In this episode, Erin shares her journey to deciding that she wanted to have genetic testing for Huntington's Disease and navigating infertility and adoption while being gene-positive,

  1. Erin shares how she connected to Michael J Fox and his messaging and story before she knew that she was gene-positive but she connected to him and how he never let knowing what his future was going to look like stopping him from finding purpose, making a difference, and moving forward
  2. Erin shares how when she and her spouse begin the process of habiting children, her parents voiced concerns that HD may be in the family line. Erin moved forward and was tested with only a couple of friends and her spouse knowing. Erin shares that being gene-positive means that at some point within her lifetime she will develop the symptoms of HD. 
  3. Erin shares that shortly after learning that she was gene-positive she began having the process of IVF as they were unable to conceiver naturally. She shares her journey to adoption and how being gene-positive affected the process for her. 
  4. Erin shares how she works daily to maintain a positive outlook by focusing on things that allow her to live in the moment through sports both individually and in groups. 
  5. Writing has given Erin the tools to compartmentalize which allows her to focus on what is right in front of her and not focus on the what-ifs. 


Meet Erin:

Toronto author and public speaker, Erin Paterson, tested gene-positive for Huntington’s Disease (HD) in 2007. Shortly after she started suffering from depression, then received more crushing news, she was infertile. Despite those diagnoses, she was determined to have a family and live a joyful life. She is the author of, All Good Things: A Memoir About Genetic Testing, Infertility and One Woman’s Relentless Search for Happiness.
