Hi , kids , hockey Mom , christy , here , the

1:08

next time you get stuck on a thing for

1:10

a poem or an essay , I

1:13

encourage you to put down your sticks

1:15

and pick up a pen and think

1:17

hockey . My kids did , and

1:20

they did really well with every

1:22

essay and poem they ever wrote about hockey

1:24

. Here's what I'm going to share with you now . My

1:26

son wrote this when he was 14 years old

1:29

. He was a defenseman , number 29

1:31

. He called it challenged and

1:33

inspired by hockey . He was 14 years

1:35

old when he wrote this . Here we go I

1:38

defy convention through my work ethic

1:41

, which developed and grew through my years

1:43

of playing hockey . My generation

1:45

has grown up expecting things to come

1:47

to them instantly , in a snap

1:49

, so much so we've been

1:51

dubbed Generation . Now Please

1:54

don't lump me into that category . I'm

1:56

the type of person who likes to work toward a

1:58

goal , no matter how long it may take . When

2:01

I started playing hockey at the age of eight

2:03

, most of the kids around me were tremendously

2:06

more advanced . They started skating

2:08

as soon as they could walk . That

2:10

certainly didn't give me the edge in

2:12

this fast , infurious sport , but

2:15

instead of hanging up the skates

2:17

, I was motivated to work even

2:19

harder . I became determined

2:21

to catch up to the kids who could literally

2:24

skate circles around me and make

2:26

the elite travel team . I

2:28

dedicated an entire summer of

2:30

my young life to hockey , practicing

2:33

every day , shooting on the net in my driveway

2:35

over and over again until my parents

2:37

nagged me to come inside . When

2:40

I returned to the arena after that summer

2:42

, the coaches saw a totally

2:44

different skater . They were

2:47

shocked to see the kid who struggled so

2:49

much to keep up now leading

2:51

the pack . I tried out for the team

2:53

that year and made it . That

2:55

was one of the most satisfying feelings I

2:58

ever experienced dedicating

3:00

myself to a goal and then reaching

3:02

it . Hockey provided a good life

3:04

lesson for me . When I now set

3:07

a goal for myself , I not only want

3:09

to reach it , I have to exceed it

3:11

and reach heights that I didn't

3:13

even know were possible . That

3:16

is how I defy convention

3:18

in my life . By

3:20

Joey Burns .
