Scotty is “Chuffed” to welcome Robin Bates of Coaching for Geeks on Podcast Bay to discuss his experience, his luck, and his detrimental decisions so far within his podcasting journey. He went from #1 Hobbies and Games in the UK, #7 in the US to no longer charting because of a single choice he made.

He confesses that he's not the biggest geek in the world, but he taken in things like The History of Video Games and Mario. He's a Game Master for a variety of games, but ashamedly admits that he's not a Brony. He's got video consoles that most people have never even seen, including an ancient Virtual Boy. He explains that his show helps nerds and geeks tackle issues that appear in their lives: like dating and fitness, while using their language, metaphors and references.

-Trash-

He sums his top 3 pieces of trash up in People, Places and Things. He kicks off people by talking about demanding PR agents who try to book guests onto his show and then demand all of his credentials and his first born. His integrity, or his data are not for sale, and he stands by the fact that he should be getting media kits from the guests, not the other way around. If they truly loved the show, they would make an appearance regardless of those metrics.

He goes on to talk about places, and how scheduling becomes an issue. Scott calls him out on that and explains the cross-continental RP podcast he's involved with, and says if they can get over it, Robin has zero excuse. Robin quickly tells Scott to do himself, and then goes on to explain that he has a roommate as well as a noisy apartment. He also expresses his very real view on City Airport and describes his issue with their flight patch, and where his home sits within that flight path. He also shares that there's a park in front of his house and teenagers get high and get loud when he tries to record.

He calls himself trash as well. He talks about how much work making a podcast is, and that he's annoyed by his own podcast voice. Robin explains that he can tell a tut just by what the waveform looks like. He also goes on to share that he did amazingly on iTunes, and when he listened to his audience and submitted to Spotify, he divided his listeners and lost his chart rankings. He finishes off the Trash section by telling off iTunes about their discoverability and the fact that things haven gotten so much worse.

-Treasure-

He continues treasure with more People, Places and Things, and highlights the audience. He explains that we don't podcast for ourselves, and if the audience response dried up, he probably wouldn't continue doing it, but the engagement and the community surrounding his show is why he shows up as often as he does. He shares that the Coaching for Geeks community inspires the content within the show.

He literally sings praise for Descript, and explains what it is. He says it will take your audio, transcribe it within 5 minutes, and then you can edit it right there. It's taken him from spending hour to edit a podcast, to spending a few hours less.

He goes on tot tell people to use more than Apple Podcasts for discoverability, and find your own treasure. There's so much content out there and a lot of it is amazing, you just have to go looking for it and have an awesome podcast experience based on your interests.

-Tricks- Robin tells us that we should be drinking when we record. He says a Hot Toddy is perfect for the voice, and don't be ridiculous and overdo it, but a single drink can loosen the lips and allow you to let go of your inhibitions a bit. He also describes that he also abandons his “podcast voice” when he's been drinking.

He says that you need to push your old content out constantly, because new people are coming into your circle constantly, and they may not have heard the old stuff, which is still just as important and just as relevant as the new stuff.

Scotty and Robin also talk about pestering companies until they give you the features you want, and how it actually works effectively in order to implement solutions to podcasting problems. Robin shares his experience with Podbean and how they've added features that he's asked about and it's made all the difference.

He caps off the tricks section by talking about Twitter and how you shouldn't be ashamed about being a little heavier about promotion on Twitter. It's a very transient audience and if people like you, they're going to stick around and keep tuning in.
