Sharing its title with the current exhibition at Sid Motion Gallery, ‘Play on Repeat’ is a short series of podcasts that interview some of London’s most exciting emerging artists working today; Louis Caulfield, Morgan Wills and Alice Irwin.
The podcasts are led by Martin Mayorga and Vanessa Murrell, co-founders of dateagleart, an online platform giving visibility to emerging artists – who invite Gallery Director and curator Sid Motion to discuss with each of these artists the themes of their works in the exhibition.
This week’s episode speaks with Louis Caulfield. In the exhibition, Caulfield presents drawings, prints and paintings conceived around ideas of play and repetition. Caulfield introduces motifs and imagined characters, which can hold themselves in invented scenarios, or become abstract forms within the composition. Through the use of this character and narrative, the works to have a strong sense of humor but are never entirely light-hearted, delving into deeper emotional situations, and allowing a more macabre quality to reveal itself.
Having graduated from Wimbledon School of Art in 1994 Caulfield pursued a career in television and only rediscovered the joy of painting a few years ago. This conversation explores how that industry has affected his works and the characters that appear in them, but also explores the effects of showing these personal works in a public exhibition for the first time.
This conversation is the first of 3, which will be released weekly from Friday 26th January 2018.
The exhibition, ‘Play on Repeat’ is on view at Sid Motion Gallery until 17th February 2018.
