1:27

kiss. Oppression to button. Starbreaker

1:29

Simmons. Star? Stand

1:32

with him. Is that what he does?

1:34

Stop shouting. He's

1:38

not what you would call an

1:40

ancillary. Oh no, here come the

1:43

kiss times. Is that a positive

1:45

thing? Okay. Alright, but grab

1:47

me a nice old mellow candle. Why?

1:52

Why do that to the fans? Stop it.

1:54

Why? Because of the clock.

1:57

You're talking about 617. Hi,

2:00

Joe. You

2:03

do? Hey, fucko!

2:06

Do you like kids? Settle

2:08

down. Oh. Hello,

2:15

any what's up there kiss army? Tom

2:17

and Zeus, another episode of Shout It

2:19

Out Loudcast, episode 273, Robert Conte. Yeah,

2:25

this is a good one. This is a real

2:28

inside baseball for kiss nerds, so this

2:30

will be a nice conversation. Yeah,

2:32

exactly. And, you know, we've

2:35

taken a break from the interviews. We found

2:37

a good guy to get back into the

2:39

interviews, so we think you're going to enjoy

2:41

it. But we go backwards. Last

2:45

week we did an episode on the kiss

2:47

reset, Tom. And we

2:49

had a poll, didn't we? Yep.

2:51

So four options as always.

2:53

Which of these four are you most

2:55

looking forward to and or hoping for,

2:58

for the future of the band? And the options are

3:01

more off the sound boards, box sets, Gene

3:04

Simmons touring, Paul's

3:06

soul station, or the avatars.

3:10

49% said off the sound boards and box sets. 38% said

3:12

Gene touring. 8%

3:15

Paul and his soul station, and 5% with

3:17

the avatars. Couple

3:21

comments here. Vayne

3:24

Bandit. I'd have to go with off the

3:26

sound board sets because the possibilities feel endless

3:28

after the Poughkeepsie one. It's going

3:30

to be hard to top that rarity factor of that release,

3:32

but I can't help but hope for more

3:35

eras to eventually be covered. Yes, I

3:37

think that's what people want. Hot in

3:39

the shade, en masse, dynasty, whatever. Who

3:41

knows? His army general says nothing. I

3:44

would like to see nothing. I

3:46

don't know why

3:49

I just snorted. I

3:51

asked for nothing. I expected nothing. I got nothing. Well,

3:53

what do you expect for nothing? Exactly.

3:56

And the great lines from Jailhouse Rock. Yep.

4:00

Michael simply is his name. I

4:03

would love it if Gene Simmons played some solo

4:05

shows in the US and have Bruce Kewlik either

4:07

play with him or open for him. They could

4:10

cover all eras of KISS and solo materials. I

4:12

think everybody would obviously, absolutely love

4:14

that. I'd like the original band to get back

4:16

together and have the talent they had in the

4:18

70s. That's what I'd like to have happen. Well,

4:21

that's, yeah, I agree. Yeah.

4:24

Here's a good Twitter comment to

4:27

end with. Chad simply says, it's

4:30

over Johnny. That's

4:33

what we got for Twitter. Wonderful.

4:35

Over on the Book of

4:38

Face, Jason

4:40

Rocko. Good episode, guys. A KISS

4:42

reset is interesting notion,

4:44

but a KISS is a band with

4:46

an amazing 25-year career with 25-year retrospect

4:49

extension. What fans expect and what we

4:51

actually get are two different things. We'd

4:53

love more off the sound boards, box

4:56

sets, t-shirts, whatever. What it probably entails

4:58

is KISS music and prescription drug commercials

5:00

with different lyrics that pertain whatever drug

5:03

with a massive list of side effects

5:05

they're trying to push. They'll

5:07

show up some family playing fucking wiffle

5:09

ball together in the backyard with Lick

5:12

It Up in the background sung

5:14

by some female song singer for

5:16

hire. Thanks, guys.

5:18

The future of- that's the future of

5:20

KISS. Just ask the band Pilot. It's

5:23

magic ozimpic. Oh, God.

5:26

Ryan Courtney Cronin, Dold,

5:29

Ramaswamy, Culek

5:31

Lane, fucking

5:33

Simmons Tweed, fucking Rodham

5:36

Clinton. God. I'm

5:40

glad they all seem to be doing what they want.

5:42

They all deserve it. In regards to the Avatar shows,

5:44

I'd love to see them go through their 50 years.

5:47

They could depict all errors, including members

5:49

like Mark and Vinny, include a great

5:51

trip to Eric Carr, and include songs you haven't

5:53

heard in recent years. But what I think this

5:56

will be is more of their preview of their

5:58

final show, an animated Marvel movie. movie

6:00

set to kiss songs love

6:03

the conversation great idea of

6:05

a reset show thanks thank

6:08

you Ryan what the fuck is

6:10

Ryan he's

6:12

15 names person all right

6:15

on loud casters

6:18

Eric Solomon great episode always entertained it

6:20

would be cool if Peter could do

6:22

another album there was talks about that

6:24

I was here remember yeah I do

6:26

remember that do another album I'm not

6:28

sure what's gonna happen there yeah Josh

6:31

Brown congrats Brad

6:33

I hand the trophy over to you this

6:35

year brother an elite group of loud casters

6:38

that is Josh is talking about Brad

6:40

who won the ARC Madness

6:43

song tournament yep I

6:46

promise fellas if I travel through West

6:48

Virginia will have a beer I won't

6:50

let the in breeds eat you wrong

6:53

turn that's right

6:56

I really want to kissology for

6:58

but not stuff post-sympathy just stuff we

7:00

didn't get from the past

7:02

behind the scenes making of albums docs

7:04

with all the members of kiss we

7:07

can possibly get a doc with everyone

7:09

now the Beatles anthology style doc would

7:11

be an absolutely insane question

7:13

of the week maybe he and then he asked a

7:15

question of the week which well saved for later and

7:17

we might use at some point I have it yep

7:20

okay John

7:22

Whiteman I hope they came

7:24

up with something to get people interested in

7:26

and excited about the advertising TV series that

7:28

establishes them a superhero characters a really good

7:30

movie because I think people are going to

7:32

care less about kiss when 2027 gets

7:36

here yeah that's always been my concern

7:38

three years is a long fucking time in

7:40

the world of pop culture and everything so

7:44

yeah finest a crotini who just

7:46

had a birthday happy birthday Thunder

7:49

from Down Under that's right happy

7:51

birthday yes nice show

7:53

guys I feel there's something brewing it's

7:56

just way too quiet

7:58

45th anniversary of dynasty made a deluxe

8:00

version of that. Please. Just about

8:02

due for another Greatest Hits kiss. Anthems

8:05

maybe? Surely we'll get the CD video

8:07

from the end of the road shows? I

8:09

don't know brother. Do we really want those?

8:12

No, but they'll sell it.

8:16

Here's a Cleveland show of the end of

8:18

the road. Is Manchester, New

8:20

Hampshire? Is there any difference? No! No.

8:24

Nope. Tom, I'm going to go over

8:26

to YouTube! Alright. Carnival

8:28

of Souls is my favorite kiss album. It's

8:30

heavy, real emotional, deep and meaningful. I think

8:32

Bruce and a little bit of Gene is

8:34

the main contributor to that record. It is

8:37

his child. And maybe because of that, Paul's

8:39

ego dislikes this album and doesn't

8:41

give it more attention to commercials. I

8:43

love how like the Carnival of Souls

8:45

shit is still coming

8:47

in. Still, yep. Even on a kiss

8:50

reset episode. Yeah, I love that

8:52

too. Tom, I'm going to hand

8:54

it back to you. Alright, let's do a

8:56

couple Instagram things here. Frank

9:00

Joseph Rockstar Guitar. Been

9:03

listening every day, maybe have a show with three

9:05

things you wish KISS had done over their

9:08

50 year career. Ah,

9:10

Frank, go way back to the beginning

9:12

of the early days of Shouted Out

9:14

Loudcast. We did have a wish episode.

9:18

Things we wish they did, things we wish that they

9:20

did not do. But

9:22

like the suggestion, I like it. Junior

9:24

Vintage, my request of all Shouted

9:26

Out Loudcast listeners is to go

9:28

over to the Dom Damage episode

9:30

with Peter Dankelson. I discovered

9:32

this guy through social media and his story

9:35

in overcoming obstacles is a real inspiration. His

9:37

guitar playing is killer. Awesome stuff,

9:39

guys. You are on a roll. Yes, Junior

9:41

Vintage, we usually don't read any kind of

9:43

feedback for our Dom Damage episodes, but if

9:46

people are going to chime in on Shouted

9:48

Out Loudcast posts, and especially with an episode

9:50

with Pete, we're absolutely positively going to read

9:52

it because he was fantastic and like you

9:55

said, quite an inspiration. So if you missed

9:57

that, check that out. And

9:59

let's blow through. We've got a ton of great ones

10:01

here. Always appreciate the emails. Let's

10:03

read one from Mark Bomer. How

10:30

quote found and released legacy

10:32

kiss fans like me will not only be thrilled

10:35

It's not a reach to anticipate at least one

10:37

or more of the tracks will be performed by

10:40

the avatars Let's find out together

10:42

as always t and z great job

10:44

and thank you Thank

10:46

you mark good stuff his

10:49

reset from music vampire Will

10:52

listen to you two talk in the last episode about

10:54

the future of the kiss avatars. I had a scary

10:56

thought Imagine spending all

10:59

that money for a ticket

11:01

to see the avatars and

11:03

it's the end of the road set list We'd

11:07

still We'd still pay

11:10

because we're kiss tards I don't know what's

11:12

gonna happen But it'd be cool if each

11:14

song had a special video with effects and

11:16

Easter egg Showcase in the bank's history when

11:18

each song came out get ready

11:20

Zeus to his psycho circus Oh

11:25

God and now we'll finish up emails

11:27

one from our buddy Cameron holiday Really

11:30

insightful and thought-provoking episode this week fellas

11:32

I think you guys posed several theories

11:35

and possibilities that us Kts want to

11:37

know the answers to I Recall

11:39

one interview recently with a guest said that he

11:41

had spoken to Peter who told me was planning

11:43

to make a rock record What that exactly means?

11:45

I'm not sure and we just talked about that

11:48

I believe that Paul and Eric will return to

11:50

soul station when the time is right gene will

11:52

still promote the new projects the pop-up's creates And

11:54

ace will just continue being ace Bruce

11:57

and Tommy will continue to do events and hopefully

11:59

create some new music When the biopic

12:01

is finished, the band will be certainly going on

12:03

a press tour in support, so the spotlight will

12:05

again be on the group. As

12:07

far as everything else is concerned, I'm not sure

12:09

where the band goes from here, but as both of

12:11

you stated, it's an exciting time to be a

12:14

KISS fan because it's all up in the air. Anyways,

12:17

great episode, looking forward to the next

12:19

Cameron holiday. Yeah. Like I said

12:21

last week, it is kind of exciting for the first time in

12:23

a while to really not know what the hell's coming. But

12:26

that's that's emails. Again, we got a ton of great

12:28

ones. Thank you guys for sending them again. We do

12:30

read all of them, but we just can't read every

12:33

one of them during the show. So again, thank you

12:35

for all that sent something in. So

12:38

Tom, we're going to go back

12:40

to Facebook here and we're going

12:42

to read something from soon to

12:44

be legendary commentator, Ronnie, but

12:46

Charsky. Oh, God. I'm sure this will be

12:48

vulgar. I'm sure that with this

12:51

new Popo's deal will come lots of new

12:53

merch. The one

12:55

thing I'm hoping for is that they release

12:58

six dolls so

13:00

that we have a chance to fuck them as hard

13:04

as they fucked us all at

13:06

the final MSG show. Ronnie,

13:11

for always towing the line,

13:14

but still making it like suitable

13:17

to be said, you

13:19

have a gift and a talent, my friend. And

13:22

this week, your gift has made

13:24

you comment of the week.

13:29

Good answer. Good

13:31

answer. I like

13:34

the way you think. I'm

13:36

going to be watching you. Ronnie,

13:41

it's been a long time coming, brother. Good

13:43

stuff as always, my friend. Yep.

13:47

Tom, what we do next is we

13:49

go over to Patreon.

13:52

14:00

threw me off. And

14:03

this week we have a new person

14:05

that joined, and his name is Geno!

14:10

Right, yeah, Geno! So

14:12

I don't know if it's Geno from

14:15

the Celtics' Jumbotron? That

14:17

Geno likes dancing character? Yep. But

14:20

Geno joins us as a space man

14:23

16:25

our social media So please check us

16:27

out and join the family. Tom

16:30

what we do next is we go but it is. World.

16:33

Yeah. I'm. Let's

16:36

think. You. Got Gene

16:38

who's. Really? Make it the

16:40

biggest splash of all, right? Yup, Yep!

16:44

Genes band opened up the

16:46

latest Rock and Bruised venue

16:48

and Richfield Washington on Tuesday.

16:51

Ah! he did a show with

16:54

his band Bob Rent Woods, Jason

16:56

Walker and drummer Brine T T

16:58

and he also had special guest

17:01

call me. They. Are. A

17:03

form. That. Are he he? He

17:05

did a set list. Or

17:08

play a lot of songs. And of

17:10

course, as with T S, a lot

17:12

of people complaining about the set list

17:15

for me. Run this down quickly here.

17:17

Juice War Machine Detroit Rock City Weapons

17:19

Of Mass Destruction. He. Some

17:21

Speeds Motorhead cover Communication Breakdown Zeppelin cover

17:24

I Love It Loud shouted out loud

17:26

Love Gun Calling Doctor Love. Old

17:28

Jin Parasite with Tommy Say or Lincoln Up

17:31

with Tommy Say or are you ready Hundred

17:33

Thousand years? Let Me go Rock'n'roll I was

17:35

Me Sullivan You rock and roll all nite.

17:37

Zeus video think when you see that set

17:39

list. Way too many end of

17:42

the road set Assad's it pretty much is

17:44

and of the road. I will

17:46

say this guy. I. Know there

17:48

are people out there that are always like

17:50

all you guys just be it's look at

17:52

you Just were getting some live performances like

17:55

just enjoy that I get it. Yeah I

17:57

do Now I will say this. Weapons of

17:59

Mass. destruction, Ace of Spades communication

18:01

breakdown, that's three. Are

18:05

you ready? That's four. Four?

18:08

That's it. And actually let me go rock and

18:10

roll. And

18:12

actually, piracy. But they made

18:15

those, some of those songs made the air appearance on

18:17

the end of the road, too.

18:19

So I just, I

18:21

said to Tom, when Tommy, me

18:23

and you were talking about this off the air, I

18:25

said, my thinking is it's

18:28

their first show. Gene

18:30

does, you know, new members, a whole

18:32

new band with exception of Brett

18:35

Woods who played with them in the Vegas show.

18:37

It's all new people. Let them get used to

18:40

some of the songs, let them get comfortable. Now

18:42

it's not, and this is the thing, it's

18:45

not Jeremy and Ryan who know Gene

18:47

well and can push them. Hey, hey,

18:49

hey, let's do fucking, she's

18:51

so European. Like I

18:53

don't know if they have that relationship with him

18:55

to be doing that yet. Okay,

18:57

so it's a little bit different. Let's see

18:59

what happens. Yeah, I think

19:02

one of the reasons I think people were a

19:04

little bit, it was a

19:06

combination of yeah, it's the end of the road

19:08

set list. And I

19:10

don't know if they were doing what we were doing,

19:12

which is comparing to what we got when we saw

19:14

him at the Gene Simmons event at the Rio in

19:16

Vegas, because that set

19:18

list was plaster caster, charisma, domino,

19:21

nothing to lose, going blind, watching

19:23

you, deuce, radioactive, I was

19:25

made for loving you, Christine 16 unholy

19:27

and let me go rock and roll. That's

19:30

what you want to hear when you see a Gene Simmons solo

19:32

band. You want to hear that. Okay. But

19:35

you're right. It's a new

19:37

band. Gene hasn't really performed live in a

19:39

couple of months. Those songs are fresh in

19:41

his head from being beaten into his brain

19:43

for the end of the road tour for

19:45

four years. So I get it. But you're

19:47

right. I don't think

19:50

it's unfair to

19:52

criticize if

19:54

this set list continues. I don't and

19:57

the people say, Oh, just be happy.

19:59

Just be happy. Kiss fans whenever

20:01

happy yeah get a grip whenever

20:03

happy and what's the event the

20:05

event is opening up a rockin bruise

20:07

It's not everybody just a hundred and

20:09

fifty dollars and ran to go in

20:11

here And and it's a big

20:14

state and they've been added to the head

20:16

stick to the hits Yep, yeah, I mean

20:18

how can you complain real but I think

20:20

but I think everybody should be jacked because

20:22

he gene looked good He sounded good. He

20:24

seemed energetic and he was moving around he

20:26

was fired up with Tommy Which I love

20:28

seeing Tommy still involved, so I think forget

20:30

about the set list I think it's something

20:32

exciting to see the gene was that good.

20:34

Let's see What if he goes on tour

20:36

and he starts off with this and then

20:38

he starts adding songs subtracting songs? Yeah, then

20:41

how can you complain you don't know what

20:43

you're gonna get so that's who I'd like

20:46

to see I'm not giving him a hard

20:48

time for this. Let's see what happens the

20:50

fact is though He did put in some

20:52

rich weird shit in this not to mention.

20:54

He played 18 fucking songs Yeah, yeah,

20:56

you know, so it's good stuff.

20:58

What happens? Yeah, right. We'll see Yeah,

21:00

I don't know Paul is fucking got

21:02

a art thing coming up. I'm sure

21:07

Aces still I think I'm not sure if he's still

21:09

on tour right now. I think he's taking a little

21:11

bit of a break Yeah,

21:13

it's getting tiring here, but I

21:16

need a break open up that shit Hi

21:20

bunions are killing me Gonna

21:22

get off these feet I'm

21:24

just a little a little out of shape.

21:26

Well, it'll get a little pudgy Yeah,

21:31

so to answer your question ace is on a

21:33

break the next time he plays is May 26th

21:35

where Mohegan's

21:37

son in Connecticut not too far from

21:39

us guys. Let's play some cards Remember

21:41

I had a song years back five

21:43

times stud ace in the hole Right

21:49

What do you got flippy cards? My

21:52

money on black like this

21:54

is like I Remember

21:57

quite how to play this game I

22:01

got 20 hit me sir

22:03

you have 20 that's okay feel

22:05

lucky I'm hoping I'm hoping I get

22:08

a one we don't have

22:10

an ace of faith we don't we don't have ones

22:12

in the deck sir they called aces

22:14

like your name oh geez I

22:21

don't know what Peter's doing nothing in the news about

22:23

him no Bruce's got a tour going up I think

22:25

he's doing Finland for a couple shows but yeah and

22:27

then yeah he posted some on

22:29

his social media with that we shared he's

22:32

got some really cool t-shirts if you're in

22:34

yes yes go support him yeah very

22:36

cool stuff but the pretty the theme

22:38

oriented hot the shade crazy nights that

22:40

kind of stuff very cool stuff it's

22:42

Bruce of course it's gonna be on

22:44

me jumped in with Jean he was

22:46

doing something with his is his wine

22:48

recently was on that fucking backslip we

22:50

want to do

22:55

some juggling throw some fire

22:57

bombs do some backflips you

22:59

go on the ledge you fall down we

23:01

all have a laugh spot key you know

23:06

it's only three floors up you won't get

23:08

hurt too bad I'm sorry but that's how

23:10

it's done when you describe what Tommy was

23:12

doing like add Tommy's up on stage he's

23:14

having a good time we're gonna

23:16

have a couple guys a couple broads around laying

23:19

out we're gonna do our whole thing we want

23:21

you to do some juggling you want to hire

23:23

a kid's clown well

23:27

it's like an orgy going on in

23:29

the middle of the scene why would

23:31

you want to hire an adult juggler

23:34

a hurricane I do I do balloon

23:36

handles for children you do huh you

23:38

don't do any you

23:41

know juggle fireballs no

23:45

I don't but she's rocky the

23:47

clown anyways yeah let

23:49

me speak to Sparky Sparky

23:52

Sparky the clan how you doing fruitcake

23:56

I say this all the time poor Robert Conti

24:01

I'm wondering what we're talking about. The

24:03

Jerky Boys, Robert, the Jerky Boys. Anyway,

24:05

Tom, let's take a quick little break,

24:07

huh? What do you say? All

24:10

right. Let's take a little break. I used to juggle

24:12

fire bombs. One blew off

24:14

in my hand and I almost

24:16

had to miss the show in Fort

24:18

Lauderdale in 1976. Hello,

24:24

Pantheon Podcast listeners. Christian Swain here to

24:26

tell you more about my experience with

24:28

Raycon earbuds. Our family now

24:30

has three pairs of Raycon earbuds around

24:33

the house. My wife just grabbed a

24:35

pair of the Headphone Pros to replace

24:37

some headphones from a company that was

24:39

double the price. Yes,

24:41

she loves them. Now, if you haven't pulled

24:43

the trigger on a pair of Raycons, or

25:03

noise cancellation, ergonomic design,

25:05

25:07

lets you pair with two devices

25:10

at once. New charge function, three

25:12

customizable sound styles, plus awareness mode

25:15

available in a variety of vibrant

25:17

new colors to complement any and

25:19

all skin tones. I

25:21

even have a pair of earbuds in

25:23

a cool green color. I have tried

25:25

just about every earbud known to humankind,

25:27

and these Raycons are fantastic. Seriously,

25:30

if you've been wanting to check out

25:32

27:30

that the represses and box sets are likely,

27:33

this is an absolutely perfect time to talk

27:35

to him. On the show,

27:37

you guys are clearly talking about why do

27:39

they stop wearing the remasters before Smashes Thrashers

27:41

Hot in the Shade and other stuff like

27:43

that. Well, that guy has all the

27:45

answers you guys have been seeking. Now

27:48

before I read the rest of his email and I'm

27:51

not going to read the rest of

27:53

his email, but you guys get the point. We

27:57

were already in contact with Robert for quite

27:59

some time. to come on and we

28:01

found some time at work for both of us. So

28:04

yes, I'm glad there was

28:06

somebody out there that saw the like

28:08

the logical jump from the

28:10

kiss reset to Robert Conti.

28:12

We knew what we were doing. Yep,

28:15

perfect. And we were glad

28:17

to get him. So

28:19

without further ado, Robert B.

28:21

Conti. This

28:25

week our guest is an editor,

28:27

writer and pump culture consultant. And

28:30

he is also the

28:33

kiss catalog consultant for over

28:35

20 albums. Okay, and

28:37

that you know him and we know

28:39

him from the man behind

28:41

the notes for those amazing CD remasters

28:43

that came out in the 90s. We're going to talk

28:45

about that and so much more. We're

28:47

thrilled tonight to have a super kiss

28:50

fan. Robert V. Conti is in the

28:52

house. Robert, welcome to the show, buddy.

28:55

Thank you guys so much. I appreciate

28:57

being invited on. Awesome. Here I

28:59

am. Here we go. Let's go. Awesome. All right.

29:02

So I remember like Tom, I'm

29:05

a CD guy. I'm still buying CDs. If you

29:08

can see behind. Oh, I love it. I love

29:10

it. I need the physical

29:12

product. And after and I tell this all

29:14

the time to our listeners after going to

29:16

vinyls, to cassettes, to CDs. I'm

29:19

like, I'm not going back. So I

29:22

was buying those CDs. And like

29:24

some as you know, we're in care.

29:27

Some sounded better than others. So

29:30

when the Kiss remasters came

29:32

out, I can't tell

29:34

you, I don't know if I bought them all. When

29:36

as soon as they came out, one day

29:39

after day, whenever they got released, but I

29:41

jumped on it. And then there was

29:43

these notes. And I'm like, Who the hell is this guy? Robert

29:46

Conti. But I enjoyed reading it.

29:48

I loved hearing about all the

29:51

comments and seeing everything there. And

29:53

I was just like, like Tom just

29:56

the hell's this guy? No,

29:58

I wasn't on the. internet at the time

30:01

like to go there was no way to know so it

30:03

was just a fun thing and then over

30:06

time we got to know who you are

30:08

in the kiss world and

30:10

we're fascinated so let's just take

30:12

a quick step back and

30:15

find out how you became the

30:18

man for kiss to

30:21

put in all the comments for the remastered

30:23

version of their CDs how did

30:25

you get introduced to kiss and then

30:27

how did you really get introduced to

30:29

kiss well you know kiss

30:31

has been you know the more I think about it

30:34

you guys know I'm working on my memoir

30:36

about my days as the kiss band and

30:39

also working with the band and also

30:41

working with Mercury Polygram Def Jam and

30:44

it's really funny you think

30:46

that you remember everything crystal clear

30:48

and then you open up a

30:51

box of stuff and you look through it you say

30:53

oh wait a minute oh

30:55

that took place before this oh wait

31:00

that is a sign of getting older you know

31:04

you're all there we're all there but

31:06

you know basically in a nutshell

31:08

you know kiss has been in

31:11

my consciousness probably since the

31:13

third grade and and

31:15

I'm talking 1977 okay and the reason you

31:20

know why I remember me personally

31:22

I got as a Kris Kringle I know

31:24

if you guys remember Kris Kringles were in

31:26

you know around the holiday season at schools

31:29

back in the 70s last schools

31:31

did this a lot didn't but um you

31:33

know you would pick you you would pick

31:35

a classmate's name out of a Santa

31:37

hat oh okay you were

31:40

responsible for giving that particular child

31:42

a gift the day before Christmas

31:44

Eve if I remember correctly okay

31:47

and a fellow classmate gave me

31:49

the kiss model Chevy van kid

31:51

oh no that's the yeah

31:54

right right that he should

31:56

still be your best friend today yeah you know

31:58

it's funny I've been looking for him. He's not

32:00

on social media, which is crazy. So either he

32:03

wants to be hidden or

32:05

he's dead. I don't know

32:08

what it is. Maybe

32:10

one day I'll find him.

32:12

But, you know, so Kiss

32:14

was in my consciousness from that. It was

32:17

also from the Marvel Comics, the

32:19

two Marvel Comics that came out because

32:21

I was already an avid comic collector

32:24

by the time I was eight

32:26

years old. And then the Kiss, Dunrus

32:28

trading cards. I mean, Kiss was

32:30

everywhere. You go to the store,

32:32

the Halloween Kiss costumes. I mean,

32:34

you know, for that time period,

32:36

there were only the other, there

32:39

were two other iconic properties that,

32:41

you know, were able to penetrate

32:43

basically everything at that time. One

32:46

was Star Wars, right? Star

32:48

Wars was everywhere. But, you

32:50

know, believe it or not, the year before that was

32:52

the 1976 King

32:54

Kong. If you remember, if you,

32:56

you know, if you're 54, I'm going to

32:58

be 54. If you were 50,

33:01

you know, 52, 53, 54. I

33:03

remember Jessica Lane. There you

33:05

go. I was going to say,

33:07

me too. I remember her in

33:10

that movie. Absolutely. But, you know,

33:12

the thing was the merchandising campaign

33:14

for that 1976 King

33:16

Kong was out of this world.

33:18

I mean, you know, basically almost

33:20

every merchandise category at that

33:22

time, everything from

33:24

King Kong Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to,

33:27

you know, the glasses, you know, the,

33:29

you know, the painted glasses, the posters,

33:31

t-shirts. Oh, yeah. I didn't remember it.

33:34

Oh, yeah. No, that stuff hit

33:36

big, hit big. So, you know,

33:38

most people remember the Star Wars

33:41

Blitz, but King Kong proceeded by

33:43

a year. So, so, so Kiss

33:45

was in that same kind of

33:47

mold, you know, and I'll

33:50

never forget, there was a girl in third

33:52

grade who for whatever reason

33:54

brought Kiss Lovegun to school. And

33:57

she got in trouble because,

33:59

you know, She got in trouble and

34:01

she got sent to the principal's office. I

34:04

was in touch with my first school's principal

34:07

until she passed away last year. One

34:11

time I was reminiscing with her and I said, oh, do

34:13

you remember when So and So brought in the KISS album,

34:16

You Got So Upset? She goes, yes, because do you know

34:18

what a love gun is? It's a penis.

34:24

Why is an eight-year-old girl bringing in

34:26

an album that's titled penis?

34:29

Oh, wow. Jesus Christ. That's

34:32

awesome. Wow, that's awesome.

34:34

That's great. And

34:36

I'm still friends with a couple of those

34:38

kids in that class and they definitely remember

34:40

that particular day. So

34:42

anyway, the point being is that ever

34:44

since childhood, you know,

34:46

Batman, Godzilla, King Kong

34:49

and KISS are

34:51

in my consciousness in one form or

34:53

another, you know? And

34:56

then, you know, preteen years happened

34:58

and I got into, you know,

35:00

early MTV, the whole, you know,

35:02

the top 40 that was constantly

35:05

rotating on the channel. Somehow

35:07

I would always miss the I Love It Loud video,

35:09

which I just could not understand. I

35:12

literally would catch it as the ending with

35:14

the glowing eyes. I would never, you know,

35:16

I would never… It was hard to… Yeah.

35:19

You never got to see the kids sitting down with his

35:21

parents having dinner. You never got to see that part. Oh,

35:23

no, no. And the thing was, you know, it was funny

35:25

because it motivated me to want to buy a

35:28

VCR. So you know, my father, for my

35:30

13th birthday, dad, I need a VCR. I need a VCR. He

35:33

was kind enough to get it for me. But

35:35

then I would tape them TV all night and they

35:37

would never, you know, never show that one again, which

35:39

is so weird. But anyway, flash

35:42

forward to September of 83 when

35:44

KISS took the makeup off on live on

35:46

MTV. We thought it was

35:48

live at the time. We later learned it was prerecorded.

35:51

But you know, watching

35:54

that live compilation of Rock and Roll

35:56

all night that they did really

35:58

kind of opened up. the floodgates for

36:01

me as far as being

36:03

interested in their music. So it's funny, in a

36:06

way it was the KISS merchandise that

36:09

got me in a way

36:11

into KISS, but it was actually that night where

36:14

all of a sudden I'm like, oh my god, this sounds

36:16

great, this is great, I want to know more about this

36:18

band, so on and so forth. And

36:21

a couple months later my father had split. And

36:25

I was close to my dad, so I

36:27

was very down about that, and my

36:29

grades started to suffer. And my

36:32

grandmother, bless her soul, she said to

36:34

me, listen, I don't want you to

36:36

fall behind your schooling and stuff, you're

36:39

going through a tragic thing, you're going to get through it.

36:41

So she goes, I'll make you a deal. I go, what's

36:43

that? She goes, if you keep

36:46

up your grades, work

36:48

hard and stay in school, focus on that, I'll buy

36:50

you a KISS album every week. Wow.

36:55

And I'm like, done. Because

37:01

up to that point, I had

37:03

only borrowed friends records. I was

37:05

living around four bucks a

37:10

week allowance, you couldn't do much back

37:12

then, you can't do anything with it

37:14

now. But back then, four bucks, you

37:16

were lucky to buy one sound savers

37:19

cassette if you were lucky. So anyway,

37:21

my grandmother every week, and the coolest

37:23

thing about this, it was

37:25

a surprise every week, I didn't know which one

37:27

because I didn't know the discography at the time.

37:32

Yeah, so every week was something different.

37:34

So, you know, the first one was

37:37

KISS Dynasty. And it

37:39

was just so cool to open up that shrink wrap,

37:41

pull out that order form, get that poster,

37:45

hung that poster on my wall with

37:47

all the contacts and everything. The album

37:49

itself was just, amazing,

37:51

astounding, fell in love with it

37:53

immediately. The following week, I

37:55

got Lick It Up, Lick It Up was my

37:57

second album. But then the third week was the

38:00

first kiss album and oh wow

38:02

and I'm telling you I just I

38:04

stared at that album for hours because

38:06

I loved that photo that first year

38:08

or two it just yeah oh my

38:11

that to me is quintessential kiss you

38:14

know I mean just that just that kiss

38:16

through a live era I

38:18

that's my personal favorite you like the

38:20

silver and black not when they got

38:23

bright colors and everything huh you

38:25

like the darker kiss yeah I

38:27

like the dark mean skinny yeah

38:29

scary scary yeah skinny jean was

38:32

yeah tom loves oh yeah oh

38:34

yeah listen you look at those

38:36

early photographs like those early photo

38:38

sessions it that stuff's incredible and

38:41

it was so funny because even

38:43

at the age of 13 I'm comparing the

38:46

dynasty album cover to the first album cover

38:48

and I'm like man they look so different

38:50

I'm trying to figure out how and you

38:53

know that in itself you

38:55

know was very intriguing and the

38:57

different styles of music now just

38:59

those three albums you're like dynasty

39:02

lick it up which you know was so heavy

39:05

and fast to me I said man that's a

39:07

masterpiece and then um and then the

39:09

first kiss album which you know has all those great hits

39:11

that we all love but you know it's

39:13

a different kind of sound for that you

39:15

know for those songs that I wasn't used

39:17

to listening to it on alive so getting

39:20

a kiss album almost every week was

39:22

quite an adventure it was

39:24

like you know learning all about

39:26

the different you know members that sang

39:29

trying to figure out who sang what

39:31

parts and and um just

39:33

you know learning as we went along hardened hell

39:35

was album four and that album to me I

39:38

mean I know a lot of people don't like

39:40

the sound of it it's very tinny yeah it's

39:42

one of my favorites it really is one of

39:44

my great albums and the songs

39:46

are great yeah oh yeah the songs are

39:49

great you know um and

39:51

uh you know it went from there so uh

39:54

you know my buying you know I got

39:56

to a point where I could actually you

39:58

know afford my own stuff What

40:01

drove me buying different Kiss records was

40:03

which ones were on sale that week.

40:07

Right, right. Because

40:09

a lot of people from the early

40:12

80s may remember this. When

40:14

Lick It Up came out and the Lick

40:16

It Up video and they really started touring

40:18

without the makeup, all

40:20

the deep discount stores were unloading

40:23

Kiss merchandise so cheap. That's right.

40:27

I grew up in Massapequa, Long Island. There

40:30

was a closeout store there called Oddlot.

40:33

My friend Pete and I went in there one

40:35

day, stacks of Kiss dolls, 99 cents a piece.

40:37

Oh, no way. Could

40:39

you imagine that? 99 cents a piece. Again, $4

40:42

a week, Robert, hey, I can buy one set. I'm

40:47

happy. That's awesome. Everything

40:53

wound up being really cheap. The Kiss posters

40:55

that were in closeout were only like 99

40:58

cents. I'm talking about Spirit of

41:00

76. The motorcycle shots, all

41:02

that great stuff. The

41:08

Kiss costumes, $1.99. If

41:11

you were a Kiss fan in

41:14

83, 84, and

41:16

you wanted to learn more about Old

41:18

Kiss, original Kiss, that was the perfect

41:20

time. Perfect. Perfect for me. As

41:26

time went on, again, my

41:28

collection was primarily either what my

41:30

grandmother got me or records

41:32

I bought used at the various shops

41:34

in my neighborhood. I

41:36

started to notice, hey,

41:39

this alive that I bought used, why

41:42

is it a blue label with silver

41:44

lettering when the one my

41:46

friend Brian let me is tanned with

41:49

record and film works? I

41:52

started every time I see a

41:54

difference, whether it was small or big, I would

41:56

buy it. At some point,

41:58

I had like 13. 13

42:00

copies of alive. And

42:03

my mother truly thought that there was something

42:05

mentally wrong with me. Well,

42:09

that's common now. People, everybody's doing that now

42:11

with vinyl. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

42:14

But every time I would, every time

42:16

I'd see a difference in the way

42:18

it was printed, or the

42:20

way the label looked, or,

42:22

you know, sometimes the

42:25

album covers were printed on really

42:27

crappy, thin cardboard stock. And then

42:29

other times, they'd be printed on

42:31

this, you know, very thick, white

42:34

varnish or matte. And I'm

42:36

saying to myself, it's amazing how all these

42:38

things are happening. You know, no reason why

42:40

I couldn't figure that out yet. But

42:43

you know, every time I would see a different record, and

42:46

if it was different one way or another, I'd pick it up.

42:49

And, you know, before long, like I said,

42:51

I had like 13 copies of alive and

42:54

multiple copies of other records. And

42:56

you know, my family just couldn't understand, you

42:58

know, my thinking behind this. But I looked

43:01

at it as being a comic collector. I'm

43:03

like, wait a minute. I'm like, comics, it's

43:05

like baseball cards. It's like, so,

43:08

you know, around the time

43:10

Polygrams started reissuing these records

43:12

at full price, you

43:14

know, I was in my

43:17

neighborhood was a weird paradigm. You could go

43:19

to the mall, you could go to Sunrise

43:21

Mall, Woolworth would have all the

43:23

original pressings on sale. They were cutouts, but

43:26

they were on sale. You can get the

43:28

solo albums for $1.99 with

43:30

the posters and everything. But yet,

43:32

if you went to Sam Goody in the

43:34

same mall, the reissues with

43:36

the barcodes and everything would be full

43:39

price without any of the Chachkes. It

43:41

was so crazy. Yeah, but I you

43:43

know, Mr. Mr. obsessed, completist

43:45

collector had to have everything,

43:47

you know, oh, yeah. So

43:51

I built this up and as

43:53

time went on, I would write down

43:55

originally, I used my Coleco Adam computer to

43:57

write this. Oh,

44:00

yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah,

44:04

I had a Coleco vision that had

44:06

an expandable Adam computer

44:08

kit got yeah and and Started

44:11

writing notes about what was different on

44:13

all these pressings and everything and You

44:16

know the time came, you know years later.

44:18

I was very fortunate to

44:21

have been invited To

44:23

see kiss at the ritz when

44:26

they did the the revenge pre

44:28

show from him And

44:31

as circumstance would have it I

44:33

wound up standing right next to Jean's

44:35

mother Florence And we had

44:37

a you know, we were talking had a good rapport She

44:39

wound up introducing me to Jean and Paul and

44:42

it's first time I was with I

44:46

got to shake Jean's hand and Paul's hand and You

44:49

know, I'm sorry backwards a little

44:51

bit. I had written a comic book called rock and

44:53

roll comics Yeah to

44:55

that one. Yep and and you know when

44:57

when the publisher published it You know, we

44:59

weren't thinking we were gonna getting these great

45:01

numbers and why I'm not going into like

45:03

fourth or fifth printing was crazy I

45:06

have one Cool

45:09

and I gave a copy to G and I say hey

45:11

look what I did. He looks at Paul He's there because

45:13

he goes what an original idea

45:15

You know You

45:20

know making fun of me because yeah, of course

45:22

on the two Marvel comics Yeah But um first

45:24

time I met him and you know, I had

45:26

offered to give them my report that night and

45:29

I kind of got the Brush off but

45:31

then they wound up doing a signing not

45:33

too much later at Tower Records in

45:36

Car place to promote a live three

45:39

and So one I'd already been in touch with

45:41

at Mercury who was very aware of who I

45:43

was because I was constantly mailing them letters Hey,

45:46

you made a mistake on smashes thrasses

45:48

and hips. You made a mistake of this you

45:50

made a mistake on that What are you gonna fix it?

45:54

They were kind of like oh here here's the

45:56

pain in the ass kiss fan. Let's let's yeah,

45:59

let's let's hook him up for Live

46:01

3. So I got to meet Larry Mazer

46:04

and I had said to him,

46:06

listen, I have this envelope for

46:08

Gene and Paul. And at

46:10

first he took it and I thought he was going

46:12

to throw it on a pile or something. But I

46:14

said, no, no, it's very, very important. And

46:17

I said, oh, I also have a message for

46:19

Paul. And he goes, what's that? And I go,

46:21

well, one of his old band mates, a fellow

46:23

by the name of Neil Teeman, is a classmate

46:25

of mine in my writing classes

46:28

at night. He's in my

46:30

class and he wanted to convey his

46:32

success and congratulations to Paul. And

46:35

Paul stopped the meeting and goes, you know, Neil Teeman? I go,

46:37

yeah, he goes, come over here. And

46:39

he goes, what do you got? And

46:41

I pulled out the report and I

46:44

said, listen, your catalog is being basically

46:46

just destroyed by a polygram

46:48

and Gene and Paul are going

46:50

through the pages real quickly. And they

46:53

said, are you kidding? I said, no, I

46:55

said, you can grab some stuff here, Tower

46:57

right now. See it for yourself. And

47:00

I bought a Paul Stanley solo album that

47:02

didn't have the poster in it that the

47:04

barcode on it. And I

47:06

said, look, I pulled it out and

47:08

it was no, no, you know, Paul's

47:10

face was on the original record label.

47:13

That was gone. No poster, no order

47:15

form, really crappy presentation.

47:17

They went from the very thick

47:19

whiteboard to the crappy cardboard pressboard.

47:22

And I said, listen, this is one of many.

47:24

And I said, you know, the cassettes are even

47:27

worse. But I said the final

47:29

straw for me was when they

47:31

put the live nothing to lose on

47:33

the first kiss record. I said,

47:35

that's just that's not a mistake. That's just pure.

47:38

Wow. Elect and stupidity, you know, it's like,

47:40

how do you splice in a live version

47:42

of nothing to lose from alive onto

47:45

an EQ and LP EQ of

47:47

the first kiss album? Have that

47:49

run, have that manufactured and out

47:51

there in the marketplace? You

47:53

know, it was just totally bewildering. It

47:57

was so obvious to me that

47:59

somebody Who was in charge

48:01

of the backlist that polygram just

48:03

did not give a bleep. Okay,

48:05

right, right, you know so

48:08

fortunately Jean asked me

48:11

for my phone number directly and Then

48:13

we kept in touch and he would ask

48:15

me things call me up about certain things

48:17

he had in his collection Sometimes

48:20

he would ask me to go find

48:22

him certain records and things and you

48:24

know slowly built a nice report together

48:26

And then one day I got a phone call

48:28

from fellow you guys may know named Tommy fair

48:31

And he said listen, we're doing these unplugged conventions

48:33

and you're living on the West Coast right now

48:36

Would you mind helping me put together a few

48:38

of the shows? So I said yeah, I can

48:40

assist you so at the LA show

48:43

Was the first time that the remasters

48:45

were announced and Jean had mentioned my

48:47

name without telling me in front of

48:49

that whole unplugged audience Oh, wow.

48:52

Oh, can you imagine like get out right? We

48:55

have this guy who's gonna you know fix the

48:57

catalog Robert Conti and I'm like, oh my god

48:59

I wasn't prepared for that right right, but still

49:01

one of the best days of my life, you

49:03

know, and Next

49:06

thing I know You know,

49:08

they decided to put the makeup back on the

49:10

original group back that got back together Hey,

49:12

we need you to move back to New York.

49:14

Hey, how much okay? How long do I have

49:17

two weeks two weeks? But

49:19

I did it Back

49:23

up and moved my entire, you know Living

49:26

stuff moved back to New York and you know

49:28

within a week and a half after that I

49:30

was working a polygon Unbeliev.

49:32

So so so did you have? Did

49:35

you have a template in mind did the band and

49:38

Paul Grant? So when you put the notes because that

49:40

that's one of the that's one of the great things

49:42

of all those remasters It has all

49:44

the original packaging, but then when you open up

49:46

the jewel case, you know behind the CD is

49:48

Robert V Conti's notes. Did you have a template

49:50

from the band or from anybody? I don't know

49:53

how you wanted to handle it Or did you

49:55

just say I'm a fan. I'm gonna write about

49:57

this each particular album. Well, you know, I'm

49:59

so happy I'm happy to ask that question because when

50:02

I originally pitched the remasters, they

50:05

were going to be digipacks. If you know what it is, you

50:07

know. No, yeah, I don't like those. I don't like those. Okay.

50:10

Then I'm not telling you anymore. I'm kidding. No,

50:12

I'm kidding. No, I'm just joking. Go

50:14

ahead. So anyway,

50:16

we had the original

50:18

idea was to put a live and live

50:20

two together. Oh, wow. As

50:23

a megabox said. Okay. And

50:25

then they decided, oh, you know what? We're

50:27

going to do the whole remaster, three a

50:29

month until they're all out. So

50:32

the original idea was to do digipacks

50:34

where there was going to be a

50:36

tray. You'd pull out the tray. There'd

50:38

be an expanded booklet with like up

50:40

to 16 pages of photos

50:43

and notes and everything. Okay, that would have

50:45

been cool. Close from people. Yeah,

50:47

close from people that worked with the band at the time

50:49

or were involved. But when we

50:51

put the initial budget together, the

50:54

big bean counter said, oh, no, no, no. This

50:56

is backlist. You're treating this as if it's a

50:58

new release. I'm like, well, it's

51:00

not the first time. There's other bands that

51:02

are doing this too and it's working out

51:05

great. The ACDC remasters look terrific, right? You

51:07

know, so anyway,

51:09

you have to pick your battle

51:11

sometimes. So they became, you

51:13

know, they were going to be re-released, but

51:16

they were going to be released in a,

51:18

you know, affordable format. So

51:20

what happened was I said, oh, you know, they

51:22

told me, all right, you got one page to

51:24

write your line of notes for each album. At

51:27

the time, I had no idea they were going to put it in

51:29

the back tray, but I'm saying to

51:31

myself, okay, what's the best method

51:33

how to write this? You know, there

51:35

are other KISS writers out there who

51:37

are very intricate in their style. And,

51:40

you know, I give them credit and I love reading

51:42

their work. But I said, you know what? I have

51:44

X X amount of words in a very small space.

51:47

What am I going to do with this? And I

51:49

said, you know what? I have to write these

51:51

essays as if you're picking up a KISS record for

51:53

the first time, no matter what it

51:55

is. Okay. And let me tell you

51:58

something that worked out in the long haul because to this.

52:00

This day, kids that weren't born

52:02

when those came out, reach

52:04

me today and say, man, I learned

52:06

all about kids through those essays and

52:08

everything. And- It's true,

52:10

yeah. Oh, and I'm so touched by that

52:13

because- Yeah, you should be. Yeah. It's

52:15

like kids, people that were not born, that

52:20

still buy physical media, will

52:22

read this stuff and then try to find

52:25

me on LinkedIn or Facebook, whatever. And I'm

52:27

just so touched by this stuff. And I'm

52:29

saying, wow, when those three messages came out,

52:33

for the most part, it was a positive feedback, but

52:35

I had some diehard kiss fans. They were so angry

52:37

at me. Why did you get into this? Why didn't

52:39

you get into that? Oh, I only had- Oh, a

52:41

good lock. I only had a few hundred words. Yeah,

52:43

I only had a few hundred words, guys. So

52:46

I could get into the whole, anyway. But

52:49

yeah, I will never forget this as

52:51

long as I live. I

52:55

had a friend who passed away last

52:58

year, her name was Jeanette Monroe. And

53:01

she was a manager at Virgin

53:03

Mega Store in Times Square. And

53:07

as the Kiss remasters would come out, that

53:10

Monday night, because they were, I think

53:12

they were 24 hours, and they were open until like 2

53:15

a.m. back then, she'd be like, come on down, see your

53:17

stuff. And I'd come down and

53:19

every week, every month, it wasn't, no, every month,

53:22

she'd have like, I told her,

53:24

put a few away from me, and she'd always, was so

53:27

sweet with that. And I got

53:29

to see that stuff like right away. And it

53:31

was the CDs and the cassettes, cassettes

53:34

turned out great too. And

53:37

I'm very blessed I've been given that opportunity.

53:40

Yeah. Now, was there a conscious effort,

53:42

I mean, to

53:44

stop where they did? Because

53:49

the big thing for me is, I'm

53:51

Tom and I bought- Hot in the shade. I'm

53:55

not a musician, but I mentioned this on the

53:58

show. The only reason I know is- When

54:00

we do episodes and we'll do top 10

54:02

this and then i'll put in the song

54:04

so i'll take the song and i'll put

54:06

into the audacity software and

54:08

i'll see the wavelength. From

54:11

all the other ones which i

54:13

downloaded to my computer are your

54:15

remastered cds that i've had that

54:18

i've downloaded. Wow and

54:20

then then there's hot in

54:22

the shade songs. Oh

54:26

yes oh yes and you know

54:28

the irony what that is the cassette sounds

54:31

louder than the cd. Yes yes

54:33

yes i had that yeah why

54:35

didn't they go further like

54:37

why did they stop the original

54:39

plan we were we were doing them

54:41

in lots of three or four if

54:44

i remember correctly and the last one

54:46

that we did was crazy night that came

54:48

out. But sales at

54:50

that point or just plummeting i mean

54:52

no one was interested in i'll make

54:54

a kiss at that point you know

54:56

those those newer albums warrant. You

54:59

know they weren't particularly drivers to oh yeah

55:01

we go on but rebuy these things are

55:03

you know not even 10 years old yet

55:05

you know that kind of thing now just

55:07

so you know we had

55:10

we did have planned to go all

55:12

the up to revenge. You

55:14

know extended revenge with

55:16

extended notes and everything hot

55:19

in the shade was the one i

55:21

wanted to remaster the most because i

55:23

don't know if you guys remember the

55:26

power mix cd that came out before

55:28

the album for rise to it. No

55:31

there was there was a power mix promo

55:34

rise to it dave thorner mix

55:37

and it came out and and you know at

55:39

the time there was a

55:41

record store downtown manhattan called jane our music

55:43

world and someone i knew there would always

55:46

put stuff aside for me. So she gave

55:48

me this he goes oh hey here's the

55:50

taste of new record this is back in

55:52

89 or 88 yeah and

55:55

the Power Mix for Rise To It is incredible.

55:57

Somebody has it on youtube if you guys want

55:59

to listen. Into it And but I'm. I

56:02

thought that was gonna be the general sound

56:04

of the entire record. And.

56:06

You gotta remember something. Also, Have.

56:08

The Shade was the first Kiss almost

56:11

hit a full our music apply know

56:13

this month songs out yet because most

56:15

most as most to sounds were only

56:17

a half hour. thirty five minutes, forty

56:19

minutes, With. The exception of the

56:22

double arms sell their laments is a

56:24

patient in that way. But.

56:26

I have to say when I put

56:28

the Cd it is a night I

56:30

bought it I was crushed by. So

56:33

that's how does this Hard Rock thousand

56:35

song on this on the promo see

56:37

the sounds so mutated and and must

56:39

stop. At just never made sense

56:41

to me the I visited and it but

56:43

yes it is set sounds. Louder.

56:46

Yeah. The L T sounds louder. And.

56:49

You know, But C D was the thing everybody

56:51

was pissing at the time. Some. Like

56:53

you know, that to me was an epic fail

56:55

and Billy Mays. Kids

56:57

Man has been heard about it. It's now

56:59

it's it's It's funny because I'll tell you

57:01

is after after all these years of some

57:04

I'm so that you were taught to you

57:06

in I'm so glad Zeus as that specific

57:08

question because after all these years of my.

57:11

Why did they stop? was it was it was at

57:13

a record lit like it's It's so funny because back

57:15

then. You're not thinking about the

57:17

financial aspect of it, you just think

57:19

of something must have happened to meet

57:21

some stops and to find out. That

57:23

after all these years the only reason they stop

57:26

was risk as they were selling it's it's kind

57:28

of a bummer. I was there was like a

57:30

bigger story behind it. You know I I do

57:32

notice is just as an interesting. You

57:35

know it's really followed. The. Kiss concerts.

57:38

Are. obviously they sell out the do very

57:40

well that's good old people you could travel

57:43

of the country see friends from the all

57:45

across the country artist album sales are different

57:47

animals like it's so funny how they adjust

57:49

your they sell very well the first one

57:51

or two weeks and then after that the

57:53

canada's fall down all the all the kiss

57:56

fans come out by the know and then

57:58

they're gone and no one else I'd

58:00

say it's right, right. And the thing was

58:02

at the record company at the time, there

58:04

were people there that just hated KISS. They

58:06

hated them. I mean, it was like,

58:08

I was like, you know, oh, why are we doing

58:11

this for them? Why are we doing this? Why are

58:13

we doing that? And it was like, you

58:15

always, I always had this feeling it was always

58:17

an uphill battle. You know, like

58:19

for instance, when you wanted the best came

58:21

out, you know, everybody in

58:24

the office is spotting, expecting, oh, at

58:26

least platinum, hopefully double platinum. Okay, well,

58:28

it went gold. First KISS, I'm gonna

58:30

want gold in a while. That's

58:33

not good enough. No, geez. No,

58:35

geez. Okay. Yeah.

58:40

But you know, but you

58:42

know, it was a constant

58:44

having to constantly prove that

58:46

KISS was so important. And one day somebody in

58:49

the record company just said, you know what, I

58:51

don't care if they sell out millions of tickets,

58:53

if they're not selling that in records, why

58:55

are we investing in this? And to

58:58

me, I always felt KISS got Roy under the

59:00

stick. Have a label

59:02

that really, really loves you, cares

59:04

about you, wants you to succeed.

59:06

Not one that feels like they're

59:09

doing you a favor. It was

59:11

so, yeah, it was

59:13

very frustrating at times. Yeah. Yeah,

59:16

no, the whole, you brought in, came

59:19

up with the, you wanted the best. What

59:21

was your theory on that album? Because it's

59:24

kind of a polarizing live album

59:26

for a lot of KISS fans,

59:29

because it's almost like a greatest

59:31

hits live edition

59:34

of KISS. Yeah. And

59:36

some of the songs like, wait a minute, was

59:39

this really never heard before? Or is

59:41

this off of a live too? Wait

59:43

a minute. Didn't we hear this off

59:45

of this? Tell us a

59:47

little bit about what you think, you know, the whole, I

59:51

don't know, the reputation of that

59:53

specific album. Well, here's

59:56

the thing, you know, there's so much to talk

59:58

about it, But let me try to. The

1:00:00

put it in a nutshell, best I can. You.

1:00:02

Wanted the best you got. The Best

1:00:05

was originally envisioned to be. Kind

1:00:07

of like a bootleg com like what they

1:00:09

do now at the Lie on the Sambora

1:00:12

was a office. Ah boards yeah yeah I

1:00:14

took him twenty five years but has and

1:00:16

it was asked with about. All right So

1:00:18

the original vision of you are the Best

1:00:21

It was supposed to be. For.

1:00:23

The fans. Ya. The real

1:00:25

Die Hard said just wanted something

1:00:27

to kind of commemorate. Being.

1:00:29

A loyal in support of Kiss

1:00:31

Man all those years rights now

1:00:33

if you were collecting final at

1:00:35

the time. The. Mid Nineties

1:00:37

is so I'm you know,

1:00:40

Mercury Polygram or not. Putting.

1:00:43

Out the newer releases on vinyl

1:00:45

any more. They were licensing those

1:00:47

records to a company called A

1:00:49

Teenage. I don't have to remember

1:00:51

them. They said i'll. Okay,

1:00:54

so H Needs Global Distribution was

1:00:56

a company that you're basically licensed

1:00:58

rights to take. Classic.

1:01:00

His records and put them out on

1:01:02

Vine. So on there was they did

1:01:05

so I think two or three versions

1:01:07

of the lives three. That. Were

1:01:09

numbered. They. Did a version of

1:01:11

bomb revenge, did the two or three verses

1:01:13

of revenge like Ray Vinyl and that's I'm

1:01:15

saying. They were all numbered and are creatures

1:01:18

Night They did a martyr the the day

1:01:20

I go in the darkest government a correctly

1:01:22

and standards you know. Like I said, it

1:01:25

all gets blurry after one year anyway. I'm.

1:01:28

So. Today we're.

1:01:31

Going. To be the licensee for

1:01:33

this album Originally. It. Was

1:01:35

supposed to be a Cis army

1:01:37

depot. Pay die hard. Just fans.

1:01:39

You've been loyal all these years.

1:01:42

Here. Is a special album just for

1:01:44

you and was supposed to be. You.

1:01:46

Know deep cuts, You. Know

1:01:48

to timer ladies of waiting all the

1:01:51

stuff that I yell found in the

1:01:53

balls from various audio shows ever recorded.

1:01:55

As opposed to be a big thank you to them.

1:01:58

When. Time. Tiger Stadium sold out in

1:02:00

45 minutes. All

1:02:02

of a sudden, there were 20

1:02:05

chefs in the kitchen at the company. 20

1:02:07

different chefs that have their own version of Vichy

1:02:10

Slaw. Well Vichy Slaw, if

1:02:12

it's not made properly, doesn't taste very

1:02:14

good, right? So when you've got

1:02:16

20 different people, and those who don't know what

1:02:18

Vichy Slaw is, it's called potato soup. Anyway,

1:02:24

so all of a sudden you have all these people say,

1:02:26

hey, they sold out. They sold out. That's

1:02:28

great. Wait a minute. This

1:02:31

little limited edition record this guy

1:02:34

wants to do? Oh no, we got to think

1:02:36

bigger. We got to put out a Best of

1:02:38

Alive one and a Live two. And

1:02:41

I'm like, oh boy, this is not going to work. And

1:02:44

what was worse was they took

1:02:46

all the raw recordings that we

1:02:48

found, and there's no

1:02:50

secret that the four tracks that they

1:02:52

picked of all those songs were

1:02:55

remixed at the very least, room

1:02:58

service. Room service you hear

1:03:00

on that album is not the

1:03:02

room service that I found and

1:03:05

submitted. So I

1:03:07

don't think there's very many people including Zeus and I that think that those

1:03:14

are from 1975. Those

1:03:18

are not 1975 live recordings. You can just

1:03:20

tell if you're a kiss fan, you can

1:03:22

hear Paul's voice. Those are not

1:03:24

40, 30 year old recordings. Let

1:03:26

me put it this way. So I

1:03:29

came up with a bunch of cover concepts

1:03:31

and the one that they built

1:03:34

upon. I had taken some of the

1:03:36

Dunrush trading card art. I

1:03:38

used that as an idea for the front

1:03:40

cover. And a guy named Lou

1:03:43

Ransom, I think his name was, he

1:03:45

embellished that and made a terrific looking

1:03:47

cover. At the time, I've grown to

1:03:49

appreciate it because when it was

1:03:52

first displayed in the office, I'm

1:03:55

like, Kiss is about warrants, hot,

1:03:57

heavy, metal, not this person. oh

1:03:59

I thought of i am soft

1:04:01

our what are you doing and

1:04:03

I'll feel better way I've grown

1:04:05

to appreciate it but do about

1:04:07

them. Again, the and it's

1:04:09

all about. Your. Child's your

1:04:11

own opinion but you know he referred

1:04:14

by a dog. but when they gave

1:04:16

me the advance to set. And.

1:04:18

I went home. I listen to it.

1:04:20

I'm like I can't believe how. I.

1:04:23

See, it was such a night

1:04:25

and day difference between. What?

1:04:28

I had pitched. Which. Was

1:04:30

around this time there was a Cd

1:04:32

said called the Beatles Anthology of the

1:04:35

Government yeah bar memory and if you

1:04:37

remember in between each of the songs

1:04:39

they would take audio snippets of you

1:04:41

know, Lennon and Mccartney and and they

1:04:44

would talk about yell either to general

1:04:46

staff are some of the a why

1:04:48

they wrote the song the where they

1:04:50

did and yeah that's the way you

1:04:53

want The Best was originally envisioned. And.

1:04:56

To. See what it originally was

1:04:58

supposed to be to what is

1:05:01

ultimately became. You. Know I.

1:05:03

I personally feel the kids man's got

1:05:05

gypped because you didn't get to hear.

1:05:08

What We sounds and get his

1:05:10

day. It. Blows my mind that

1:05:13

they still haven't put that stuff out.

1:05:15

That. That that dat on dat tape

1:05:18

that we made it is out there

1:05:20

somewhere in the vault. Why? You know

1:05:22

when when the album it's we five

1:05:24

years old. And an arm

1:05:26

and two thousand and twenty one. Why?

1:05:29

And they put out Hey! here's the

1:05:31

original version with the anniversary edition. I

1:05:33

have no idea how they think. I'll

1:05:37

just you know what that or Robert, how are they going

1:05:39

to say? Is. The bullshit version

1:05:41

we told you. Have

1:05:44

a real version from my G right? You're

1:05:46

right. We had been lying to you for

1:05:48

the past twenty years but ah yes I

1:05:50

get old are they were doing now I'm

1:05:52

he makes sense of and you know the

1:05:55

other thing was the mole and one of

1:05:57

the most painful things to me about that

1:05:59

whole prob. That was that the vinyl

1:06:01

version of that record was supposed

1:06:03

to come to the for that

1:06:05

poster and we went through every

1:06:08

sly that bigram as it's vaults

1:06:10

A we picked for images that

1:06:12

to this day remain on published

1:06:14

and we kind of a beautiful

1:06:16

ouster. Miles. And the fact adapters

1:06:18

there is still not in France. Still

1:06:20

not an affair with the fans. It

1:06:23

just yeah I scratch my head sometimes

1:06:25

as such as I get bombarded by

1:06:27

a million to sands now say I

1:06:29

can get a copy that only thirty

1:06:31

about. Yeah,

1:06:33

you know I'll say something. I didn't My

1:06:35

what I'm a press I keep my word.

1:06:38

You know I may have Mom as yeah

1:06:40

I. I am one of three people on

1:06:42

the entire planet that still have the original,

1:06:44

that type of what that record was supposed

1:06:46

to sound like and the designs laws. And.

1:06:49

And now are. To.

1:06:52

This day I've kept my word. Is

1:06:54

Not the bootleg circuit. It will never

1:06:56

comes from A bootleg. Circuits were made.

1:06:58

Yeah, I'm. Ah, I'm surprised

1:07:00

Universal hasn't jumped on the opportunity

1:07:03

to put that out because I'm

1:07:05

going to be quite slant. Yeah

1:07:07

that. Album The Way it

1:07:09

was. You know the way was put together.

1:07:12

spare bits on that the people still haven't

1:07:14

heard to this day. And

1:07:16

on top of it, It's.

1:07:18

A beautiful package. Will settle

1:07:20

with This law is sam boards dust

1:07:22

when something out. I'm seeing myself. Okay,

1:07:25

some of it's really good in there was a

1:07:27

couple choices on my what that bleep with a

1:07:29

state spoiler. You know and an

1:07:31

arm but again he out each and to

1:07:33

spain has their own opinion of was great

1:07:35

and what's not so great. And.

1:07:37

You know you hope that. Whatever.

1:07:40

The averages you know is is that

1:07:42

it is the majority view. Who knows.

1:07:44

Yeah, I will keep your arms. Hire

1:07:46

some extra security now. Dot.

1:07:50

Com he doesn't know where you

1:07:52

are buses up a lot of

1:07:54

because fortunately farted. Yeah, fortunately it's

1:07:56

not. It's not anywhere near where

1:07:58

I live in. You hear that?

1:08:00

You hear that, KISS fans? You hear

1:08:02

that? Stay away from Robert. Leave him

1:08:05

alone. It's in a nice

1:08:07

metal box in a very, you know,

1:08:09

a long, long comic. The

1:08:12

gals are far, far away. Yeah, there you go. Robert,

1:08:15

it's in the KISS, the Gene Simmons

1:08:17

vault. Some lucky fans got it. Robert,

1:08:21

what's your relationship, where

1:08:23

does your relationship stand now with the band,

1:08:27

the relationship that you had with Paulie Graham

1:08:29

or with all that, how did that transition, like,

1:08:32

did it, are you still involved with them in

1:08:34

any way, shape, or form, and if so, how

1:08:36

was that today? No, no, listen,

1:08:38

you know, I did my job, you know,

1:08:40

I did my job, and it was over.

1:08:42

You can only remaster things once every couple

1:08:45

of years, right? You

1:08:47

know, so, you know, basically, after

1:08:49

that stuff was over, you know,

1:08:52

I did get some freelance KISS projects to

1:08:54

do. Some I was credited

1:08:56

for, some I wasn't. But,

1:08:59

you know, I got to contribute bits and

1:09:01

pieces along the way. And, you know, after

1:09:03

that, I moved on to other things, you

1:09:05

know, just comes in time. You know,

1:09:08

listen, I love to have worked for, you

1:09:10

know, the KISS company forever, of course, but,

1:09:12

you know, you don't get that opportunity much.

1:09:16

You know, I was, to be frank, I

1:09:18

was disappointed with the 2014 vinyl

1:09:20

re-releases for a multi-user. I was just going

1:09:22

to ask you about that. Yeah, go ahead.

1:09:24

Yeah, I mean, you know, there was just

1:09:26

things that should have been done that weren't,

1:09:28

credits that should have, the thing that upsets

1:09:30

me the most is that,

1:09:33

Bill O'Coin's name being removed from all

1:09:35

the early records. It's like, you know,

1:09:37

I totally get why, you know, Mickey

1:09:39

Entertainment belongs on the newer editions. But

1:09:41

you do what you do, you know,

1:09:43

like with the Rolling Stones remasters or

1:09:45

the Bob Marley remasters. You put who

1:09:48

are the original credits, you know, the original

1:09:50

people that were involved. And

1:09:52

then you put the newer staff or the

1:09:54

newer contributors. What's so hard about

1:09:57

that? You know, it's like it's

1:09:59

sad because... You know whether it

1:10:01

was done maliciously or with intent or by accident

1:10:03

or whatever the bottom line is We now have

1:10:05

a generation of kiss fans who don't know who

1:10:07

the hell bill coin is and that to me

1:10:09

is a crime Totally agree. Yeah,

1:10:11

you know we agree and You

1:10:14

know, it's sad because you know the younger

1:10:16

kiss fans You know

1:10:18

if they bought rock and roll over on vinyl,

1:10:20

you know, the 2014 release or later on I

1:10:24

Don't think both coins name is mentioned at all. No,

1:10:26

that's a tragedy. That's wrong. You know, yeah, yeah,

1:10:28

and No, I mean look one

1:10:32

thing I had to learn the hard way like,

1:10:34

you know There are mistakes in the remasters

1:10:36

that that infuriated me But be

1:10:39

it by you know being a polygram taught

1:10:41

me a reason taught me why that stuff

1:10:43

happens It's not because it necessarily is a

1:10:45

person who's trying to say who I'm gonna

1:10:47

ruin the kiss catalog No,

1:10:49

no, right, right You

1:10:52

have people that don't look at kiss

1:10:54

anything else than you know financial commodities

1:10:56

for them You don't have there are

1:10:58

people that are involved that

1:11:01

don't want to spend the extra three

1:11:03

cents a unit to do certain things,

1:11:05

right? Yeah, so, you know unfortunately

1:11:10

When you have so many people on the team trying

1:11:12

to get things done and You

1:11:15

know, I was a consultant. I wasn't the

1:11:17

final say so right? Oh, I could do

1:11:19

and say hey I think you should do it this way

1:11:22

and you know a good number of times they went

1:11:24

with my advice and sometimes they didn't and You

1:11:27

know, am I proud of

1:11:29

the remasters? Hell? Yeah, are they are they?

1:11:32

Far superior than the additions before them.

1:11:34

Hell, yeah You know if

1:11:37

you want to listen to the original harden Helen

1:11:39

CD. Good luck You're

1:11:44

right We

1:11:46

want to kind of get to know you a

1:11:48

little bit better. So let's get to some fun

1:11:50

questions We asked most our guests. Do you have

1:11:52

a you have a favorite kiss member? Oh Gosh,

1:11:55

you know, ha ha ha it's

1:11:58

varied all over over the

1:12:00

years. I'm going to say

1:12:02

because Gene had faith in me and gave me

1:12:04

a chance. I'm going to say Gene. Okay. I

1:12:07

like hearing the story that Gene walked

1:12:09

up to you and was like, aren't

1:12:11

you the one with like the bootleg

1:12:13

kiss card? So can you tell us

1:12:15

that story real quick? Sure.

1:12:18

When I gave him to him at the Ritz, he

1:12:21

looked at Paul and said what an original idea and

1:12:23

then he went on to say, you know, this is

1:12:25

a bootleg and if

1:12:28

it's worth us coming after you, I said, well, I'm

1:12:30

not the publisher. I'm just the writer. I

1:12:34

can picture Gene. This isn't

1:12:36

authorized. Exactly. That's exactly what

1:12:38

he said. You didn't ask for permission. Oh

1:12:41

my gosh. I'm just expressing permission

1:12:43

from the NFL network. I'm just

1:12:46

expressing, right. I didn't, I remember

1:12:48

telling him, is that just expressing my love for the

1:12:51

band? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

1:12:54

That's funny. Now, how about a

1:12:56

favorite kiss song? Oh

1:12:59

my gosh. It's 260. Come on.

1:13:01

This is the easiest thing, right? I'm going to tell

1:13:03

you something. I'm going to tell you something. And this

1:13:05

is the God's honest truth. Ever since

1:13:07

I got a copy of Kiss Alive, I have

1:13:10

listened to Deuce at least once

1:13:12

a day for over 40 years.

1:13:16

Love it. Different versions of

1:13:18

Deuce, but I listen to Deuce

1:13:20

every morning. It's my wake up.

1:13:24

Yeah. Oh yeah. I love it.

1:13:27

So you're the reason why Deuce is on every freaking

1:13:30

500 compilations out there, right?

1:13:33

Rock and roll all night. Well

1:13:36

that and that. And it's one of the greatest songs

1:13:38

I've ever made. Yeah. I agree. I agree.

1:13:40

I'm joking with that. But I know. I know. We

1:13:42

had this conversation. I think, what was it last week

1:13:44

or the week before? We're like, yeah, what is Kiss

1:13:46

going to do next? What's their stuff? And we're like,

1:13:48

well, there'll be more off the sound boards. And I'm

1:13:50

like, just

1:13:53

what I need. My 40th

1:13:55

version of Detroit Rock City on my phone.

1:13:58

Like, you know, and. It's

1:14:00

not like they did errors like any

1:14:02

era of their touring career where you're

1:14:04

like, oh yeah, remember this? They did

1:14:06

about 20 deep cuts

1:14:08

on this tour. It's the same

1:14:10

15 kind of songs

1:14:12

and then four or five sprinkled

1:14:14

in every couple years. Yeah.

1:14:18

You know, I mean, I got to

1:14:20

tell you, the Des Moines release to

1:14:22

me was a great exception. Oh God,

1:14:24

I love that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I

1:14:26

was like, oh wow, this is great.

1:14:29

I stole your love. All that stuff

1:14:31

live that most of it they stopped

1:14:33

doing and most of it back. I

1:14:37

mean, in today's popular culture, songs like

1:14:39

Christine 16 and Goin' Blind, I don't

1:14:41

think you could be here. But

1:14:46

I think that's also why it was exciting

1:14:48

and Zeus and I talked about this before.

1:14:50

I think that's why fans were so excited

1:14:52

about the Off the Samba for the Animalize

1:14:54

tour because it's like an era that we

1:14:56

don't hear a lot. The

1:14:58

songs are crazy fast. The songs that

1:15:00

you don't hear live. Mark St. John,

1:15:03

which is like a rarity in and

1:15:05

of itself, right? Only two concerts. So

1:15:07

we got that. So to me,

1:15:09

that's a must have if you're a tennis man.

1:15:13

That I get. But do I

1:15:15

need the same set list with

1:15:17

the same guys for

1:15:20

the next five years? Like

1:15:22

imagine them trying to sell you on 2019 end

1:15:24

of the road CD. Oh

1:15:29

that's coming. And then in 2020 and then 2021 version and then

1:15:31

in 2022, 23. You're

1:15:36

like, it's the same songs. It's the last

1:15:38

four years. Get ready. It's coming.

1:15:41

It's frustrating. Yeah. I

1:15:43

mean, honestly, when I look at the band's

1:15:45

history overall, it's hard to digest that the

1:15:47

last new music, last new album is 12

1:15:49

years ago. Really?

1:15:53

You wish that. I wish. Yeah.

1:15:56

It's like, keep the music flowing. That's what's going

1:15:58

to keep this band alive. live, you

1:16:00

need new music. You know,

1:16:03

it's not, I mean,

1:16:05

look, I love the fact the Stones, you

1:16:07

know, put out a record, the who they

1:16:09

keep busy, you know, and they're, they're just

1:16:11

yeah, they're still making this still making new

1:16:13

songs. They mix them up.

1:16:18

Yeah, that's another home ad. Now I'm going

1:16:20

to go to another one. And not not

1:16:22

a live album and not a compilation. So

1:16:24

no double platen or live one or two

1:16:27

favorite kiss album. Hotter

1:16:29

than hell. Wow. Really?

1:16:32

One of the first ones has ever picked

1:16:35

that for us, right? You gotta see here's the

1:16:37

thing, guys. Yeah, yeah, here's I love that album.

1:16:40

Don't get me wrong. It's a top five album

1:16:42

for me. Yeah, I was blessed

1:16:44

to you know, you've heard the story about

1:16:46

how when we open up the master tape,

1:16:48

the flakes just flew all over the place.

1:16:51

Right. Right. So so you know, the when

1:16:53

we baked that tape and saved it, you

1:16:56

know, for one last transfer. I

1:16:59

got to hear that album multiple

1:17:01

times on the top quality, most

1:17:03

high tech equipment available at that

1:17:06

time. Yeah, so I have I

1:17:08

have memories in my head listening

1:17:10

to every ounce of

1:17:13

that heavy bass and that, you know,

1:17:15

that you know, it sounds tinny. But

1:17:17

you know, I'm also someone who loves

1:17:19

Metallica and St. Anger. Most people want

1:17:21

to cut my head off. Yeah, okay.

1:17:23

I love that record. To me, I'm

1:17:25

like, this is my Metallica, man. I

1:17:28

love that. I love that. That's awesome. That's

1:17:30

all. So yeah, hard in hell, I have to

1:17:33

say is one of those albums I can listen

1:17:35

from beginning to end that skip off over

1:17:37

any songs and enjoy my day.

1:17:40

So yeah, nice. Perfect. Now, how

1:17:42

many have you seen them in concert live a

1:17:44

bunch of times? Over 200. Oh,

1:17:46

shit. Over 200. Over

1:17:48

all the guests

1:17:51

we've had and we've had a lot. I think

1:17:53

that's the most anyone Oh, no, it's by five.

1:17:55

So anything close? Yeah, guys. Well,

1:17:58

remember something. Yeah, remember. One of

1:18:00

the reasons that number is so

1:18:02

high is because when I was

1:18:05

working with Mercury Polygram, I

1:18:07

was on the guest list all the time. So no

1:18:09

matter where I flew or where I was, hey,

1:18:12

I'm on the guest list. Oh, come on in.

1:18:15

That counts. That

1:18:18

counts. That added up

1:18:20

for the Alive Worldwide

1:18:22

Psycho Circus. I saw

1:18:24

a bunch of those shows. Do you have a

1:18:26

favorite tour then? What's your favorite

1:18:28

tour you saw? Oh, boy. OK. So

1:18:31

sedimentally, I'm going

1:18:34

to tell you, believe it or not, the Kiss Asylum show,

1:18:37

that was over

1:18:39

here on Long Island, because my friend

1:18:41

Pete got his front row seats. And

1:18:44

that was the first tour with

1:18:46

that huge illuminated multicolored Kiss. Yes.

1:18:50

My eyes were burning for like a

1:18:52

week. I could imagine. Yeah. And with

1:18:54

Gene Blue Fire, we felt it. We

1:18:56

felt it feel audio. We felt it

1:18:58

hit our faces. That's how

1:19:01

close we were. Yeah. And

1:19:03

to be that close at a

1:19:05

show, especially back then

1:19:07

as a teenager, was just like, oh,

1:19:10

my god, it doesn't get better than

1:19:12

this. But I would

1:19:14

have to say the Alive

1:19:17

Worldwide Four Nights at the Garden, because

1:19:20

that was Tiger Stadium. You know what?

1:19:22

Tiger Stadium is probably the best. That

1:19:24

was a religious experience. We had people

1:19:27

from all over the world come

1:19:29

in for that. Walking the floor

1:19:31

and recognizing so many faces and

1:19:34

people that I was pen pals with

1:19:36

the decade before, from Europe and everything,

1:19:38

getting to meet these people for the

1:19:41

first time in the flesh, that

1:19:44

was a night to remember as well. Fantastic.

1:19:47

Would you say that's your favorite memory of Kiss? The

1:19:51

MSG shows? The

1:19:53

Tiger Stadium. Oh, yeah. I would

1:19:55

say, yeah, Tiger Stadium 1, Kiss

1:19:57

Asylum number 2. Yeah,

1:20:00

yeah, I mean, I mean there've been shows I've enjoyed

1:20:02

more than others over the years, but yeah, those are

1:20:04

probably I'll go with the Tiger

1:20:07

Stadium. Yeah Robert before

1:20:09

we let you go. I want to

1:20:11

ask you something that's not His

1:20:14

related. Okay, sure it

1:20:16

and I'm gonna be I texted

1:20:19

Zeus last night I'm gonna indulge

1:20:21

myself a little bit because I have

1:20:23

you on so I have to bring this up. Oh Oh

1:20:26

So no, no, no, so so whatever we whatever we

1:20:29

have a guest on We always

1:20:31

like to research the guest and get a background on

1:20:33

what they're involved in and what they've done, etc Etc.

1:20:36

I came across your website With

1:20:39

some of the things that you're making

1:20:41

and manufacturing your pop culture things are

1:20:44

non-kiss When I was a

1:20:46

little kid One of

1:20:48

the things that I absolutely loved was

1:20:50

a vinyl book

1:20:52

and record Set about

1:20:55

Dracula Frankenstein and the werewolf. Yeah. Okay.

1:20:57

I used to listen to it all

1:20:59

the time It was a comic book

1:21:01

that you followed with the audio of

1:21:03

the vinyl What I went

1:21:05

on your website and realized that you

1:21:08

remastered this on

1:21:10

vinyl and that you are

1:21:12

the executive producer of it I

1:21:14

swear to God my head almost split in half

1:21:17

and I cannot but I I had to

1:21:20

get it because it is What other than

1:21:22

kiss things like this are so

1:21:25

childhood nostalgia for me and What

1:21:28

when I when we were having you on I said

1:21:30

I have to at least bring this up and just

1:21:32

tell him how thrilled I am That that you were

1:21:35

even involved in this that other people even know about

1:21:37

this. I just thought I was stunning well, listen, you

1:21:39

know, we That

1:21:41

record has lost sentimental value to me because yeah, I was

1:21:44

a kid in the 70s When

1:21:46

Halloween season came around there was probably

1:21:48

about four or five different Halloween records

1:21:50

Yep, and that particular Halloween record was

1:21:53

my was my favorite of all time

1:21:56

Yeah, even though I had not known

1:21:58

who drew it at the time that

1:22:00

artwork is by a person named Neil Adams,

1:22:03

who wound up becoming very

1:22:05

famous for his work on Batman

1:22:07

and Green Lantern and Green Arrow.

1:22:09

And he's considered an iconic figure

1:22:11

in the comic book community. I

1:22:14

was very blessed to have interviewed him over the

1:22:16

years and got to work with him on a

1:22:18

few things. And believe it or

1:22:20

not, he was the cover artist. Marvel

1:22:22

was going to do a Kiss No. 3. And if

1:22:25

you ever saw the pencil draft

1:22:28

cover, Neil drew that. So

1:22:31

when he passed away a couple of

1:22:33

years ago, going on a couple of years ago,

1:22:35

I reached out to his family and I

1:22:38

said, listen, this record has special childhood meaning

1:22:40

for me. Would you allow me to reissue

1:22:43

the comic book? And I went

1:22:45

to Peter Penn

1:22:47

Records. I said, I need permission

1:22:49

to put this out. So we

1:22:51

all came to a great agreement.

1:22:53

And we did a Vampire Blood

1:22:55

red vinyl with a 48 page

1:22:57

graphic novel. The original only had

1:22:59

16 pages, so there's an

1:23:02

additional 32 pages in there. And

1:23:04

it wound up being, you know, it's a

1:23:06

heartfelt project and I'm very blessed that it

1:23:08

happened. And thank you so much. I'm so

1:23:10

happy to hear it. It

1:23:12

was just it's just one of those things, like I'm sure

1:23:14

other people listening, you know, or had

1:23:17

these things from their childhood that are, you

1:23:19

know, that that aren't Star Wars, that aren't Kiss,

1:23:22

that were kind of special to them. And then

1:23:24

when you when you become an adult and you

1:23:26

you find out that somebody else knows about this,

1:23:29

to me, it just kind of really like touched like

1:23:31

that real nostalgic nerve with me. And I just was

1:23:33

thrilled to have you on just to just to spend

1:23:36

a couple seconds just talking about I thought it was

1:23:38

very cool. Well, thanks, man.

1:23:40

I appreciate that. And actually, that's going

1:23:42

to be the first of several. We've

1:23:44

got several. Oh, yeah. We got several

1:23:46

classic records in the pipeline. And

1:23:49

we'll be making some announcements over

1:23:51

the summer. So thank you so

1:23:53

much for your support. And those

1:23:55

who are interested can go to

1:23:57

Studio chikara.com and you'll see what's coming.

1:24:00

I'm very

1:24:02

excited to be working on things I

1:24:04

just loved as a child. What

1:24:06

I've worked on these days is on studiochakara.com. In

1:24:24

addition to House of Tara, I also

1:24:26

served as a consultant on an all-new

1:24:28

children's record called Color Us With Music,

1:24:30

which is the artist's name

1:24:33

is Brian Washington, and he's

1:24:35

just phenomenal. The kids' records from

1:24:37

when we were growing up in the late 60s, early to

1:24:39

mid-70s, those Disney-style,

1:24:42

Peter Pan-style records, he created

1:24:45

an all-new album with those

1:24:47

records as

1:24:50

the main influence, and it just turned out terrific. I

1:24:52

was happy to be part of that. Also

1:24:55

working on the Kiss memoir, My

1:24:57

Time at the Band. I

1:24:59

really wanted to get it out as

1:25:01

soon as possible, but every time I

1:25:04

opened the box or reviewed things or

1:25:06

met with old friends that were working

1:25:08

at the record company at the time,

1:25:10

the reminiscing is just incredible, and the

1:25:12

amount of material is out

1:25:14

of this world. Cutting stuff out

1:25:17

is going to be the hardest part of that process. I'm

1:25:21

blessed for that. When it's

1:25:24

out, you'll come back and we'll talk

1:25:26

about the book, right? Oh, absolutely. Oh,

1:25:28

absolutely. Absolutely. We should start

1:25:30

a petition with Universal. Put out the original,

1:25:32

you want it the best. Hey, we'll do

1:25:35

it. We'll get

1:25:37

it. Hey, one last thing I want to

1:25:39

bring up to your attention, and it's kind

1:25:41

of funny, okay? So this is

1:25:43

our sixth season, fifth

1:25:45

year. Congrats.

1:25:47

We're having you on. We're having you on.

1:25:49

There's a reason why I'm saying that. Out

1:25:53

of nowhere, we already talked, we were

1:25:55

talking back and forth and behind the scenes, we've been

1:25:57

talking for a while, and we have you

1:25:59

on this week. Okay, April

1:26:02

20th, we get an

1:26:04

email from one of our long time listeners.

1:26:07

Hey guys, I just want to bring this up to you guys.

1:26:10

I have a suggestion for you. Go

1:26:12

get Robert Conte. Really?

1:26:18

Now that the new repress and the box sets are like perfect

1:26:20

time to have him on the show. This

1:26:23

guy's amazing. You've got to

1:26:25

get him on. Wow, wow,

1:26:27

well. Thank you, but we

1:26:29

were already working on it, so it wasn't your

1:26:32

part. The

1:26:34

timing was amazing that we got that email and

1:26:36

we had you scheduled to come on this week.

1:26:38

Oh, that's terrific. Listen, the Kiss

1:26:41

fans, I got to tell you, every

1:26:44

time I hear from Kiss fans from all over the world,

1:26:48

it's just been such a blessing to be

1:26:50

able to interact with people that actually remember

1:26:53

the remasters, have the remasters, read

1:26:56

the magazines, the metal edges

1:26:58

that I contributed to and stuff like that. It's

1:27:01

really overwhelming. The

1:27:03

last couple of shows at Master

1:27:05

Square Garden, I couldn't see

1:27:07

half the people I was supposed to because

1:27:09

as I'm walking throughout Manhattan, people are

1:27:12

stopping me everywhere. Are

1:27:14

you Robert Conte? Awesome.

1:27:17

There's probably 500 photographs

1:27:19

out there of me with different Kiss

1:27:21

fans that I met. I

1:27:24

met in just those two

1:27:26

or three days that will

1:27:28

last a lifetime because I

1:27:30

didn't realize that the contributions

1:27:33

are so cared about by people.

1:27:36

That really touched me. Thank

1:27:38

you all. Thank you everyone. I really appreciate

1:27:40

it. Awesome. He is Robert V. Conte.

1:27:42

This has been an amazing conversation, one that we've

1:27:45

wanted to have for quite some time. Robert, we're

1:27:47

thrilled that you gave us this much time. Great

1:27:49

stories. Thank you so much for joining us. When

1:27:51

that book is done, you will come back and

1:27:54

we will talk about it, buddy. Thank you. Sounds

1:27:56

great, guys. Thank you so much again

1:27:58

for the invite. Looking

1:28:00

forward to your future projects as well. Thank

1:28:02

you. We appreciate it. All right. Good night

1:28:04

guys Tom

1:28:07

that was robert v. Conte. What do you think? Great

1:28:10

stuff, you know, like I said at the beginning of the

1:28:12

episode I love when we kind of get into the weeds

1:28:15

with the real kiss stuff and

1:28:17

even hearing his story about how he got started

1:28:19

and how he went from a fan to kind

1:28:22

of Keeping track of all the

1:28:24

minutia of the of the things and then presented

1:28:26

to the band all of a sudden He becomes

1:28:28

a catalog consultant and Everybody

1:28:31

who bought those remaster CDs in the 90s

1:28:34

I remember the first thing I did for everyone is

1:28:36

lift up that CD and read those notes because I

1:28:38

wanted to see what kind of Little details and stories

1:28:41

he was going to tell about each particular album Uh,

1:28:43

so it was great and I especially loved

1:28:46

finally getting an answer On

1:28:48

why they stopped at crazy nights with

1:28:50

the remasters no smashes. Yeah, right. Yep

1:28:52

But everybody that sees the title to

1:28:54

this episode I promise you if

1:28:57

you listen to a kiss podcast There's

1:28:59

at least some part of you that's been robert conte.

1:29:01

Why do I know that? Exactly

1:29:03

and you'll see and it's

1:29:05

because of his involvement with

1:29:08

the remasters and

1:29:10

his knowledge of the kiss products

1:29:13

and he is Really really

1:29:15

involved and he's got a bunch of

1:29:18

other projects which tom was able to

1:29:20

geek out about Yeah, and ask him

1:29:22

about in pop culture.

1:29:24

He's really become an expert out there

1:29:27

This kind of stuff and what I liked about

1:29:29

it the most in this interview tom He

1:29:32

didn't hold back. No, he

1:29:35

told us literally like yeah, I

1:29:37

told them they should do this or yeah

1:29:40

I mean that's his baby. You wanted

1:29:42

the best you got the best and

1:29:44

he fucking destroyed it for real And

1:29:47

how about yeah, and he told us the

1:29:49

secrets behind it and what's really out there

1:29:52

And how how does that not get

1:29:54

your blood going when he's like you

1:29:57

you should have heard what it was or

1:29:59

that? Poster that they had

1:30:01

that no one's seen all

1:30:03

the shit Fascinating fucking stuff and

1:30:05

how he's one of three people I think

1:30:08

he said that actually has the Dat

1:30:10

recording of the way that the things were

1:30:13

supposed to be released and some of the

1:30:15

things that they've done the kiss tards Yeah,

1:30:17

exactly just incredible incredible But

1:30:21

I love having one of these like little geek out

1:30:23

sessions with another super kiss fan. It's it's fun Guys,

1:30:27

he was super friendly super

1:30:29

kind Great guy and

1:30:31

we loved having him on and who knows

1:30:33

what comes down the hikedown later on We

1:30:35

might have him back to have some more

1:30:37

further discussion But he knows his kiss stuff

1:30:40

and he was a fascinating guest and we

1:30:42

hope you liked it. Yep. Absolutely

1:30:45

Tom what we do next is go to question of the week Yep,

1:30:49

and our question of the week is brought to

1:30:51

you once again by the great shout out Loudcast

1:30:53

Hall of Famer Tony the tax

1:30:55

man Barone of ABC PA Inc.

1:30:57

com We know the

1:30:59

tax date has passed but that doesn't mean that

1:31:01

you didn't file an extension or maybe you need

1:31:03

some other Assistance with Tony because he could take

1:31:05

care of your personal and business needs

1:31:08

tax preparation Accounting anything like that go to

1:31:10

his website ABC PA Inc. com and click

1:31:13

on the links there for all the services

1:31:15

he provides and it doesn't matter where you

1:31:17

live This he's available to provide services in

1:31:19

all 50 states. There's

1:31:21

links to met send him a message phone

1:31:23

number Everything that you near Everything

1:31:26

you need is there and Zeus and

1:31:29

I can speak from personal experience We

1:31:31

have had him take care of our

1:31:33

taxes multiple times He's awesome communicative and

1:31:35

of course, he's a kiss fan in

1:31:37

a rush fan And that's a little bonus for

1:31:40

me Zeus tolerates him being a rush fan, but that's okay.

1:31:42

But anyways Tony the tax man ABC

1:31:46

PA Inc. com and a question

1:31:48

of the week comes from longtime listener

1:31:50

and supporter Keith Wetzel I

1:31:53

like this question Hey

1:31:55

guys a possible question of the week

1:31:57

for you. Well, yes, it's being read

1:32:00

right now. Hey, you got it. You got to do it the right

1:32:02

way. Say that first line in the beginning. Oh, hey,

1:32:05

guys. He's wet. So hey,

1:32:12

guys. Question of the week.

1:32:14

Wow. Favorite segment. Love

1:32:16

listening to it. Really insightful. With

1:32:20

pandemic Paul's new Renaissance

1:32:22

lifestyle, and with

1:32:24

him not wanting to recognize what he

1:32:26

has done in the past occasionally, do

1:32:29

you feel that he's taking the Howard

1:32:31

Stern route? If you

1:32:34

follow Howard, he is a shell

1:32:36

of his former self and rarely

1:32:38

discusses what he's done in the

1:32:41

past. Yeah,

1:32:43

because I think they're both

1:32:45

fucking reliant on therapy and

1:32:47

therapists, that they

1:32:49

almost hate their former

1:32:52

selves and hate certain aspects

1:32:54

of their life and have come to

1:32:56

the point where they've got the formulaic

1:33:00

expressions and sayings on how

1:33:03

to answer those things. And

1:33:05

it's nothing that's authentic. It's

1:33:07

just rehearsed bullshit that's been

1:33:09

put in their heads by their therapist. Nailed

1:33:12

it. Nailed it. I'll add a little bit

1:33:14

to this. I actually think what

1:33:16

Paul is doing is more egregious than

1:33:19

Howard. And the reason I say is,

1:33:22

I get it. I was a

1:33:24

diehard Stern fan in the hey days.

1:33:26

I don't listen to him really anymore.

1:33:28

He does still do

1:33:30

great interviews, but everybody does

1:33:33

great interviews these days. I think Howard, his

1:33:35

excuse is, okay, maybe he's mature. He's grown

1:33:37

up. He's an old mason. He's in his

1:33:39

70s or whatever. He's changed his tune. He's

1:33:41

become like a frigging interviewer guy who has

1:33:43

some fun. Paul, there's no excuse to behave

1:33:46

the way he does. Because he's Paul Stanley

1:33:48

from Kiss. He's the star child who's been

1:33:50

around for 50 years. There's no excuse for

1:33:52

him to behave the way he does. But

1:33:54

I do think Zeus, as you were talking,

1:33:56

I was kind of pointing on

1:34:00

the computer and I was, you're right, the

1:34:02

therapy thing, both of them have been in

1:34:05

long, long time intensive, intensive therapy, which

1:34:07

is fine. I'm a proponent and I'm

1:34:09

an advocate of mental health and therapy,

1:34:11

so I'm not saying that as a

1:34:13

criticism, but sometimes when you are deep

1:34:15

in it and you're going really,

1:34:17

really, it's going to affect everything that you do as you

1:34:19

continue to mature and as you grow. So I think

1:34:22

it's a really good comparison. I think it's

1:34:24

a great comparison, but I think what Paul's

1:34:27

doing is a little bit more egregious than

1:34:29

Howard in my opinion. So to each their

1:34:31

own, right? Yeah, agreed. But anyways, Keith, great question.

1:34:33

We appreciate it, buddy, and always appreciate your support

1:34:35

with the show. Thank you. Thanks, Keith.

1:34:38

Tom, where can people find us? The

1:34:40

website is always the place to go.

1:34:42

shoutoutloudcast.com. That's where you can find all

1:34:45

the episodes, the Shoutout Loudcast episodes, dorm

1:34:47

damage, album review crew, Zeppelin

1:34:49

1:34:51

links to our Amazon shopping page, links

1:34:53

1:34:55

everything is there. You can also click

1:34:58

on all the fun links there, especially

1:35:00

our guests and friends of the show

1:35:02

that we've had on. Zeus has been

1:35:04

working tirelessly to get that up to

1:35:06

date. You can see the pictures, some

1:35:08

really nice candid photos of us interacting

1:35:11

with these guests during the Zoom calls. You

1:35:13

click on those links, it'll take you directly

1:35:15

to their website or their social media links

1:35:17

or whatever they have. So that's a lot

1:35:20

of fun. And of course, our social media,

1:35:22

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and our email address.

1:35:24

If you want your question of the week,

1:35:27

please use our email address, [email protected]. And as

1:35:29

we always say, we read every email that

1:35:31

you send. So continue to please do that.

1:35:33

Even if we can't get to it on

1:35:36

the show, please do that. And

1:35:38

as always, we like to say that we are a

1:35:40

proud member of the Pantheon

1:35:42

Podcast Network of Shows. Yeah,

1:35:46

Tom, people can DM us on

1:35:48

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. We're on Threads,

1:35:51

TikTok. Find our

1:35:53

Spotify playlist, which correlate

1:35:56

with each episode per podcast.

1:35:59

So we have some for dorm damage,

1:36:01

ARC, Shout It Out Loudcast,

1:36:04

Zeppelin Chronicles, and you

1:36:06

find it by going to our profile

1:36:08

of Shout It Out Loudcast, not

1:36:10

the podcast section, okay? And

1:36:12

then please subscribe to our

1:36:14

YouTube channel, which is consistently

1:36:16

growing, and it's a lot

1:36:19

of fun. So thank you

1:36:21

so much for that. And

1:36:23

give us one of those

1:36:25

five-star child reviews on Apple

1:36:27

Podcasts, Spotify, Facebook, wherever you

1:36:29

can give us a five-star review, we

1:36:31

really appreciate it, and then we'll read

1:36:34

it on the episode and

1:36:36

give you a shout-out for doing so.

1:36:38

So if you do that, we really

1:36:41

appreciate it. And as Tom mentioned, the

1:36:43

website, shoutitoutloudcast.com, shoutitoutloudcast.com, where you can get

1:36:45

so much stuff. Our merch page is

1:36:47

there. You can see all the different

1:36:49

merch that we have, and shirts and

1:36:51

designs, they're putting up new ones all

1:36:54

the time. Our Amazon

1:36:56

store is there, too. You can click

1:36:58

on that and search through everything. And

1:37:00

in addition to that, we have tons

1:37:03

of different things, rankings. We just ranked

1:37:05

Carnival of Souls. We did a bunch of

1:37:07

other stuff recently. ARC stuff goes up. Check out

1:37:09

what we've done in the past and have some

1:37:11

fun with it and comment on it. Feel free

1:37:13

to leave your comments, and hopefully

1:37:16

we'll have some fun there.

1:37:18

And then finally, guys, we always

1:37:21

like to leave with famous last

1:37:23

words. Tom, you got any? Of

1:37:26

course. Get

1:37:28

up and get your grandma

1:37:30

out of here. Pick up.

1:37:33

Old Jim is working hard

1:37:36

this year, and baby,

1:37:39

do the things he says to do.

1:37:44

It's

1:37:46

been a month or two since I've been

1:37:49

sleeping with you. I'm

1:37:51

coming home again. I've

1:37:53

been to East and West, but baby, I

1:37:55

like best the road that leads to you.

1:37:57

I got to work on my Paul

1:38:00

Stanley. It's pretty good. It's pretty

1:38:02

good. Robert V Conti, Tom,

1:38:06

Loudcasters, KISSARMY, thank you.

1:38:10

Robert V Conti, thank you so much. Ton

1:38:12
