The Beatles were the first embodiment of a "Pop Band", but was that only because of culture standards? If the 60's culture were to allow more obscene artists to commercial radio, how would our definition of "Pop Music" change? would we be more accepting of artists who were more poetic or obscene? would there be more underground artists on the billboard charts? The Velvet Underground was the first alternative band to come out in the 60's and have songs and lyrics that were "Unacceptable" to cultural standards and commercial radio. In this podcast, I compare these two bands with their songwriting, instrumentation and production, and their impact and legacy.
