Rachel,
44:14
we we made
44:16
up for, you know, the
44:18
the scarcity of Rachel in season
44:21
one. And, you know, not that she takes Socrates
44:23
into it by any stretch. She get she
44:25
does get more airtime and
44:28
what there is of her
44:30
is is pretty
44:31
awesome, I think. Somebody
44:32
asked if Art and Priyanka
44:33
are a couple in season
44:35
two. If what? If
44:37
Art and
44:37
Priyanka are a couple.
44:40
Oh, yes. They are. They are
44:42
still a couple. That's what I thought. I
44:43
thought so. Oh, there was some
44:46
mention that it's it's to
44:48
Joshua. It's it's
44:50
Joshua. That
44:52
his his girlfriend's name is Joshua.
44:55
Oh, right. Yep. I mean, that's
44:57
that's
44:57
that's that's RJ, either
45:00
way.
45:01
Yeah. Cool. Oh, some people said
45:03
they like what they're
45:06
hearing. Great.
45:06
You like me. You can
45:07
find we're kinda running at it.
45:10
We're we're at the end of our time here, but
45:13
We're ready. Wow.
45:15
But I know. Yeah. Oh, there's so much to talk
45:18
about. So maybe we're gonna
45:20
we're gonna try to have some more of these throughout the
45:22
season. Awesome.
45:24
And get to keep talking about as the season goes because there's
45:26
only three episodes out so
45:27
far, so there's still a lot
45:29
to happen. Okay. I hope people
45:31
keep listening because it
45:34
it keeps getting better and better this
45:36
season. III can't wait for
45:38
them to listen to the rest
45:40
of it. And and, yeah,
45:42
please, you know, reach
45:44
out to reach out to realm or to
45:46
me on Twitter. Let us know what you
45:48
think. You know, the the Twitter account for Realm is Realm Media,
45:50

46:23

46:28

46:30
awesome. So I hope anybody who

46:33
checks it
46:34
